Does OS X die of Loneliness?

Hey all!  I wonder if I am having the only issue with this.
I have a pimped-out Mac Pro (tower) with three 23" monitors. I have seen this behavior on my MacBook Pro 17, my MacBook Air as well so I don't think it's machine related.
I usually run full out during the day - all iWork Apps, multiple browsers, video and autio editing tools like Camtasia, iPhoto, Audacity, even MS Office Apps, and my machine runs like a champ running the digital version of JiuJitsu.
As long as I use it every day, I can sit down and return to it just fine. However, if I go away for a few days or more, like this last weekend I was away on a camping trip, when I return my WiFi connection may be down and I can't reconnect to the internet, I may have difficulty accessing or closing apps, and if I can even get all my apps to respond and close (usually a 5-10 minute process) I can't get it to shut down or restart - I'll select the options from the Apple menu and it'll just sit there and not restart. So, I'll have to do a hard reboot.
It's like my Mac dies of lonliness and I have to hard-reboot it to restore it from its form of catatonia.
Has anyone else seen this type of behavior? I like to keep my machine running on the off chance I have to access it remotely but when I don't do something to let it know I haven't abandoned it this will often happen.
Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Why does my iphone die fast?
I mean it wont even last a day?

Battery life is dependent on what you are using the phone for. First time users and users that have just gotten their phones tend to do a great deal with them. Extensive use of the Internet and other processor intensive tasks can drain the battery quickly. Also being located in a poor cellular coverage area can force the phone into constantly searching for a 3G signal and will drain battery as well. Check the Apple website for a link on battery suggestions or search here for other suggestions on how to minimize battery drainage.

  • Why does my phone die unexpectedly

Why does my phone die unexpectedly?
    Phone is 2 years old.
It stops working several times a day by just going black.
It does not cycle off like it does when the battery goes dead or when I turn it off.
Just goes black in the middle of what I'm doing.
When I try to charge it, nothing happens for 20 minutes, then the screen sorta backlights (light blue).
Then it will work again after 2 hours of charging.
Then after using it normally for an hour or so, it dies again.
Everything is updated and backed up.
    I have tried restarting it.
    Any thoughts?
    Gina

If I had to guess, it's either a heat related problem or the battery is failing completely.
I'd say it's time to consider an upgrade as it will probably be less expensive than a repair.

  • Why does my battery die so quickly with iOS 7?

Why does my battery die so quickly with iOS 7? Charged to 100%. Unplugged and opened up an hour later. Down to 88%. Why? No apps open.

I think it might also be a bug, my 4S went down to 1% I could actually see it go down from 18% just like a watch. The phone started at about 60% and went down to 1% in about an hour but the useage still stated I had over 6 hours of stand by time, when I plugged in the phone to charge it jumped from 1% to 27%.

  • How fast does your iPad die?

What's normal is what I'm trying to find out. Mine seems to have began to die extremely fast in the past week or so.

I restored my iPad to factory settings. Seems to be fine for now. 12:00 @ 87% now 12:25 @ 84%.....much much better!.

  • Why does my phone die at 62%?

    My phone dies at 62%.

Either your battery is failing or the battery gauge is way out of calibration. When it shuts off charge for 2-3 minutes, then reset the phone. Continue running the battery down until it shuts off near 1%. You may have to repeat the process a couple of times. When it finally shuts off and does not restart charge for 4 hours with the mains adapter.

  • Why does my battery die so quickly after updating to iOS 6.0.2 on the iPhone 5!?

Is there a fix to this or do we have to wait for the next update? My iPhone has become a useless 2-hour-running brick in my pocket...

Yes, my battery is draining quickly and recharging slowly.  Search is extremely slow, aol email won't work.  Kindle app all messed up, lost all on device but have it backed up on amazon.  I have slowly been discovering all that is wrong since Sunday's debacle of an update.  Apple deleted a post siting improper just because i told the truth.  They can delete all they want but this is one  screwed up mess and they are desperate.

  • Why does audio suddenly die when skimming clips?

Selecting a clip on a word or music beat is vital to getting the clip length right and in the right place in the project. Suddenly the audio is gone when you skim with the cursor and will only come on when you press play, making it impossible to accurately select the clip to be moved.
If you quit iMovie and then start again it comes back ... sometimes! I am using two firewire hard drives [500gig and 1000gig] for the events, leaving the mac drive [250gig] 140g to work with. Is there something I am missing?

You may have already done this, but to hear the audio while skimming clips you need to turn on Audio Skimming.
There are two ways to do this. In iMovie's menu go to View and select Audio Skimming (the second to last item in the View menu) - the shortcut is Command-K. Otherwise click on the Audio Skimming icon to turn it off and on. It's on the right-hand side in the strip of icons running through the centre of the iMovie window, directly to the left of the green audio bars. It's shaped like a waveform with a red vertical line through it.
You need to skim through clips reasonably slowly, otherwise the audio cannot be heard. It's also helpful when working with audio to turn on the waveforms beneath the video thumbnails. The icon for this is at the bottom right of the Project window, and also at the bottom right of the Events window (to the left of the thumbnail sliders).

  • Why does my iPhone die at 40%?

My iPhone dies at about 44%, and I don't know why. What do I do?

Your battery meter might be wrong.  To recalibrate it, try fully discharging (until it shuts off) and then fully recharging (don't unplug until 100%).  You may need to do this a few times.

  • Why does my iPhone5 die when the battery is around 40-46%?

The phone was bought a year ago November.  Over the last while my phone has been shutting down well before the battery life has run out. Why is this?

Could be a battery problem. If you go to getsupport.apple.com and they can run a battery diagnostic on your iPhone. Or take it to an apple store and they can run a free diagnostic on your device to see if your iPhone battery is failing and get it replaces either for free or at a paid cost.

  • Why does the battery die before the power monitor puts the computer to sleep?

Used to be that the power monitor would sleep the computer safely, but lately that doesn't work. I imagine this is something to do with ageing of the battery - is there a way I can recalibrate this?

  • Do Nike+ iPod sensor have a battery and can i die?

I was just wondering if the Nike+iPod sensors have a battery and if it does, can it die? Why I ask is because I was trying to turn on the sensor and link it to my iPod touch and my iPod nano. But it just says searching for sensor. and i put the sensor in my shoe and walk around but it still can not link? and i also did this:
    1. Hold down center button and menu button on iPod until the Apple Logo appears and then let go
    2. Hold down the sensor's button for 5 seconds then press it twice one after another quickly, so hold for 5 then click click
    3. Put the sensor in your shoe
    4. Put the receiver into iPod and go to Nike+ iPod > Settings > Link then click center button to link to new sensor
    5. Walk around and the receiver should pick up on the sensor
But it still won't work.. so i was wondering if my sensor died... So can the Nike+ iPod sensor die? Please help, because i really don't want to buy another one.

  • Thread safe RMI

    Thread safe RMI.
My RMI server provides clients with the ability to CRUD data but in order to manage concurrency I did the following.
1stly I would like to understand correctly the issues of RMI server objects....
It is my understanding that RMI server can cater for eg 100 clients by spawning 100 threads at random for each client. This process is not managed (thread wise) and the result is that 20 clients wishing to update record A can do so at will? Various steps can be taken from what I gather...
    a) Synchronise (expensive)
    b) implement a lock manager.
The step I have taken is include a lock manager and I have ensured that all locking an unlocking occur in a singleton server object that manages all sensitive data CRUD operations. Now I use a lock manager but I would like to know what happens if for eg the 1st RMI client dies and has its thread blocking
all other threads from locking the same record? Does the thread die with the client or is there a counter measure for this? The obvious answer that comes to mind is Object.wait() inside the lock manager?
The reason I ask was that because all of the locking occurs in a single method call in the Network
Server's JVM, so is there a need to worry about the RMI connection dying during the middle the locking operation.

It is my understanding that RMI server can cater for eg 100 clients by spawning 100 threads at random for each client.No. It spawns a new thread for every new connection. At the client end, RMI makes a new connection for every call unless it can find an idle connection to the same host that is less than 15 seconds old. So if the client is doing concurrent calls there will be concurrent threads at the server for that client.
This process is not managed (thread wise)'Managed' meaning what?
the result is that 20 clients wishing to update record A can do so at will? The result is that an RMI server is not thread safe unless you make it so.
    a) Synchronise (expensive)Compared to a database update the cost of synchronization is trivial.
    b) implement a lock manager. The database should already have one of those, and so does java.util.concurrent. Don't write your own. Personally I would just syncrhonize around the database calls.
what happens if for eg the 1st RMI client dies and has its thread(a) the client doesn't have a thread, see above. The call has a thread.
    (b) at the server, the call will execute, regardless of the state of the client, until it is time to write the result back to the client, at which point the write will encounter an IOException of some description and the thread will exit.
blocking all other threads from locking the same record? That can't happen unless you foul up your concurrency management.
Does the thread die with the clientIt dies with the call.
is there a need to worry about the RMI connection dying during the middle the locking operation. The server JVM won't notice until it is time to write the call result back, see above.
