Does resetting PMU erase files on hard drive?

My wife dumped a bud light on my ibook G4. After drying it out, it appears that the system is functioning (software programs still work), but the display is very dim....almost too dim to read.
I saw someone recommended resetting the PMU, since it controls the display backlight. But Apple noted "Warning: Resetting the Power Manager on any PowerBook or iBook will permanently remove a RAM disk, if present, and all of its contents."
Is this going to erase my saved hard drive files?
Also, my date/time settings reverted to 1969. Does this diagnose the problem I now have? Anyone have solutions on what will need to be done/replaced to clear my display of its beer hangover?
Thanks for your help!

Hopefully you unplugged the iBook and removed the battery and turned the iBook over and let it dry thoroughly before powering it up again.
If you removed the battery, that is why your date reset. You just need to go to System Preferences>Date and Time and reset the date and time. This will always happen if the battery is out for a while. If it is out only very briefly, there is a capacitor that might remember the date and time for a very short time.
Did the Bud Lite land on the keyboard? If so, the keyboard could have been damaged. Go to System Preferences>International>Input Menu and check the box that has "Keyboard Viewer". This will install a little flag in your menu bar that you can click on and show the keyboard viewer. As you activate a key, it will be highlighted in the viewer. If it is not, then the key isn't working. If the F1 and F2 keys are not working, they won't dim or brighten the display. I believe there is a very tedious way to clean the keyboard, but replacement might be a better option. Please post back if you have keyboard problems.
As for the RAM disk, I believe that this does not refer to the hard drive, but rather to a separate disk, but I hope that someone who knows what it is for sure will post a clear explanation. But it would certainly be a good idea to back up your files anyway since the beer spill could cause more problems in the future. I believe it would be safe to reset the PMU, but t wouldn't hurt to wait for a knowledgeable posting on what the RAM disk actually is so that you will know whether or not you have one present.
One thing you could do is to find the original gray discs that came with your machine and run the Apple Hardware Test. If you have Applecare or have had it, there is a disc called Tech Tool Delux that also tests the hardware. You could run that too. If you get an error code, it would indicate a hardware problem.
How much beer actually got into the computer? If very little and you were able to keep it from going inside, you may have nothing worse than a damaged keyboard. Please post back with more details of the spill, as that might indicate what steps you should take to be sure that there is no further damage.
Good luck!

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • Erase Time Capsule Hard Drive

I want to restore my time capsule hard drive to factory defaults and erase all of the information. I know how to reset the settings but the hard drive itself is different. What steps do I need to take? Simply delete it all through finder or is there another, better, way?

Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility
Select "Manual Setup", then click the "Disks" icon at the top of Airport Utility window.
In the next window, make sure that "Disks" is highlighted in the "Disks - File Sharing" box
    click "Erase".

  • Can I install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing and restoring hard drive?

Been reading a lot about downloading Lion. Recommended to back up hard drive to ext. drive, erase hard drive, install Lion and then re-install apps and files from ext. drive. Can I just install Lion over Snow Leopard without erasing all apps and files on hard drive?

If you do an upgrade install then be sure to do this first:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Make a bootable backup just in case. Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Does the iPad 2 have a hard drive?

It will either have 16, 32 or 64 Gigabytes of memory. You cant access it like a harddrive but there are apps on the App Store that will make it act like a flash drive to hold files.

Can I use Disk Utility to erase Apple TV hard drive?

I don't know, but I doubt it can be done using Disk Utility. I suggest you consult the user manual for it or see if there is a Reset option in the onscreen menues. If you don't have a manual, then you will find one at http://support.apple.com/manuals.

  • ITunes 7.1.1 deletes music files on hard drive

After updating iTunes to 7.1.1, I discovered that my playlist for "alternative" music had dissappeared. OK, no problem, the music files must still be in "music/itunes". Searched through this folder, but ALL the "alternative" music files were gone from the hard drive - all the music burned from CDs, even those purchased from iTunes! Used "find" in various ways, no luck. They are truly deleted.
After hours and hours of reinstalling all the "alternative" music from backups, all was back as before. I shut my Mac down for the night. The next day I opened iTunes and the "alternative" playlist was gone again - and the music I had put back onto my hard drive had been erased again!
I've tried starting iTunes from an old library - the playlists come back, but the music is not, just shows question marks. I've even done a virus check of the whole HD.
As any ideas as to why this is happening, and what to do?
Now I'm worried that other playlists, and their actual music files will be unpredictably wiped.
Has this happened to anyone else's "Alternative" music files and/or playlists?
I can't believe my music files have been erased off my hard drive - twice!
    Hard to trust iTunes now.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for the reply, it's appreciated.
I usually turn off the computer each night. After updating to 7.1.1, just the "alternative" playlist and music files were gone from my HD. I re-installed the music files from a backup HD.
To test things, I quit iTunes and then opened it again and looked in the music file on the HD, a number of times. The replaced music was still there.
The next morning, I turned on the computer [Of course, I know that an off computer can do nothing ]. When it came time to open iTunes, again the music files were gone. I didn't check to see if the files were there before I opened iTunes, unfortunately.
I did use Norton, but only AFTER I discovered the files were gone ...
At the mo' I'm trying to recreate the problem to see if I can further narrow it down. Putting just one song into the Alternatives playlist, shutting down, starting up, etc. See if it's there. Repairing permissions with Disk Utility, etc etc.
Again, thanks for trying to help!

  • Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • How can I copy outlook files to hard drive

How can I copy large outlook files to the external hard drive with out formatting it?
I currently have Macbook Pro Version OS X 10.9.5.
I tried all the ways copying outlook files, but it says larger files cannot be transferred. My outlook file is about 16gb.
Also tried trough Time Machine...Can anyone list of the steps here to copy these files to my hard drive?
Later, I want to copy these files from hard drive to the new Macbook Pro.....need urgent help please !!!

If your external drive is FAT32 (MS-DOS) format, it won't take file larger than 4GB. There's no way around that, I'm afraid.

  • Best way to erase a portable hard drive?

Hi, I just got done installing a new hard drive in to an iMac and used a portable hard drive when I use SuperDuper. Everything transfered without any problems. But now I want to erase the portable hard drive that contained all of the transfered data. What is the best way to erase that data so I can use the portable hard drive so I have a clean drive and can use it to back up with Time Machine?

If it was set up for SuperDuper, it should be Apple-format.
Go into DiskUtility, select the partition of the external in the left column, and you should have an "Erase" option at the top of the main-activity window.  You can decide if you need more than simple "Erase" (you can do a 7-pass erase, but nromally that is used when transferring a disk to a new user/buyer).

wouldn't it make a difference if the SSD was an Apple product?  And can't you order just the Apple SSD?  At the local Apple store many of the geniuses won't touch it if it's a third party item.

Apple care would recognize the changes as long as it is the same serial #,
    Is that correct ?

I have an ! mark and a folder shown on face of my iPod(mini). When I reset, I get an apple showing for a second or two, then it goes back to !/folder. I think my only choice is to try to restore. Does restoring wipe out the entire computer hard drive or just all iPod and related music files?
