Does reinstalling OSX Lion force all files to be reinstalled?

My USB Ethernet has stoped working on my 2011 MacAir. I've tried all the fixes I could find on these forums including new locations, manual set up etc;
The last recommendation is to reinstall the OS. Question - does doing this automatically force a full re-install of everything ie doc/file/programs,  or just does it overwrite the OS files with new ones? I'd like to avoid a full restore from Time Machine for all my other data, plus I have Parallels running just fine and i do't want to have to reinstall that all over again, if possible.
Thanks,

I think running Software Update is a good idea - I did a fresh install of MLion this last week using the full 10.8.4 installer. After the update SU offered me Digital Raw and Airport Utility updates that I'd already previously installed before doing the fresh install.

It's about 4GB, from memory, and the download speed can be affected from things like site traffic or variations in speed from your own ISP. But in general, it IS a very large download. Also never put your trust in a computer telling you how much time is left to download. As you can see, it recalculates everything more often and more quickly than the Tax Department! (Oh, and don't watch it. You know the old saying)

  • Does gifting OSX Lion require me to pay again if I have already bought it on my account?

Please help me clear my doubt, Does gifting OSX Lion require me to pay again even if I already have it on my account?

Yes, you have to pay again. Your license is for a single user. If you want to gift Lion to someone else why would you even think you wouldn't have to pay again? Did you think you could just give away multiple copies of Lion to people because you bought it for yourself?

  • Nokia C5-03 and Mac OSX Lion - Problems copying files to phone in Mass Storage mode

Whenever I try to load more than one file from my iMac (early 2008, OSX Lion 10.7.2) to my new Nokia C5-03 in Mass Storage mode —since the files are MP3s and Multimedia Transfer doesn’t seem to work at all, I keep on getting asked which transfer mode I want to activate for several times, I always choose Mass Storage, and then the first file starts copying, but when it ends with the first one I have to wait for ±30s only to get asked the same again and again until the second file starts copying, and so on.
It’s driving me crazy, I’ve tried setting in the USB connectivity options not to ask me for the mode when I connect the phone, but it doesn’t work either. It still goes very slow and a lot of “USB Mass Storage transfer mode activated” messages appear.
I’ve tested it with a friend’s C5-03 and it’s still the same, but when connecting them to a Windows computer everything goes great and fast. Has somebody had this problem before? Is there a solution to this? I don’t know if this is the correct board to post this, sorry if it’s not.
    Thanks in advance.
PS: Sorry if there are any mistakes or my English sounds weird, i’m Spanish.

    Hi,
Can you try the suggestions below?
-Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (called Programs
and Features in Microsoft Windows 7).
Select Nokia Ovi Suite in the list of applications and click
    Change/Remove.
In the dialog that appears, choose Repair.
    - Click Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver and repair
-Try creating the connection between your phone and computer
totally from scratch. Start by disconnecting your phone. In
Nokia Ovi Suite, select Tools > Options > My devices. Select
your phone at the top of the window and click Remove this
    device.
Then, select Tools > Add new device, and follow the
    instructions to reconnect the phone.
If this doesn't solve the problem,
-Uninstall the following programs withAdd/Remove Programs in
Control Panel (called Programs and Features in Microsoft
    Windows 7):
    Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver
    Nokia Ovi Suite
    PC Connectivity Solution
Then, download and install the latest version of Nokia Ovi
    I hope this helps.

  • Does Time Machine really restore all files of app?

    Hi mac people,
I have done a clean install, then i don't want use migration assistant to move back things, but when i move back garageband 6.0.5, i open it, then i realise that only app is been restore but all the loops and audio is not, then i search online found that i have to move those things by my own,
So this problem make me wondering does time machine really fully restore?
I also wondering how about other apps or files do they really all been restore even they SEEN like no problems?
    Thanks for helping !!!!!

then i realise that only app is been restore but all the loops and audio is not, then i search online found that i have to move those things by my own,
If you want everything restored from Time Machine, don't use Migration Assistant but use Setup Assistant - migrate al files when you are first prompted to restore from Time Machine or another Mac, after a clean install.
you can select what to restore - the settings, the libraries, the user data.
Since you do not want to use the assistants - to restore Garageband 6.0.5 manually, you transfer all files and folders in the system library:
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
    and the loops from
    /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
    Your plug-ins from
    /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/
and the corresponding folders in your user library ~/Library/

  • Graphic problem with OSX Lion - freezing all windows

I try to define my graphic problem with OSX Lion. Simply if you have set for example hot cornes and switch between desktop, all windows etc. the move of switchng windows i chopping and freezing. I dont idea why, but it hapennig since I installed Windows 7 via bootcamp. But the problem is still here after I remove Windows. Cleaning cash doesnt work. Can anybody help me please?

No, it's not Lion. It may be something you installed. If you just bought it you could also take it back to the Apple Store and they may be able to help.

  • Print Preview is missing from Firefox 6 on Mac OSX Lion in both File Menu and Print Dialog Box

The question says it all really. Print Preview option is missing from both the File menu and from the Print dialog box when you select Print. I use Print Preview a lot to avoid wasting paper.
A relevant issue might be that the Mac OSX app Preview is currently having trouble with various printers including my Xerox and so, temporarily, the default application for all Preview items is now Adobe Reader until Apple get their act together. Perhaps this is affecting things?
    Thanks for any help

It's moved to the PDF dropdown, "Open PDF in Preview"

  • Why does my CD not show all files?

I have a CD-R that I burned on my old G3 of art files--tifs, jpgs, epss etc. There are also a couple of other folders containing logos and graphic files whose contents show up fine, but all the art files (a bunch of folders categorizing contents) do not show up in the window. I can access them if I use the search function ONLY! What gives? Why can't I view the directory of this CD?

In the view window of the CD-R contents, if you change that from Icon view to
one of the other views, can you see a list of contents in the disc? That is how
you normally can see the items in columns or lists.
There is a chance something may be amiss on the actual CD-R media, if it
has some strategic smudge or a few scratches, that could also affect how
the disc is read in a different computer at some later point in time.
Also, some optical drives may use a slightly different format, and while it should
not be a problem among Macs, if the format or disc type is not fully supported,
    the content may appear missing.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Does Mac "OSX Lion" come with "iCloud"?

I am unsure if the new Mac "OS X Lion" comes with the new "iCloud" i hope so but i'm not sure it hasn't said it does or does not on this site

Even if it is free, there is no guarantee it will remain so. Still, it sure looks free to me. Plus, Dropbox security has me worried. I was never interested in MobileMe, even when it was free. I am definitely interested in iCloud, even if it isn't.

  • Does Moc OSX Lion use more battery than Snow Leopard?

Ever since I have updated my MBP Early 2011 (2.2 Ghz Radeon 6750) to Lion, my battery life has gone down tremendously. I used to be able to get a solid 7 hours in (light workload ei. web browsing) and now I'm only able to get 3.5 hours MAX. I'm currently running 10.7.2 and the problem is still there. I have gone through around 200 cycles so it's not like 1000's of cycles or anything. Is this just me or are other people exeriencing the same problems? I plan on going back to snow leopard soon if there is no fix to this.

I have had my MBP since July 2011, and am at 22 cycles.
You must run soley on battery charge, almost never plugged in.
Are you running your battery very much down (10%-20%) before re-charge , or recharging at about 40%?
Running Lithium-Ion batteries almost dead create a "memory" that can make your MBP unchargeable.

  • Time Machine does not backup all files

I recently did a clean install and to my horror i can see that Time Machine does NOT back up all my files.
It seems to be worst in my music library which fortunately is pretty easy to rebuild do to itunes index.
But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?
Or is it just broken and should be avoided?
I have 1,5 year old Macbook Pro Retina 15 inches 500 GB SSD

If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

  • Where is OSX Lion download?

    Hi,
I have downloaded Lion from the App store and it has installed. I cannot find the installer anywhere on my machine. I am having issues with Mail and would like to reinstall either Lion or Mail or uninstall and reinstall both. Where does the OSX Lion app reside once downloaded and installed? Tried all the usual places, downloads...
Has anyone else had this problem?
    Thanks in advance,

  • No Sound from Mac Mini Under OSX Lion 10.7

I had to reinstall OSX Lion Server 10.7 on my Mac Mini late 2011 due to partition and boot record corruption. Since reinstalling I have not have sound. The only sound device that shows under Utilities||Sound is "Internal Speaker". Previously, "Headphones" also appeared. I have a Harman Kardon Soundsticks 2.1 sound system. It has only one sound connector. I always plugged it into the green port on the Mini. It worked fine. Since reinstalling I have no sound at all. Any ideas out there ? Solutions ? I've been through the Cmd-P-R deal, reinstalled OSX Lion Server, - all to no avail. HELP !!!
    TIA.
    Best regards,
    Brian Corll

You have almost 25 GB of free disk space not memory which isn't really very much at all. It is time to consider cleaning up your disk to increase your free space.
If you tell us the specs of your MacMini we can tell you why you are getting the error message.

  • Iphoto disappeared in OSX lion!

I had the entire ilife suite installed in snow leopard along with lots of iphoto and garageband projects, and when I upgraded to OSX lion it all disappeared. To add to that I now have to go to the mac app store to purchase them if I want them now ***!

    Here's your solution:
ok...I had the same problem. I did a fresh install of Lion on a new imac and couldn't find iphoto.
Make sure you've registered your computer and copy of Lion and go to the Mac App Store...not the one in iTunes but the one that sits as a seperate app on your dock (or in your applications folder).
Once logged in you can go to the 'purchases' tab. You should see options to accept and download your missing iLife software there. (ie iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand). It looks like iDvd was scrapped in this latest release unfortunately.

  • QuickTime 10.1 does not seem to be compatible with OSX Lion  - clicking on the displayed file window switches to another displayed app, doesn't play or control the video.

If I open a movie file (appears to be any type - .mov, m4v, mv4) it displays on the desktop, but when clicked, the Mac reverts to another open application (immediately UNDER to point of the mouse click) and not the displayed movie file.  It appears the screen mapping is flawed...
Anyone else have this problem? (does not appear to be a problem with QT7)  Running OSX Lion 10.7.3 and QT Player 10.1 (501.8) - all most current as far as I can tell...

Yes, same problem. The active clickable area appears to be shifted down and to the right as if it is the shadow mask (to make it look like layers in the display) that is responding. Means you can't move the control palette to the top of the window (to not block security video with time track at bottom) or even close the window. The X in the bubble appears when moused over but the click goes through it.
Most obvious if you open more than one movie at a time and they cascade. You can't get at the ones underneath until a few down the stack and it gets an upper wrong one.
      Who's testing these things?
For comparison testing to recreate problem: Mac Pro (System Information has also been dumbed down from System Profiler, push System Report for the useful stuff) with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 driving two displays.
Also viewing desktop of another computer on the network is slower and, for instance in World of Warcraft, the hand pointer flickers.
And finder windows can't be narrowed as much any more to show only a list of file names for drag and drop sorting.
Was hoping that by 10.7.3, it would be safe to jump, since several posts told me how to Terminal > networksetup -setv6off Ethernet to fix iTunes streaming to expresses and other dumb bugs.
