Does Safari have a bug ?? December 06, 2006

For the past week it appears that Safari is getting sicker. Web pages I have viewed a thousand times are now not loading. I haven't been able to get onto google in at least a week. Images are not being displayed on other sites and sites that do load take a while. also the server for my mail times out ?? I have deleted cookies, reset safari, emptied cache ... so what do I do now ?? anyone else having the same problems ??

I think you issue maybe with the security update that was issued last week.
Whenever I try and change my Top Friends, the page just hangs. The problem occurs when I try and navigate to page 2 - 8 of my friends. the page hangs then gives me the following error message:
Safari could not open the page “http://editprofile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editTopFriends&UserName =++++++++++(REPLACED BY POSTER)+REPLACED BY POSTER+REPLACED BY POSTER)

Also, my page was completely jumbled as well (went thru the pain of re-doing the page... but haven't seem to have an issue since).
I'm also have issue on other sites (mainly messageboards) which I think is Java Script related. In most cases the page hang at 'completed 6 of 7 items' (when viewing the activity window it reads:
http://www.burstnet.com/cgi-bin/ads/ad10031b.cgi/v=2.0S/sz=468x60A/88471/NI/RETU RN-CODE/JS/ 0 bytes of ?). After a minute or two it times out (activity window says Timed Out) and the page appears (of course the ad is missing)
This issued started at the same time as the myspace issue.
And yes, I did the security update last week, that's when i started having issues...
Lastly ,this is happening on BonEcho (Firefox 2.0) as well, which mean it may not be just Safari. Can anybody verify? Any solutions?
Judging by the number of people posting issues with Safari (which a lot seem to be similar in nature) since the security update, we are not alone...

    Does safari have a homepage on the iPad?

    No. you can't set a home page in Safari. But - you can add a shortcut to a home page on your home screen that will always open to that page that you want to use.
    Launch Safari and navigate to the web page that you want as your home page. Tap the Arrow icon next to the url field in the Safari tool bar at the top - and then select Add to Homescreen. That will put an icon on your home screen that will open to the selected home page in Safari when you tap on it.

  • Quick question...  does safari have add-ons or plug ins?

    I've been Safari and firefox intermittently for the past week or so, and I've definitely noticed that Safari is faster than firefox most of the time, which I really like. And I like how links to some major websites are built across the top below the address bar, too. I also like how it's streamlined and condensed.
    However, I like firefox, too... namely because of all the add-ons and plug ins, such as foxytunes, download helper, the toolbars for yahoo and google (those are the four I have because those are the only ones I use).
    So, does Safari have plug-ins, or add-ons available, akin to firefox, or the app store (that I've heard about) for the i-phone? Because, if so, (if I could get those four plug-ins, or equivalents) that would be enough to make me do a complete switch.

    Hi and welcome to the Apple discussion forum!
    Yes Safari do use plugins as well as firefox, i guess that you already got the Flash plugin installed.
    But you find some other available plugins at this site as well, that you maybe not have installed yet.
    http://www.apple.com/safari/download/plugins.html <<
    And regarding the Appstore that has really nothing to do with Safari though, the appstore is a
    place where you can Buy/Download software for your iPhone. Cheers, J~G

  • Does Safari have a css property to emulate IE's disabled vertical scrollbar

    Hi,
    Does Safari have a css property to force the always-on disabled Internet- Explorer-type scroll bar like Firefox has? The site design needs to plan for the scroll bar width anyway, and I don't want the screen jumping left and right when the scroll bar activates and deactivates. I also don't want to use the active scroll bar by setting lengths to height plus one.
    Thanks!
    Thanks!

    This isn't about the css standard. I agree that IE is a huge impediment to progress on the Internet as a whole. Having scroll bars showing by default or not is a browser design choice.
    Firefox and Safari have initially chosen to hide them by default, and have them visible only when content exceeds page length. I used to think that was the "right" way. I, and many others, now realize that IE has it right. The advantage is the page doesn't jump around depending on content. The designer must compensate for the possibility of a scroll bar in the design anyway. Firefox has recognized the validity and widespread support for this position and has since incorporated a proprietary css property to render the disabled scroll bar. They separate their properties by prefixing them with moz to circumvent conflicts with what may become a W3C standard property in the future. My question is whether or not Safari has any means available to web developers that enable them to display an inactive scroll bar yet.
    Thanks!

  • Does safari have...???

    a function similar to the function that firefox has where you enter about:config into the address bar and get a ton of functions? does safari have something like that?

    In Firefox/Mozilla, you can type "about:config" into the address bar to get a huge of all of the preference configurations (it's a HUGE list). Lots of advanced settings there.
    Check 'er out.
    Safari doesn't do this. Closest it has is the standard <code>defaults</code> command in Terminal. If you really want a simple, fast browser that has this level of configurability, I'd recommend Camino. The current nightly builds of 1.0a1 are hot.
    (Not to dis Safari at all. I think it's a good browser.)

  • Does safari have a do not track feature?

    Does safari have a "do not track" feature?

    Safari v.6 does via Safari Preferences... > Privacy tab:
    If you're on a version of Safari prior to v.6 you can install the Do Not Track Plus extension — see HERE under the Security category.
    Note that Safari v.6 is included in Mountain Lion and is available for Lion via Software Update.

  • Does safari have do not track software?

    Does Safari have an option for "do not track" within their browser? If so, how do I activate it or find it?
    Thank you

  • Safari switched to half screen on my iPhone 6. Restarting fixed that. Does Safari have a half screen mode? Where's the switch?

    DDoes Safari have a half-screen mode?

    This is a feature called Reachability - was not sure if the 6 had it - the 6 Plus does - lightly double tapping the home button makes the upper half of the screen slide lower for easier one handed operation - you can turn it on or off in settings

  • Does Safari have a link preview option?

    As an example, I'm reading a blog that has a weblink, but it's been renamed and not the regular address. I'd like to be able to move the mouse pointer over the weblink and see a preview of where the link leads before clicking. Is there a setting within Safari that allows me to do this?
    BTW, I don't know how to abbreviate and rename a link like I've referenced above. Can someone give me an idea of how one does this too?
    Thank you.

    Is there a setting within Safari that allows me to do this?
    Choose to show the Status Bar in the View menu and then hover the pointer over the link.
    Can someone give me an idea of how one does this too?
    When writing HTML by hand, use code such as:
    <A HREF="http://www.apple.com/">Apple</A>
    If using an editor, check the documentation for it.

  • Why does Safari have trouble connecting to the web?

    I keep getting the message, Safari cannot open the page, because your iPad is not connected to the internet. I have reset my wifi connection daily, unplugged my router, plugged it back in. I shut my iPad down with the power button. I have called my internet provider. But the problem continues daily. My lap top has no problems, or the Windows Tablet.

    New information about the problem:
    I discovered the apple applications work when I have a wired ethernet connection to the wireless router but they don't work when I'm only connected wirelessly. Are there settings in the router I should check? I still wonder why it's only apple apps having this issue.

  • Why does Safari have a problem loading images on some websites?

    Safari has a problem loading pages properly or images on certain websites. Apple.com is one of the websites. On my way in here this time it didnt load any images on the front page. I emptied my cache and reloaded the page but that didnt help. Clicked on a broken image that took me to the proper page but without any images. Clicked on a different broken image on to the page and the images load no problem. Click back to the home page images load problem. Clicked on in to support forums and posted this topic.
    Any ideas... it has done this for awhile. Everything is enabled in web content(preferences) Always accept cookies is selected.
    Thanks

    Hi all,
    I occasionally see messages telling me that my software won't let me see the HTML version of an email, but it's there on the page when I open it. This happens mostly with emails from Apple, but have also had a similar message from a few of the photography mags that I subscribe to.
    For my part, I just ignore it. It won't go away, but I just don't let it bother me.

  • Does JOptionPane have a bug in jdk1.4?

    Sorry to post this again, but last time had posted it under a different title/topic. The following piece of code works fine with jdk1.3, but HANGS with jdk1.4-import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class TestDriver extends JPanel {
       JTextField textField1, textField2;
       MyInputVerifier inputVerifier;
       public TestDriver() {
          initPanel();
       private void initPanel() {
          textField1 = new JTextField(10);
          textField1.setName("Test");
          textField2 = new JTextField(10);
          this.add(textField1);
          this.add(textField2);
          inputVerifier = new MyInputVerifier();
          textField1.setInputVerifier(inputVerifier);
       public static void main(String[] args) {
          JFrame frame = new JFrame();
          frame.getContentPane().add(new TestDriver());
          frame.setSize(200, 100);
          frame.setVisible(true);
          frame.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
             public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {
                System.exit(0);
       class MyInputVerifier extends InputVerifier {
          public boolean verify(JComponent comp) {
             //only when the user enters "Test" in the first text field, should the focus be
             //transferred to the next text field
             if(comp.getName().equals("Test")) {
                String text = ((JTextField)comp).getText();
                if(("Test").equals(text)) {
                   return true;
                } else {
                   showError();
                   return false;
             return true;
       private void showError() {
          //this works fine with both jdk1.3 and jdk1.4
          System.out.println("Wrong!\n Enter \"Test\"");
          //this is where the program hangs when run with jdk1.4
          JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "Wrong!\n Enter \"Test\"");
    }Can anyone please confirm that it really doesn't work with jdk1.4? Also please let me know if anything is wrong with the program.
    I searched in the bug database and found that a few bugs on similar topics have already been reported. But I didn't find one (which is open) particularly on this topic. Is anyone aware of a bug on this topic already reported? If so, could you please post the appropriate link here.
    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks for the reply. The problem is not related to JOptionPane. It's related to verify method of InputVerifier. First of all, as per the jdk1.4 Javadocs, the verify method is not allowed to have side effects. So calling JOptionPane.showMessageDialog() from within verify is not a correct implementation. But the javadocs say that shouldYieldFocus of InputVerifier is allowed to have side effects. So basically the shouldYieldFocus method needs to be implemented and it should pou up a dialog when the input is incorrect.
    BUT, it doesn't work either. It has a bug (4532517). Here is the link to the related bug report-http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4532517.html
    A workaround has been given there and after using that, the program works fine.
    I have no idea, why it works fine with 1.3. As you said, due to changes in the Focus mechanism in jdk1.4, this problem has arisen.
    Thanks.

  • Does Safari have issues with Java?

    When I log into my IG Index financial spread betting account safari usually quits unexpectedly immediately after the dealing screen has loaded. This is causing me huge frustration. The site relys a lot on Java. I believe there were issue with Java in Mac OS 10.3.9 that may still exist on 10.4.X

    Do you have the latest versions of Java installed?
    Have you enabled Java in Safari's preferences?
