Does Safe Boot clean font caches?

I found this in the OS10.4.11 Help file under Safe Boot:
"Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501."
Someone in another forum tells me that it isn't true. Is it?

So, if there were more than one user account, safe boot will only clear the font cache for the user who logs in while in safe boot. And if you then logged in as another user, it would clean out that cache (not that this is what people would normally do, but I'm just trying to understand all of this).
But, the system font cache is not affected, right? So if I suspect a font cache is causing problems, leaving the system cache unchanged might not relieve the problem.
You've got it!
Rather than trying to track all of the various font cache (and other cache files) yourself, there are free utilities you can download that do all of the work for you. Font Finagler clears just font cache files. If you want to clear other cache files at the same time, OnyX can do that.

  • TS1381 My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).  I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, test all other keys with keyboard view (all others work)  - HELP!!

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

  • What does Safe Boot leave out that is messing things up?

The patient is a 2012 Macbook Pro that replaced a 2009 Macbook but to no real benefit: it's no faster and very frustrating to use. 4 Gb ram, 7200 rpm drive (the old machine swapped so much I added a faster drive to at least speed up that process. Mavericks seems to manage memory better, not as much swapping).
    Symptoms:
lot of beachballs, spinners, even at login time as it tries to restore my old work session
slow keyboard entry in URL address window, slow acceptance of return key. Sometimes takes 2-2 attempts to get it to load a page
application switching is terrible, totally unresponsive sometimes, even though I can see that the CPU is idling (I have Activity Monitor in the Dock with the CPU history as the icon: 4 cores and nothing happening, maybe one of them showing any activity).
Even what I would expect to be lightweight processes — System Preferences, Terminal — take ages to load. I suspect some kind of cache corruption or other damage but have no way to verify. That's not the case in Safe Boot. Things are snappy, as I would expect.
I reinstalled Mavericks last night but no difference. I assume that would remove any kernel extensions or add ons that might have been mucking things up.
Just booted in Safe Boot and used the Guest account, things were pretty speedy, much more like what I want. Logged out of it and into my own account, things are better, very quick to load. So it seems Safe Boot leaves some things out I might be well rid of. Trouble is, I don't know what they are. Another diagnostic would be to create an external boot drive and add my home directory to see if I see any difference there. It might be slower since it's external but maybe not as bad.
How can I isolate what might be causing this?

Safe Mode disables third-party kernel extensions and other startup items.
You need to look at what you have set to startup automatically.
The first place to look is in the Users & Groups system prefs, your account, Login Items.
To delete items from the list, select it and click the - button at the bottom of the list. Unchecking the checkbox does nothing.
The other places where software can install startup items is in your user Library/LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, or StartupItems. In the first two, the files will be a single plist. In the StartupItems it will be a folder.
It is best to use the program's uninstaller to remove them, but you can do it manually if you want.
Once you remove them, you will have to log out and log back in.

  • Why does a Safe Boot fix my video problem?

After visiting my local Genius Bar twice (and getting two different answers), I erased and reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 on my late-2006 "white plastic" iMac.
I reinstalled the version of SL that came with the iMac, then upgraded it twice to OS 10.6.8. Software Updater says all of my OS components are up-to-date.
My video-corruption problems ("ghosting", "tearing", pixelation of icon, then the kernel CRASHES within 20 minutes) appear when I boot normally. But they permanently disappear when I reboot into the Safe Mode!
I've search Apple.com and every other site I can find without a clear answer to this:
What extensions, StartUp items, software daemons or gremlins DO NOT load in Safe Mode? Shouldn't one of them be the cause of my problem? Or does Safe Boot work on a hardware-level, too?
This happens on ALL accounts, both Admin and regular users. No external devices are connected except the wired mouse and wired keyboard.
I've zapped the PRAM three times, and I've unplugged it for hours. Disk Utility shows everything is good, too. There's about 50 gigs left on the internal 750 GB hard drive.
The so-called "Geniuses" both ran their Triage OS off an external drive and my iMac hardware passed ALL of their tests. One said it just needed a reinstall (a free fix!!), and the other said my video card is bad ($800, and I have to use an outside repair shop).
Can someone give me an idea how to proceed? I've been working in Safe Mode for days, but that prevents me from using: Sound, my home network, fonts, Preview, editing in iPhoto, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Mike,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I read the linked post about QE, but I don't see how it could help me troubleshoot my problem. Could you clarify: is QE a piece of "software" (that is, a file -- like an extension)?
If QE IS a piece of software that is disabled in a Safe Boot, I should be able to move it to my Desktop and restart. If my video problem is eliminated, the QE software is the problem, right?
But then, if my problem is caused by a file/extension, why would the problem occur (and be eliminated in a Safe Boot) right after I re-installed the OS? Shouldn't all the System software be pristine right after re-installation? But since it's NOT fixed by the re-installation, it seems like a hardware problem -- like the expensive video card. That's what's confusing me.
So, I'm proceeding as if the problem is caused by a file being loaded into memory and I'm trying to disable the items that don't load in Safe Boot Mode one-at-a-time. I just need a specific list of what those items are (and their locations on my hard drive).
In OS/9, I used Conflict Catcher to do this automatically, but I haven't found an OSX app to do the same. So I'm trying to do it manually.
Please excuse my layman's terms. Any help is appreciated.

  • Grey screen on startup - safe boot works

Hi. I have a Mac Pro (2008) that starts up with the apple logo and the spiining wheel. Then the screen goes blank. I have tried everything at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Interestingly it does work in safe boot mode (but lots of the functionality isn't there).
Disk utility doesn't find any problems. Hardware check from the original disks is very slow but says the hardware is working.
I even got a new disk and put a clean install of Mountain Lion, and got the same behaviour.
I think I'd like to try various options of what is disabled by safe mode, to find the culprit, but I can't seem to find what that may be.
    Thanks,
    David

I did something better; I erased the disk and did a clean install of Mountain Lion. (I had previously bought a new disk becuase I though that it might be a disk failure). But I still get the same problem. In fact I got the problem during the install. But I could finish the install doing  safe boot.  Again, I can do a safe boot, but not a standard one. And this occurs before the login.
The hardware check from the original disk says that there are no problems with the hardware.
I will now try a clean install of Snow Leopard and see whether that works.
I'm guessing that it is a hardware problem, because Mountain Lion has worked fine for a few months. But I've no hints as to what it may be.
    Thanks again,
    David

  • Safe Boot gone

I have two internal hard drives (A and B) in my PowerMac G5. I normally use drive A which after some sort of update of significant changes I clone to drive B. Then I will start up from drive B to defragment drive A. For some time now I would start drive B in safe boot mode (holding down the shift key during start up) when I would use it to defrag drive A.
Well, a little while ago when going through this routine, holding down the shift key while starting up had no effect. I've tried it several times starting from both drives, I did things like checking the disk to see if it needed repair, maintenance routines, repair permissions, and so forth, all to no avail.
Anyway, I give up on it for now. As far as I can tell Safe Boot is no more.
Anybody else have this happen or have comments on this.

    "... for some time now..."
Sounds like lots of experience with how and when to hold down the shift key to me, doesn't it? not "operator error" type situation.
If it doesn't go into Safe mode but does boot from the "B" drive, I would check the drive in Single User Mode and running fsck followed by Applejack to remove cache folders and swap files (but not the /Users cache folders).
Also, does Safe boot work on Drive A?
And have you tried resetting nvram? (from Open Firmware ideally).

  • Cleaning the cache

How do I clean my cache files? is that something we do as a rutine?
Is the program MacKeeper safe to clean the cache files?
Am I suppost to keep my firewall enable?     this is my first Mac and as happy as I am I would like to keep it in great shape!! Thank you so much

    Use your machine normally.
From the X Lab's Maintaining Mac OS X
System and User cache cleaning are troubleshooting steps, not part of regular maintenance.
Caches are used to improve the performance of both the operating system and applications. Removing System and User cache files for other than troubleshooting purposes defeats the purpose of cache files, which will be rebuilt automatically at your next restart or login, adding time to those processes.
Potential side effects of System-level cache cleaning are discussed in our "Side effects of System cache cleaning" FAQ.
Accordingly, cache cleaning can be an important troubleshooting step, such as when used in our"Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ, but it is not regular maintenance.

  • Wired memory does not clear after safe boot

My iMac started freezing up about a month ago when I was watching a video and would only boot up in safe mode. I noticed in Activity Monitor that 5.30 GB of memory was "wired" (out of 8 GB total). I was able to boot normally after cleaning the caches.
The problem has gotten worse and the iMac now freezes after a short while of playing video.  As of now I can ONLY boot up in safe mode and Activity Monitor always shows 5.30 GB of wired memory, however no processes are using more than 1% of CPU (other than Activity Monitor itself).
Today I downloaded and tried a couple of memory cleaner apps just so I could reboot normally, but the wired memory (5.30 GB) won't budge.  After doing some research I learned about the kextstat command to see what memory is being wired.  This is the process using the most memory (assuming that longer numbers are the largest):
    71    0 0xffffff7f80e98000 0x1aa000   0x1aa000   com.apple.kext.AMD4800Controller (8.1.2) <70 69 10 9 5 4 3 1>
Also, here are the last 2 lines from the SYSTEM LOG just before the freeze (each line was repeated 7 times):
7/2/13 12:44:23.325 PM coreaudiod[272]: Enabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is inactive
7/2/13 12:45:21.280 PM coreaudiod[272]: Disabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is active
Any suggested next steps in troubleshooting are appreciated.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    for k in {,/S*}/L*/E*/{,.?}*.kext; do test -f "$k/Contents/Info.plist" && /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$_" | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo $k; done | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    Repeat with this line:
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 4
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, Steps 1-4 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom.

  • Which caches are cleared with Safe Boot in Leopard?

Periodically, usually after using StartupManager (why this should happen is another question), I have a longer than usual start up and see these in the log. If I do a SafeBoot, the next boot is normal, and these logs disappear. Assuming this is related to the caches that SB clears, instead of doing a time consuming SafeBoot each time this happens, I'd like to be able to manually clear just the caches that booting into SB clears for this issue.
(Perhaps, if this isn't related to the caches cleared out in SB, someone will have an idea what SB is doing to fix these slow bootups.)
BootCacheControl: could not open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: No such file or directory
localhost com.apple.launchctl.System[2]: BootCacheControl: could not unlink playlist /var/db
    /BootCache.playlist: Unknown error: -1
I've run Applejack for SystemCaches, and even though it clears some of the System Caches, including /private/var/db/BootCache.playlist , this doesn't resolve the problem. Only SafeBoot does. Thanks.

And, since it's the one cache I see in SB that might possibly be related, do you think I should check off "Rebuild the dyld shared cache?'
*Kurt Lang* Not sure. I've never looked to see exactly what type of cache information the dyld shared cache holds. There's a page here that shows the Terminal command and its arguments you can use to do it manually, but still doesn't explain what it is that's being removed/rebuilt.
Trying to track down the function of the dyldsharedcache which is automatically deleted (then re-created on re-boot ) with a Safe Boot in Leopard in versions 10.5.6 and after, to see if it is somehow implicated in Safe Boot being able to resolve the issue where the BootCache.playlist goes astray--even after rebuilding that particular cache--I came across this
The dynamic loader for Darwin/Mac OS X is called dyld, and it is responsible for loading all frameworks, dynamic libraries, and bundles (plug-ins) needed by a process.
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/releasenotes/DeveloperTools/RN-dyld/index .html
(This notes that in Snow, it doesn't get rebuilt upon restart after a Safe Boot)
I'm wondering if that BootCache.playlist in /var/db would be considered part of a "dynamic library," i.e. the dynamic library for the boot process.
If so, perhaps just rebuilding this single cache with Onyx would be what is needed to replicate what is being accomplished for this particular issue by using Safe Boot?

  • How does one do a Safe Boot?

My Hard Disk is balky, seems to overheat?
Dumb question: How does one do a "Safe Boot"
If I need to reinstall OS-X, how do I do that? I have Snow Leopard Install DVD, but I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Please excuse my low level of computer knowledge. Thanks

    1. Restart with the Shift key held down.
    2. Back up your data, restart with the Command and R keys held down, and run the Installer.

  • IMac randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7 (??)

Is anyone else having problems with their Mac (running a clean installation of OS X Lion 10.7) randomly booting into "safe boot" mode after a restart or shut down?
(Indicators being: seeing the login screen even when "automatic login" is enabled, the proper video drivers not loading - indicated by laggy desktop animations, WiFi not working properly, Menu Bar icons that normally show - not showing, etc.)
**Note: I migrated from a Snow Leopard Time Machine backup, but did not import "Settings". I thought this would be the best way to keep from encountering any issues with 10.6/10.7 incompatibility.

Found this answer from another user. THE EXACT THING HAPPENS TO ME:
Its really annoying Apple hasn't fix it.
    =================
    I think i got it :
The progressbar while booting ( booting in safe-mode ) came from the wireless keybord and is reproduceable.
At evening I shut down my iMac an put off my mouse and keyboard. To startup I put on the iMac and immediatly after I switch on keyboard and mouse. In tihs case the keyboards sends some event wich leads to safe-mode.
Know I wait until I switch on the keyboard. In my opinion this is a bug, i can live this way but i hope it will be fixed.
I will know take a look at it while not switching off the keybord, power consumption should be acceptable

  • OS X will not start in Safe Boot but it does start normally

I have not been able to install updates for TurboTax or Quicken; the updater hangs. Intuit customer support suggested trying to install them while the computer is in Safe Mode. Big surprise: it brings up the Apple screen and the spinner, but after a few minutes the computer shuts down.
It starts normally otherwise; just not in Safe Boot.

but after a few minutes the computer shuts down.If your computer shuts down when attempting a Safe Boot, this means the filesystem check is failing.
You need to boot from your Install CD/DVD by holding the "C" key down while you restart. When the Installer appears you need to select Disk Utility from the menus (which menu it is on varies, do a search).
You can then choose the "First Aid" tab, and click the Repair Disk button. If you are lucky, it will report that it fixed some errors, in which case run it again until it says there are no errors. But given that Safe Boot does this automatically, you are more likely to get an error that it is unable to fix—at least you will see what the error is, and can post it here.
You may need to invest in a third party Disk Repair program like DiskWarrior to fix this. But you must fix it before attempting to install anything else.

  • 1st-gen Mac Pro does not boot in any way, not even in safe mode

I have a 1st-generation Mac Pro with the graphics card upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; running 10.7.2. I have had no problems with the machine since I bought it in May 2007... until now. Specifically, the machine suddenly became non-responsive, froze (I do not remember this ever happening before), so I had to power it down and restart. After that, the machine does not boot in any way: does not start up with the Option key; no FireWire target mode; does not start up even in the safe mode. All I get when I power the machine up is the folllowing endless loop: (1) the display unit (30" Apple Cinema Display) waking up from sleep (white light going off) and (2) a flicker of white on the display while the optical drive sounds like checking for any inserted media... then again the display going to sleep for a few seconds and steps (1) and (2).
I could really use help here. Thank you in advance.

    Linc:
I am also sure it is a hardware fault. I have tried to run the Apple Hardware Test from the orginal system disc: I opened the optical drive tray with a paper clip, inserted the disc and powered up the machine. However the machine only spinned up the disc, turned the display to standby, spinned up and standby, etc.
What kind of hardware fault could it be?
    (1) the display unit (30" Apple CInema Display) -- I presume unlikely, since the computer should boot even with a defunct display unit or no display unit at all, for that matter;
    (2) the graphics card
    or
    (3) the logic board?
