Does PHD Login Sync Work at All?

Am I expecting too much? But does the login sync even work for anyone? After I setup a user in no instances zero have I got login sync to work as described after an initial sync not even 1 time!!!!!!!
I've got brand new 10.5.8 server/client nothing configured for PHD except mobile preferences for PHD and it never works. Followed multiple guides just not happening.
This would be a great feature for us but as of now I'm giving up and moving on to something else because my experience is not a good one I wouldn't consider using any part of the Mobility prefs as it seems to work NEVER.

PHD setup is a bit ridiculous in that it doesn't quite seem to do what you expect. At least for my district's setup we had to enable both login / logout sync and background sync for login sync to work. Your best bet is to do all you configuration in the com.apple.homesync preference found under Preferences Details tab in WGM, do some exploring in there you get a lot more granular control and discover the settings make a lot more sense.

Trying to update my Itunes software, now it does not want to work at all, givin strange error messages.
First, when trying to sync ipod touch to Itunes, nothing happened. After that, Itunes suggested downloading and installing updates but now updates will not finish installation correctly and launch error messages. Any ideas?
    TKS !

These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 800736B3s, or a different error code? If they're different, what codes are you getting in Windows Update?

  • PHD Login Sync

I have a problem with Portable Home Directories. Our setup consists of 10.4.9 clients, a 10.4 server and AD in a Golden Trinagle setup. Everything works fine except for one little hitch. The login sync does not happen. It does when you login a new account (i.e. an account that has not logged in to the machine before) but every other login does not cause a sync. Background and logout syncs work fine. So, when you login, the login sync doesn't happen but if you wait a couple of minutes the background sync happens and then everything works as expected. I've set the log level of MirrorAgent to 4 and turned printTrees on. However the login sync entry still looks quite sparse.

I thought it might be our groups so I created a plain group with the vanilla sync and created a new user and home directory. Same deal. Our SOE might have been the issue (we have some customised scripts) so I installed a vanilla 10.4.7 client and bound it to AD and OD. Authentication and initial sync worked without issue but again, subsequent login syncs did not happen.
Before I lose my marbles, I'd like to ask three questions. One, is this SUPPOSED to happen? In other words, is this the default behaviour and I just never noticed? Two, has anyone had this issue before? Three, does anyone have any idea why it might be doing this? Please keep in mind that every time we tested a new scenario (i.e. changed the parameters of the test), we cleared the home directory on the server (fully. all hidden files included) and we removed the cached account from the client and removed references from NetInfo).
Any ideas, suggestions or anecdotes would be highly appreciated.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

No, I'm not using Active Directory. By my understanding, the key that enables PHD to work is the fact that a Kerberos ticket is in place after the login window so that the connection to the file server hosting the home folder can happen without intervention. I know that automounting is not required as I have machines no longer connecting to my Open Directory that still happily PHD sync at login, background and logout.
Perhaps you can test manually connecting the shared location of the PHD right after login to see if it can happen without intervention. The ability for background sync to work would indicate that this would happen. It might be something to do with the timing of the login, ticket granting, hosted share connection. I'm sorry I can't offer more. Good luck.

  • How does the login process works with a bind to AD?

    Hi there,
I am trying to bind our mac to our Active Directory. Before doing I'd like to understand well how the login process works. Is there any reference I could look up to?
For what I've understood until now with an example user "testAccount" and no automount and no AD extension and the ADplugin set as:
    a) if mobile is set, then a /Users/testAccount is created and if UNC is set then a smbHome is mounted "on desktop". If UNC is not set, do nothing more
    b) if force is set, then a /Users/testAccount is created and if UNC is set then a smbHome is mounted "on desktop". If UNC is not set, do nothing more
    c) if force is NOT set:
--c1) if UNC is not set and cannot map NFSHomedirectory at all, then login the user with such a temporary home
--c2) if UNC is set mount SMBhome and use it as mounted home folder (NFSHomeDirectory-->SMBhome "/Network/Servers/my.server.com/users/testAccount")
--c3) if UNC is not set then retrieve the homeDirectory-NIS's attribute in AD (NFSHomeDirectory--> "/homes/testAccount") and create /homes/testAccount
my doubt now is point c2) after I login in with a "#mount" I get:
    trigger on /Network/Servers/my.server.com/users (autofs, automounted)
//[email protected]/users on /Network/Servers/my.server.com/users (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, automounted, mounted by testaccount)
but my SMBhome is not correctly mounted on remote server (but the Library folder and MCX files are created!) and I get home errors because the system is looking for "/homes/testAccount", which I don't know where it is coming out from given that a
    #dscl /Active\ Directory/my.server.com -read /Users/testaccount |grep homes gives only out dsAttrTypeNative:unixHomeDirectory: /homes/testAccount
    thanks,
    a.

  • How does the Login process work?

    Hello,
How exactly does the default 'Login' process on the login page work?
When the following code is executed:
    wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.login(
    P_UNAME => :P1_USERNAME,
    P_PASSWORD => :P1_PASSWORD,
    P_SESSION_ID => v('APP_SESSION'),
    P_FLOW_PAGE => :APP_ID||':2'
Does the execution continue to the code below or is it halted and the user is redirected to the flow page?
I need to set the username and the user id (from SQL query WHERE username = :P1_USERNAME) ONLY IF the authentication has been successful, otherwise NULL them. What's the best way to do this?
After the wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.login(...), how can I check if the user has been authenticated?
    Thanks :)
    Pavel

    hi pavel--
wwv_flow_custom_auth_std.login sets :APP_USER and then redirects to p_flow_page upon successful login. when you say, "I need to set the username and the user id (from SQL query WHERE username = :P1_USERNAME) *ONLY IF* the authentication has been successful, otherwise NULL them" i'm guessing that you really want your user to not be logged in upon unsuccessful credential verification. if so, that would already be handled by wwv_flow_custom_auth_std. a good way to see this in action is to examine how the Sample Application handles authentication. the login page 101 does call wwv_flow_custom_auth_std with the supplied credentials, but if you don't pass the Authentication Function check specified in the Sample Application's custom authentication scheme, the session is still invalid, and the user is still on page 101. i'm pretty sure that's the behavior you want, but please clarify if not.
    thanks,

  • Does iMovie 08 actually work at all?

Long story short, I was trying to make a dvd of some old movies of our family for my daughter's upcoming wedding. The movies are in .mpg format. iMovie won't import them as .mpg. After reading some articles and forum posts I googled, I've used MPEG Streamclip to convert them to DV (which iMovie wouldn't import) and to .mov (again, which iMovie wouldn't import) and so I'm stuck. So, does iMovie actually do anything at all besides suck up space on my drive? If so, you couldn't prove it by me.
    <Edited out by the Hosts>

MPEG Streamline has a mass of options to choose from when converting video formats - which unless you have some pointers, can produce some very ******* language.
So here are a few snippets of information I've learned from a few other users and claim no credit for the advice, well except to say thank you to the original posters for their help and assistance.
    So here goes...
In order for you to be able to import your DVD footage into iMovie 08 you need to change the format of the video files.
I use MPEG Streamclip which is a free download from http://www.squared5.com/ to convert the video.
Once you have downloaded the software and installed it, pop your DVD into your iMac, open up Streamclip, then click FILE > OPEN DVD > Select the DVD from the Devices. You should see VIDEO_TS but ignore this, simply click on SELECT, then select from the drop-down list which track on your DVD you wish to open and click on Select.
After a few seconds the video should open in a new window. If you see 'Warning, the stream may have timecode breaks', click 'FIX NOW', the next page opens, make sure that 'DO NOT SKIP ANY FRAME' is ticked and click 'PROCEED'.
Wait until the video is processed and the opened page shows the video.
Now click on FILE > EXPORT TO QUICKTIME, select compression 'APPLE DV - PAL' from the dropdown menu, and move the quality bar to 100%. Click on 'Make movie'.
From the next page rename the video footage to something more memorable, and save it to th Desktop or somewhere else NOT the DVD which it defaults to - if you forget it will fail!!!
You can now import this video footage into iMovie 08 using the FILE >IMPORT MOVIES from within iMovie 08
Sailingmaster, I hope this helps you out with making a DVD for your daughter's upcoming wedding, and note, I've been using iMovie 08 for approx two months now, and find it extremely intuitive to use.

  • How does Address Book syncing work?

I have an Iphone 4 o/s5 and a MacBook Air.  Under iCal preferences you can choose how often it syncs to iCloud and pushes (I guess) to my Mac and Iphone.  But the Address book is kind of a mystery to me.  I thought it was working but then I made some changes and it didn't seem to register them.  So does one have to have Safari running in the background (i.e. being 'signed in' to the master iCloud account) all the time?  Just how does it work in order to have changes in both iCal AND any contact info in Address book push to all devices?  (I also have a Win7 machine with the iCloud console but get Itunes errors - haven't figured that out yet!)

    I found the answer myself.

  • Officejet 4622, new printer today. black does not seem to work at all but all the colors do.

I print a test page through diagnostic tool and black square is blank. I cannot tell if the alignment prints properly as I have no example of what it should look like to ensure it is correct since the alignment fails to detect the alignment page. Scans work fine. I tried cleaning the print heads and still don't seem to get black to work correctly. This is a new printer purchased today 9.30.2012.

just in case anyone else encounters this problem, heres whats really going on and heres how to fix this annoying issue. its relatively easy to do and more efficient than wasting money on a new printer or having it repaired  like most people end up doing.
whats going on? the ink has clogged the printing heads and has solidified shut. the "clean print heads" feature the printer came with does not have the ability to fix this. that feature is to clean up dirty heads, not clogged heads. why hp decided to make this model without a simple to remove cradle is beyond me, but fortunately the cradle DOES come out and can be cleaned with hot water.
theres a few items you will need to make this happen the easy way or you could just break out the tree limb loppers, like i did, and vent your frustrations.
what you will need: a pair of needle nosed pliers, a T9 torx screwdriver head ( auto parts stores sell them for a couple bucks), some paper towels and an area to work (its easiest to do this in a corner of a room, on a small table or the floor).  keep in mind you are dealing with ink, so change out of your good clothes just in case and also grab a paper plate or a few sheets of printing paper to set the ink cartridges on as you work.
         1)  ok. lets get started. !!!FIRST UNPLUG THE PRINTER RIGHT NOW, SO YOU DONT ACCIDENTALLY DIE BY ELECTROCUTION!!!  i forgot and when i began unscrewing the first 6 screws, the chime kept going off and im like **bleep**? i was impressed by the safety measures hp took while engineering this model.
         2) the printer is now unplugged and then go to your corner work area and place the printer so there is a wall or barrier on its left and also a wall or barrier behind it. do this while facing it as if you were about to use it.
         3) now, what you have to do is open the printer like you are going to change the ink and on the right side there is a plastic guide that prevents the top from opening all the way. look on the side and you will notice it could pop off with your fingers. pop it off and open it all the way open so you could get at the screws the lid would have prevented you from accessing.
         4) lean the scanner portion and top portion against the back wall.
         5) all screws you will be removing are size T9H torx screws. there are ten total. there are 2 black screws in the front top and then 4 black screws in the back top. remove them and put them on your paper plate.
         6) next is 1 short silver colored screw located under the control panel, use your finger and feel around  beneath the  *  button. unscrew it, put it on the paper plate.
         7) next you are going to remove the face/control panel to get at the last 3 screws so locate the little illustrations on the top of the printer, there are 2 on the bottom left and 5 on the bottom right (1 and 2 on the left explain paper jam removals and then 1-5 on the right explain changing ink cartridges). then about half an inch south of the number 5 illustration, on the lip, is a plastic bracket. six inches to the left is another one then 6 more inches to the left, under the illustration number 2 (paper jam removal) is a third bracket. undo them using your fingernails. and just flip it up like car hood and then lay it down on the main top portion of the printer, minding the flat wire which is connected into the circuit board of the control panel (if the flat wire popped out because you got too rowdy on it, then simply insert it back in when you reassemble).
         8) next, unscrew the 3 longer silver screws which are located under the panel you just popped off. there is 1 on the left and 2 on the rightish side. toss em on the paper plate.
         9) now that all the screws are removed, take the face panel and partially pop it back together.
         10) then take the whole top ( the part with the little illustrations and lift it like a car hood, ONLY THIS TIME OPEN IT TO THE LEFT and balance it on the edge of the printer, leaning it towards the wall or barrier on your left. BE CAREFUL NOT TO YANK ON THE FRUIT STRIPE COLORED WIRES ON THE LEFT AND ALSO THE BLACK FLAT WIRE THAT CONNECTS THE SCANNING PORTION TO THE MAIN PORTION OF THE PRINTER.
        11) next grab the needle nose pliers and remove the 2 silver colored tension springs located behind the printer cartridges. pay attention where they were attached so you remember where they go during assembly. take a pic with your phone if you have to or simply re-figure it out like i did. toss em on the paper plate.
        12) then disconnect the 2 large flat wires and 1 small flatwire attached to the back of the ink carriage. take a picture or remember like i did. i imagine bad things may occur if you reverse them on re-assembly. grab the phone and take a quik pic to be sure.
        13) now remove the ink carriage, cartridges and all, by lifting the front first.  be careful of the little transparent ribbon in there that moves the carriage left to right and vice versa. you dont want to damage that little guy. now take the carriage to your paper plate. dont drip any ink or accidentally get it on your fingers without knowing or you will make a mess.
        14) remove the ink cartridges and set them on the paper plate, ink side up to avoid a mess, these things sometimes drip. set the plate off to the side. its time to clean the print heads.
        15) then go to the sink, with the empty ink carriage and turn the water on hot and then just let the empty ink carriage sit there with the water mainly going through the screen of the clogged color (inspect and make sure there isnt a little rubber gasket surrounding the little screen if there is dont lose it. i didnt look too closely and i dont think hp has them but i know some other printers do). it wont stain the sink but wash down any ink as it comes out to be sure. also notice there is a small circuit board attached to it. dont bang it up but getting it wet doesnt matter.
        16) keep doing this until the water runs clear.
        17) then use your finger and rub the screen gently with your finger and then rinse it, washing away the ink until the water runs clear. continue this until there is no more ink and the screens are clean. do it to all the colors just for good measures. the problem color that wouldnt print, you will notice takes longer to clean than the other colors.
        18) now look on the bottom side of the carriage. those wierd looking things are the heads. rinse them with hot water and wipe them with paper towels. then flip it over and blast the screen side again. also in between the screenside and the heads (on the side of the carriage) is an opening that is also probably gunked up. blast it with water too. then flip it over and wipe the heads again. repeat this step until nothing wipes away or until you are sick and tired.
        19) shake off then use paper towels to dry the entire unit. make sure the unit is dry.  especially inside the female plugs. blow in it or break out the hair dryer and gently dry it. dont sit there and melt it though with the blow dryer. but the sooner it dries the less likely your ink cartridges sitting on the paper plate will dry out. the ink wont dry out fast just dont take a nap or go out on a date until you are reassembled with the ink portion.
        20) now you have completed the cleaning of the heads and probably wont need to do this again for the length of time it was since you bought the printer. and just like a roadtrip you used a map to navigate, you will use these instructions in reverse for re-assembly. but keep in mind when re-inserting the 3 flatwires you disconnected from the back of the ink carriage, make sure you have the little metal contact points on the flatwires (male side) inserted so they touch the little metal contact points on the carriage plugs (female side). ALSO BE EXTRA CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE BLACK FLATWIRE CONNECTING THE SCANNER PORTION TO THE MAIN PRINTER PORTION. THERE IS A LITTLE GROOVE IN THE PLASTIC WHERE IT CAN BE SEATED TO GUARANTEE NO CRIMPAGE. USE IT. also make sure the 2 hinges of the scanner portion/lid are seated properly before fastening the the top with the 6 black screws.
now re-assemble the printer and reinstall the ink cartridges. and then plug in the unit, and turn it on.  if you get any notifications on the control panel saying the carriage wont move, then open the hood and take out the ink cartridges, push around and make sure the carriage is seated properly and that the tensioner springs are in place properly. repeat if neccesary until notifications go away or just do a test print and disregard the notification if you messed with it already a few times. thats what happened to me and the notification went away on its own. once its online, open the hp utilities and press the "clean the heads" button. do it 2x in a row and you will be back in style, with extremely rich and bold colors and yes, raven black print.
    p.s.
you can always take your aggressions out with the tree limb loppers or the tin snips like i did and snip out the center plastic that prevents you from taking the carriage directly out. this eliminates disassembly and re-assembly entirely. just make sure you DO NOT CUT THE TRANSPARENT RIBBON THAT MOVES THE CARRIAGE BACK AND FORTH. this way the next time it happens it only takes you 10 minutes before you are up and printing.
    enjoy!  -  Porf

  • Private browsing worked fine on the last version, but does not seem to work at all in the new 4 version, so what is the problem? I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times but that does not solve the problem.

My points above lay out the problem and I get messages telling me it can't find the files....Why is it not working when it did just fine right up until you came out with version 4???
Any suggestions? I may have to go to another browser, but I have always like your product best.

You are welcome. There has never been a need to move that one before, but try it since you can always put it back.
If the same, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • How does the contact syncing work?

I am a little confused about the syncing process. I currently have exactly the same contacts on my iphone 4 as in my address book on my macbook. If I have the automatic syncing of contacts selected via itunes, which way do they sync?
If I put a new contact on my phone will it be wiped and my contacts revert to whats in the address book?
Or does it work the other way, my address book reverts to what iv got on my iphone?
Or do they merge and not delete anything? If they merge, do they combine an individual's details, ie an email address on my mac and that same person's mobile number under the same name on my iphone merge into one contact profile?
    Thanks

Are you aware if this is bidirectional syncing for iCal Events created on the iPhone 4 using iTunes 10. I have seemed to have lost this functionality, or maybe I am just not aware that it is occurring?

  • Does label template copy work at all?

    Hi,
i hadn't time to investigate if this is a known problem, i must dash in 5 minutes, however i tried both on apex.oracle.com and on my local apex instance, both version 3.0.1, and i can't get the "label template copy" to work.
I click on the copy icon on the right, i put the name of the new label template, i get the success message "template copied", but there is no trace of the new label template.
All the report filters are disabled.
Can someone else confirm this or am i just dreaming?
    Bye,

    Hello,
Yup sure looks like a bug if you use that icon. Thanks for catching that.
You can still copy the template using create and then picking

  • Does "Push" just not work at all?

    iPhone 3GS 3.1.3.
Our office just moved our e-mail over to Google Gmail. I set up Gmail with IMAP access. Google Sync is NOT set up at this point (I'm an admin for our Google Apps account). I set up an IMAP account in MS Outlook 2003, and it does a great job of keeping everything perfectly in sync on both sides. If I do something in either Outlook or Gmail web interface, the other is nearly instantly updated.
Seems to not be the case on the iPhone. I set up the Gmail account as directed by Google, turned on Push, but I never get anything until I actually open Mail and check the inbox. It's pretty much acting like Push is off and Fetch is set to manual.

IMAP doesn't provide push functionality to my knowledge. Fetch is set to manual by default - at least in my iPhone4/iOS 4. (Presumably to save juice.) You'd have to enable it manually in settings. Fetch is not as cost effective as push, but hey, this is why BlackBerry has so much business.

  • By default does iCloud automatically sync apps to all authorised computers on my account?

My iTunes account has 5 computers authorised on it, including my recently ex-girlfriend's macbook. I want to know if the apps I've been downloading on my Ipod touch will automatically sync and download on her computer via iCloud. All my settings for iCloud are default. I've downloaded some online dating apps like Skout, which at this point, I don't want her to know about. She knows my iTunes password but she wouldn't have any reason to log in. Thanks in advance everyone, your assistance is much appreciated.

btw i've de-authorised her computer and changed my password since this thought came to me

  • Does Kies Outlook syncing work?

I am looking for a non-cloud solution to syncing Outlook 2013 to my Galaxy 3 phone -- mainly because I don't trust Google with my contact information.  So I was pleased to find a solution on the Samsung Website called Kies, an app you can download to your computer and use to transfer and update contacts, calendars and tasks.  However, I've also found numerous comments in android forums that refer to Kies as "buggy" and tell horror stories about failed efforts to make it work.  I would be grateful to hear from anyone who's had experience -- good or bad -- syncing Outlook to their Galaxy 3.  Contacts is most important to me, calendar second most important, and tasks a distant third.  I would love to have a good USB method, but if that's not possible I'll settle for the best available cloud method -- whatever is easiest to set up and keeps going with fewest glitches.  Thanks!

It is not easy, but I can get it to work.  It usually crashes on the first attempt so I find I am more successful if I restart my computer before a second attempt.  Be on the lookout for a Outlook warning that requires giving the program permission to access data for a period of time.  The default is one minute, I take it up to ten because sometimes the process is slower than others.
I update my contacts, calendar and tasks separately.  There is still the option in contacts which way to sych (to outlook only, to device only, or both ways); unfortunately, after the last upgrades calendars and tasks are locked at both ways.
