Does Spotlight "see" In-Design files?

Newspaper question- Editor ALWAYS has trouble searching for info (background) for stories he is writing. Info is contained in Word documents, some .doc, some .docx and for the last month or two, they are in-design documents. It is vital that he be able to keyword search from the contents of the document. One thing in particular that he was looking for today was in a .doc file but spotlight never found it. I am going to do all the different fixes that I have found listed in this forum about re-indexing and things.
I installed Google desktop and it appears to do a better job of looking, but still didn't find what he was looking for today.
I archive everything on an external drive. Is there a way I can make his searches default to the archive?
Anyone have words of wisdom?? He is losing lots of time looking for information.

Spotlight can only locate content if the application has metadata plug-in for the application's documents. Unless Adobe's InDesign installs a Spotlight plug-in you can only find a file, but not find content in the file. This is something you will need to check with Adobe. It definitely sounds like there is no plug-in for Spotlight.

  • Time Machine does not see original backup file on Time Capsuel after reset.

I recently moved. I have a Time Capsule which is also my airport base station. I have about 7 months worth of back-ups on the drive for an iMac and a MacBook. The local cable company would only hook up the modem directly to my iMac and would not set up through the Time Capsule as it is not one of their routers. No problem. I did it once -- I could do it again. After discovering that it was not as simple as plugging the ethernet cable into the Time Capsule (after doing so, the Time Capsule recognized it had internet feed -- the iMac recognized the Time Capsule/Airport network -- but I could not get onto the net.) I discovered that I needed to do a hard reset. The instructions said the files would not be erased. They were not. I can still see the original back-ups for both computers in finder. But Time Machine does not recognize that either computer was ever backed up. There is no history and when I try a back-up it begins from scratch and creates a brand new back-up file.
How do I get Time Machine to recognize the original back-up files? I tried "choosing disk" in Time Machine preferences but it only lets me choose the actual disk (the Time Capsule) and not an individual back-up file
Thanks in advance to the collective brain trust.

I saw a post on another discussion about this subject, and one user found this workaround:
    2) Start the backup via wireless connection. Stop the backup. Unplug external HD and plug in via USB or FW (you want FW800). Time Machine appears smart enough to continue your backup in a manner that is useable by the AEBS.
This only makes sense for the first backup (or if you have a lot of data for one particular incremental backup), as it removes the whole convenience factor of wireless.
    The post got this reply:
Thx for your #2 tip on using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Base Station, then switching to a wired connection. Worked perfectly.
Started the TimeMachine b/up wirelessly, allowed it to run for a couple minutes, then stopped it, unplugged the USB drive from the AEBS, plugged it into the computer directly via FW400, opened TimeMachine and it recognized the Disk. Ran TimeMachine via the wired connection, after it finished I ejected it, plugged it back into the AEBS, initiated the AirDisk in the finder, then opened TimeMachine and presto!!
Awesome tip. Note: this works for first-time TimeMachine wireless backups only. Saved me over 40 hours of wireless waiting!!

  • FTP does not see symbolic linked files

I have an FTP site the drive that it's on cannot hold all my files so I used symbolic link(ln -s filelocation/filename) them from another drive. When I ftp into the site (Windows or Mac) the the symbolically linked files don't appear. How can't make these files visible?

    Hi Gene,
I had the same problem with a symbolic link I placed into the "Movies" Folder, the links wasn't visible within Frontrow.
I solved the problem by selecting the symbolic link in the Finder and creating an Alias of this symbolic link. The new Alias pointed on the original directory with all required permissions and was visible through Frontrow. I could delete the symbolic link itself as the Alias pointed to the new place.
Should work in your case as well,
    Chris

  • Published Site Does Not Match Design File

I've published a website but it does not match the design file.  It's showing an older version that has since been changed and not sure why it's picking up something I've updated and saved over many times.  Thanks for any and all help.

And now I'm seeing a problem of a similar nature.  The design and preview show a smooth transition between all pages, but the published site shows the logo in the upper left "jumping" when I leave the home page.  I've checked the page properties between all of the pages and they seem to be set the same.  I am using only one master page for all of the pages.  Any ideas on why this would be occurring?  The website is jacksoncompany.net.

  • Easy Photo Print does not see Aperture files

I have a Canon MP640 printer, which gives me really poor results when used with Aperture (3.1.3) so I have been using the print software that came with my printer (Easy photo print EX).  The problem with Easy PhotoPrint, is that this software does not see my Aperture files, even though I have turned on the “View in finder” feature in Aperture.  Can anyone  tell me how to configure my system, so that Easy PrintPhoto will see my files, without having to export every time I want to print

Ahh ok, that function File->Show In Finder shows the current selection in the finder if it is a referenced image. That's all it does, it doesn't cause any permanent changes to any settings in Aperture or the Finder. Why you couldn't see your referenced files in the finder before clicking this and now you can is a mystery and a coincidence and will do nothing to enable other programs from accessing the images in the library.
As for turning off color management when you print from Aperture, in the print dialog under the Rendering section
when you open the Color Profile you can select  Printer Managed.
Once you set it to Printer Managed you'll see the warning change from Turn off in Printer to Turn on in Printer
Might be worth a shot if you haven't try it yet.

  • 60gb iPod does not see music files on my external HD

I'm going nuts trying to figure out why my iBook does not see the music files on my external HD.
I have a 250gb external hard drive (that I put together with an enclosure and HD I bought from Tiger Direct). I have the hard drive hooked up to my G3 iBook via Fire Wire. The HD comes up on the desktop, but none of the files are seen. Now, when I take the same HD and hook it up to my Windows PC, all my music is there.
I really don't want to have my iPod hooked up to my PC. My G3 is too small to hold all the music. I need to have the external HD to handle all the music for my iPod.
How do I accomplish this on my G3?
    Thanks!
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hyphen says:
[The] drive can be formatted as fat32 and be read/written by macs. He could also partition it, one partition as hfs+, the other as fat32. This can be done from disk utility.
The NTFS format (windows) has only read support for OS X.
How did s/he copy the music on the external drive? Was the music on his/her pc? If yes the hierarchy may be different for the pc version of iTunes library, or is it that he can't find the files even from the finder?
    And Red Dwarf adds:
Just to add to hyphen's reply, FAT32 has a maximum size of 32GB. The user cannot make the partition larger than 32GB should they decide to go down that route.
Another alternative is a utility called TransMac. When installed on a PC, it will allow the PC to recognise a Mac OS formatted drive and read the files within. No need then to worry about all that FAT32 and NTFS malarky stuff. It weighs in at $64 dollars though for a 1-3 user licence:

So hopefully, with Kappy's help, too, you will be able to figure it out.
    Good luck.

  • HT201269 itunes cannot see my iphone backup.  I have a backup of the backup on an external HD, but even tech support cannot figure this one out.  I copy and paste backups into the correct folder but itunes still does not see it.  All I need are my contact

Sorry for short novel I am writing.  I just wanted to cover as much backround as possible.
So, here it goes.  I backed up my iphone 4 after renting a movie.  The movie only played the starting credits before I was called on for daddy duty.  A few days later the movie would not play, so I restored my phone from my backup.  The movie would still would not play so itunes support refunded my purchase and ended my viewing privileges for that rental after verifying that I had not viewed the movie.  I then had a problem with my contacts showing up twice in the contacts list after the restore.  So I attempted another restore.  All was well at this point.  I then started having trouble with my pc and decided to copy the internal drive to an external source.  A week later I had a system failure and did a factory restore on my computer.  I re-installed itunes and tried to copy and paste the old backup into the new itunes.  Now itunes just flat out does not see the backup file (I failed to mention that I did a factory reset on the iphone after the last backup, hopping to start fresh).  Tech support had me uninstall and re-install itunes and then copy and paste the old backup into the newly installed itunes with no luck.  The files are all there, but itunes just doesn't see them (itunes says the device has not been backed up to the cloud or to the local machine).  We then tried backing up the factory restored iphone and replacing that restore file with one of my old backups on the external drive.  Ok, this is where it gets weird.  We replaced the guts of the folder but left the folder itself so itunes would continue to recognize the new backup folder with the old files.  Whoohoo, itunes now see's a backup folder full of old files, or so we thought.  The new files were deleted using shift delete so they would be gone for good and not mix with any files or folders.  When I restore my phone, it restores the files that were deleted from the restore file (pause here for a moment and imagine the stupid look on the face of tech support and I while we silently wonder how files that were permanently deleted were restored).  This left tech support and I both scratching our heads.  My service issue was escalated to the next level.  I waited for the phone call the next day that was scheduled at 10am to my wife's phone, but the call never came through.  As usual, apple disappoints again.  I just bought an iphone 5s and still have the iphone 4, and am looking for a solution to retrieve my contacts and restore to the 4 or 5s.  I am guessing that files in other folders must be associated with the iphone backup in order for itunes to retrieve the files.  Any ideas or support in retrieving my contacts would be greatly appreciated.

  • DW 4 not seeing GoLive .site file!

I have several sites created in GoLive 7. I downloaded the GoLive 9 free trial, brought them over into GL9. Then I did the "Convert Site to New Structure" command as I have seen suggested. Downloaded the GoLive to DW migration extension and installed it. So far so good.
But when I go to Import GoLive Site, and navigate to the folder where the site file is (there are actually several, only one is the current one), Dreamweaver does not "see" the .site files, even though when I look in the window in explorer, they are there. All I see are the web-content, web-data, and web-settings folders, but no .site files at all.

This is an issue that I have never come across before. You're
    using a
non-standard filename extension, so it doesn't particularly
    surprise me
that Dreamweaver ignored it. Have you tried entering
    .properties in the
list of filename extensions, as I suggested? If that works,
    your problem
is solved. All that's needed is for the documentation to be
    made more
    explicit.
On the other hand, if your filename extension is likely to be
    in
widespread use, perhaps it's something that should be added
    to the
standard list of files that Dreamweaver handles. Submit a
    feature
    request to the Dreamweaver team.

  • Elements 11 not seeing/downloading RAW files.  HELP!!!

    Hello,
Just got Elements 11 and when I put the card into my pc the download box pops up and it reads the card, but it does not see the raw files, only the jpg files. If I use windows explorer to view the card it sees the raw files fine. I can open raw files from the card into elements 11 editor fine. It just will not see the raw file in the downloader box. I had Elements 7 before 11 and it worked fine.
I have windows 7 and Elements 11 is updated to the latest version.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    David

    Thanks for the reply.
Thats right, not seeing any raw thumbnails. If I just have raw files on the card and put it into the PC's card reader or a USB exturnal card reader all it says is"This divice does not have any supported media". It will show the jpg and tif files. It's a really weird problem. Elements 7 worked fine. All my cameras are old, D700, D3, D300s, D1x so it's not a problem being a new camera thats not supported yet.
I'll try the organizer way and see if it works or I may just use the Nikon transfer software.

  • Does FCP X accept mts files?

    Hi,
Does FCP X accept mts files? If not, do the Apple programmers have a plan to do so soon so we don't have to transcode them anymore? What other files does FCP X accept, not accept? I thought that FCP X takes all sorts of files. Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Jordan
    iMac 27", 3.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, FCP X

    Hi Tom,
I have tried everything including putting the card back into the Sony NX5U camcorder to no avail. I still get the error message, ""Such file contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
Brand new iMac 27" 3.4Ghz i7, Lion 10.7.3, 12 GB RAM, FCP X 10.0.3, Card in side slot of iMac, Card in card reader, Card in Sony NX5U camcorder, recorded as MTS files on a SDHC Sandisk card 30MB/sec class 10 card.
One other thing, I also tried to import MP4 files from a JVC GY-HM700U camcorder to no avail. I get the error message again. Even Clipwrap does not see the MP4 files. Huh?
Finally, what native files does FCP X accept that are not Quicktime files? I'm puzzled.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

  • Can not see the design view nor the java file in CentOS

Hi all. I've recently installed JSC2 in CentOS. I find this tool really useful. But I have a problem with the design view and the java file view. At the beginning, when I first create a Page1.jsp, I can see the design view and the java view with no problem. I run apps correctly. But after a while, I get a "null pointer exception" error and I am able to see only the jsp view, not the others. I don't even have the option to see the Design and Java views. And the page icon in the project window appears to be darker than a well working page. I'm not really sure what sequence of actions I do to get this error, it just suddenly happens. What I've done so far in JSC2 is to link to pages in the Page Navigation view. It works fine for a while, but after a while I get the error I've described.

Yes, if I do that It happens the same. I've tried everything. Now I'm using Window$ 2000 and it works properly. Thanks anyway.

  • XSLT Mapper file does not open in design view

XSLT mapper file in the composites exported from weblogic EM as a jar and imported in JDeveloper 11.1.14 does not open in design view. There is no option of design view itself in the tab structure. It is viewable only in source view.
Please suggest, how do I view the desgn view of the xslt mapper?
    Thanks,
    Promiit

When you export composites from Weblogic EM in jar format, the resulting files are differently formatted from what was used for deployment.
So, basically, the XSLT file, you are trying to open in Jdeveloper has lost the "mapSources" and "mapTargets" sections, which are generally present in the header section of the jdeveloper-generated XSLT file. Try to manually hand-crack those sections and you should be good to go.
    Hope it helps !
