Does PDFMaker damage a template Normal.dot?

I have installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard and noticed that editor MS office Word has a strange exit.
It will now always asks and offers to save Normal.dot with next message.
===========================================
"The general template "Normal.dot" has changed. Save it?"
===========================================
Although I have not changed any settings, the MS Word and did not write any macros.

Before PDFMaker can process the open Word file the Word file must be saved.
This assures that the output PDF reflects the open Word file's content.
As it is Word, not Acrobat, that controls the Word file it is Word asking, through the interface with Acrobat, about saving any potential changes to the normal.dot.
fwiw - to keep the installed normal.dot "pure" consider:
(1) have the file backed up somewhere
(2) if mastering content that needs layout/format different than what normal.dot provides
--| create and save new templates to use
--| go into Word's templates to use what is there. Or download desired templates. Customize and save these for use.

  • PDFMaker Normal.dot

I am continually asked if I want to save changes to my Normal.dot when
    closing out of Word.
This started happening right after Acrobat 9 was installed.
I also just started having problems with the Arial font since Acrobat 9.0 was installed?
Does anyone know what Acrobat did to word PDFMaker with this upgrade?
I am still Running Word 2003 SP-3 on Windows XP.
Any suggestions?  Can I safely remove that PDFMaker plug-in and eliminate all these problems?

  • Normal.dot ya existe

Tengo Office97, Windows 2000 pro, y adobe 5.0.5 y cuando abro word dos veces, en el documento 2 me aparece el siguiente mensaje:
Word no pudo abrir esta plantilla de documento
    (C:\ARCHIVOS DE PROGRAMA\...\PDFMAKER.DOT) (Aceptar)
    A continuación:
Word no pudo abrir "(símbolo de un pequeño cuadrado) (Aceptar)
Cuando cierro el documento 2 me dice:
    Normal.dot ya existe. ¿Desea reemplazarlo? (Si/No/Cancear)
A pesar de decir no me sale el cuadro de dialogo para guardar el documento, doy a cancelar y entonces sí, por fin, cierra el documento 2.
¿Alguien tiene alguna solución a mi problema? Se lo agradecería muchísimo.

    Hello Peter,
You can try to locate and delete the normal.dot file. The file is re-created each time Word is started (if any doesn't exist). Note, all custom toolbar modifications will be erased too. So, you may try to backup the file before.

  • Word 2003 always asks to save the normal.dot since Acrobat 9 was installed

    Hello,
Until Acrobat 9 Standard was installed on the 5000 PCs of our company, the following issue never occured.
As soon as Acrobat 9 Standard was installed, our users started to complain of messages asking them to save the normal.dot every time Word 2003 or Outlook 2003 if Word is used as editor, is closed. And even if they save the normal.dot, of course, next time they are requested to save again.
And if we uninstall Acrobat 9 Standard on the PCs concerned, the issue dissapear... and reappear if we re-install it.
So, the issue is clearly linked to Acrobat 9 Standard.
Of course, the Word 2003 option "Confirm to save the normal.dot" is NOT checked.
It doesn't seems to happens on all the PCs but we can't isolate the commun point between those which have the issue.
All our PCs are made by ghosting so are pretty similar, with Windows XP SP3 avec Office 2003 SP3... and now Acrobat 9.1.3 Standard.
In case that would help the diagnostic, on the PCs without the issue, the message doesn't appear, but, still, the behavior of the normal.dot changes : the time stamp changes every time Word or Outlook is closed. Before the install of Acrobat 9, the timestamp was not changing everything, but only of changes were made.
So, I guess Acrobat 9 Standard (probably the add-in for pdfmaker) forces the saving of all the .dot everytime Word or Outlook is closed.
    Can you help us ?
    Thanks

Thanks for your reply, but the issue is the same even when Word is not the default editor in Outlook.
Regarding the Office 2003 and Acrobat 9 updates, we are already up-to-date for Acrobat 9, but it's true that all our PCs have not yet received the SP3 for Office 2003, so it may be a trail to follow.
But I think the issue also happens even on some PCs with most up-to-date Office 2003, so I'd say it's probably not the solution.
But it doesn't seems that this kind of issue is widly encountered (I mean elsewhere than in our company).
So there is probably something specific to our environnement. And since we pretty much "lock-down" the PCs (to avoid users to mess with it), it's not impossible that some restrictions somewhere on the PC causes the issue... at least to some categories of users who are missing some authorisations.
But I'm sure that when we uninstall the "Adobe PDFMaker" component (in add/remove programs), the problem dissappear. So we are probably going to adopt this "solution" to make the steam goes down among our annoyed employees... until we'll find a better one.

  • Saving to normal.dot in Word for Mac

    Hi!
I don't know if this question belongs here but I couldn't seem to find any other forum for it.
So... how do I save to normal.dot in Word for Mac? I can't find the normal.dot template.
Hope someone can hekp - thanks

The only difference is that changing Normal.dot applies it to newly created documents. Come to think of it, I bet Word saves a 'snapshot' of the Normal template at the time the document is first saved, so when you're applying the Normal style, you're just reapplying the original normal associated with that document, not the modified Normal template.
Instead of saving a new Normal template, did you try modifying the Normal style using Format > Style, selecting Normal, clicking Modify and making the changes you want with the Add to Template and Automatically Update boxes checked? I suspect you would still need to reapply the Normal style to previously saved documents.
Also, under Tools Menu > Templates and Add-Ins there is an Automatically Update Document Styles checkbox under the Normal template. Checking this may cause Word to reapply the Normal style to old documents, but then again, maybe not...

  • Word default font without normal.dot

    Hey,
I try to set Microsoft Office Word 2010 X86 default font via group policy.
(So when I open word the new document opens with default font e.g. Arial and font size 11)
Currently we are doing this through 'normal.dot' file, which is copied at every logon to the path %AppData%\Microsoft\Normal.dot .
Unfortunately Normal.dot changes more than just these two settings and some users need to be able to customize some other things stored in normal.dot through their logoff/logons.
How can the default font and font size be set via group policy without using the 'normal.dot'?
I already had a look at the Microsoft Office 2010 adm/admx files but I was not able to find any setting like these.
    Thank you for support.

    Hi,
As far as I know, we can’t set the default font and font size for Word without using the normal.dotm.

  • Normal.dot overwrite error

I've been using RoboHelp for years, but with RoboHelp X5 and
Microsoft Word 2003, every time I've attempted to create a printed
document from a RoboHelp HTML project, I get prompted by Microsoft
Word to overwrite my existing Normal.dot stylesheet. Depending on
how fast I either save as a different filename or cancel the
overwrite, RoboHelp spawns additional attempts to create the
document, and I can end up with a number of Microsoft Word
sessions, and dialog prompts to overwrite the Normal.dot stylesheet
from each instance of Microsoft Word. This happens both when I
choose the option to use the project's styles to generate the Word
document, or if I use the built-in RoboHelp stylesheet to do the
conversion, and even when I have selected the pdf option on the
    first page of the wizard.
This is affecting a number of technical writers at my
company, each with the same workaround, just click as many Cancel
or No buttons as necessary to close all the Microsoft Word
instances, and complete the process. The process seems to actually
generate the Word file, and the pdf, but it's a hassle to have to
hand-hold the application so it doesn't just keep spawning
    additional Word instances.
Has anybody else experienced this oddity? Is there a solution
which prevents this from occuring, or do you have additional
workarounds you've used to address the issue?
Many thanks for any suggestions you may have.
    Keith Lenehan

Not something I have seen people having a problem with and
    not something I have encountered.
In Word | Tools | Options | Save tab, there is a check box to
prompt to save changes to the normal template. In the default
installation of Word that is cleared. I wonder if you have it set?
Other than that, I don't have any suggestions but if that is it,
please post back to confirm the solution.
I have the check box cleared and am not aware of any adverse
    consequences.
Any PDF writer requires a file to create the PDF file from so
what is happening is that a temporary Word document is created and
then trashed after the PDF is generated. The fact that Word is
being used thus prompts the save request.

  • Acro v8.1.2 &  Word 2002 with DM normal.dot grows each time I close Word

Using Acro v8.1.2 and opening/exiting a Word 2002 document stored in DM (v5.1.0.56181) the normal.dot grows after (almost) every exit of Word. It doesn't grow if remove the PDFMaker for MS Office or if I open/exit a Word 2002 doc outside of DM.
Is there a way to keep all integrations and stop the normal.dot from growing?

    A) the file is not zero bits and
    B) I disabled the antivirus software
and my zen app will still not copy the normal.dot file but it will copy another generic file from the same place where my normal.dot file is located

  • Office 2010, Appdata, Roaming user profile and Normal.dot

    Hello,
We have roaming profile on our domain users and they are working fine within the network.
When they are at home using the same computers, they login with a cached copy of their domain profile.
    Server is 2008 R2, Windows 7 x64 clients and Office 2010 x64 package.
When the users go home, they get "The file Normal.dot cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents" and "Word cannot open the existing file (Normal)" error when they open Word 2010.
If they use VPN or connect remotely to the network, everything is fine. But when they are at home and just want to open a document from their USB stick, this happens.
The users Documents, Desktop, Favorites etc are mapped to DFS shares in the network.
This of course means, they don't have access to them at home, which is fine.
On the ADM template for Office 2010, the User Template path is set to  : "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates"
AppData folders is redirected to localprofile for the above to work and under the "Exclude Directories in romaing profile" we have added the entire "AppData\Roaming" (we are testing so that is fine for now) but still the "Appdata\Roaming"
travels with the roaming profile which means the Template path becomes unavailable (or so it seems) when the users disconnect from the network.
But what is confusing is, I can still browse to the above path manually, but Word 2010 some how seems to think its not there.
We do not want to use Offline feature (yet), and want to find if there is any other method of solving this.
    Ramu V Ramanan

Thanks Jeff. I don't want to go down that second path, autorecover is not our foe here, its the 'Templates folder'
As for the first part, that doesn't work. The problem is word still looks for the path "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates" which it thinks is not
available, when it is (as its exempted from being roaming using the registry value/GPO). Moreover, when the user is disconnected from the network, they can't click Modify and change the path, it simply doesn't do anything when you click Modify on
the screen to change the path to the template file.
We are considering ditching the roaming profiles, especially because the machines are now travelling outside the network. Or creating a special folder in all those machines where we can put a copy of the normal.dot. This is only affecting about 100 such
users, other users who have local profiles on the machines are fine.
    Cheers,
    Ramu

  • Spry tool tip does not work in template or child pages within an editable region. Why not?

Ok. so I am getting pretty frustrated. I take the time to learn how to use CSS and to create a template page for a Contractor Site (www.ContractorInsurance.net). The idea is to create a page that I can use for different classes of Contractors...right?
Then I get all happy about being able to insert ToolTip onto pages to help the user. Great!
LIfe to turn to Sorrow after nearly five hours of searching for a "eeking" answer.
So what good does it do to have an Editable region to update if we cannot have the flexibility to insert a tool tip on child pages?  Ok so the fast solution is to what... Have a question mark image, insert another apDiv, name it toolTip_Not and provide it with a show=hide behavior?
    RRRRRrrr...
This really sucks not being able to find a solution within a reasonable amount of time.

I have tried thank you. However...it is still not working.

If you have a look at the following simple document with a tooltipTooltip trigger goes here.
    Tooltip content goes here.
you will notice that a couple of lines have been placed in the HEAD section of the document. When using DW templates, the HEAD section is usually not editable, hence the error mesaage. By default, your template should have an editable region in it just before the closing tag. It looks like this: <!-- TemplateBeginEditable name="head" > <! TemplateEndEditable --> Dreamweaver should be able to find that editable region and insert the
<script> tag there automatically. Because you don't have an editable region like that in the <head>, open the master template, and paste the code above just before the closing </head>
    tag. Gramps

Hi, the installation of the Acrobat was completely normal. After installation, I could not make any more changes to the text blocks / autotext, that are stored in the files normal.dot. Word makes no changes to the file normal.dot when closing of Word. I uninstalled Acrobat again and the changes of the text blocks normal.dot are again possible. Something in Acrobat blocked the storage of text blocks.
