Does Snow Leopard upgrade have the option to do a clean install?

If you buy the snow leopard upgrade, can you still erase and install over, say 10.4 or 10.5? If I have 10.5 can I wipe it out and just install 10.6 using the upgrade?

yes, you can. boot from the snow leopard dvd, use disk utility to erase the main hard drive and proceed with the install.

Does Snow Leopard use all the ram installed, 10 gigs in my case. Leopard didn't.

You should be OK with that much, however, besides the basic needs of the OS, it will depend on how many and which applications are open and how memory intensive they are. Someone might easily get away with 4GB and someone else might have trouble with 16GB.

    Thanks Dirk,
Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours

  • Iphoto 9.6 does not seem to have the option of customizing the background of a picture with a mat text etc it did in the prior version for printing. It there a way to have that option?

I updated from Snow leopard to Yosemite
I needed to update iPhoto 8 to the newest version iPhoto 9.6
the old version allowed me to customize my photo adding a mat  background colour text before printing
The new version 9.6 does not seem to have that option (that I used often)
Is it available and I just cannot seem to find it?
    I would appreciate help

For printing, you may want to download and install the BorderFX plug-in. It can add borders to a photo and watermarks and annotations when exporting from iPhoto.
You can download it here:  BorderFX - iBorderFX iPhoto

  • Update Flash after doing Snow Leopard upgrade

Just as an FYI: I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 this morning. Before the upgrade I had the latest version of Flash (10,0,32,18). After the upgrade I had an earlier one--I don't remember which one exactly, but it was something like 10,0,23,? or so. You can check your Flash version here:
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Anyway, be sure to update Flash after you do the Snow Leopard upgrade.

Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy.

  • Upgrading Boot Camp 2.1 to 3.0? Does Snow Leopard upgrade it?

On a Windows partition, does the Snow Leopard disk perform an upgrade on earlier versions of Boot Camp, or does it require the removal of the previous version of Boot Camp before the new installation?
I have not seen any clear direction from Apple on this.
I would appreciate any thoughts and experiences.
    Thank you very much!

  • HT201343 So if my iMac is more than 12 months old I can no longer use AirPlay?  This is ridiculous!!!  Do I have to go back to snow leopard to have the use of what I pay for?

I "upgraded" to Mountain Lion and lost the Airplay function.  My computer - iMac 2010 - is apparently to 'old' for this.
There must be a work around or the staff at Apple is not nearly as sensible as I thought.

    You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

  • Snow Leopard upgrade - reusing the key

I upgraded my Mac Book Air (MBA) with 10.6.2 from 10.5.8. Then because of some hardware issue I had to return the MBA back to apple. Since then I bought a new MBA which came installed with 10.6.2. My question is that can I use my OS disk to upgrade another Mac, not necessarily MBA, since it was used to upgrade OS previously on a machine which is no more in my possession.

If you are talking about the OS disk (gray label) that came with the first MBA then no, it will not work on a different model Mac. If you are talking about a Retail disk, then Yes, it can be used to upgrade another machine for you.

  • I don't have the option of installing a clean copy of Snow Leopard

I'm new to Mac and have been exploring different programs that would fulfill the same functions as the programs I had been using on Vista. Unfortunately, my computer got a little wonky somewhere along the way and I want to remedy it by erasing the hard drive and installing a clean copy of Snow Leopard. I've looked in my owner's manual as well as several websites online. They all tell me to select something either from a tab or an Options menu but there isn't one. When I reach the Select Destination window, I have the option to customize what is installed (i.e. Quicktime, Rosetta, etc.), go back and continue. Is it not possible or something???

it's possible but there is likely no need to do this. what exactly is wrong with your computer? a simple reinstall of snow leopard on top of your current system will cure many ills and will preserve your data and applications. and many problems can be solved without reinstalling at all.
but if you insist on doing a wipe and install boot from the SL install DVD and start disk utility from utilities menu at the top. erase your hard drive using the erase tab in disk utility. then quit disk utility and proceed with the install. and if you do reinstall I suggest you back up your data first. otherwise it will be completely wiped when you erase your hard drive. and you should always back up anyway.

  • How long does it take for the Snow Leopard upgrade to download

I followed directions to download the Snow Leopard upgrade from the App Store.  How long is it supposed to take?  It has been at it with no movement on the bar for over 45 minuted.  It says downloading on the icon.  I imagine that the server(s) have been slammed but...?

(4/3)*5 = 6.666 or you have 1.666 hours to go or 1 hour and 40 mins.  At that speed you're only getting about 1Mb/s which is pretty slow.

  • How do I upgrade an OSX leopard macmini to snow leopard - I have cd and CPU ready to go, but don't see an upgrade choice.

I have a macmini running Leopard. I need to upgrade it to Snow Leopard. I have my Snow Leopard in hand, but can't an upgrade choice anywhere. I rebooted holding down the c key - I thought this was the magic key for rebooting to bring up other options but no luck.
Once on Snow Leopard, I have the App Store purchased Lion to upgrade to, which is where I want to get this machine.
Can someone show me the error of my ways, please?

Wow that was a fast reply with a great answer!
So I just follow the bouncing ball as if it were a clean install and it knows to do only an upgrade? I'm only double checking because even though I actually made a new fresh backup.
Thanks very much for the help!

  • Trackpad Sensitivity Issue After Snow Leopard Upgrade

I have a Late 2008 MBP/2.53 Ghz and prefer to use tap to click/2 finger secondary tap.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard (to v.10.6.6 as a clean install), linked webpages and files/folders often open when a second finger touches the trackpad accidentally even when pressed very gently.
The same happens if a third finger touches the trackpad if I am scrolling through a page with 2 fingers. Sometimes when pausing/hovering over a link, part of the page surrounding the hyperlink will highlight and can sometimes the link will activate without any additional accidental touch. I have slowed down the tracking and double click speed in preferences, but this makes no difference.
The funny thing is, some days the problems are worse than other days, the trackpad seems to have a mind of it's own! These issues never happened with Leopard, and it is very frustrating.
Post SL upgrade, I have also noticed that the Magsafe adapter sometimes needs a little wiggle before it will start charging, and occasionally, the red 'close' symbol at the top left of the page does not always activate and I have to start tapping elsewhere before trying to close the page again.
My parents have SL installed natively on their MBP (Spring 2010), and their MBP does not encounter any of these problems.
Disk Utility shows Javavirtualmachine differences, which I trust can be ignored as the differences are non critical, or could these issues be having an effect on SL?
I have AppleCare which expires in November and I want this sorted out asap. I could just revert back to using Leopard, but as I have paid £30 for Snow Leopard it would be a waste of money.
I'm not sure whether my AppleCare cover these issues seeing as SL wasn't natively installed on the Mac when purchased?
If anyone can help with these issues it would be very much appreciated.
    Many thanks

After installing SL, i cannot get wellsfargo "account login" to work for any account of mine, other financial secure sites work fine, i.e. fidelity or vanguard, I can access the main screen of wellsfargo but login fails ... screen i get says Safari can't connect to the server and as follows: "Safari can’t open the page “https://online.wellsfargo.com/das/cgi-bin/session.cgi?" plus some more gibberish stuff.... i tried switching to firefox and it works fine .... never had any trouble before ..... tried safari reset, safari empty cache, and maintenace that applied ...... still no luck!! hope they get this bug fixed , my other computer an older mac mini works fine. any help????? never had any problem before SL
