Does re-saving mp3 files result in audio degradation?

Any Audio Gurus out there?
Does opening an mp3 audio file, editing it, then re-saving,
compress it more, resulting in additional audio degradation?
It is my understanding that opening jpeg files, editing them,
and then saving them results in additional image degradation.
Do mp3 files react the same way as jpeg files (each time you
save them they degrade more)?

Hey All,
Thanks for looking into this. The good news is I have answered my own question. The bad news is the answer is "HAD TO WAIT FOR 7.3!!!!!"
Yes QuickTime has solved this bug with the newest version. Also if anyone has created QuickTime files in h.264 (using QuickTime 7.2) and needed to re-save for any reason, you can now re-save these files again in 7.3 and the browser player's audio level will default to the highest setting as it should.
Again thank you to everyone who spent anytime searching an answer to this bug.

  • ITunes 10.2.1 does not decode mp3 files properly

    Hello,
I have recently posted the results of my MP3 decoder test, covering iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player and Foobar2000:
    http://blog.szynalski.com/2011/03/16/itunes-10-2-1-fails-to-decode-mp3-files-pro perly/
The result is that iTunes 10.2.1 (Windows) fails to decode mp3 files properly. Its output does not match the other tested players, nor does it match the Fraunhofer decoder in Cool Edit Pro. I have not tested the Mac version.
The distortion is mostly above 16 kHz.
I am posting this here in the hopes that someone from Apple will take notice.

I solved my problem I tried several other programs to play my music and since nothing seemed to work, i started deleting other software from my computer and apparently Uniblue's RegistryBooster was the one that caused the problem. Now able to enjoy music from my computer again

  • Saving MP3 files in a different format

I currently have an extensive MP3 library already tagged and named to avoid doubles. I wish to import this library into Itunes but had noticed with a test import of a few hundred it is renaming them.
Is there any way to change Itunes so that when it renames the mp3 file name it will be the format of <artist> - <song> instead of just <song>?
Also is there a way to change the folder it is saving to also? The format I would prefer is <Artist 1st Letter>\<Artist> or just <artist> instead of <Artist>\<Album>.
    Thanks for the help

    No and no.
You can turn off "keep my music folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes library". Then it won't touch your songs names or locations or what have you.

  • Does iTunes duplicate mp3 files I import, thus doubling space used on mac?

    Hello.
May be a silly question, but here goes:
When I import mp3's onto my mac (from my old computer), i put them all into one folder..
when i double click to play, they automatically play through itunes.. now i've noticed that itunes NOW ALSO creates a duplicate folder/file of those tunes that I have now played through iTunes, (in "user" > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music)...
does this mean that there are now 2 copies of the mp3 on my hardrive, therefore taking up space?? I'm not entirely sure - but would not be happy if every song actually takes up twice the amount of space...
    Any help??
    Thanks everyone!
    Johnny

I'm having a similar problem. Just installed iTunes, first iPod product, and my file usage has dwindled by the size of the music files. They've all been doubled, it looks like. Where is this located, and how can I be sure not to move/delete the wrong ones?
Or, where is the setting to stop this, and if I change the setting do I need to re-install iTunes to get rid of the wasted file space?
    Thanks.

  • Using f4vpp.exe with MP4 file results no audio

    Hello,
I'm recording MP4 webcam videos using Flash 11.1.102.63 and publishing them on my FMS 3.5.6.  When playing back MP4 files using my Flash player, both video and audio works perfectly.
However, I also need to make my MP4 files play on other players (like Windows Media Player).  As I found out quickly, the MP4 file encoded by FMS is not playable without conversion.  After some googling, I found that the post processor tool f4vpp.exe allows to flatten the MP4 file so that it plays with Media Player.
The problem is that F4VPP seems to remove the audio part in the file.  My MP4 file consists of H264 video and NellyMooser audio (which is the default audio recording codec with Flash).  I also tried using Speex codec for audio but still no sound after using F4VPP.
I've seen some comments around about this bug.  Unfortunately, the download page (http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-server-family/tool-downloads.html) refers to the tool as dated of June 2009.  Is there an updated version with a fix?
Otherwise, I'm trying to reproduce the work done by the tool using ffmpeg.exe.  So far, the closes I have been able to do is this:
    ffmpeg.exe -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -ar 44100 -async 1 -sameq output.mp3
The problem is that the video encoding seems loosing something, as the output video has blocky/pixelated parts in the video that seems random.  Probably related to something in the conversion, but I can't figure out what.
Can anyone point me to a solution?
    Thanks.

I have the same issue!! Adobe, help!

  • Copying/Burning mp3 files to CD (80 minutes)

I've been trying to copy an .mp3 file that is exactly 79 mins and 58 secs long to CD (2 secs shy of 80 mins). Every time I try I receive an error stating the destination disc will not fit onto the 80 minute CD-R. Is there a reason for this and if so is there a way around it?

Ok... First I tried to use the .mp3 file to burn it within iTunes. Then it said it couldn't burn the play list which got me thinking iTunes was interpreting the entire play list. So I moved the individual .mp3 file to a new playlist and tried. Still iTunes wouldn't allow the .mp3 to be burned onto the audio CD and asked me if I wanted to span the discs. So I created another play list which contained the smaller version of the converted .mp3 -> .wav file. It worked flawlessly and in 2 mins the entire CD was complete.
So there must be something to do with the size of the file(s) as well as the amount of time of the files for Audio CDs.
You maybe right about it shortening the file during the conversion but I tried twice and came out with the same exact amount of time for the .wav files. This leads me to believe both the size of the file and the amount of time (at least within iTunes) must be the issue.
I also (previously) attempted to burn it using Roxio's Toast but had no success burning the large .mp3 file to an audio CD that way either.
iTunes did give me the option to split the file between multiple discs but this is not the result I was looking for...
Either way.. The .wav file is now on an audio CD and I played the entire disc and it worked fine. I didn't even notice a difference in the sound quality between the lower 32 khz sample rate and the discarded 44Khz sample rate. Both the .mp3 and .wav sounded near the same - I did leave it at 16 bit stereo though.
So, problem solved for now I guess. Now, I need to burn the 2nd disc which shouldn't be a problem as the files do not span the total amount of time or file size of a standard 80min/700mb CD.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. In an .mp3 file the data is compressed; with the .wav file the data is not compressed and is purely raw data. So turning .mp3 files into an audio CD does not necessarily mean it will fit on a standard CD even if the time allotment states it will fit via .mp3 files.
I never ran into this issue before but it's kind of interesting how it all worked out.

  • Converting mp3 file to AIFF

Hi, I'm making my way through a how to book called "Logic Pro 7 and Logic Pro Express 7," right now. I'm at a stage in Lesson 4 where I'm supposed to add an mp3 file to the Audio Window for a song that I'm working on. I dragged three AAIF files in and there was no issue. But I keep trying to add an mp3 file to the Audio window. I select "add audio file" and then I get to the "open file" window. When I add the mp3 file, it appears in the box, but above it, it says, "no audio file selected." When I hit "done", I get 3 rejection windows. The first two say, "could not create file." Then the third says, "Beat mp3 file, what kind of file is this?" In the book, it says that the mp3 should automatically convert to AAIF, but this isn't happening. Is there anything that I'm clearly not doing?? Thanks

I had exactly this problem some time ago - the command to import mp3 is messed up so if you try and add a file from the Audio menu you will get what you describe.
However you dont even need to use Waveburn - instead adjust Logic's window so you can see a bit of your Desk Top .. then open the directory where your MP3 file is stored that you want to bring into Logic - and just drag it Window to Window .. from the desk top straight into Logic's Audio Window next to the other audio files

  • Converting mp3 file to podcast

Is there any way of taking an arbitrary mp3 file (or other audio format) and getting iTunes and iPod to see it as a podcast?
I have mp3 files of lectures that I would like to access as podcasts, although they were not access via podcast feeds.

I have a similar need, and I'd appreciate some additional information -- especially regarding how to "host" my own podcast. In my case (very much like the original post), I have a series of MP3 files that are lectores (sermons, actually). So far, I've put them on my iPod by just adding them to my Music Library. But they're difficult to find, and I'd like the additional advantages of making them "podcasts".
Can anyone provide more detail -- either on simple tools to use (for the XML, or the personal web hosting that was mentioned), or a step-by-step procedure to just take my own MP3s, and make them truly podcasts, so that I can get them not only into iTunes, but onto my iPod, as well?

  • Burn voice mp3 play list to audio CD. convert bit rate or sample rate.

I have several audio files (voice), 30 in all, that I wish to play in a car CD player.
The car player cannot play mp3. Using iTunes I tried buring a play list of mp3 files to an Audio CD.
I get an alert from iTunes that I may require multiple CD's. Each mp3 file is around 90megs in size or about an hours worth of audio (voice).
The audio files are voice no music. But they are at 192 kbps bit rate and 44 khz sample rate.
Is there a way of converting them to squeeze more files onto a CD? Changing bit rate or sample rate?
Can itunes do that? Or is there a utility that can do that?
    thanks

Now that memory serves me right. CDs have the MB size and the Minute size on them. example 700MB/80Minutes.
    How we forget...
    Thanks though
