Does PS CS6 take better advantage of multiple processors than PS CS5?

Hi,
According to the article on this Adobe Support page, it says: There is a law of diminishing returns with multiple processors- The more processors you use, the less you get from each additional processor. Therefore, Photoshop isn't necessarily four times as fast if you have four microprocessors.
My question is, is this part of PS improved in this new version? If anyone knows about this, your response would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

Good question.  This was with a simple Image size (from 25,000 pixels square to 15,000 pixels square)
Six cores, but only only six threads, maxing out at about 70%.  I helped itself to lots of RAM though.

Mac OSX Lion: Why does PS CS6 BETA stop responding after attempting to import single pdf or multiple pdfs? frequently happens(2/3 times)

Can you provide any more information about the files that are causing the problems? Are these particularly large files? Many pages or images? Have you opened these files in Photoshop CS5, or other versions of Photoshop?
What do you see when you try to import these PDFs? Do you get the PDF Import dialog, allowing you to select pages or images from the PDF? Is so, is it hanging when you click OK or at another time?
Any more details about the problem or other info (as well as sample files) you can provide, the easier it will be for us to help identify the cause of your problems.

  • Will the T4i help me take better sports photos then the PS SX40 HS??

I currently have a PowerShot SX40 HS and I want to upgrade to be able to take better sports shots and actually freeze the action.  The sports include Baseball / Football and some indoor Basketball.  This is the main reason I want to upgrade (For action shots)!!  I am currently looking at the Canon T4i and a couple IS lenses (18-55 & 55-250) both IS II.  The lenses come with the camera.  Would I be able to freeze the action better with the T4i?   I don't want to spend the money if is not going to do what I want.  Not looking for SI quality shots but just some I can say "Check that out".  Would an STM lens be much better?  I think an STM lens is better for video.  Not really looking to shoot video - mainly stills.  Well Action shots!!  I did play around with all of the features on my SX40 so I am somewhat familiar with ISO / Aperature and F-stop.  Any suggestions on a I dare say to say "Entry Level DSLR" for my needs.  My maz spending is 1k.  Would a 250mm bring it up close if I am sitting in the stands?
Thank you all for your time.
    Briguy

Better, yes.  But better enough to warrant the cost, that I can't answer.
Keep in mind that what you are asking for (freezing action and getting it up close from the stands) is a lot.  Arguably too much.  But that depends on your definition of acceptable.  In order for me to get a shot that I consider great, from the stands, would require a very, very expensive lens.  But if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from being a photographer – the average person doesn’t look at a photo the same way a photographer does.
Lets deal with the easy stuff first: a dSLR is much faster than a point and shoot.  Modern P&S have gotten much faster, some are quite fast, but their autofocus is still slow, and there’s no point in having 10 pics of an out of focus subject.  dSLR can take multiple shots a second, and they can even re-focus in-between shots.  Additionally, the shutter lag – time between pushing the button and the shutter dropping, is quicker (though some P&S have gotten really fast).  All these advantages make dSLRs much better equipped for sports.
Freezing action requires a fast shutter speed.  Easy for just about any camera in good light, but as light fades you’ll start to see the difference between P&S and dSLR.  The sensor in a dSLR is much bigger than most P&S, so it can collect more light, which means it can use a faster shutter speed (in a sense).  But this can only take you so far, to really reap the benefits of a dSLR you need good lenses.  More specifically, you need lenses with a wide aperture to let in a lot of light.  Again, outside in the sun it’s not such an issue, but freezing action of indoor sports is pushing the limits, and it really can’t be done well (subjective) without a good lens and preferably a good camera.  Will a Rebel with a 55-250 kit lens perform better than a P&S with indoor sports?  Yes.  Will it provide acceptable results for you?  I can’t answer that.  I will say that getting a Rebel with the two kit lenses is a big step up and I think you could have a lot of fun, and learn a lot about photography with that setup.
One last comment:  you’re correct, STM is primarily for video.  I would try to find a refurbished version of the previous version of the 55-250 and save a bit of cash.

  • Does Photoshop CS6 support Nikon D810 raw files?

Does Photoshop CS6 support Nikon D810 raw files? Photoshop won't allow me to open the raw files and Bridge won't display the files either. I tried to download the camera raw plug-in 8.6 but read somewhere that Photoshop CS6 doesn't support it? HELP!!!

It should. The D810 had support since version 8.6. (A relative newcomer.) Did you use Help > Updates on the menu bar?
Take note that the updates for Camera Raw in CS6 only supports updates for cameras and nothing more. You won't get any of the new features inherent in the versions for Photoshop CC (like the filter brush in the Graduated Filter).

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.

  • Question from PSE user: does Lightroom offer a better tagging workflow than Elements?

I would just like to piggyback onto this question, rather than start a new thread.
I have been a user of Elements since before it was called Elements. But I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the product over the last couple years as it has not improved any in its organizational features.
My primary usage is for organizing. I tag all my photos so that I can search and find things easily. I have 2 main problems with the Elements workflow. #1 is simply that the application takes a long time to launch and become responsive. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds before any of the UI will respond to clicks. Yes, I have a lot of photos, (~20,000) But I don't know if Lightroom may be more powerful or more efficient in that regard.
#2 is the primary problem. Tagging takes forever. I have so many tags that there is a long list that runs off the screen. If I am tagging a series of shots that have different combinations of people in them, and those tags are spread out in my list, it takes forever to tag, select, tag more, scroll around to select and unselect tags, tag some more, repeat the process. It's excruciating. I've left feedback for Adobe several times through the years that they should add a recently used tags window where recently used tags will float to the top so that they are always available without having to scroll around to get to them. But they have not improved the tagging workflow one bit over the years.
So the question boils down to, does Lightroom do a better job in the tagging workflow? Is what I described easier in LR? I'm sure that I will download a trial to check it out, but i just wanted to know if an experienced user has thoughts on that.
    Thanks

I don't have a weak machine, I'm running with 8GB of RAM and an SSD for my applications drive, although the catalog is on a regular hard drive that I use as the data drive.
This is most likely irrelevant to your Elements speed issues. Repairing or optimizing the catalog file may help
I'm not sure how a hierarchy will help with the tags, as I already have them arranged in groups of family and groups of friends. The problem is that you get events with a lot of people from different groups and there's no way to avoid having to hunt all up and down the list. You can't really predict what grouping of people will apply. That's why I've really been hoping for a recently used tag list...that would be sooo perfect.
Yes, but the ability to search for keywords and type a few letters in and see related keywords will help.
So if you have just tagged a photo with the Anderson Jones keyword (because someone in the photo was named Anderson Jones), and now you need to also tag the same photo with the William Barber keyword (because someone in the photo was named William Barber), you don't really need to scroll, you just need to type in a few letters of William and then select the proper keyword from a much shorter list.

  • How long does it usually take to get added raw support (nex5n)?  i pretty much just use aperture 3 and love it but why does lightroom from adobe seem to get raw support faster than Apple's Aperture 3.  Also FCPX lacks v Adobe on 60p.

How long does it usually take to get raw support for Aperture 3?  Is it slowed by Apple or camera company.  I only ask because Lightroom has support for nex5n raw but Aperture 3 does not.  Also direct import into Adobe premiere  and ability to edit in 60p.  However, support for 60 p not as easily worked with in FCPX.  I am just surprised Apple does not keep pace with these type of updates that Adobe does.  Don't get me wrong I love and use Apple software  when I can but I wish Apple was ahead of adobe in getting this support.  I guess more of a vent than a question.

    Yes, more of a vent.
    FWIW I agree.
Camera companies keep RAW specs confidential so firms like Apple and Adobe have to (sort of) reverse-engineer to develop RAW converters for each new camera. The good news is to my eyes/brain Apple usually does a slightly better job at it than Adobe does. The best RAW conversions (logically) come from the camera manufacturers.
Apple gives up market share with slow support for new cameras. IMO really DUMB. It has at least been improving...

  • HT4623 How long does ios 7 take time to download ?

How long does ios 7 take time to download???
For my ipad mini it says 28 hours and my iPhone 4S it says 68 hours!!!
    Why???

    Diavonex:
My apologies.  I meant to say iOS 7.02, but I guess my wishful thinking for 7.03 being out there got in the way.
BTW, it took me the better part of 1/2 hour to install 7.02 over top of my existing 7.0 iPad 3rd-gen installation.
Some suggestions (if not outright hints and tips) for everyone when you upgrade your iPads:
Make sure you keep at least about 1-2 GBs of free space on your iPad AFTER installing iOS 7 or later, otherwise you may risk seeing your performance suffer big-time.
I like filling my 64 GB iPad bucket with apps, and shortly after I finished downloading a couple of really HUGE games to fill that remaining 3.5 GBs of space that I had after upgrading from iOS 6 to iOS 7 (notably, Asphalt 8, Megapolis HD, etc), things REALLY started to slow down, and, most importantly, SCREW up, leading to crashes if I opened apps, crashes and restarts just updating apps, even crashes if I swiped to unlock and change a few basic settings
Hoping some of these performance issues will be addressed in a future iOS 7.1 upgrade, or, at least, we see recognition and guidelines of where this water line should be from Apple.  My guess is, if they do this, they will get about one gazillion articles from the Apple journo community, not to mention a boatload of complaints.
My gut instinct is saying at least about 1-2 GBs is where this presumably critical operational waterline is, but depending on your iPad, your mileage may vary, so this is just a heads-up and to keep an eye on your usage and storage stats if you see your performance take a hit without warning.
My current solution: Start deleting apps until you get back to that 1-2 GB free zone level.  I didn't even need to restart to see my performance improve to something approaching enjoyable, if not tolerable.

  • How long does file conversion take to complete?

Well, I've tried saving my ditamap as a pdf and as a composite framemaker doc. So far, neither conversion has worked because it's taken over 2 hours and never completed the process.
Any ideas? Does the ditamap work better in FM if it's created in FM? I created my using XMLMind.
    Thanks for any tips.

    Hi Lucy...
For a large map, this can take many hours (depending on the speed of your system). This is especially the case if your files make heavy use of xrefs and conrefs or you've got a large relationship table. No, it doesn't matter that the files were authored in another XML editor, as long as they are valid DITA. You should start with a smaller set of files to test things before jumping in with a big map.
FYI .. the book-building process in DITA-FMx is significantly faster than that in default FM8 or FM9. It also provides many book-building features that aren't available in default FM, like ..
    - automatic TOC and Index generation
    - the ability to apply separate templates to different map element types (chapter, part, appendix, etc)
    - automatically apply pagination and numbering
    - lots more

  • Where does the processing take place when using a remote front panel?

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading my LabView software from 6i to 6.1 for the new "two click" remote front panel feature. I have already seen a demo of this feature but have just a few questions before I get the upgrade:
My setup consists of several pieces of equipment connected to Labview via GPIB, to aid in the evaluation of a new microchip.
    1. I wish to grant control of the setup to anyone with a web browser, Is the remote monitoring feature compatible with both Netscape and IE?
    2. The VI which controls the setup is currently located on the PC beside my setup. When I embed a VI in a remote front panel, where does the processing take place, is the local VI still controlling the setup? and
the remote panel just sending and receiving data from the local VI.
    Thanks, Troy

The computer which we refer to as the server, the one with the GPIB card
in your case, will execute as it does now. In fact, its window will
even be open. The remote client computer, the one with the web browser
will be running the runtime engine and processing user events, value
change and property/method events from the server. So in reality, both
computers will be sharing the load a bit. This allows for very small
packets to be sent between the computers. It is in fact quite similar
to publishing the data between the computers using datasocket.
One thing to keep in mind. Standard LV includes a license for one
connection. If you want to allow for multiple web browsers to view at
the same time, additional licenses are available. Also, only one user,
remote or server may be in control of the panel at a time. That means
that if you want to be able to operate the panel, changing kn
    obs or
flipping switches, the others will become viewers only until you give up
control. Hopefully this isn't a surprise, but I thought you might want
    to hear about it now.

why does my newsstand take up two spots?

well, i found out why, and here it is...
there was an invisible folder entitled "volumes" which contained 300 gb worth of unsuccessful time machine transfers. i would not have been able to ever find it or know of it's existence (since it never returned any search results) had it not been for some innocuous little microsoft word virus. how do i take one layer with multiple selections and make those selections their own layer?

Yes sir. It w was really hard to explain. It is discontiguous segments that are separated by transparent areas. And I want those non transparent areas to be on their own layer. I have a photo shop file that has a bunch of buttons on them and they are on a transparent background. It is one layer. I want to select all the buttons and put them on their own layers. I can do this manually by selecting a button and cmd Just to a new layer, but when I have 200 buttons it is a daunting task.
