Does running Sophos virus protection reduce battery life dramatically? Also, is virus protection necessary for my mac running Lion?

Information on virus protection and battery life is much appreciated. Thank you.

To repair permissions, which will probably help a lot...
Applications-> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> select your hard drive name  Repair Disk Permissions  You might want to do this procedure weekly.
That would be overkill. In earlier versions of Mac OS X, permissions did appear to become correupted quite easily, but no more. Yes, repairing permissions can fix problems once in a while, but it's not something to waste your time doing weekly if there are no symptoms. See Randy Singer's Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance on this subject.
I just got my first virus EVER. ClamXav is a free program to check for viruses.
ClamXav will not find any viruses on your Mac unless they are for Windows or Unix platforms as there are none that we know about. There is malware for the Mac which can affect it if you allow it to by installing it. What was the name of this "virus"?

    Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

    Thank you again for your advice, and I am sure your right but as a simplton I have to argue that the problem is asociated with Mavericks in so much as - one does not have any of these issues running any previous OS and therefore, the issue is a Mavericks one when upgrading.  It is all to easy for the techies to say "its on your mac' if proper testing and development had been done on,  at the very least , the apple software the upgrade should not have issues.  its a bit late after installing and having Apple update remind you all the time to upgrade then to say sorry - your fault for having incompatible software like mail .  However, I suggest you look at the other apple logs / site that complain of battery drain after mavericks they all point to issues that are as a RESULT of the upgrade and yes technically you will argue that is because the original software in not compatible or some such.  Lets not go on and on I have sorted the problem - don't use Mail and battery life is OK, Use mail and watch it drain.  Once again thank you please don't feel the need to respond.

    Hi. Does using the cover lock help battery life?

    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Congratulations on your new iPhone!  You can sync information to your iPhone from your MacBook Pro using the Info tab in iTunes when your iPhone is connected.  Use the steps in the following article:

    None are '''''necessary''''' to use Firefox, but some parts of some web pages aren't going to work without a specific plugin being installed.

    Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
    Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
    The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
    A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
    Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

    It depends on the uses you give to your computer, because the battery will have capacity for less time if you are using professional apps than using Safari. Theoretically, the MacBook Pro with Retina display battery should have capacity for 7 hours, but as I said, this will decrease depending on the apps

  • Does iCloud Sync reduce battery life?

    Just acquired on iPhone4S & I cant see the point of iCloud.
    If I switch off iCloud sync will it not save battery life?
    Why do we need iCloud? Cant we just continue backing up to iTunes?

    iCloud does significantly more than back up, indeed unless you don't have a computer to back up to, I wouldn't recommend you use iCloud for back up. I suggest you read up on what else iCloud does before deciding not to use it, but yes in some circumstances there will be no point in using it and you can turn it off, and will presumeabally save you some battery.

  • How does 2nd generation mini get better battery life?

    Hey all
    Just wondering basically if the 1st generation ipod mini can have the battery changed or something so as to give it the claimed 18 hour battery life of the 2nd generation rather than just 8 hours

    You can measure and compare battery 'life' by looking at the capacity in mAh. As the Mini battery is 400mAh, you can expect somewhat proportional run-time increases as you get higher capacity.
    See: http://pdasmart.com/products/AP39ipodpartscentermini.htm as an example. This is the largest that I have seen, but I'm not really looking at this time. Do a Google search for more like this.

  • After ICS update problems typing when plugged in, and battery life shortened, also Dolphin browser runs slow.

    I did the update and even did a factory reset, and I am having
    problems typing when plugged in to the wall charger, I get random keystrokes,
    from all over the keyboard, not just the keys around the one i want to press.
    Dolphin browser is running supper slow, especially when on Facebook. The
    battery life has lost at least an hour.

    Phones will do that when plugged in, esp with cheap chargers.. it has to do with the voltage and coveting and the digitized screen. You can google if you want more indepth there
    clear data out of dolphin,check for update? also read comments on the app maybe it sucks on ics
    battery stats got erased when you did a factory reset, give it a few charge cycles

  • Reduced Battery Life After 10.6.8 Update - a Solution!

    After updating to the latest version of Snow Leopard on my MBA13", my battery life plummeted suddenly from 7-9 hours to 2-3 hours. Genius Bar people replaced the battery under warranty but that made zip difference.
    Exploring further I found that the Dock was running the CPU almost constantly at 100% and the fan was going berserk. Kept the breakfast warm though :-). Tracing it further, Parallels (ver 6) was the culprit. I did the following:
    1:     Launched Parallels;
    2:     Clicked the Virtual Machine (VM) menu;
    3:     Went to the Options section;
    4:     Removed Parallels from the Dock (left my desktop icon for it alone) by unchecking the 'Show Windows Applications Folder in Dock';
    5:     Restarted the machine.
    Result?
    Dock usage of CPU back to normal, fan silent, breakfast cold, and battery life back to 7-9 hours. JOY!!!

    Did the problem persist with the latest version - ParallelsDesktop-parallels-en_US-6.0.12092.670880 - ? If so then you should report this to Parallels as there may be more things needing fixing to eliminate this problem completely.
    Oh, and this info is from Kappy, not MacBookProHayden.
