Does reinstalling OS X  Moutain Lion from the recovery disc erase anything else on the Macintosh HD?

I am having trouble playing QT movies since I installed QT 7 Pro. I wanted to see if I could reinstall 10.8 from the recovery disc to gain back any missing codecs> I don't see any ionformation on downloading QT codecs for QT Pro 7. Any help?

When you restart into the Recovery HD and choose to Reinstall OS X, you're ONLY installing OS X on top of itself and NOT touching any 3rd party apps or data files. Of course, always do a back up prior to a reinstall for safety sake.

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Creating my own Fusion Drive: Do I need to buy Mountain Lion from the app store to reinstall the OS? Do I lose the iLife apps?

I just bought a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a 1TB HDD and I'm planning to install a second drive, an SSD (Samsung 840 evo) and create the Fusion Drive, and I have a couple of questions:
1- I've read lots of articles on how to do this but I'm not sure if I have to buy Mountain Lion from the app store (to reinstall the OS after I install the second drive) since I'm not able to see it on the "Purchased" list of apps, or if I can just reinstall OS X with OS X Utilities.
2- I read somewhere that if I make my own Fusion Drive when I reinstall OS X I will lose iLife, is this true? Or will I be able to redownload it from the store? I really don't want to lose iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand and I'm confused about it.
Thanks in advance for any help and information you can give me!

Thankyou very much lllaass, that's exactly what I wanted to be sure about!

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

  • I reinstalled tiger on one iMac, but want to re-upgragde it to Lion.  I don't have the discs anymore, but I installed Lion from the Mac App Store.  Now that I'm back to 10.4, I don't have the App Store.  I have a new iMac with Mavericks, but it won't let

I have a 2006 iMac that I've upgraded to each new os as they came out.  I just wiped it (for the kids to use, I have a new iMac with Mavericks) and reintalled Tiger from the original discs.  I want to get it back to Lion - which I purchased from the Mac App Store.  But Tiger doesn't have the App Store and I don't have the discs anymore from the intermediate versions.  I tried downloading Lion from the new iMac but it's not available...
    Any ideas?

To get to the App Store, you need to upgrade the Tiger machine to Snow Leopard.

  • Will downloading Lion from the App Store (previously purchased) while on Mountain Lion erase my current OS?

    All,
I'm trying to download Lion from the App Store to make a bootable external hard drive. My concern is that the app store gives me a warning: "OS X 10.8 is already installed on this computer. Are you sure you want to download OS X 10.7?"
I'm not sure what this means and I would prefer not to risk erasing my current operating system. Does anyone have an idea?
    Thank you in advance.

Futhermore, I can't believe that the App Store allows you to download OS X Lion while you are in OS X Mountain Lion, because normally the App Store gives an error because you are running a newer Mac OS X.
If you just download OS X Lion, you won't lose OS X Mountain Lion, because just the installer will be downloaded onto the Applications folder. When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so close it, and use Lion Diskmaker to create an external drive with OS X Lion > http://liondiskmaker.com
As you are running OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend you to make an external drive with OS X Mountain Lion instead, if you can. That's because probably you will want to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion and not Lion

  • Can i reinstall OS X Mountain Lion from scratch from a Time Machine Backup

Can i reinstall OS X Mountain Lion from scratch from a Time Machine Backup
Asking because i'm a new mac user having used windows since 3.11, wanting to know if the Time Machine bacup was enough or will i need to make a seperate OS install disk or usb drive ???
    thanx in advance guys

Lizardcarter's instructions are correct, you can (and possibly should) consider a second external HD to create a bootable clone. Redundancy in backups is a very good thing because backup can fail too. A bootable clone is an external HD that has a mirror of your internal HD so if the internal HD does crash you can boot from the clone, something that cannot be done from TM. This means you will be down for minutes and can resume work until you have had the internal HD replaced. Never use an external HD for both TM and a bootable clone, each should have it's own EHD. The reason being is if the EHD crashes you have lost ALL of your backup and are dead, don't laugh it happens! To create a bootable clone get either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both about $30) and you're pretty set. Many people on these forums (including myself) use that strategy and yes I have had a backup fail.

  • I downloaded Lion from the app store on to my iMac and did not save it to a thumb before installing.  Do I have to buy it again to install on my Macbook Pro and iPad or is there another way to do that?

All my electronics are about a year old.   iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is  OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549.  Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.
    Thank you for your help.
ps: I got an error message and it looks like this did not get posted the first time.  2nd try.

Open the Mac App Store on your MacBook Pro
Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

  • Unable to download Mountain Lion from the App store

Hi, when I try to download Mountain Lion from the app store I get the message, " The product distribution file could not be verified ... " Obviously I'm doing something really stupid. Advice welcome!
    Thanks

A belated thanks for your help. I'd never have solved it otherwise. Maybe Apple could change the automatic reply that I got initially ("The product distribution file could not be verified ....") othewise they risk loosing customers.
    Thanks again.

  • I just bought Lion from the app store and I was wondering how long it will be there for because you can't buy a hard copy of it and I was told they were fazing it out so if my computer crashes and I need to install it again will it still be there??

FWIW, your profile shows that you are already on Lion - did you buy Mountain Lion?
If you purchase an OS from the Mac App Store, it will be listed under your Purchases and will be available to download again if you need it. Note: the license is only for you and is not transferable; if you sell your Mac, you must uninstall it and reinstall the original system.
If you did buy Lion - out of curiosity - since it is no longer showing in the app store, how did you buy it there? Or did you call Apple and they sent you a redemption code?

  • How to prevent computer from sleeping when downloading Lion from the recovery partition?

    Hello,
I just got a new MacBook Pro that came with Lion. I'm reinstalling from the recovery partition and I'm on the downloading additional components stage. It has 3 hours to go and the computer keeps going to sleep. How can I prevent this? I don't want to have to babysit the computer for 3 more hours.
    Thanks.

Looking for an answer to this question now.  Did you find one?  I'm about an hour into a 6+ hour reinstall of Mountain Lion from the Recovery partition on my MacBook Pro.  So I can't change the sleep corners or caffenate it or do much of anything but wait.   I want to go to bed and let it install overnight, but I assume it will go to sleep, and that will kill the download.  It there any way to prevent it from sleeping now?
Even trying to think of something I can put on the trackpad to trick it into thinking I'm touching it.
Maybe ill put it under my dog, and her movements will keep it awake?  Thinking outside the box here.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • HT4007 Does Aperture support Images and videos from the new 3D cameras?

Does Aperture support Images and videos from the new 3D cameras?

If the camera is listed here OS X Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats or here Mac OS X v10.6: Supported digital camera RAW formats then the raw image file is supported by Aperture.
If the camera is not listed then as Keith wrote if it produces JPG's they can be imported into Aperture.
If you told us what camera you were interested in it might help.

When you do get it downloaded, before you do anything else, save the Lion installer - make a copy and put it somewhere safe. you can then reuse, make a clean install and other things.

Yes I strongly recommend making a clone you can boot from in addition to use TimeMachine.
Carbon Copy Cloner will also offer to copy and make a Recovery partition on the 2nd drive.

  • TS4303 When I try to Reinstall Mac OS X Lion using the Recovery by choosing the partition, I got an error message saying that it protected. What should I do?

When I try to Reinstall Mac OS X Lion using the Recovery by choosing the partition, I got an error message saying that it protected. What should I do?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.
