Does OS X prefer 5Ghz channel 36 than others?

AirPort Time Capsule latest version.
Wireless AC.
Those 5Ghz channels, which one usually gives highest speed? I have tested few, I felt channel 36 seemed to have highest speed than channel 52 or 100 or 149, but channel 36 looks very crowded, many neighbour 5Ghz are around this channel while channel 100 / 149 are not used by any neighbours.
Is that true that OS X prefers channel 36 than others?

Every time the computer goes to sleep the actual settings will change..
When it wakes up the wireless is likely to be different..
Please do give me the link speeds.. Not the actual throughput.
I have to say everyone here probably thought you were talking about link speed.. but I see you are talking about actual throughput.
I refuse to update to Yosemite.. but the command should still be to hold down option key whilst you click on the wifi symbol.
This gives a bunch of useful info.
Give me this screenshot using 36 and using 149.. give it to me if it changes like on waking the computer.. or when you have started transferring files.
The other place to get the info is wireless diagnostics.. which is listed at the bottom..
You can get a lot of info out of the utility.. it however is different on yosemite.
The major spike on the curve of signal and SNR is when I changed over channels.. do this and mark what the changes are.. or do a separate graph for each one.
As a final note..
538 on 36 vs 500 on 149 I would count as error margins of any test... that is less than 10% difference.. And these tests are not proof one way or the other of wireless .. it can be internet or router or congestion..
If you want accurate indications you must use iperf in your own network.. not to the internet.

    Very good news. Check again later in the evening as there may be some other networks busy at that time. If you don't see any other networks, you are most fortunate.
    Could you explain further what you mean by "The best channel is the one that is the most distance from other channels."
    I know this is a bit difficult to understand because the channels interact and overlap with one another. There are really only 3 channels that do not overlap with each other... 1, 6 and 11. If you have no other channels in range and set the Airport Extreme to Automatic, it will likely choose one of these 3 channels. Give it a try.
    Now if there were more channels in use around you and for example, you find that someone is using channel 6. Then your best channel choice is either 1 or 11 because they are the most distant from 6. Or, if someone is on 8, then choose 1. The real challenges start when you find out channels 2,5,7 and 10 are all in use. Then you can't choose a channel that does not overlap with one of the others.

    That is the info I have at this point in time. I have totally avoided AC models.. I think they are poor cf the same chipset models available from Asus or Netgear that have real GUI setups with real functionality.
    Is there functionality that is available in the Mac version but not in the Windows version?
    The v5 utility in Mac and PC was the same functionality..
    The v6 utility in Mac and never released for PC has far less functionality. Which is designed I guess to correspond to the new model Apple routers which also have less functionality. For instance there is no longer a log function you can use. Apple do not believe in functionality.. it is supposed to be as near to self setting as possible.. the ideal would be purely automatic and no airport utility. Apple are slowly working towards their nirvana.
    Why has Apple neglected to update the Windows version? Looks like the Windows version 5.6.1 (Post Date: Jun 11, 2012) is a year older than the Mac version (Post Date: Jul 11, 2013).
    Apple do not reveal info like this.. but my guess is they produced an iOS version so they figured if you don't have a Mac then surely you own an iphone or ipad.. if not you should buy one.

  • WRT600N Network Dropouts on 5Ghz Channel with WPA-2

    I've got a WRT600N using WPA-2 Personal on the 5Ghz channel. Whenever I try to upload something from my machine to a NAS attached by ethernet to the device I lose the wireless connection. This doesn't happen if I turn encryption off, or if I'm uploading to something on the Net, only a device connected to the ethernet port. It doesn't matter whether I use zero config or Intel Proset. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's the NAS or any other device connected to ethernet port. The same problem happens with every variation of WPA. It's fine if I connect to the 2.4Ghz channel.
    I've upgraded to the lastest firmware for the router (1.01.35 build 5) and NAS as well as the latest driver for the intel wireless card. I'm using all the default settings on all the devices.
    Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening with WPA, other settings I could try, anything that might help.

    It's been running fine for the past few months although the router sometimes loses the 5GHz network and I have to restart it. We were away until yesterday and the WUSB600 has been dropping the wireless connection a few times.

  • Airport Extreme 5GHz Channel not available

    Hi All
    My Airport Extreme 5th Gen is now up and running.
    The issue I have is that unless I give the 5GHz channel it's own name, my MacBook Pro will not pick it up - instead opting for the 2.4GHz channel. I know that distance and obstacles are a factor but in a test situation the MacBook is only a metre away from the Airport. If I give the 5GHz channel it's own name then I can select the 5GHz network and confirm the connection rate - this also works with Windows 7 machine in the same position with the signal strength being 'excellent'. So why when I have the same name for both channels will my machines only pick up the 2.4GHz signal?
    Using two names would be okay exept that when I do this the 2.4GHz network slows completely and is unusable.
    Last week I had a pretty good setup with an old Airport Extreme and now with the new 5th Gen unit I can either connect two machines at 5GHz or four machines at 2.4GHz - not a mixture of both. So basically I'm no better off than with my eight year old Airport Extreme.
    I'm beginning to think that there is a defect with the new Airport Extreme unit - is there any simple checks I can do on the unit to confirm that it is operating correctly?
    I'd really appreciate any help with this.

    Update: Solved. I reset the Airport Extreme a number of times in succession and finally it just worked - not sure what the problem was.

    I've recently purchased the E2500, done the setup but am facing some issues.
    I'm unable to see the 5GHz channel SSID, I can only see the 2.4GHz channel SSID.
    Have tested all the laptops and devices at home and all can't see the 5GHz channel.
    The list of devices are:
    a) iPhone 3GS
    b) iPhone 4G
    c) iPhone 4GS (some sites says it doesn't support, some says it does, I'm confused as a result)
    d) Samsung laptop
    e) Dell laptop
    f) Momo11 Little Bird Edition tablet (Made in China [MIC])
    g) No name MIC tablet
    Secondly, is there any tips / tricks to tweak the modem to increase the internet speed?

    First, with the above devices you must have a 5Ghz capable wireless adapter in order to see a 5Ghz signal.  Verify which devices above have a 5Ghz adapter installed.  This means it must be 802.11 a/b/g/n cabable, not just b/g/n.

  • Does Verizon issue any 5Ghz routers?

    From my apartment in NYC, there are a lot of WiFi access points.  Vistumbler shows at least 25 networks, all except 1 are using 2.4Ghz spectrum.  Some people were using channels  besides 1,6,11, (causing extra interference) although now there is only 1 after an appeal to our building listserv.
      I had a Actiontec MI424WR (single antenna, grey front panel, I forget the revision letter, but it was "early") and my speeds were quite slow.  Via their real-time chat, I asked about a router upgrade, and they offered me a better router.  I really wanted a 5Ghz router since my range is not an issue (not a huge apt) but interference in 2.4Ghz is.  In the chat (which I have a transcript of, I asked explicitly if it would be 5Ghz  capable, and was told it was.  But I received the same model number router, except revision "I" now, with 2 antennae and a red front panel.  As far as I can tell it is 2.4Ghz only.  Fortunately, they did not charge me for this upgrade, or I would be really steamed.  
    But still I wonder - Does Verizon supply any 5Ghz capable routers?

    Yes they offer one for about a 139.99 or you might be able to ask them if they will rent it, I think it's about 5 or 6 dollars to rent.  I think you have to call in for this one, it's new.
    It's a greenwave g1101 Wireless AC router.
     OR a nice option is their 5 GHZ wireless extender,  about 75 bux     you can buy this one online, and we haven't heard a single complaint about them yet on the forums, if that's helpful.  nothing but glowing remarks.

  • Turn off 5Ghz channel?

    Have the latest TC but downloading files and viewing videos much slower on 5Ghz than 2.4.  Is there a way to turn off the 5Ghz channel?  if not, my MBP automatically connects to the 5Ghz channel. Is there a way to make the 2.4Ghz the default channel the laptop connects to?.

    Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility 6.0
    Click Edit
    Click on the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
    Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name and this will automatically add "5 GHz" to the current wireless network name that you use.
    Click Save and the Airport will restart with the new settings in place
    Your devices will now connect to the 2.4 GHz band
    If you want to connect to the 5 GHz band in the future, you will need to "point" your computer at that network

    I'm currently using Late-2009 iMac and for some reason after upgrade to 10.7.3 I couldn't connect to any 5GHz network at all. In the System Profiles, Wi-Fi menu now says:

    Interesting. If you can still connect via wired (or 2.4GHz wireless), I would download the 10.7.3 combo update from apple support and reapply it. It appears the driver and family did not fully install with the update.

    My problem is relatively simple, though, I had some trouble finding a solution to it:
    When I play my exported animation using flash player in Google Chrome, if the window is bigger than the resolution flash document/frame, it shows content not meant to show up on the frame -- like parts of a huge background that aren't supposed to show up yet.
    In other words, how do I constraint the .swf to the white background/document resolution?

    Anyone? I'd appreciate it if someone replied soon -- I am done with my project once this issue is resolved, and I am excited to publish it.

    I have the same problem, they never told me that, just that the newest version of Java "locks" up streaming quotes.

    Yes it does support both 2.4 and 5 GHz. The specs N and to meet N you have to have both. If you look at the specs for the fourth generation (the latest one) iPod Touch it says "802.11n 2.4GHz only".
