Does PRE10 64-bit REALLY make use of any extra RAM?

I am in the middle of a DVD Burn to Folder with Premier Elements 10 64-bit (installed on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit).  I have 5 gigs of RAM but according to Task Manager only 2.11 gigs total are in use.  Soooo....does the advertised benefit of being able to make use of more RAM really exist?  In theory it should, but I feel a bit duped by what I'm seeing.

After taking a closer look at all the Physical Memory items under the Performance tab in Task Manager as well as the Memory tab in Resource Monitor, I realized I didn't quite understand memory usage like I thought I did.  I did a bit of Internet searching on the subject and ran across http://brandonlive.com/2010/02/21/measuring-memory-usage-in-windows-7/ which did a good job of clearing things up.
While the Memory bar graph in Task Manager>Performance was showing only 2.11 gigs being used it showed nearly as much memory being Cached.  Apparently the two values have to be added in order to determine the total amount of data actually in RAM.  The cached data is information that is not currently being dealt with by the processor and held in RAM rather than being written to a page file on the hard drive.  Apparently all of my RAM (except for a few MB's) was in use after all.
I am working with VHS captured video that was captured in an H.264 format.  Since it is SD video I guess that would help to explain the lower amount of Physical Memory actually in use than what I expected.
Live and learn...
As far as the 5 GB of RAM...yeah it is a bit peculiar.  The computer is an older Dell XPS 600 with a Dual-Core 3GHz Pentium and an 800 MHz bus.  It originally had 4GB of RAM (Four 1GB sticks).  I came into posession of a 2GB stick of RAM and had to pull one of the existing 1GB sticks to use it.  So the three original 1GB sticks plus the "newer" 2GB stick gave me a total of 5GB's.

  • Does JCE 1.2.2 make use of a certificate with an expiration date?

Does JCE 1.2.2 make use of a certificate with an expiration
    date?
    If so, what's the date?

The validation code which checked for certificate expiration was only found in JCE 1.2.1. It WAS REMOVED from JCE 1.2.2 and all successive releases like JCE in JDK 1.4.x and 5.x (and soon in 6.x). This expiration problem was the primary reason for releasing JCE 1.2.2 over three years ago. Export control regulations changed following the release of JCE 1.2.1, and Sun released 1.2.2 shortly thereafter so that customers wouldn't have this expiration problem.
This change is documented as the first bullet in the change log for JCE 1.2.2, which is found both in the product distribution itself and on the following JCE product page:
    http://java.sun.com/products/jce/jce122_changes.html
That said, JCE 1.2.2 is indeed signed with a certificate which is valid until October 2006, HOWEVER the JCE 1.2.2 and JCE in JDK 1.4.x/5.x code no longer checks that expiration date. All it cares about is that the code signature is valid.
My understanding is that BOTH JDK 1.3.x and JCE 1.2.2 are slated for End-of-Life on March 30th, 2006, and will no longer be supported by Sun. Both should continue to work after that time, but will no longer be supported.
I hope that helps clear the confusion.

  • Can Illustrator really make use of 8GB RAM?

    Hello,
I'm thinking of upgrading my 17" 2010 Core i7 Macbook Pro from the curretn 4GB of RAM to 8GB or RAM as the prices have come down considerably. (around £40.00).
I've already posted a thread on a mac forum, but I thought that posting in on here would also be benificial.
Basically I would like to know is, is there any point doubling the RAM? Can Illustrator realy utilise 8GB of RAM? My files are becoming larger and so Illustrator runs slower - I've monitered this in Activity monitor and the pages in/out seem to have a 10% difference which is apparantley a indication of more RAM needed. I've also seen a few 'Not enough memory' messages in Illustrator.
    Thanks for your input.
    Nathan

Illustrator on the Mac is a 32Bit app currently. It can only utilize ~3GB of RAM. Hopefully, since Illustrator is one of the last remaining non-64Bit Adobe apps, that'll change in the near future. If you are buying for performance today.. it won't make any differnce. If you are buying for performance next year or 6 months from now, it may make a world of differnce.
You can still launch and use Illustrator on a 64bit system (I do every day) but it won't see any additional RAM. That does not mean more RAM isn't helpful. Illustrator can use it's ~3GB and the OS cna utilise the rest. This does make things faster even if Illustrator is still limited. In addition, I don't know any Mac users that use Illustrator and do not use Photoshop. Photoshop is a 64bit app and will use as much RAM as you feed it.

  • Logic doesen't make use of all my ram cap capacity

Why doesn't use logic 9 all of my ram memory?
For example i have the abbey road drums and that is generally knwon that it needs very much memory. But when i play it the memory load is only 1.5 GB. But i have 8 GB memory. Why it doesen't make use of all the memory?
And how is it in your set up?
    Thanks for reply.. regards..

Logic uses 1.5 GB because that is all it needs. RAM allocation in Logic is dynamic. It doesn't claim 8 GB when it only needs 1.5. Just create more tracks and load more AR drums, and no doubt you'll see the amount of RAM Logic uses, increase. Provided you are running it in 64 bit mode, of course. Otherwise (in 32 bit mode) it'll start whining ("my memory is getting low!") somewhere between 2 and 3 GB.

  • Does a QMaster Cluster really make sense for Final Cut Server?

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I often am, but my understanding of the difference between setting up a "Cluster" and just using "This Machine" is the cluster allows multiple jobs to be processed simultaneously, while an unmanaged system will only do one job at a time. However, when it does that one job, it uses all the system's processors.
Yesterday I created a cluster consisting of two Quad Core Intel systems, and started Final Cut Server cataloging about a half a TB of data. I noticed that Server submits the Proxy render jobs one at a time, and that the jobs were being submitted to only one processor core, in a rotating fashion. Is there a way to make FCServer submit jobs in "parallel," or am I better off with using just the local system for transcoding?

The default proxy transcode setting seems to be specifically tuned to work at a small scale, which makes sense if you are asking a box to host the database, serve the app, and do all the proxy transcodes. I observed the same phenomenon, so I made my own transcode setting for proxies and I chose to lower the bitrate a bit to help with file size and transfer time. The upside is the floodgates are wide open when my 32 core Xeon cluster (four 8-cores) goes to town on a proxy encoding job.
Your other observation is also right, that only one item is encoded at a time across the cluster rather than working on all of them at once across the cluster. So what you get with a fast cluster is shorter encode time, not parallel encodings that all finish at the same time.
If you have the spare machines to dedicate to cluster work, I strongly endorse setting up that way. I would not recommend Quick Clusters for Final Cut Server encoding duty. Either set up a dedicated Managed Cluster that FCSvr can use or none at all.

  • Does the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB really make a difference

I just bought 27inch late 2012 imac. 3.4ghz i7 32gb ram NVIDIA 680MX 2gb and Im currious does the 780M 4gb really make a difference. I do not play any games. I do have 2 27 lightening bolt displays. I do alot of video editing and photograph. I have all Adobe Products and Apple software but i cannot find any where that the GTX 780m with 4gb will be any better. All I can find is if you play games then 4gb is good.
    Any advice would be great!
    Thank you in advance,

Certain applications such as Photoshop or Final Cut Pro will benefit from the higher video ram, however the GTX 680M is a very powerful card and the 2GB of ram that it comes with should be more than sufficient for most tasks.
Only extremely large files/projects will truly benefit from having the 4GB or ram that the GTX 780M supplies.
The 2013 iMac offers a performance boost over the 2012 version, however the increases in terms of CPU/GPU power are mostly modest.
The Haswell architecture was designed with mobile use as the primary focus and so areas such as energy usage were the priority.
The Nvidia 7XX graphics cards run on the same Kepler architecture as the 6XX cards, as with the Intel CPU the improvements are there but there is not a huge leap forward.

  • How to make use of adjacent data elements within the same buffer

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to make use of adjacent data elements within the same buffer? To make my question clearly, I would like to give you an example. In my application, I set "sample to read" as 10 which means at each loop 10 data samples will be taken into a buffer. Now, what I would like to do is to do some calculations on adjacent data samples in same buffer. I tried to use "shift register" for this, but it seemed to me that it only can deal with the calculation between data from adjacent loops. In other words, it skips 9 data elements and take the 10th one for the calculation.
Here I also attach my VI showing what I did.
Thank you very much in advance,
                            Suksun

    Hi Suksun,
I hope you'll forgive me for distilling your code - mainly to understand it better.  I tried to duplicate your logic exactly - which required reversing the "derivatives"-array before concatination with the current samples array.  As in your code, the last velocity is being paired with the first position.  If first velocity is really supposed to be paired with first position, just remove the "Reverse 1D Array" node.
    cheers

  • Lightroom does NOT make use of new/fast hardwares!

For those who are considering a new computer here's my experience....
Lightroom 4 does NOT make full use of new/fast CPUs / SSDs!
I’ve been frustrated with Lightroom speed since launch and held on to my “old” Xeon work station for two years…. I recently invested in the latest Intel CPU and IO technology and I'm very disappointed how Lightroom 4 does not make use of it. It's most noticeably sluggish from one photo to the next during editing. This may seem small but when I edits hundreds of images everyday it really slow me down.
See my system specs at very bottom of this post. I don't think there's a bottle neck in performance! I love my new setup and it's a pleasure to use the OS. BUT I'm so disapointed everytime I load up Lightroom. (My typical Lightroom edits are 600-900 sRAW images - I edit down my photos in Photo Mechanic 5! It's just too slow in Lightroom)
Lightroom still take time to load each image when advance from one image to the next (During editing). Isn’t smart enough to cache 100 images in advance let say. (1:1 previews as been created!)
Won’t make use of more than 8GB ram. No matter how big the RAW working set is.
Very slow switching from one working module to another
Lightroom Jpeg export won’t make use of more than 25% of new Intel Xeon E5 series dual processors processing power 12 cores. 6-9 cores are literally taking a nap during export!
I’ve tried everything found in Adobe suggestion link below:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html
    * I definately tried 1:1 render preview and all of the other jazz found in link directly above!
    * Running all latest firmwares and updates
I hope the next version of Lightroom will actually make use of good hardware instead of adding on more features. We desperately need a snappy/responsive Lightroom for sake of productivity! I'm not here to put down Adobe. I'm a big fan of Adobe and Intel and have been using them for 15 years.
    My Setup:
    Dell Workstation T7600
    Dual Xeon E5-2630 2.5GHz (12 Cores Total)
    64GB 1600Mhz RAM
OCZ RevoDrive 3X2 - 1500MB/s (Boot / Camera Raw Cache)
4 Intel 520 Series SSD in RAID0 with dedicated 1GB Cache SAS/SATA PCIe 3.0 controller (Working RAW files)
Nvidia GTX680 - 4GB VRAM (I know this made for 3D but it has PCIe 3.0 connectivity - Quadro 4000 PCIe 2.0 wasn't any better)
    Drobo-S 2GBx5 (Strictly Storage)
Windows 7 Ultimate (Bare minimum! Just Adobe CS6 suite and Microsoft Office 2010)

In terms of workarounds for now, if you haven't tried the 4.2RC yet, you might find the module switching a bit faster.  And for better use of your exports processing power, try splitting your export into 3 or 4 and running them concurrently (i.e. set the first going, and immediately set the second going, etc.) as that'll make better use of the extra cores if your hard drives are able to keep up with them.

  • Does Premiere Pro CS4 really support Vista 64-bit?

I have installed Premiere Pro CS4 on my Vista 64-bit server and recognized in the task manager that Premiere is listed as a 32-bit application "Adobe Premiere Pro.exe *32" which makes me wonder if Adobe's statement given in the FAQ is correct, where they say "Adobe Premiere Pro is optimized to run on 64-bit systems. The key advantage of 64-bit systems is that they can use up to 64GB of RAM. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 can use large amounts of this memory because it splits different tasks into separate processes."
Am I executing the correct Premiere Pro EXE-file (the application itself works fine) and is that 32-bit application able to make use of the fully available RAM space (which is 8 GB on my system)?

Well great for you Harm, but this problem has me stumped.  I've been troubleshooting NLE systems since my Pinnacle DC30 Premiere 4.2 system.
I'm looking for a solution not to start a fight so if anyone has confronted similar problems and found a fix, please reply.
FYI, Adobe has made it clear that Premiere CS4 does not support daisy chaining decks or any other 1394 devices, but this is not my problem.
"Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 doesn't support multiple devices on a FireWire chain or multiple devices on a FireWire card."
Above quote copied from this Adobe support document http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405744.html
I'm not working with DV I have been shooting in 720P on a Sony PVW EX1 if that even matters.
Can you explain why my external array works well with XP fairly well with 32 bit Vista?  It's an ASUS P5E Deluxe motherboard.  This is not BS, I have a long list of Microsoft case numbers and it is REAL pain having to explain to someone in India the problem over and over again. I've been told by the array manufacturer SimpleTech ProDuo that it should work with the OS drivers.  The Internet forums for other 1394 devices have many instances of 64 bit Vista incompatibility. The same problems I'm having with the same OS just different devices.  What's really weird is how it will work fine like today, it's back to normal. I have had this system working perfectly then overnight the array vanishes in my computer but shows up in device manager with an error. Then a few hours later without changing anything, it starts working again, very intermittent.  As usual, it will fail when there's a deadline.
I've run Avast antivirus, Malwarebytes and Spybot.  Swapped cables, defragged drives, updated MB bios and software looked everywhere for solutions.
The MB Manual is found at http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
I can transfer content to my internal array but I'm trying to optimize a workflow that starts by shooting on SxS cards on the PVW EX1 and transferring them to the array in the field with the 32 bit Vista laptop and making rough cuts.  I keep the project files on a USB drive.  Then transfer the array and USB drive to the 9450 quad desktop system in the studio for final editing.  When I get this to work, it's a real time saver.  But transferring files to the internal array is possibly the only dependable solution for now.

  • Does upgrading your ram to 2GB really make a difference?

okay, so the obvious answer to the question is yes.
but when i mentioned i was thinking of doing this upgrade to a close friend (who did ICT A level) he seemed a little skeptical, and said that there are many other factors involved.
im currently on 768MB of RAM, and i run logic pretty much all the time. but recently, while my sounds are getting a little more complex, the system performance bar is reaching the top (it goes yellow rather than orange)
so to put my question more accurately...
will i see a difference with 2GB of ram within logic ?
and what else can i do to keep that system performance bar down (hard ware wise)

Increasing RAM will always be of benefit.
Another issue maybe how much disk space you have left on your hard drive?
That version eMac shipped with either a 40 or 80 GB drive. If there is 15% or less left on the drive, this maybe an additional reason why Logic is working harder.
Also, if you haven't done any disk maintenance in a while, like using Tech Tool Pro/Disk Warrior to clean up disk directories and defragment your hard disk, then that would tend to make Logic work harder because it has to constantly, in real time, find all of the audio data bits scattered all over your hard drive. Defragmenting a hard drive would put data that should be contiguous ( located together on the drive as one continuous data stream) back together.
You need a lots of free disk space when working with large audio/video files.
Purchasing a larger external Fire Wire drive would be a benefit.
I use Logic Express 8 on a 1.25 Ghz G4 MDD with 2 GB of RAM.
I do all of my recording to a external FW drive with plenty of free space.
Works fairly well on a 6+ year old Power PC Mac. Haven't had too many issues or dropouts.
This version of Logic on my Mac is not completely trouble-free, but performs well most of the times I have done lots of audio tracks and end up with, somewhat, large audio files.
My issues are always with adding effects after recording audio as these are very processor intensive and need not only a really fast CPU, but lots O' RAM, too!
I end up using many of the effects processes very sparingly and/or only on recorded tracks I feel really need to have them. Can't use as many effects or on too many tracks as this has given playback some hiccups and issues.
It's an issue I can live with until I can, finally, afford a speedier Mac. That's not in the near future for me, though.
I absolutely love Logic! Great Apple audio program!

  • The "edit in" does not launch if I make any develop changes.  I am using LR 5.6 and all of my plug ins are properly installed, up to date and were working just fine.  Edit in does work if I reset the image or load an unmodified DNG.

I am using LR5.6 on a Windows 7 machine with plenty of memory.  LR, CS5 and all of my plug ins have been working just fine.  Tonight I've found that if I make any kind of significant adjustments to an image, and the go to "Edit in.." that function does not launch.  I can use the Edit in command on an unmodified image, or if I reset the modified image.  I have the issue with all of my plug ins, including Photoshop, all of the Nik software, RadLab, and OnOne.  I believe that all of the plug ins are current.  I've been working with them yesterday and I had no issue.  I cannot recall anything that has changed since then, and I have not installed any software.  I'm at a loss!!  Please help!

I have traced the problem to a corrupted profile.  When I captured the images in question, I also used Color Cherckr to create a profile for processing.  When I apply that profile to the adjustments I make, I can no longer "Edit In".  If I use another profile, even one that I created using Color Checkr at a different point in time, I don't have the issue.  Something seems to have corrupted the new profile.  I will re-create the profile and see if the issue is resolved.

  • What versions of Xerces-J and Xalan-J does JDK 1.5 make use of

Can any one tell me what versions of Xerces-J and Xalan-J does JDK 1.5 make use of.

    Hi all,
    I have a class which has a Vector<Vector> data
    member.
I expect its collection to contain more collections
hence the Vector<Vector> type.Everything is OK with your concept, except that you just declared a variable of type "Vector of Vectors". Instead, you need to declare it as "Vector of Vector of Objects":
private Vector<Vector<Object>> coll;and initialize it with
    coll= new Vector<Vector<Object>>();

I was trying to update my iOS to 7.1 but I can't, I have internet connection but if requires WiFi? before I can update my OS just using my phone internet but now I can't. Does OS 7.1 really require WiFi? Thanks!

The iPhone requires wi-fi to update if you try to update over the air, since the phone needs to reboot, thus disconnecting itself. You can update via iTunes and the computer, but you would not be able to tether to the phone for the internet connection, since the phone would disconnect. So, you can either update via wi-fi and the phone, or you can update with a computer that has an internet connection other than the phone.
