Does Photos app limit download of photos with CCK to 16Gb on all iPads?

Hello y'all,
New member here. Long time MacBookPro user and now about to get an iPad2 3G for traveling. I'm a photographer, shooting RAW, and in the next year and a half I'll make a few trips (on a shoestring) without carrying the Macbook, only taking the iPad with me. At a certain point I'll spend two or three months in areas where internet acces lacks completely or is bad (so no cloud storage). Of course I am considering the Hyperdrive, and / or a lot of extra SD cards for back-up storage.
At this moment I'm trying to decide between a 32 and a 64Gb iPad, and for this I have a question I couldn't get answered yet. So I hope you really knowleageble folks here can help me out!
When reading on the net, I found a couple of remarks stating that the Photos app limits the storage of picture download through the CCK to 16Gb on any iPad including the 64Gb one. Now, if that is true, it won't make sense for me to get the 64Gb and the 32Gb will have to do. But if it's not true, and I can store more than 16Gb of RAWs using the CCK, then it makes a lot of sense for me to get the 64Gb.
FYI: I'll use the iPad for e-mail, surfing and photo storage. No videos, little music, very few apps, no serious PP, etc.
And yes, I'm aware all the pics uploaded through the CCK will come in one single folder, so it will be very impractical to upload a lot and then cull. But I do have the discipline to cull very heavily and on a daily basis, which leads me to believe one big folder for a LOT of pics could be workable for me still.
So, my question to you all here is: does anybody know if the Photos app puts a limit of 16Gb to the storage of RAWs uploaded with the CCK, even in a 64Gb iPad?
Or will the iPad just not be able to deal with a folder containing say 40Gb of RAWs? A matter of RAM maybe?
THANKS a lot for answering!
Best regards,
Jeanette

The 16 gig limitation was reported last year when the iPad 1 was first introduced. I have not seen a report of this being resolved yet and followup requests on this forum were not confirming a fix.
You may be able to work around the limitation to a degree by using a 3rd party app like SortShots or some other app to manage your photo syncing and reserving the CCK-available 16 gig for uploading raw photo files from your camera. I have NOT tested this workaround so it's only a theory until proven.
For folders, I thought the CCK divided the uploads by date, but I haven't used the CCK for 6 months, so I may be wrong. Others will correct me if I am mistaken on this. (or anything else)
As far as 32 or 64gig, since this is an option, you may want to go big since memory can not be added later.
One more note, I think the cck's USB adaptor will allow you to use a flash drive for photo file storage that can be read by the iPad if the flash drive is configured with a DCIM folder. Not sure what the limitations are using this option. (feedback from others?) I don't think the iPad can write to the DCIM folder, but read-only.
Hope this helps some....

  • Can anyone recommend an app for downloading bank statements (.csv/.qif) directly on to my iPad

Can anyone recommend an app for downloading bank statements (.csv/.qif) directly on to my iPad that will allow me to analyse my money flow....no account management needed. I just need something v simple that can take my statement and produce graphs etc....thanks

1, Photos are stored within your computer's iTunes, you just use iTunes as a means for trasnferring them to the iPad. Connect your iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If you want more control over the photos that you copy to the iPad (e.g. the ability to delete them directly on the iPad, re-order them etc) then you could consider a third-party photo-management app instead of the built-in Photos app e.g. Photo Manager Pro
2, options include Apple's Pages app for Word documents and Numbers for Excel spreadsheets.  And from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
3, You first need an app on the iPad that supports the type of file that you want to copy to it - the iPad doesn't have a file system like a 'normal' computer, everything has to be associated with an app. As to how you then get the file to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.

  • Why does my app Documents have my photos in it?all of a sudden? I did not put them there! I'd like to delete them out of documents, but it will not let me, the app I mean? How am I delete the photos out of it?

HHi, I'm new here, but just this morning, I opened the app documents to load some information for study purposes. I saw a folder called photo library. Opened and saw all my photos in it. I did not place them in it. The app functions do not permit me to delete them. I have struggled with this all morning, and find myself here. I also ask a few friends who upon checking found a similar thing on their. IPads also. What we want to know is.........Hiw can we delete the photos out of the app Documents?
WHen we we got to lookin into it, we have found that we probably got this auto done with the new sharing feature and we will have to turn off photo share, which it says will delete all photos from iPad. Is this my only option?

Well you could have trashed your Silverlight install in some way.
That's what it looks like, but I'm not sure how, or how to fix it. I spent ages trying to get all the SL stuff installed, and had a lot of problems, mainly because of the issue with VS2010 SP1.
Does your app rely on a certificate though?
I wonder whether it's an issue with that.
It does, although I'm not sure why that would cause this problem.
Also, I get the same problem when running in VS, and if it were a certificate problem, I wouldn't expect that, as (I think) certificates aren't used when running in VS. Could be wrong on that, so if you know better, please correct me.
You realise, by the way, that Google have sety npapi disabled by default this month?

Ho hum, wonderful eh? Don't know what mine showed before, but I've got SL working in Chrome now, so it's academic (until September of course)
    Hope that helps.
Sadly, I don't think it does. I still get this error, whether running in VS, or running the production app. I really need to work out how to fix my SL install without having to uninstall and reinstall all of it yet again. I think that's the crux of the problem.
Thanks very much for the reply. Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Photos app only downloads pictures in "moments" view

I have "upgraded" to the Photos app on all my devices (ipad, macbook air and iphone).  After a few issues (pictures were not uploading from the macbook air) it all seems to work except on the ipad.  There I only see gray rectangles where I should see pictures unless I open them in "moments" view.  (ie in "collections" or "years") nothing downloads to the device. On the iphone, which uses the same settings (ie "optimise ipad storage"); all was downloaded.  I have 11 GB free on the ipad.
any idea how to get all the reduced size images to download to the ipad?
    thanks.

I was able to get my Journals working again by syncing all photos included in those Journals back from my Mac to the iPad. However, this has resulted in my iPad being loaded with extraneous photos (not included in the iPhoto Journal) wasting space on my iPad. I've posted a separate thread looking for a soution to that issue.

  • Photo app (Mac) doesn't sync with iCloud

    Hi All,
I have taken couple of pictures at home with my iphone which are in my iphone photo library and have by now also made it to the iCloud online.
However, when I start the photo app on my Mac (OS Yosemite) these photos are still not there. While I expect that they should be there instantly, they have had now couple of hours (within a wifi network) to be synced.
(Having a flawless synchronisation between apple devices was one of my key factors why I have bought an app. However, this hardly every works.)
Does anyone know how I can force the photo app only my Mac to refresh and thus get the latest pictures from iCloud?
I would much appreciate any help!
    Many thanks
    Alpha

Make sure you have ticked Numbers in System Preferences > iCloud.
You may need to sign out of iCloud and then back in again to "jumpstart " the syncing.

  • New photo app not downloading from iCloud

For some reason mid way through the month my photos in my photo stream stopped syncing to my Mac Book Pro since i installed the new photo app.  Anyone else have this problem?  Thanks!

Lots of issues about this one!  I have uploaded 227 a whole week.  Partly due to local broadband speeds and I suspect  pressure on servers in USA.  It sees the whole world is uploading at once - perhaps because Apple launched photos!
The advice I got from Apple was just to wait a couple of weeks for things to settle down.
Keep turning off the upload each day if it affects broadband speeds.
To address your specific question I thought mine had also stuck as nothing appeared to happen for days - then a few were uploaded.

  • Photos App Copying items to Photos Library regardless of checked option

I have been trying for hours to start my Photos App. It keeps saying via thermometer that it's either Preparing, Updating or Uploading, and this happens for hours with absolutely no progress on the "thermomether". I have been monitoring on Activity Monitor and there ARE packets going out.  My System Photo Library is about 1.5 Gb.  I have read on so many forums that a huge number of people are having this problem. So I gave up on updating the library as I have my photos in other database applications, except for a select few I use for various reasons.
I restarted photos while holding the Option Key and creating a new System Photo Library. I imported four test JPEG files and they did import properly into the App. However, even with all iCloud settings on, none of these photos made it to either my iPhone nor to the iCloud website. I then imported other test photos directly into my iCloud on a web browser. They immediately showed up and within moments were also available on my iPhone.
Furthermore, there is an option in Photos' Preferences that allows you to "copy items to the Photos Library".  Whether I have this checked or Not, Photos keeps importing the photos to the Library, as I can see the library's size increase with every photo imported. This is really baffling, and really disappointing that this application has so many bugs.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you'll be better off starting with a new library. There are two ways you could do that.
1 - create a new library and use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy the events and albums from the old library to the new one. That way you can keep keywords, comments, titles and albums.
2 - follow Tutorial #1 to write the keywords and comments to the original files of the old library and then create a new library and import those files into it.
After either method once you're satisfied that you have all your photos safely in the new library you can delete the old library and its source image files.
I recommend using the iPhoto Library Manager method. It would be easier but both will do the job.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • In new iOS 8 photos app, I am missing photos in photo view that are in album view

All my photos in the iPhoto app on my iMac appear correctly in the album view in the new Photos app on my iPhone 6.  However, not all the photos appear in the photos view.  To try and get the counts to match, in iTunes, I synced my iPhone after unchecking the syncing of photos.  I checked the Photos app on my iPhone and there were no photos.  Then I checked to sync all photos in iTunes and synced my iPhone again.  Every photo on my iMac was in the album view, but there were still missing photos in the photo view.
Anyone have this problem and a solution?

Thanks for your response.  Turns out the iPhotos database was corrupted.  I rebuilt it and now the counts match.
I do have summarize photos turned off as you suggested.
But now I have a new problem.  I have smart albums in iPhoto on my iMac that correspond to decades.  These albums and the photos they contain appear perfectly in the album view on my iPhone 6.  However, a few photos in the photos view appear with the wrong date.  So I'm working on resolving this.

  • Photos app on iPhone contains photos under Events which aren't in iPhoto on Mac

    Hi,
When I open the Photos app on my iPhone 4S there are a series of "Events" which contain photos. None of these events are listed within iPhoto on my Mac and I can't find where it is taking the photos from. All the events are just labelled with a date, for example "17 Dec 2012", but I am unable to delete the photos from my iPhone and because they are not showing up in iPhoto I can't delete them from there!!
    Any suggestions?!?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I figured it out if anyone else is having the same issue.  I had to manually kill the photo app and it updated the pictures I just added when I re-opened it.

  • Windows 8.1 Photos app doesn't display photos from Home Server V1 network drive

I have my photos stored on a Home Server V1 network drive (\\homeserver\photos) and I have added the drive to the Pictures library. When I open the library in desktop Explorer I can see all the photos
and my Photos live tile shows photos from the network drive. When I open the Photos app I can see all the folders. However, when I open a folder I get the message 'There are no files or folders in this view.'
    Any help is appreciated.
I am running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Adding another voice to this - I hit exactly the same issue myself yesterday.  I haven't got the device with me now, but as the original poster says:
I have \\server\photos mapped to my p:\ drive in Windows 8.1, and this is in my pictures library.
The p:\ drive has many (100s) subfolders, which I can browse using Windows explorer and desktop apps like Picasa.
When I start the "photos" app, I see all my folders (each with a thumbnail picture), but when I click into a folder I just get the "There are no files or folders in this view".
It's probably worth saying that as this is Home Server v1, I had a bit of fun and games to get permissions right to access the share:
I log into Windows 8.1 (on a Surface Pro 3) using my Microsoft account
I've mapped the home server photo drive to "P:\" on my SP3; when I did this I provided the admin user ID and password for the home server and told windows to remember the credentials.
I added p:\ to my pictures library in Windows 8.1 on the SP3.
FWIW - I use a similar mechanism to add music from my home server to my music library, but the XBox Music app seems to be able to see individual tracks OK.
    Any ideas?

  • Why Photos app uploads SO MANY photos to iCloud? Something's Wrong.

I have about 400 photos in My Photo Stream on my MAC, and my iPhoto library also had about the same number.
And it shows that in Photos app I have about 400 photos. But below that number, it says it's uploading more than 1000 photos to iCloud?? What is it uploading?? All my small bits of images files (not photos) that I have stored on my computer? Like graphic design related small icon images I have or something??? If not, why is it uploading so many??
    Please help asap.
    Thanks.

Well, I understand your frustration, but there is a much simpler way -- why not transfer the video from iPad to PC via the sync cable?  That is a whole lot easier and faster than using iCloud as an intermediary.  Besides, sending photos and videos to iCloud cuts their resolution down, so that's what will get downloaded to your PC.  If you go direct, you get the original resolution.  Part of the delay's you're seeing may also be due to the resolution conversion before uploading.
Also, have you checked your Wi-Fi speed?  Particularly the upload link, which is normally much slower than download speeds.
Also, when you create a Shared Photo Stream, you don't actually have to invite anybody, not even yourself.  Just set it up and start adding photos and video, and add people later if desired.

  • Direct upload from Photos app to Facebook & iOS Photos Album

When I use the Photos app to upload photos to Facebook, it places all of the pictures in an album called iOSPhotos.  There is no option to post them just to my normal Facebook Timeline. In other words, I'm forced to select an Album.
This is a problem because I get a huge mishmash of photos from different dates, times etc in this album called iOS Photos.  Instead of commenting on an individual upload, people end up commenting on the whole iOSPhotos album.  So you get a huge odd conversation appearing over time as more photos end up in there.
Apple, could you please allow us to upload a photo to the timeline, without forcing it into a specific album?  Or to allow us to create a new Album on the fly?

Once again, very aggressive and defensive response. Neither addresses the question nor aids in finding a workaround.
The Facebook api is open to all, and allows any album or the timeline to be specified. Many other apps and platforms manage that. So the Facebook end of this is available and ready to use.
It is an Apple choice to load to 1 specific album only, instead of offering the user a choice of album, or indeed the timeline. So the only part of this Facebook/Apple interface that needs a change to address this request is the Apple end.
My Android kit does this nicely enough, as does my Macbook Pro , its just my IOS devices that struggle.
It is Apple's absolute right to leave this as it is, presumably to nudge users further into the iCloud ecosystem, but it is a legitimate request and entirely within Apple's control to resolve.
