Does Revision 1 IDE cable physically support a second drive?

yes, i am aware of the revision 1 vs. 2 issues, data corruption, size restrictions and all that.
I have purchased a rev2 motherboard off ebay and while I wait for its arrival I want to get a gameplan together for adding a second drive. Above my native HD there appears to be a IDE connection for a second drive (even though it does not have the u-bracket) as well as an extra power cable floating around. If I were to obtain the necessary u-bracket after replacing my board, would i then have an effectively full-fledge revision2?
Secondly, is this the ideal route to go (i've read some concerns about circulation)if in fact it does work, or am i better off getting a dual IDE ribbon and mounting side-by-side?

ok, so i did some hunting for pics of rev1 vs rev2 cable and it appears that what i have is a rev2 cable attached to a rev1 board. Taken from www.everymac.com :
http://www0.info.apple.com/images/kbase/111768/111768_10.gif
I'm guessing the original owner may have swapped out the boards before selling it, or this is an 'interim' model shipped between official revisions. In either case i'm going to assume that it is safe to attach my secondary HD once i intall the new motherboard. Thanks for trying to help!

  • Does Satellite P70-A-129 support the second HDD/SSD

I recently bought this model P70-A-129 from Greece, and i am wondering if it accepts a second HDD / SSD drive.
I opened the underneath cover and there is a second connector but i don't know if it is connected to the Main-board.
Can you assist me by telling me if this model can manage a second drive?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Its easy to test this
You can try to connect the HDD placed in the first HDD bay to the 2nd HDD controller in the 2nd HDD bay. In case the BIOS would recognize the HDD properly, the upgrade should be possible.

  • [845 Series] Does my MS-6507 motherboard support 200gb hard drives???

I just recently bought a Maxtor 200gb hard drive and can only see 127gb of it when I installed it.  So I'm wondering does my motherboard (MS-6507) even support 200gb hard drives?  If so, do I just need to update BIOS or my OS (Win XP service pack 2) and I should see the remaining?  Thanks!!!

  • Does Pavilion G6-1d71nr laptop supports solid state drive?

I have a Pavilion G6(g6-1d71nr) laptop.  Currently it has the factory installed 500GB HD and 8GB memory.  The laptop had been running sluggish lately, I won't be able to increase memory as it maxes out at 8GB per user manual.  I am wondering
if the laptop supports solid state drive(or even hybrid one), I couldn't seem to find in the user manual that the SSD is supported.  If not, will it support a hybrid?
    Thanks!

  • HT204057 Why does Time Machine no longer support external hard drives connected to an Airport Extreme base station?

I'm pretty sure that upto a few months ago I had a hard disk connected via USB to my Airport Extreme and I was able to backup all the computers on my home network. However, somehow over the last few months this had stopped happening. I am not able to select my network disks for time machine backup.
There is a very unhelpful sentence on Apple's website which simply says it does not allow backup to hard disks connected to Airport Extreme via USB. Does anyone know why this is? Is there a way around this? Can I connect a drive to my desktop computer and have other computers backup through the network to that?

The above KB article indicates you can, though I have not personally tried it.

  • Ide cable to hard drives

Ok i have one ide cable running my two hard drive's master and slave 2 X 80's  ? would it be better for me to take the slave off the ide cable as i have the two comeing off the one ide and run it in the spear ide socket i have on my mobo.
I think it would and find the slave faster in windows as there seem to be a bit of a lag when i hit the slave in windows, not a lot but just think it would work better on its own.
     ? what do you think.
Cheers for all info as i have never befor tryed this and just think it would get rid of the lag on the slave,  maybe not.

  • Beige G3 Hard Drive Slave IDE cable problem

I have an old beige G3 and have a 20GB Western Digital hard drive I’ve initialized and want to add as a slave. The problem is that while I have the required extra power out for the third 5.25” bay, there’s nowhere for me to connect into the IDE cable. The cable seems to be 1 female connector short. Is this something that was stock? I can deinstall the ZIP drive installed in the third bay, but I’d rather keep the whole thing intact if I can.
Am I going to have to add an IDE/SCSI PCI card? If so, do you have any recommendations? How would adding a card affect the existing SCSI chain? Also, is this sort of a change going to have any negative effects on the power supply, and is an addition like a slave HD recommended for an old beige from this point of view?

"Am I going to have to add an IDE/SCSI PCI card? If so, do you have any recommendations? How would adding a card affect the existing SCSI chain?"
Your G3 natively supports IDE/ATA/ATAPI devices, having two ATA channels to do so. There is also an onboard SCSI-1 bus (max. 5 MB/sec), for connection of external/internal SCSI devices. Your profile info indicates the G3 Server, so you'd likely have an Ultra-SCSI PCI card and hard drive, if the hard drive is a SCSI device. The CD-ROM and Zip drives undoubtedly share one of the ATA channels. If that's the case, you still have an extra ATA channel for connection of extra IDE/ATAPI drives. What does the Apple System Profiler ("Devices and Volumes") indicate about the type(s) of installed drives? If your existing hard drive is connected to one of the ATA channels, you can configure dual drives as master/slave on that channel, provided that your G3 has a ROM revision $77D.45F1 or $77D.45F2
Assuming that you have the mini-tower model, the lone IDE hard drive in the top of the chassis usually has the single device OEM ribbon cable attached to it. If you want to connect a second drive as slave on the same ATA channel, you'll need a 24" (no longer) ribbon cable with connectors for both drives. The 24" cable has adequate separation between the drive connectors, enabling connection to each. Several years ago, I bought four of these ribbon cables (40-conductor, 24") from Radio Shack, but I don't even know if they still carry that item in their stores today. A PC store should have them. You can't use the newer 80-conductor Ultra-ATA ribbon cables, because they're typically only 18" long, and that's not long enough. Cables longer than 24" are prone to causing data corruption, so avoid them. For ease of connection, you may have to move the CD-ROM and Zip drives down one bay each, and install the slave hard drive in the bay formerly occupied by the CD-ROM drive.

  • Is a hard drive faster on a shorter IDE cable?

    Hello,
I am considering connecting my main hard drive with a 24" IDE cable rather than using my 18" cable which I used previously. (The IDE cable therefore will be 6" longer.) Will this slow down the performance of the hard drive? My hard drive is a 40 GIG, 7200 RPM hard drive.
Also, if you configure a hard drive as a "slave" (rather than "master") does this reduce the performance of a harddrive?
    Thanks,
PS: Both my 18" IDE cable and my 24" IDE cable are 40 pin IDE cables with 80 conductor wires rated for ATA/133. The difference is in the length only.

I have a shocking one for you. I just measured the
ribbon which used to be in my Beige G3/300MT and it
is about 140 cms long (For the normal people here, that's 52 inches) (purchased in a PC store),
and not only. It is a 40-wire cable, not an 80.
I used this to be able to connect and disconnect
everything with the case completely open (I hate
    short wires.....).
This was connecting my "burner" and my storage hard
drive (master & slave) to one of the channels.
My emergency startup drive connected to the second
IDE channel and installed inside the case (near the
motherboard), and my main startup drive is a SCSI.
I haven't noticed any particular problems with speed.
Note that my storage drive was only accessed to copy
files onto it, not as a working directory, and
therefore mounted in that position as a slave on
    purpose.
The IDE startup drive had a much shorter ribbon, also
    a 40-wire cable.
The Sony burner used to clock just slightly over a
minute to burn an audio CD at 52x (yes, I know....it
is a little suicidal, but I like it), and got stuck
every now and then, but hey, what's life without a
    few coasters?
The performance was excellent, and I think the flaws
were due mostly to the Beige, rather than the drive
(the drive still lived in my B&W until I got a DVD
burner), and now sits in a drawer awaiting new
    assignments).
I also tried using the same ribbon in my B&W, just to
connect an extra drive (I didn't have any other
ribbons left), and it worked flawlessly.
    cheers

  • Replacement IDE cables for X-Fi Plati

    Hello,
This sounds a little silly but while building a new computer I was removing the IDE cable from the I/O box from the PCI card and accidentally torn the ribbon off from the end connectors. Now I'm not sure if this is due to a faulty manufacturing on the ribbon (this never happens to me with regular IDE cables for hard dri'ves) or what, but I can't seem to find a replacement IDE cables anywhere.
I've tried my local best buy, fry's, PC Club, compusa, but none of them have the IDE cables that would fit with the one that came with the Creative X-Fi Platinum.
Does anyone know any online or retail stores that might sell these IDE ribbon cables? Are there any rounded cable versions of these? (for better airflow)
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

That is not a IDE cable, it's specialized for the X-fi. You'll need to contact Customer Support for a replacement.

The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.

Or if you've recently got the phone unlocked then you'll need to connect it to  itunes and then do a fresh restore to unlock it ,although for most users simply connecting to itunes for few seconds did the trick.

  • Error: sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported.

    Hi all--
Bought an iPhone 5 off ebay. It's totally wiped, and when I go to activate, I get a "Sim Not Valid" error on the phone, and "sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported" in iTunes.
It is an AT&T phone, and has an AT&T sim in it. Talked to AT&T, and they said it just needed to be unlocked. I got the seller to go through that process. However, the last step for unlocking is:
    1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have Internet connectivity.
    2. Ensure the original SIM card that came with this device is inserted in your iPhone.
    3. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
    4. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes.
I assume ideally, the seller was supposed to still have the phone and complete the unlock himself. But I have the phone and cannot backup and restore because I get the sim error in iTunes which blocks me from doing anything as far as I can tell.
Am I missing a step? Is there any way for me to complete the unlock, or do anything at all to get this phone working even as an iPod, other than sending it back to the seller?
    Thanks.
    Chris

Then return the phone to the seller and get your money back.
The symptoms you describe are typical of a phone that was hacked or jailbroken to unlock it at some point. Very often after doing so, when the phone is restored, it becomes completely unable to activate even on the carrier it was originally locked to.

  • Does Apple iPhone 4 Dock support answering calls through apple headphone

Does Apple iPhone 4 Dock support answering calls through apple headphone? or is the audio out just a simple audio out that cannot interact with the headphone cable remote control, e.g. answering calls , skipping to next song as we used to as normal?

From my experience, whichever one is connected last reigns supreme and takes over.
When I walk to my car, I have my headphones in, and when I plug it into my car dock (with the headphones still plugged in and music still playing), the music switches from the headphones and pumps through my car stereo.
Then when I get out of the car and plug my headphones in (with the car dock still attached and playing music), the headphones take over.

  • Short IDE cable for B&W?

Does anyone here know where/if I might be able to find a 2-device IDE (Ultra ATA) cable shorter than the usual 18 inches (i.e., right-sized for the B&W with two IDE drives in the stack bracket)? I am currently using an 18" Ultra ATA cable that shipped with one of my current drives, and am concerned about that much cable stuffed into a fairly small space--particularly where airflow is concerned. With my B&W freezing up regularly (see my post in the Usage forum), I would like to mitigate any heat-related factors if possible.
Thanks for any assistance/insight you can provide.
    Pete

That is a standard 80-wires on 40-pin headers cable suitable for high speed drives. The additional wires are connected to the existing about 5 grounds inside the header so that a ground is placed between each signal and the next one.
Many vendors can supply them, but you need to be careful when installing them -- unlike most Mac cables, Brand-X cables may not be keyed, so installing them upside down is a possibility. Rounded cables are also available -- the best ones use twisted-pair construction.
You can buy a used original part on eBay.
