Does PE9 always re-encode files?

Hi,
Maybe this is too basic but: If a I just want to trim and merge files, is there a way on PE9 to export without re-encoding?

Windows Explorer will display tag properties for mp3 & wma files, not aac (m4a) or wav. It is possible for mp3 files to contain multiple tags but only one will be displayed. Try inspecting the problem fils with a third party tag editor to see if you can tell what is going on. For mp3 files, provided all the details that you want the file to have are displayed in iTunes, you can try using the right-click option Convert ID3 Tag > None a few times followed by Convert ID3 Tag > ID3v2.3 which may well help.

Why does InDesign always open multiple files in reverse number order?

Whenever I select multiple InDesign files to open, despite being named accordingly Page_01, Page_02, Page_03, etc. InDesign always opens them in reverse order tabs. If I open 10 spreads at once instead of staring at page 1 I'm looking at the back.
Is there any way to fix this? It's driving me mad. I cannot think of why it would be doing this.

Create a book (File -> New -> Book...) and add your files to it. Rearrange the files to the order you want. Then select the needed files and double-click to open them. The tabs will be populated respecting the order the files appear in the book.
Important: BEFORE adding the files to the newly-created book, go to the book panel menu, choose "Book Page Numbering Options..." and deactivate "Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers", to avoid unwanted renumbering of your pages.

Why does Excel always open old files?

Since upgrading to Mavericks, whenever I open Excel, the last few spreadsheets I was working on when I upgraded are always opened. I can't seem to prevent this behavior. Is anyone else seeing it? Is there a way to stop it doing so?

If you right click a jpg file, you'll see a contextual menu, select 'Get Info' and in the resulting window about mid way down you will see a drop down menu "Open With', select Preview from the list and then don't forget to select "Change All'.
Now all your jpg's will open in Preview.

Open file dialog search does not show the correct files

When i use "open file" in the menu of, for example Pages, and then type a word of my desired file name into the search dialog it does not always find the file. Searching in Finder works. And the file is where it is supposed to be.
Does it use different kind of searches? I have "reindexed" spotlight but no avail.
Of course i can look for the file manually and then start pages by double clicking the file...
Any ideas?

I'm not sure how Pages treats this, but it's possible that from an Open File dialog it may only search either the current directory or the default documents folder. Not sure about this as I'm not a Pages' user.

My iPad 1 mail does not always sync completely through iCloud

Background: Over the last week or so I have noticed that my iPad mail does not always sync completely with either mail on my iPhone or iMac. It receives all messages but does not always delete or file them as managed on either on my iMac or iPhone. My iPad and iPhone mail settings are the same and set to "push". My iPhones does not have this issue. All other syncs such as addresses, calendar and photo stream seem to work just fine. Is this due to my iPad mail settings or an Apple iCloud issue?

Do you have Sync Books selected in the Books Tab in iTunes?

Media Encoder CS6 does not always "Use Previews"

I've attempted several transcodes using pre-rendered timelines in Premiere Pro. Media encoder does not always use the preview files despite the appropriate box being checked. Any suggestions what I can look for? I don't see that I am doing anything different between the times it works and the times it doesn't.

How can I set mail to always attach pdf files as attachments rather than insert into the mail message?

But if you receive an email with a PDF attachment - which appears as text embedded in the email rather than an attachment are you really saying that the only way to solve this is to resend the email to yourself so that it will then appear as a PDF attachment?

i want to generate a file in run mode and that file contain username and password and i dont want to save as text file
is there away i can save it in encoded file that cant be opend easily?

Users will always be able to open the file, some way or the other. What you don't want is the ability to understand it - you want to preserve the confidentiality. First, you need to determine what needs to be protected. Usually the username is known and therefore no protection is provided. The password always need protection. Also, you need to determine your recovery procedures. Users WILL forget their passwords. That has an impact on how to protect the password. If you want the ability to tell the user their password, then you may want to encrypt the password so the administrator can decrypt it. If instead you want to give them a new password, then you can hash the password. With that technique you won't be able to recover the lost password. If you encrypt the password, you need to have a key management scheme because you need to manage the key that encrypt the passwords - that is equivalent to a master key.
I've seen systems where the password does more than just authenticate the user. It is also used as a key to encrypt additional information. If that's your case, you need to encrypt the password. There are other considerations for your systems. The ideal way to understand the best solution is via a security assessment.
Check Crypto-G: www.visecurity.com. It is a very good library with algorithms for encryption, hashing (message digest) and other cryptographic functions.

[SOLVED] xfce4 automounting problem on usb dev with utf8 encoded files

I have problem of auto mounting usb external drive contains utf8 encoded files under xfce4.
Using hal and dbus for usb device detection.
Heard that I need to add iocharset=utf8 under fstab or hal fdi configure files and tried them all but didn't work
usb devices with vfat always got mounted with default charset.
I found out that exo-mount is the one doing the actual mounting and that it is the one that cannot take all extra mounting options such as iocharset etc.
Have tried gnome to mount this hard drive and works find with nautilus option that let me set various mount options for each harddrive.
Is there any way to replace exo-mount with some other alternative mounting tools that work with thunar?
Any workaround will be helpful as long as I can mount my usb drives with prefer charset so that I don't have to guess all ???marked files.
Heard that xubuntu replaced that exo-mount with gnome-mount to handle drives with extra mount options such as iocharset.
but I am pretty new to configuring things and couldn't find the step by step instruction for this so please provide the complete solution.
Link to the pages that explain workaround would be nice as well.

Found the patch for exo-mount so that it takes additional mount options HAL suggests.

Encoded Files Location in Toast 8 Titanium

Hi... I have Toast 8 Titanium and I'm trying to create a "DVD Video." I just have an .avi file that I'm trying to burn onto a DVD. When I start the burn process, Toast says it's Encoding the files. Well, it crashed in the middle of encoding and I had to restart the process... Now it says there isn't enough room on my hard drive. Where are the encoded files stored on my computer so I can delete them??

Presuming that encoding is also known as conversion, and that's only a guess, then the files should be in our documents directory in the "Roxio Converted Items" subdirectory.
These converted items are deleted by default when Toast Quits, but of course when it crashes, that may not be the case.
If you run Toast and look in the Preferences under Storage you will see these things.
It also lists Temporary Storage but does not give the actual file location. This is another place to look.
I don't see any specific references in the .plist.
You can always contact Roxio support and ask them - they are usually extremely helpful and quick at answering such questions.

CONVERSION FROM ANSI ENCODED FILE TO UTF-8 ENCODED FILE

I have some issues in conversion of ANSI encoded file to utf encoded file. let me tell you in detail
I have installed the Language Support for Thai Language on My Operating System.
now, when I open my notepad and add thai character on the file and save it as ansi encoding. it saves it perfectly and also I able to see it on opening the file again.
This file need to be read by my application , store in database and should display thai character on jsp after fetching the data from database. Currently it is showing junk character on jsp reason being that my database (UTF8 compliant database) has junk data . it has junk data because my application is not able to read it correctly from the file.
If I save the file with encoding as UTF 8 it works fine. but my business requirement is such that the file is system generated and by default it is encoded in ANSI format. so I need to do the conversion of encoding from ANSI to UTF8 . so Any of you can guide me on the same how to do this conversion ?

Guessing the encoding of a text file by examining its contents is tricky at best, and should only be done as a last resort. If the file is auto-generated, I would first try reading it using the system default encoding. That's what you're doing whenever you read a file with a FileReader. If that doesn't work, try using an InputStreamReader and specifying a Thai encoding like TIS-620 or cp838 (I don't really know anything about Thai encodings; I just picked those out of a quick Google search). Once you've read the file correctly, you can write the text to a new file using an OutputStreamWriter and specifying UTF-8 as the encoding. It shouldn't really be necessary to transcode files like this, but without knowing a lot more about your situation, that's all I can suggest.
As for native2ascii, it isn't for encoding conversions. All it does is replace each non-ASCII character with its six-character Unicode escape, so "voilá" becomes "voil\u00e1". In other words, it avoids the problem of character encodings by converting the file's contents to a form that can be stored as ASCII. It's mainly used for converting property or resource files to a form that can be read by the Properties and ResourceBundle classes.

Does time machine identify any file replications?

I am wondering whether anyone knows more about this, looked into this.
- I know that time machine does use links to ensure that files that belong to multiple snapshots (successive snapshots)
are not backed more than once.
However, recently I had to reset my Mac (MacBook Pro) from 10.7.5 to 10.7.4, because there were problems in operation.
(actually with time machine and Spotlight, but I do not think, this is the issue here).
I simply reinstalled the version from about two weeks earlier - in the meantime there were not a large number of changes.
However, the next time the backup was about 80 GB.
This made me wonder under which conditions does TM actually identify a file that it has already backuped before
and it does only need to link it and not back up it up again:
only if it is at the very same position and it has no modified change date (of course also no content change)?
- this would mean the complete system actully would have been backuped again - not nice, but would roughly fit the size.
or are there more conditions?
It also seems that any files that are moved lead to a replicate backup. - the file at the new position is treated as a new backup.
Also if temporarily some location was excluded from the backup and then the exclusion is removed, it seems the next backup contains
an all-fresh replica.
In these and many other cases, a lot of space could be gained, if multiple occurances of files would be treated as a single file with
a hard-link in the backup.
a) It seems this is in no way addressed by TM
b) It seems that this might be compatible with the way TM manages backups. (files can be hardlinks)
Thus, does an utility exist, which is able to identify such copies in a backup and replace the identical copies by a single
copy with hard links? Does someone know more about the inner management of TM-backups? Could this approach work?
I know that this is not directly supported by TM, but I am just curious whether something like this exists, it seems to me
that due to my restoration and the way I handle data (e.g., put everything for working on the desktop - later move it to the
final destination), there would be very many opportunities to thus compress the size of TM-backups.

It says it will notify you after a backup is deleted. That's the only option available. You will have to open the TM backup and see where the file dates you wish to keep are and manually track them if you need TM to store files you deleted from your current system.
If you delete a file from your current system that you need to keep long term, then I wouldn't rely on a TM backup to store it. You should either keep it on the computer and you will always have a TM backup. If you need to clear space on the computer, you should back up important files to another location such as a flash drive or external drive.

ERROR WHILE ENCODING FILE

Hi Everyone
While burning a DVDSP3 disk of about 3.5 gigs, I get this error message: "error while encoding file". This happens about 7 hours into the burn. I have tried it twice. The second time after fixing preferences, etc.
I am using a G-4 laptop with a Lacie RAID 5 external drive.
Reading this forum, I see the problem is not unusual. But I never encountered this problem in the past.
So why is this happening now?
Also, to fix it the most frequent suggestion is to export from FCP-4 using compressor.
Does this solve the problem?
And what preset should I use?
The compressor help menu has a lot of information but does not specifically tell you what preset to use for a standard DVD-R burned on DVD SP 3.
The DVD-R, like most DVD's, has to play on any NTSC television or any computer.
If anyone can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. Because I am stumped.

On the pane issue, it will be different because you are running an earlier version of Compressor.
On the A.Pack side of things when you launch the Application you will see tabs where you can set the same things in the image on the website (dialog normalization to -31 etc.) Let me know if you find them, or I can get some screenshots
On the settings you can try one of the settings that will fit your video. 60 Minutes will be too short, so you need one of the 90 minutes settings (or longer, which knocks down the video bitrate a bit, but may prevent stutters, but for the short term use a 90 minute setting.) The difference between the settings (Good, Fast etc, I do not remember all of the Compressor 1 variations and not in front of a computer right now with it loaded, can look later if you like) if using different types of encoding- VBR, CBR http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_4.php).
I am pretty sure rates are adjusted based on the lesser time being higher rates, while speed/quality is VBR/CBR. Take a look at the video rates being used, and makee sure the MAX Rate does not exceed 7.4 (or a bit less to be safe)
You may just want to try the fast setting first to see if it cures the build issue, then move on if you are in the clear. (Or you can try the two pass build for overnight). Make sure you have room on the disc where you are building the encoded file.
