Does Solaris 8 have a boot manager?

I would like to install Solaris 8 in a separate partition on a machine that already has Windows 98 in one partition, then be able to boot either Windows or Solaris. Does Solaris 8 have a dual boot manager, like lilo for Linux? I didn't see any mention of this in the installation docs.

WinNT / Solaris 8 dual boot - I have two drives on a Dell OptiPlex. WinNT is on the first drive and want to run Solaris from the second drive. After multiple successful interactive installs from the Solaris CD 1 of 2, I am still not able to boot to Solaris. I have tried Partition Magic v4.01 and System Commander as well as Solaris 8's boot manager. These attempts have resulted either in partitions that could not be managed by FDISK, WinNT Disk Admin, or Partition Manager or a corrupted boot sector.
I would like to have WinNT on the first HD (Disk 0) and Solaris 8 on the second HD (Disk 1). At this point I'd prefer to use WinNT's BOOT.INI file to point the boot sector to Solaris 8 on Disk 1, but regardless prefer not to have any Solaris partitions or its boot manager, if its is needed, on Disk 0.
Any help with this straightforward configuration is appreciated?

• Does Solaris have file size limination?

Dear Sir:
Does Solaris or other UNIX OS have file size limination ?
If yes, Please tell me
where the manual or any documents refered ?
Thanks Nicolas

Hi Nicolas,

SunOS and Solaris 2.3 through 2.5.1 support file sizes up to 2GB
in size. By size, it is understood that a file has with it, its
own overhead (inode information, etc.) so closer investigation may
reveal that the file in question is somewhat short of actually
being 2GB in size.
Solaris 2.6 has introduced the concept of largefiles.
A largefile, indicates a file that has a size between 2GB
and 1Tb (terabyte).

Here is a table of file and file systems limitations (for UFS)
depending on Solaris releases:

Single File File System
SunOS 4.1.x 2Gb 2Gb
SunOS 4.1.x + ODS 2Gb 1Tb
Solaris 2.0-2.5.1 2Gb 1Tb
Solaris 2.0-2.5.1 + SDS 2Gb 1Tb
Solaris 2.6 ~800Gb 1Tb
Solaris 7 ~800Gb 1Tb
Solaris 8 ~800Gb 1Tb

On Solaris 2.6 and upwards, have a look at the manpage for
largefile(5) or go to http://docs.sun.com and search for "largefile".

• Can someone explain what I am doing wrong? Windows Boot manager error.

Okay, I've literally searched EVERYWHERE and can not find a reasonable answer to this question.
Everytime I try to load windows on bootcamp, I get this error:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause . to fix problem:
1. insert windows installation disc and restart computer
2.choose your language settings, and then click "next"
if you do not have the disc, contact your system admistrator or computer manufacturer for assistence
status 0xc0000017
And that's it.
I have tried everything from usb to countless 8 gig DVD which I wasted from burning the ISO time and time again.
I am doing everything through the bootcamp installer and I partition up to 80 gigs of space of my hard drive for it.
This is an official iso image from windows btw.
I think it's a memory problem, but I am not sure. Here are my specs:

you really are way too low on memory, but that is not the issue.

bumbing is sort of like there are only so many people likely to read and try to help. give us a couple hours or more.
you say Windows, I ask "which?"
And really all the faq and how to and even guide should cover your bases.
Can only guess that the media you used to burn DVD or source.. see, we are not mind readers, some buy System Builder, or buy as a ISO download and burn to DVD... so start with the FAQs.

Use the Boot Camp Assistant. The assistant will partition your internal hard drives and install Windows 8. For more information on Windows 8 installation, see the Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide.
Can I use an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8?
Yes. Download and install the Boot Camp 5 Support Software before attemping the upgrade by using the Boot Camp Assistant in OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3. Alternatively, you can manually download the Boot Camp 5 Windows Support Software here.
When I do an upgrade install from Windows 7 to Windows 8, an "Uninstall USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver" message appears. What do I do?
Do not click on Uninstall. Click the back button and Cancel the upgrade. Download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software by using the Boot Camp Assistant in OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3, or click here to download them. Then, try the upgrade again. See this article for more information.

Yes, you can download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software here.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638
How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.
Note: If the flash drive or hard drive was not attached when you installed Windows and was inserted after restarting into Windows 8, double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file to start the installation of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. • HT201593 Itunes 12 does not have the "Manually manage music" option

I have itunes 12 and the "manually manage music and videos" is not there. "Manually manage videos" is the only option. I use itunes for work and I NEED a fix. I am unable to drag and drop as well.

Hello there, Jenks855.
When wanting to manually manage content on your iOS device, the Knowledge Base article you were referred from provides some great information and practical steps for troubleshooting:
Manage content manually on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod - Apple Support
Manually add items to your device
Connect your device to your computer.
Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
Choose the content that you want to add to your device from your iTunes library.
Drag the content to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. A panel should appear. Locate your device.
What if I can't manually add content to or remove content from my device?
To manually manage your content, check to make sure that the "Manually manage music and videos" option is turned on. Then:
Connect your device to your computer.
Open iTunes. Make sure that you have the latest version.
Locate and click on your device.
Click the Summary tab.
Click the box next to "Manually manage music and videos."
Click Apply. If you see a message that your device is synced with another library:
iPhone can only add music or video from a single iTunes Library.
iPad and iPod can add music from multiple iTunes Libraries, but video from only one iTunes Library.
If you choose to manually manage your movies and music with the new iTunes Library, the iTunes content currently on your device will be erased and replaced.
You can’t manually manage music while using iTunes Match on your device.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Pedro.

• Does Aperture have a movie management plugin?

Hi there,
I shoot a lot of small movies, along with photos, that I want to keep in the same folders. iView Media Pro did this nicely, but Microsoft took it over (renamed it as Media Expressions) and now seems to be letting it die. I've been told that neither of the obvious alternatives, Aperture or Lightroom, manages movie files, but someone recently pointed out that there's a plugin for Lightroom that does just this:
it's called 'Video-Asset Management plug-in'.
I'd prefer to stay with Apple, since I use a Mac, so I thought I'd see if there's a similar plugin for Aperture. Anyone know?
thanks, Malcolm

WOW such support . . .
The only import offered is “in place, without moving”.
can't do any editing (altho why would you want to in an IMAGE editing program.)
Subsequent changes to the video are not reflected in Lightroom.
and to top it off . . .
No export.
Ya . . . big support . . .

• Does somebody have experience to manage SAP project with solution manager?

Hi friends,
I will implement new project for my client. As I know, solution manager is already part of SAP Netweaver. To install SAP NetWeaver, solution manager must be installed. Meanwhile, solution manager provides a project management tool, for example, the business process definition, blueprint...
But I never use it to manage project. Could somebody share experience in this area?
Regards,

Hi Ragu,
Thanks for your posting. I will implement a SAP APO project. What I need is the methods to use solution manager, for example, configuration manual, step by step guide. I'm also interested in the advantages of SAP solution manager.

• Re: Installing Solaris 11.1 and multi-boot manager

Hi,
I have several problems too (I'm newbie on solaris) installing Solaris in multiboot environment ( I have 3 hard disks on this pc)
Does the grub2 of solaris 11.1 boot linux or not ? if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 can boot linux I think I will install the grub2 of solaris in MBR, I have already triyed this with bootadm install-bootloader -M but there was already a grub2-pc of linux installed and it did'nt
delete the grub2 of linux, so I think I must use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to install the grub2 of solaris
if the grub2 of solaris 11.1 doesn't boot linux I will do as you said with the chainload of solaris (how can I chainload solaris in a recent grub2 ?
in menu entry :
insmod part_msdos
insmod part_sunpc
insmod part_gpt
insmod zfs
set root='(hd2,gpt1)'
chainload +1
(this last point is not important because I have other ways to boot linux and Iprefer to install the grub2 of solaris)
I cannot retrieve my root pool when I boot from the text install CD ROM, zpool import -f rpool doesn't succeed, must I do something after an installation (is it possible to save the root pool on a big usb key ?),(I think I will post another thread for that...)
thanks for your answers

Can the grub2 of solaris boot linux?
I tried to install the grub2 of solaris after an installation but it doesn't delete the grub2-pc of linux, I think I should have use bootadm install-bootloader -fM to force the instalaltion in MBR
After that (it was my second unsuccessful installation) I have booted with the text install cdrom but the zpool import -f rpool didn't work, must I do something after an installation ? (should I save the root pool after my installation ? can I save the root pool on a big usb key?) I must perhaps post a new thread for this..

My laptop have refused to start up, it will just show windows boot manager on the screen, and me to choose an operating system to start or press tab to select a tool but when I tryed all those things none of it will respond

Thanks also Star 1. I have gone the route you suggest also but with the same results as I explained to the hatter. I have about a dozen die-hard Windows friends and they have been trying to help me also. We have tried everything and I have read a several pages on how to do it but nothing looks like what they are saying it does. When in Vista, Vista says it is the default SU OS. When in XP, XP says it is the default SU OS. So there is nothing to change. Only the Windows Boot Manager (which is really not a manager but a boot selector) shows Vista as default and XP next. I've learned again what I already knew. Windows is a conglomerated piece of crap that is hard as heck to use.

Does Endpoint Security Disk Encryption have pre-boot authentication? We looked at it in the past and this feature was not available. Thanks
Danny

No. ZESM only does post-login authentication for fixed disk and removable storage encryption.
If the windows user that logins does not know this password, the encryption driver will not decrypt the stored information. That's the way it works.
Best,

• Solaris wont boot after installing Smart Boot Manager

I installed Solaris 10 today. Everything was fine, but because i have 2 WXP installations on my 2 harddrives i have to install a boot manager. I always used Smart Boot Manager because it was simple and powerful. But after that if i try to run Solaris, the Solaris Booting System starts, everything is fine (except this that it doesnt see my keyboard) but then i get an error like this:
ERROR: system/filesystem/root:default cant mount /boot
and promts to type the administrator password. I uninstalled SBM and now everything is OK. But i cant boot my 2nd WXP install.
(my HDD's:
HDD1@SATA-0: (First boot device in my BIOS)
1) WXP

3) Solaris
4) NTFS
HDD2@PATA-0-Master (Second boot device in my BIOS)
1) WXP <- Active
2) NTFS)
Has anyone a workaround for this problem?

That seems to be a known issue that have been for a lot of time around with some combinations of X-Fi, mobo, and GPU...
This problem doesnt have any real solution at all... if you dont have a way to config in the bios the priority of video card, like what goes first for video PCI or PCI-E, that is the only way to fix it so far.

Launch Keychain Access and click on Login in the left hand pane and then on Passwords. Next do search for Apple in the search field at the top and click on Apple ID Authenicication in the list that comes up. That will give you the ID no. and password.

• Windows 8 does not have a USB boot option

QuestionHow can I boot my Windows 8 laptop from a USB device? I created a recovery disk on a USB thumb drive.
So far I have:
Entered into the UEFI (BIOS) and set USB to boot first.
Disabled secure boot.
I tried to reboot using the general setup options for startup in the windows settings page. I choose boot from USB through the UEFI, but got an error message that system does not have a USB boot option.
To confirm I also created a bootable DVD with an ISO burner, but my laptop cannot detect a DVD boot option either.
I assumed that the firmware of the UEFI for this computer allowed a bootable USB but in practice I cannot seem to get this work.
AnswerTo assist with not being able to boot from a USB device on a Windows 8 laptop, perform the following:
Plug in USB bootable device.
Hold down F12 when restarting and access UEFI menu (option is below drive list). If system is set to fast boot, CLICK HERE for instructions on entering the UEFI.
Go to UEFI and make USB "1st boot".
Disable secure boot.
Go to the "Advance" Tab, select "System".
Change boot order from UEFI to CSM.
Save changes and exit (F10).
Computer will restart and boot from USB drive.
When finished go back into the UEFI and set defaults then save changes and exit (F10). Windows 8 will reboot normally next reboot.

Done that, only choices are "Set up Firefox to Sync" & "Pair a Device". No ''UNLINK THIS DEVICE". Your turn.
