Does re-installing FireFox remove my Bookmarks?

Does re-installing FireFox remove my Bookmarks? Thank you.

No, uninstalling or reinstalling Firefox does not remove you bookmarks or settings, unless you take extra steps to remove them yourself. For more details, see these pages:

  • A system recovery was performed on my pc. When I re-installed firefox all my bookmarks had disappeared. This happened more than a wk ago so the solution of recovery for 5 days didn't work. Is there any way to recover them from more than 7 days ago?

On Jun 19 my pc wouldn't load Windows & HP decided to do a system recovery on my pc on Jun 20.
Prior to the system recovery being performed all of my files & programs were burned onto discs.
A few days after the recovery was performed I re-installed Firefox. It was the same day that the newest version of Firefox was released. I was unable to reload the version I was previously using (I believe that it was version 4).
After re-installing Firefox I discovered that I lost all of my Firefox bookmarks.
I thought that the bookmarks would be on the back-up discs but I can't find them on the system recovery files that I loaded onto my pc.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a HP G60 series laptop.

    Thanks for the info.
I did find the folder as described above. Under Profiles the sub-directory I found was: t6jyvmtf.default
There are 2 files in that sub-directory:
blocklist - which is an XML document &
bookmarks - which is Firefox document
When I selected bookmarks the document that opened does not contain (to my knowledge) the bookmarks.
The heading for the page is '''''Bookmarks''''' & right underneath that heading is '''Get Bookmark Add-ons'''
Underneath that is a heading '''Bookmarks Toolbar Folder''' with the following under it:
Add bookmarks to this folder to see them displayed on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Getting Started & Latest Headlines
That is followed by the heading '''Mozilla Firefox''' which has the following underneath it:
Help and Tutorials, Customize Firefox, Get Involved & About Us
I checked each of the items that could be selected but none of them had my bookmarks.
I also checked the blocklist XML document - it opened Windows Internet Explorer with what appears to be programming language (although I could be wrong). At the top of the document it says - ?xml version="1.0" ?
    followed by
    - <blocklist xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/addons-blocklist">
Should I be selecting one of the above to find the bookmarks & I'm just not seeing it?

  • I've installed firefox and the bookmarks doesn't work

I've installed, un-installed, and re-installed firefox. Bookmarks will not work. I've clicked the star - and nothing. I've tried to use the menu bar to bookmark a page and - nothing. I've checked the sqllite file and it is not marked as read only.
What else can i do to be able to get bookmarks working?

Thanks CoryMH - but that isn't the problem either. Nothing in bookmarks is working - I can't import, I can't create new bookmarks. When I open "show all bookmarks", nothing is there - nothing is in the unsorted file either.
They just completely don't work - neither importing, nor creating new.

  • How does one install Firefox on Windows 7 for just one user, so separate users can have completely independent Firefox installations?

I'd like to create a new user, and install firefox for that user completely separate in all respects from the existing user's installation, so that there is no interaction at all between the two installations, with separate copies of the program files as well as separate Firefox profiles.

I was asking about how to have multiple Windows user accounts, and how to install Firefox independently for different Windows user accounts.
Firefox does not ask if you want to install it for everyone or just the current user, unlike many programs.
I tried switching to the newly created Windows user account, which was able to use the Firefox installed by the other user account, and installing Firefox, and although there's no indication that it's installing a user specific copy of Firefox, it is. Now the original user account sees it's installation of Firefox and the second user account sees it's installation of Firefox and no longer runs the first users installation of Firefox.
Creating separate Firefox profiles is what I was trying to say I didn't want to do. That's why I mentioned wanting completely separate copies of the program files, not one copy of the program files running two instances simultaneously.

  • My hardrive is going out.I will have to re-install firefox will my bookmarks still be there?

I want toa know if I will lose my firefox bookmarks if my computer crashes and I fix it and re-install firefox. If I will, how di I back that information up?

You need to backup either just your bookmarks or the profile folder to external media such as a USB flash drive if you want to save more than the bookmarks.

  • Firefox crashes for unknown reason lately, so I removed it and reinstalled it. How can I put my Favorites (bookmarks) back into the newly installed FireFox???

Firefox crashes a few times when I was on Facebook and with email, also watching dramas online. Most of the time due to Adobe Flash and I did submit crash report. Later it crashes for unknown reason while I have email and Facebook on different tabs -- when I was on the tab of email, it looks system hang and not responding. This happened to my laptop that uses Windows Vista as I noticed. I don't remember it ever happens to my desktop that uses Windows XP.
It's pretty annoying of such known crash, but before removing Firefox, I did try to update all add-ons or plugins and it looks like doesn't work out. After updating for couple times and it still crashed like that, I removed Firefox and reinstall it.
'''Now I want to know how to put the shortcuts from my Favorite folder into the newly installed FireFox's bookmarks.''' I didn't backup the bookmarks by using Firefox. I even went to Firefox help for instructions, but it only mentions how to merge/input the bookmarks from other browsers. Please note the version I've removed and inrestalled is the same -- 3.6.13.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Just installed Firefox 3.6. Firefox will not start and Firefox safemode does not start either. Using Task manager I do not see if started either. If I create a new profile and start from that window, Firefox starts up. I see no error windows/messages. I do have it listed in my Firewall as an exception program with Permit All. • I HAVE FF 3.6.21 DOES FF4 INSTALL OVER IT AND IMPORT ALL SETTINGS, BOOKMARKS, ETC AND CAN I GO BACK TO 3.6.21 IF I DON'T LIKE 4

I HAVE FF 3.6.21 Is FF4 a completely new install or does it install over the existing installation. Does it import settings, bookmarks, stored passwords, etc or do I have to add all that. Lastly, if I don't like FF4 can I go back to FF3 easily

Firefox 4 is no longer available. If upgrading, the only version that you can/should go to is Firefox 6.0.1, the current version. Firefox 7.0 is scheduled to be released on 09-27-2011 ('''''scheduled date is subject to change'''''). After Firefox 4.0, each upgrade replaces the prior version and the prior version is "abandoned" as far as security and stability updates are concerned.
Installing Firefox 6 will preserve your prior bookmarks, passwords, etc. You can/should make a backup of your personal information for safekeeping; what if you have a hard drive failure?
*See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information] '''''and''''' [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup Profile backup]
To test the new version 6.0.1 and leave your current Firefox 3.6.21 intact, you can install Firefox Portable. Firefox Portable is not produced by Mozilla (but is based on Firefox released versions) and is not supported on this site -- has its own support forum (see below). Firefox Portable installs in a separate folder on your hard drive and keeps its profile (personal information) separate so that it does not interfere with your current Firefox installation settings or personal information (bookmarks, passwords, etc.). You can also install Firefox Portable on a USB/thumb/pin/jump drive.

  • I need to update Firefox, but it keeps saying that Firefox needs to be closed first (even though all windows are closed). I cannot install or remove Firefox files due to this problem.

Firefox was unable to open google, and I saw there was an update for that problem, but I am unable to install the update (or any update for that matter) as well as removing Firefox. Every time I try to do so, I get a message that I must close Firefox first (even though there are no windows open). I checked applications to be sure, and it does not appear Firefox is running when this happens.

Hi kshikuma. This happens to me sometimes, as well.
To solve this issue, open the Windows Task Manager by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Go to the "Processes" tab and see if a process named "firefox.exe" or "plugin-container.exe" is opened. Close any and all such processes by right-clicking them and selecting "End Process".

  • I am not very tech savvy, installed Firefox and it w0n't communicate with my email (incredimail). also is there a way to transfer my favorites/bookmarks over from IE to firefox? Those two things would be a great start!

I am not very tech savvy, installed Firefox and it won't communicate with my Incredimail. If I click on a link in my email it does nothing. ie: if i click on the pay now button on ebay or paypal it goes nowhere. also is there a way to transfer all my favorites/bookmarks from IE to firefox. I've heard Firefox is so much better than IE but I am getting frustrated (probably out of my own ignorance of the program) and ready to go back to IE. Please help! Thanks. Jeanne

I cannot help with Incredimail, but I do know how to transfer bookmarks.
One can use File > Import from the menu or export favourites from IE as .html and then import the file into Firefox from the "Show all bookmarks" window. To get the menu to show up, press Alt. Firefox should have offerecd to import several items from IE when you first set it up. Did it not do that?

  • I have recently installed Firefox 4.0 but would like to go back to 3.6. Can I do this without loosing all of my addons and bookmarks?

I have some favorite add-ons that are not yet compatible with version 4. I would like to go back to 3.6 without loosing all of my setup.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6.* you can uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install Firefox 3.6.* available from http://www.mozilla.com - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

  • Firefox 35.0.1 does not install, despite repeated attempts in OS X Yosemite.

Running Yosemite 10.10.2 on a Macbook Air, have downloaded and installed Firefox 35.0.1 several times. Software says installation was successful each time, but it does not seem to register, and I keep getting prompts to install it.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop
    *Firefox 35.0.1: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
*Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox.
