Does OS X Yosemite really improve the security of your Mac?

Does OS X Yosemite really improve the security of your Mac? OS X Mavericks seems pretty secure. Is it worth upgrading to ugly Yosemite?

As long as Mavericks continues to get security updates, and you hate so many things about Yosemite, there isn't any reason to upgrade, although disabling the recommended Spotlight options takes care of most of the "snooping":
http://www.wired.com/2014/10/how-to-fix-os-x-yosemite-search/
You can also install Little Snitch to keep track of attempts to make outgoing connections and deny any that make you uncomfortable.
Given your concerns about snooping, you probably shouldn't use anything from Google.

  • Alias tabls does really improves the performence

    hi all gurus
since long time i have one question in my mind about alias table
if we use alias table in physical layer, does it really improves the performance ??
so for i have used it for to avoid self joins,
can u give me at least one scenario regarding alias table?
Apart form that all are telling that one table is use full for more than one time that time we have to go for alias table
    is it true?
let us take small example as sh schema ,in that we have two facts, cost and sales and dimension like product, countries, time
here my question is to maintain start schema in physical layer we have to go for alias concept.
if we give direct joins to the fact with dimensions, will it decrease the performance ?
i don't under stand ,can any one clear about it?
    Thanks a lot in advance

The Answers is No for the example you described about SH Schema.
Aliasing tables, IMHO, doesn't contribute to performance gain/lag.
Aliasing concept is used to implement some complicated scenarios, like the one you described i.e. self joins.
Other examples would be a 1. circular join, 2. prevent clutter in physical layer, 3. set specific cache properties etc....are few i remember on top of my head.
In a nutshell, think of it as a modelling technique to implement complexities.
    mark answers promptly.

  • On my iphone 4 it still wants me to answer the security question to improve the security

on my iphone 4 it still wants me to answer the security question to improve the security How do I fix this I have been doing this for the past 5 days or so and it's bugging me!

It will be 3 questions no matter where you do it.  It's been quite a while since I did this myself, but as I recall this is what I did:
    Open iTuens on your computer
    Click Store>View My Account
In the pop-up window, verify that the correct Apple ID is shown, then enter your password and click View Account
At that point, I believe I was prompted to choose my security questions and provide answers.  Or perhaps I had to click Done on the bottom right first...can't remember.
If that doesn't work, try choosing Store>Sign Out and then Store>Sign In, provide your password and perhaps you will get the prompt then.

  • How to use your Treo 750 to browse the internet on your mac

    Hi There,
I am by no means an expert on this, but this is what has worked for me. I'm on Vodafone in New Zealand but I think this setup (or very similar) should work with Cingular in the states or other Windows Mobile v5 devices.
    1. Install The Windows Mobile Modem Scripts Onto Your Mac
Download the Generic Windows Mobile Modem Scripts (3 of them) from: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/
The scripts are under "Windows Smartphones & BlackBerrys" called "Scripts for Windows Mobile phones" (half way down the page)
Once downloaded, put the scripts into >Library >Modem Scripts
    2. Start Bluetooth on the Treo
    Go >Start Menu >Settings >Connections (from the bottom) >Bluetooth
    Tick "Turn on Bluetooth"
Tick "Make this device discoverable to other devices"
    Click OK
    3. Pair The Treo with your Mac (done on the Mac)
If the Bluetooth menu is not already on your mac (near the date and time, top right) go to >System Preferences >Bluetooth
Under the "settings" tab tick "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" and the menu will appear
Once the menu is there, choose "Set up Bluetooth Device..."
Click "Continue" and on the next screen choose "Mobile Phone". Click "Continue"
Make sure the screen on the Treo is on (I've found the mac has trouble discovering the device otherwise)
Choose your phone and click "Continue"
Click continue and enter the pass code on the Treo and click "Next"
Once pared, on the phone click "Finish"
On the mac, make sure "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection" is ticked and click "Continue"
Enter your Vodafone (or Cingular) account username and password (see notes below)
Under phone number enter: *99# (this invokes GPRS or the 3G data connection)
Choose "Windows Mobile GSM 460k" from the "Modem Script" pop up menu
    Click "Continue"
    Click "Quit"
Select the new phone from the Bluetooth Devices list and press the "Edit Serial Ports" button from the left
Click the plus sign under the main window
Name it "Treo750" (or Cingular or Vodafone or whatever you want)
Choose "Modem" from the "Port type" pop up menu
Tick "Require pairing for security" and "Show in Network Preferences"
    Click "Apply"
    4. Configure The Bluetooth Port
    Go >System Preferences >Network
    Choose "Network"
A "New Port Detected" window should pop up, click "OK" (if it doesn't and you have a new "Bluetooth" port, don't worry)
Select the "Bluetooth" port from the list and click "Configure"
Under the PPP tab, click the "PPP Options" button from the bottom
Untick "Send PPP echo packets" and "Use TCP header compression" under "Advanced Options"
    Click "OK"
Click the "Apply Now" button from the bottom right
    Close System Preferences
    5. Connecting to browse the internet from the mac
    Go >Applications >Internet Connect
    Click "Bluetooth" from the top
Tick "Show modem status in menu bar"
    Quit internet connect
Make sure the Treo is on and bluetooth is on (and your data connection is on, see notes below)
Go up to the internet connect menu (the little phone icon) and select "Connect"
    Notes
For the carrier account name and password, I just used the same account info that was on my phone under >Start >Settings >Connections >Connections Icon >Manage existing connections >Edit "VFNZ Internet" (or your carrier name) >Next Screen >Next Screen >Next Screen. On this third screen, I found my account details.
If for you there is nothing, then more than likely your carrier doesn't require a name and password - so on your Mac, leave these fields blank and just enter *99# for the phone number. Although, I think you may have to use something (for Mac & Windows Mobile compatibility) so just try entering username: guest and password: guest. There is much more info regarding this in the readme file that comes with the Windows Mobile modem scripts. Or contact your carrier for your specific details (probably the best thing to do!).
I have found the connection to be a little bit unreliable when the Treo's screen goes to sleep - so I tend to hit a button on the treo every 30 seconds to keep it on - But Vodafone here in NZ has flashed the ROM to make it HSDPA compatible so others may not have this problem.
I had trouble the first time I tried to connect through internet connect. But after I connected through >System Preferences >Network >Bluetooth >Connect button next to the configure button at the bottom, it worked every time from the Internet Connect menu.
Also, you may want to check your email or browse a page on the Treo first, just before connecting from your mac to make sure the data connection is on - I haven't worked this out fully but I'm not sure the Mac can open the data connection itself. Again, this may be a region/carrier specific issue.
    Cheers
    Ben

  • Does Apple ask for "help improve Apple Security" when new app is trying to be downloaded?

I was selecting an app on vh1 called the co-star app. I click it it then prompts for apple I'd password to allow the download. I put password in. The app pops up on my iPad screen. Then it starts to download. Then this window pops up n halts the downloading of that app. This window says " help improve apples security by completing this 3 question security thing. So I clicked cancel because I wasn't sure if apple does that or if it is a hacker looking for me to give 3 answers to these security questions. Can someone help me? I am a new IPad owner n I'm learning here. This is my first Apple device. So I appreciate any responses from you. Thank you for your time.
I don't know what this iPad is or it's operating system, all I know is it was brand new n very very expensive!

What you are seeing is part of Apple's fairly new security system that was implemented a few months ago. It is perfectly legitimate. The first time that you download something for iTunes or the App Store on a new device, you will be prompted to set up three security questions and an optional rescue email address.
Go ahead and comply with the request from Apple. It is for your own security. Just remember the answers to the questions. You can make up answers if you want to do so, you just have to provide answers that you will remember. I wrote my answers down and stored them away for safe keeping.
You can read this cnet article from a few months ago about Apple's new system.

  • Does port mapping (for minecraft) compromise the security

    Hi,
My son wants to install the minecraft server on his laptop, so he and his brothers can play in one world.
I did find the information how to forward ports, but I am a little reluctant to do so, because I don't know how save it is. Does port mapping compromise the security of my network? Would this open a backdoor for hackers to invade all computers conneted to the network?
    I would apreciate any advice.

    No, not if done properly.
Generally, port mapping is designed to allow a direct connection from the Internet to a specific computer running a specific service on the local network. In this case the specific computer is your son's laptop and the specific service is the Minecraft server. Any other computers and services on that local network, other than your son's laptop will remain off limits to the Internet.
The key to making sure that this stays secure is that you assign the laptop a static IP address, so it is the only one that is directly addressable from the Internet, and only the ports required for the Minecraft server are mapped to that static IP address belonging to the laptop.

  • Does OS X 10.2 has the secure delete option & erase free space

Hi All, I have an old iBook G4 1.42ghz with 1GB ram and I am thinking of putting an old disk of 10.2 onto it as I always liked OS X 10.2.
I just can't remember of this verion of OS X has the secure delete option in finder when emptying trash and also does it have the abilty to erase free space with zeros etc..

What OS 10.2 disc are you planning to use to install 10.2. If it's from another model Mac, it won't work.

  • How can i improve the speed of my mac?

my mac has 667 MHz, how can i improve the speed?

Sorry if that sounded not very helpful, but basically it comes down to that. Not much can improve the performance of machine of that vintage, to stand up to a current model, unless you spend almost as much on upgrades (some of which to consider are listed below).
Some thought should be given to the budget (money and time and effort) one is willing to spend. The G4 Digital Audio is possibly a good candidate for upgrading for someone who is interested in do-it-yourself computer stuff and bargain hunting for parts. It can even be a fun hobby. But even max-ing out all possible upgrades will still be lacking in performance compared to the current Mac models, I don't actually have any specific benchmarks, just my gut feel. And you may spend a good portion of the cost of a new machine on all those parts for the old machine.
Is this the 667MHz machine (G4 Digital Audio) in question?
    http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/digital-audio-power-mac-g4.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/Framework.cfm?page=g4da.html&title= Power%20Macintosh%20G4%20Digital%20Audio
or is it some other model?
Here are some CPU upgrades, for example:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=162&type=Processor&T I=2420&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades
you can even get a small rebate for your original CPU
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Service/rebate-program/
Any of those CPUs should double your processing speed, but you may also need more RAM...or the CPU will just be waiting for data to be read from the virtual memory on the hard drive.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/133SD512328/
you could max it out with a whopping 1.5 GB, with 3 of these.
and you may need a better video card...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=162&type=Video&TI=29 34&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades
To add larger and faster hard drives than the original Ultra ATA/66 can handle you would need a PCI ATA133 or PCI SATA card...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ACARD/AEC6280MOB/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/TSATA/
And if you need to install OS X from a DVD, and want to burn your own DVD, you may need a new optical drive, if one hasn't been installed already, to replace the CD-RW:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?Model=162&Type=InternalOpticalDrives&sort=pop
Also, check out the Power Macintosh G4 forums if you have any questions about that particular model, (if I guessed correctly)
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=113
Even while I am trying to build a case to convince someone not to waste their money on this project, I am thinking to myself, where can I pick up one of these G4 towers to take on this project myself. Maybe a Quicksilver, no a FW400 MDD dual-boot for sure, I still have some OS 9 software. I did about all I can with my G3 Desktop, and spent more than my MacBook cost.

  • How do i improve the Audio on my Mac Mini

c to go Headphone Jack-->Soundblaster--> Tv-->5.1 reciever OR is it better to go USB Jack-->Soundblaster-->TV-->5.1 reciever
    thanks in advance

mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   first mac ever

    you replied:
Just to be clear, you have a new Intel-based Mac mini, correct?
Yes,i got it in early July this year
(The speaker outputs on the G4 Mac minis are different from the Intel ones.) The "headphone" port on the Intel-based Mac mini is both an analog as well as a digital optical port.
    Didnt know that,thanks
There's no reason you couldn't go from your Mac directly to the 5.1 receiver.
The reason I go Mac-->Tv--> reciever is because sometimes i may be doing a file late at night when others are sleeping and i can leave the reciever off and listen through the tv speakers
What kinds of inputs does it have?
I assume you mean the reciever One Optical for a dvd and a whole mess of RCA type line level,TV has R-L Audio and Video in and R-L Audio out
Does it have a digital optical audio input? If so, you could leave the TV plugged in to the receiver with RCA cables and plug the Mac mini into the system with a digital optical audio cable.
do you mean headphones out on Mini to optical in on reciever?
ALSO............what i am driving at here is it almost sounds like the signal coming from the mini needs to be amplified a bit so sound adequate,I know in certain circumstances signals need to be antenuated or amplified
My curiosity was whether or not the Mini had an output other than the headphone jack
It's not clear to my why you have the "Soundblaster" device at all, what are you using it for? Does it have Mac drivers?
Bought it for a windows PC about 6 years ago,now i have SIX computers
    One Mac Mini
    one Windows ME
    One Mandriva 2006 Linux
    One Mepis Linux Desktop
    One Mepis Linux Laptop
    One Palm Pilot

I didnt spend a whole lot, only bought 2 of them new The Mini and the Palm Pilot

  • "The age of your mac" ?

I have been using my Macbook for a week now but how come the coconutbattery application shows that "the age of my mac"is 6 weeks?! Does it mean that mine is an old machine ?
I bought it from amazon.com and can i get a replacement/refund due to this reason?
    Thanks for helping

Your machine was built a little while before you ordered/bought it. It's no reason to return it as the next one you get will be the same - (built before you order/buy).
The only way to get one built when you order/buy is to customize it.
I realize that the tech industry is moving at a blazingly fast pace and machines are being improved upon year after year but 6 weeks is really no big deal.
