  • Best software for doing full backups to ext. hard disk to to be used to restore system

As a new PC owner I wanted to find out what the best software for doing full backups to external hard disk,  to to be used to restore the system if primary primary disk crashes. Im aware that Windows, Acronis and Paragon all have software that doing varying degress of back and resore functions.

    lasvideo,
My favorites are ShadowProtect to do an "image backup" of boot drive and Beyond Compare for backing up files for all other "data" arrays. ShadowProtect does not seem to have much market share compared with Ghost and Acronis, but I really love it.
    What I like about ShadowProtect:
    - Extremely fast (complete image backup for 61GB of files on my boot SSD RAID 0 array to a RAID data array takes less than 3 minutes)
    - Can do image backups across a LAN; restores from boot CDROM and USB device
    - Allows for backups from one controller and restore of OS on a different controller and/or RAID configuration (has HAL tools; Hardware ? Layer I think)
    - Can "mount" an image backup as a drive letter and see (and copy) all directories, files, etc. that are contained in the archive
What I like about Beyond Compare:
    - Can choose what to backup and what to ignore very easily (for example you can set it to ignore certain files or directory names to ignore and then save how you set things up as a "session")
    - Only needs to copy over files that are new or have changed since your last backup
    - Makes it very easy to selectively delete files from your backup
    Regards,
    Jim

  • Does the Lenovo G510 have

I know my Wifi card is in a PCI slot but I wanted to know does the Lenovo G510 have have a Expansion Card Slot: 1X Half Mini PCI Express Slot?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi rosscarnie,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
This model only has 1 Mpcie slot and it is already occupied by the wifi card.
If you are aiming for using an SSD on the mpcie slot
You can either replace the wifi card with an MSATA SSD or replace the HDD with a 2.5 SSD

  • Support for 200 GB hard disk?

I recently bought a new hard disk, WDC200JB (Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB 200Gb 7200rpm Special Edition (8Mb cache) UDMA100 IDE).
I have Windows XP with Service Pack 1 on my computer.
I already have a similair hard disk but it's only 80 Gb big. That is my master disk. I set the new one (200 Gb) to slave. When I started my computer, Windows found the hard disk and installed it, but I cannot see it in the "My computer" window. The only way to look at it is in the "Device Manager".
So I need to get a way to format it. When I press the Populate button in the Device Manager, it makes the disk show 137 Gb, but when I press Ok, this information vanish and is gone when I look there again.
So, my question: Does my mother board support such a large disk at 200 Gb? I need to know this so I can go on finding out what's wrong. But on the MSI homepage, when I look at the description of my mother board, it doesn't say anything about how large disks it supports. How do I get this information?
    This is my motherboard:
    Microstar K7T266 Pro KT266A 5PCI 1AGP 3xDDR UDMA100 Audio SocketA ATX
This is the product link to my motherboard: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.aspmodel=K7T_266_PRO&class=mb
    Really need help, thanks...

Just to be sure, go to bios and set everything to default. Save and exit. See if you can now see the hdd in the bios.

    Hi again sparkie1984,
I am glad that my earlier comments were helpful.
Obviously the Caviar Green access times would be slower than the Caviar Black, because the former is a 5,400rpm model.
However, having said that, the following review reports that "it still manages access times we'd expect from a 7,200rpm model", and gives it a 4.5 star rating:
    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/storage/hard-disk-drives-h dd-/western-digital-caviar-green-2tb-587195/review
An earlier review also says much the same:
    http://www.trustedreviews.com/storage/review/2009/01/27/Western-Digital-Caviar-G reen-2TB/p1
Other reviews which might be of interest:
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/hard-disks/252151/western-digital-caviar-green-2t b
    http://review.techworld.com/storage/310352/western-digital-caviar-green-2tb-wd20 eads-review/
    http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/miscellaneous/western-digital-caviar-green-2tb-wd20 eads/po3-69735271,2/
The Caviar Green 2TB is currently available from Amazon UK for £142.76, with free delivery, which seems to be a competitive price, and is over £80 cheaper than the Caviar Black 2TB.
For more info on the differences between the 2 drives see:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=773
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=733
    According to Western Digital:
The Caviar Green is ideal for "Environmentally friendly PCs and external storage requiring lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation".
The Caviar Black is ideal for "Power computing applications such as multimedia, video and photo editing, and maxed out gaming computers".
So it is really a matter for you to decide whether the Caviar Green meets your criteria or not.
If in doubt, I would "dig deep in my purse" for the extra to buy the Caviar Black.
By the way all my WD drives are quiet in operation. Even the 10,000rpm VelociRaptors, whose "whirring away" is only really noticeable at start-up.
Whatever you decide, I hope that you are happy with your choice.

  • Does 24/7 operation shorten hard disk life - or not?

Does 24/7 operation shorten (external) hard disk life - or not?
I need to know. Disks keep dying.

Various Macs Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Does 24/7 operation shorten (external) hard disk life
    - or not?
That's a question that has been asked over the years so many times that by now you'd expect there to be a consensus on the right answer - but of course there isn't.
The answer comes down to whether or not the wear rate on the bearing is higher with steady-state constant running with continuous thrust forces and temperature, or with the varying thermal and pressure loading caused by spin up/spin down cycles. So much depends on small differences in materials and tolerances that it would probably be impossible to give an answer that is right for all drives in all situations.
What can be said is that in a purely theoretical sense, a bearing and thrust face capable of carrying the load of full speed, steady-state operation, will wear slower than the same bearing and thrust face subjected to varying loads and temperatures - conditions where not only is wear much higher, but patterns of wear more likely to cause the bearing to fail. But how these two conditions relate to each other is as much about the operating temperature in steady-state, the tolerance of the bearing/thrust face and the number of spin down/up cycles the drive would go through in what period of time.
I've got several system that run 24/7, including two PPC minis, both with Seagate drives. The older one is 26 months old and running perfectly. I've also got a G4 powermac with 3 internals which runs 24/7 and has done since it was new in late 1999. The original drive failed in 2001 and the replacement, along with the two others, has run constantly since with no problems. The original was a Quantum, the replacement was a Maxtor and the other two are Seagate. On my experience I'd say that constant running hasn't caused any sign of distress on these systems.
It has generally been my view that with competently designed components and systems, continuous steady state operation should result in lower mechanical wear and less risk of thermal stressing. If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say that the higher internal temperatures in the mini may render that a little more marginal than for larger systems, but that shouldn't impact on external drives unless poorly manufactured. I would also say that since laptops in general have no significant history of drive failures despite their far higher temperatures, there's more chance that you're the victim of bad luck that poor choice of operating regime!

  • Pxie 8108 does not boot with new hard disk

    Hi
    I'm currently using PXIe 8108 with PXIe-1062Q.
The previous hard disk was borken so I had to install a new hard disk.
The new hard disk is fommatted as NTFS format, and it is currently mounted on 8108.
Unfortunately I don't have recovery disk avaialble so I'm trying to install Windows 7 on empty hard disk.
When you boot, the PWK OK LED light is on all the time, DRIVE orange LED is on for few seconds only when I turn the switch on.
Labview RT switches are all off, I cleared CMOS many times from the board but, the screen shows nothing.
I have tried use my DVI monitor with other device as well, and it worked so there is no problem with the monitor.
In addition, I tried to go to window safe mode by pressing F8 or Del it didn't work, so I see nothing on the screen when its booted up.
I tried to put as much information I can it will be very appreciated if you can help me with this issue please.

You said you can't get into Windows safe mode, have you installed Windows on the hard drive?  Are you able to get into the BIOS for the controller?
If you aren't able to access the BIOS for the controller, it may be due to bad RAM.  If you are comfortable installing RAM and you have some extra laptop RAM of the same type (I think it's DDR3 for your controller) laying around, you can try swapping out the RAM.
Was your hard drive damaged through some event, or did it just stop working?

  • Support Lenovo G510

    Hy
I'm a proud user of several Lenovo laptops which did't give me any problems in the past.
Now I've purchesed a new laptop G510 (i7, 2,2 GHz, 8GB RAM) which is giving me a headache. I cannot install Graphic card with Lenovo drivers, because I always get the code 14 error in the Device manager window.
    Hardware ID of graphic card:
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6604&SUBSYS_380B17AA&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6604&SUBSYS_380B17AA
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6604&CC_038000
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6604&CC_0380
By the ID above I would think that there is Radeon HD 8600, but in the computer seller specification it say's the graphic card is ATI Radeon R7 265, DDR3, 2GB.
I've tried to install the drivers for both and they both get installed but there is code 14 problem. Now I have R7 drivers installed and graphic card is blocked by windows (code 14).

  • Is there a maximum size (on 2TB hard disk) for iTunes folder?

I have a large music collection which I am converting and storing on my hard drive in iTunes.  Is there a limit to how much music I can store without iTunes becoming buggy?  I already have 1TB stored and will probably finish at around 1.5TB.  Does anyone know of any problems with storing this much information (music files AIFF only) Thanks

My library just crossed 350K songs on ~3TB Firewire and no problems except as what whay Limnos mentioned with the speed issue.  I recently upgraded my RAM to 8GB which helped with this.
FYI - There are a few of us with large libraies that have had a strange intermittent permission issue after upgrading to Lion. https://discussions.apple.com/message/17623936#17623936 . Solution is to dsiable local snapshots taken by Time Machine.  All there in the thread in case you run into this,

  • Time machine does not find my external hard disk.

is this because it is formatted ms-dos. it has been this way since i've had it and have used it to manually back up photos and other things, which worked fine. i see back up folders on there but time machine does not recognize it as its back up. can anyone enlighten me.

Your external HDD needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) for Time Machine to use it as a backup destination. You can move your current data off the drive and format it via Disk Utility.
You mentioned there are TM backup folders. Curious that you cannot access them. How are you trying to access them? Are you using the TM interface or viewing it via Finder?

  • Hard disk replacement program

I just received an email from Apple saying that my iMac hard disk needs to be replaced urgently.  I made an appointment with the Genius on coming Sat.  I have some questions about the replacement and seeking the advice with other people who has got similar experience.
    1.  Does Apple replace my old hard disk with a brand new hard disk only?  If so, it gives me very painful exercise to re-install all the softwares.
    2.  Can they clone my old hard disk with the new hard disk to save my lots of hassle?
    3.  In my hard disk, I have a partition for BootCamp with Windows 7 OS.  Do I need to re-install it completely as I believe Apple will not touch other OS?
On one hand, I am very impressive with Apple reliable and responsible service and on the other hand it will interrupt my usage of iMac for sometime.  I am seeking the advice from other experience hands.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    1. I would not consider it for one use only. I update my clones regularly to have a good backup in case I have a problem with my hard drive (I actually have a problem with it right now). I use that as a backup.
    2. Yes, you need either CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) or SuperDuper (SD) to create a bootable clone on another drive. I prefer a bootable clone; however, you could also use Time Machine which is included in the OS (not bootable though) - I choose not to use that and rely on my clones. If your hard drive has a problem, you can boot with your clone and keep working/troubleshooting your hard drive.
    3. Absolutely: FW800 is much faster than USB 2; I try to avoid USB2 as much as I can - too slow. (I have not tried the new USB 3, so that may be faster, but I can't compare something I haven't tried).
    4. Well, on that I hope someone else will answer here - I do not run anything Windows, so I don't know what to say here. Just in case - if you want it only for the Mac, you would format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the GUID Partition scheme. You could also go to Support (at the top of the page) and search for Windows articles; another place to check is your Help section in Utilitites > Disk Utility > search for Windows > I just did that and got a full page of how to format a disk for Windows.

  • Time Capsule dies when hard disk engages

I have an older-ish 500GB TC and for the last year or so it has been hit and miss on start up. After plugging and unplugging a few times it usually fires up. Now, I am unable to get it to fire up.
The issue seems to come from when the hard drive tries to spin. I can hear it. This has always been the problem. It seemed like the hard drive needed to warm up and after a few times it would and I'd be fine. Now, it goes black at the point of it trying to start up.
Is it 100% a hard drive issue? Why doesn't the wireless still work? Why does it go black?
    To reconfirm:
I am able to plug it in and get a green light.
    The light goes orange.
After a few seconds I can hear the hard drive (or something) try to spin or engage.
    Then the light goes black.
Any help? Advice? I don't mind trying to rip it apart and stick a new hard drive in it. That's fine. I just want to make sure that is exactly what the problem is.
I know you geniuses can help me.

LaPastenague....who repairs many Time Capsules is our resident expert on this. Stay tuned for his response.
Yes,, Bob is right on .. as he is a pretty smart Mac user..
The hard disk is overwhelming the power supply at start up due to its high initialisation current. The power supply simply shuts down as it cannot provide enough current. It could also indicate a hard disk on the way out. The 500GB drives are finally starting to fall over. After 4years in the hot dark insides of the TC it is amazing they still go at all.
Your TC needs a replacement power supply.. I have done a number of articles about how to fix or replace it.
The economics of doing so are probably questionable.. it is really time for new one. They are cheaper than before, with dual band simultaneous wireless .. faster processor and much larger 2TB hard disk. So $300 for a new one, is not bad. (3TB is not good value IMHO).
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
Actually your TC should be dead these 2years.. when most of them started failing.
Do an ebay search for Time Capsule power supplies.. there is a guy in HK selling new Gen1 Delta power supplies.. I don't know where he got them from.. but they are superior supplies cf the flextronics most of them use. He is selling for $50 which is cheaper than I can do refurbished ones. Apple themselves make no parts available.
