Does syncing only use desktop internet connection?

I have  6.1 windows XP on my Palm treo pro. When syncing I wondered whether it uses my mobiles internet connection as well as my desktops internet connection. When reading about syncing it implies that only the desktop is being used. Can I confim this is the case so I am not paying for useage on my mobile.
Also I keep setting my data connection from the comm manager OFF but it comes back on if I accidentally connect to an internet page. I think I was advised that a choice should be given by my phone as to whether I wanted to connect or not. Instead it connects to the internet automatically. Then when you go to the comm manager it shows the data connection has switched back ON again of course. I wanted to stop my phone connecting initially and be given the choice if I wanted to connect. If I cannot do this then is there a setting that will at least stop the connection to the net. I have looked through all the phone help menus for my palm treo pro and cannot find how its done?
Thanks very much.

Thanks Jeffro thats seems like a great idea. I decided to look for a different option before using your method. I seem to have got into more of a pickle unbelivabley. I did manage to disable the internet but cannot work out how on earth to re-enable it now.  I did the following to stop the orange network connection. I went first into setting>connections>set up my proxy>modem. This shows NAME and underneath -ORANGE network . I pressed and held the touch screen over the word ORANGE to access the short cut. It gave an option to add or delete. In my lack of wisdom I decided to delete this. It stopped the internet but there seems no way to re-enable back to orange which I'd assumed you could do. I of course prefer your idea from the comm manager settings given it could then be re-enabled in theory.  I started  by  re-enabling the data connection which said ON but gives no net connection now since deleting Orange as explained above. So I cannot now try Jeffro's idea in above's post.  Does anyone have a treo pro to help me out on this to re-enable the orange internet? . Its turing into a Nightmare!  hope someone can help. Shall I contact orange or palm maybe? I don't think palm support the treo pro though as its an older phone, may be they do still? Can orange re-enable my phone from there end without me manually correcting something in my phone settings?
I apologise for all the questions seems everything is going pear shaped. Does anyone use the TREO PRO if so can they take pity on my post and help - thanks!! and thanks Jeffro for the help so far.
By the way I found this other post from 2008 for when I do eventually, somehow? , get my connection back. I think this is what Jeffro was saying and i will eventually implement when back on the net -

Yes, either 3G or wifi, depending on the connection available.

  • Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Have you set up any security on the Mac Connection Sharing?
Sorry but I don't use that so I'm not familiar with the settings.
But if you haven't setup and security the iPhone might not mind but I know most Windows computers do not like to connect to Open WiFi. and make sure it is WPA or WPA2.
Then again it may be a setting in the connection sharing like some type of MAC filtering or it may simply be that Mac OS X connection sharing only allows one connection at a time. Try disconnecting your phone and then connect the PC.
As to Linc's response about Windows.
Windows basically does care about connecting to open, unsecured, WiFi. But it will normally pop up a windows asking "Are myou sure you want to connect to this open network". And a simple click on yes will get you connected and an IP address.
So this is clearly a Mac OS X problem.

  • Does AppleTV really need an internet connection

Just a quick question - does AppleTV really need an internet connection. I am really struggling with the same syncing problems that many people describe on these forums. AppleTV will show on my devices now and again, it tries to authorise with iTunes, syncs for a while and as long as it is connected and showing in the device list I can view any of my movies, TV programs or music on my AppleTV.
But for some unknown reason the Apple TV fails to sync properly, disappears from the devices list and then tells me that there is no content stored on my AppleTV. Very frustrating as you can imagine. Everything checks out - I have good signal strength, can browse the iTunes store and Youtube but the syncing just isn't working.
I have read about problems with the BT Home Hub that I am using for my wireless network and despite taking the recommend steps to open the relevant ports on the hub to allow my AppleTV and computers to talk to each other properly I encounter the same problems.
As a solution I was thinking that I could buy a wireless router and create a network that is separate from the network that I have for the internet and try syncing through that. I don't really want to spend money on a new router unless it is likely to solve the problem.
    What do you think?

Thanks for all the comments guys.
Latest update: I decided to try it and have had some success. I acquired a basic Netgear wireless router and set it up in isolation from my BT Home Hub network. I used the basic settings wizard and let it do it's thing.
The AppleTV does show in my devices list however it does disappear randomly every now and again. Syncing has worked although for some reason I can only sync one item at a time - leaving me to have to repeatedly hit sync on iTunes, which is irritating but much less than not being able to sync anything at all. I have since dedicated my old iBook to the new network to act as my media machine.
Conclusion: I'm not sold on this as a solution but as I'm not bothered about accessing the internet through AppleTV it suits me for now. I just wish that I had not bothered with AppleTV and just got a MacMini. For all the hassle and the usability issues I would gladly have paid the extra £200 or whatever.
When it works the AppleTV is great but when it doesn't I just want to throw it out of the window.

  • How to use desktop internet in iphone using usb cable

I want to use my desktop internet connection in iphone using usb...if it is possible then let me know the way...

Not possible. The USB connection only allows for data transfer between the computer and the device, it cannot function as a gateway to the Internet.

  • Connect 2 Computers remotely using different internet connections

I want to connect 2 Mac, or PC and Mac remotely using different internet connections and my main purpose is to see the Desktop screen of one computer from another computer. Like my home computer I want to connect with my Job computer. Actually I have connected WebCam at my Home computer & I want to see the dektop of my home computer from Job computer.
So, please let me know if you know any software for the solution.

There are numerous implementations of VNC that will work cross platform between Windows and Macintosh. The built-in Macintosh remote desktop is based on VNC.

  • Hi my airport router ( ateast i think this is where the problem originates) has been turning off intermittenly for the past week, when it does this NO devices recieve internet connection, mac, pc,iphone, ipad, wireless or hardwired directly to the router

Hi my airport router ( ateast i think this is where the problem originates) has been turning off intermittenly for the past week, when it does this NO devices recieve internet connection, mac, pc,iphone, ipad, wireless or hardwired directly to the router. However they all show to be connected with their corresponding bars and the ip's are all fine. Earlier today it started flucuating on and off about every 5 min making work impossible and now it seems to be completely broken (im currently on my iphone connected though its own internet) Does anyone know how or ehy this happened and how i can fix this? And to know if this originates from the router or something else entirely. Thank you!

Hi - some clarifications would help narrow down some symptoms - just what has been turning off? - has the light been solid green but the modem isn't providing wi-fi? - or is the light flashing yellow with no internet? - which can mean several things - does the light go out completey? - so if you can report on exactly what is happenening and when, maybe someone can help you - we also need to know if there any error messages along the way -  we also need the types of devices involved and how they are attached - kind of like a nework map  - the more info that you provide, the more answers you will get.

        lovethoseleaves,
Oh no! I am saddened to hear that you are having troubles with your MMS pictures. I know that this can be an important thing to be able to do. I appreciate you working with us to get this matter resolved as well. I see that you have spent time working with us, and I know that can also be frustrating. There are a few things we can check though. Are these to any specific numbers or all? A factory reset certainly should've resolved this. We can check into the account set up as well for that if need be. Please share any additional details that you can think of. Thanks.

    Hi Theo,
There are several ways to implement this using simple timing features of LabVIEW.  Two fairly simple methods are comparing system time stamps or using the Wait VI provided in the Timing palette.  The time stamp comparison requires a little bit more programming, but can be included in your main program loop.  To use the Wait function, you will probably need to construct a new loop parallel to your main loop.  I have attached screenshots of these two implementations.  Please let me know if you have any more questions.

  • HT201469 Does Apple Pay require an internet connection in time of purchase?

I'm curious Does Apple Pay require an internet connection in time of purchase?
For example if you are traveling outside of the country and you are in the roaming area and you need to pay with your phone in the store - what will happen if you don't have internet connection?

    Thanks for the response Chris,
I'm leaning towards that direction myself...  The last line of the log exerpt above is:
Error #2032: Stream Error. URL: http://123.456.789.0:8080/guides/framework_4.5.0.21746.swz
So it does seem it's trying to fall back to a local copy, which I know exists, but clearly can't be accessed from that machine.  What doesn't make sense to me if this is the case, is that the user can browse to Workspace on that IP, login successfully, manually start a process, but then it's the guide that fails.  So the connection between the browser and LC exists and is working, it's just this framework that wont fetch!
Anyway, still doing more testing on this - will keep you posted.
    Thanks,
    K.

  • can I connect to desktop using a internet connection with laptop

When traveling with my laptop, can I connect to my desktop at home, using a wireless connection and the internet?

    This article:
    http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=18585&version=6330&pageID=1582 9
depending on your experience level should tell you all you need to know.
You don't need mobile me, you just need to know your mac's ip and have vnc
client software of some sort running on the machine you are travelling with.
Read the entire article, as once you get past the part about monitoring multiple machines there is some useful info.

  • Only using WiFi for connecting to the internet

I'm hoping to get a Pay & Go iPhone in January. O2 provide unlimited browsing for the first year, but after that you have to pay £10 per month, or you can opt out. I would want to opt out, and just use the internet in free WiFi hotspots (like College, for example).
Do any applications (like Mail, for example) use the internet of their own accord, or will I only be charged if I actually use them (outside of a WiFi hotspot)?
Furthermore, is there a way of disabling internet access over 3G, EDGE, and GPRS?
    Thanks,
    Will

The answer to all your questions is no. Unless you put the phone in Airplane mode it will use whatever data connection is available - so if you are on wifi and it hiccups, you will use GSM/Edge.
If you open mail, safari, maps, weather or anything else, it will try to do a data connection and it doesn't care what is available.
Some carriers will put a data block on the phone - at least in the US, and they way the phone will NOT do data over GSM/Edge/GPRS. I am not sure if O2 offers this, but you can ask. Just make sure to ask if Texting (SMS) is still available if you care about that.
10 pounds per month is about half what we pay in the US.

  • Location service only after initial Internet connection possible?

I have been to Budapest, Hungary last year. My iPod Touch 2G could not find my position although there were tons of WIFI networks around. I found an open hotspot in a café which was run by the town council. After connecting to it (and later without any Internet connection again) iPod found my possition at any place in the town. It was the same in another (German) town: I needed a short internet connection via a free hotspot to get the location service work.
Does the iPod download some sort of location data when I am far away from home?

Yes, you'll need to join a WiFi network before the location service will work properly. See this article for more interesting info about location service. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1975
    ...Notes:
iPod touch only uses Wi-Fi for Location Services (if a Wi-Fi network is available)...

  • Apple TV Sync Kills My Entire Internet Connection

    Hi,
This is a hard problem to diagnose; I'm hoping that someone will have experienced it as well, and may proffer a fix.
I have a Linksys 802.11b/g wireless router that works fantastically. I have an Apple TV and a MacBook, all connected via the router. The problem I experience happens whether or not the Apple TV is connected via ethernet cable or wireless to the router.
When my MacBook goes to sync with the AppleTV; when it is sending a movie, let's say, to the AppleTV box, my entire internet connection slows to a crawl.
If I catch and cancel the transfer within the first minute or so, there is no problem. But if I don't catch it, and it gets more than a minute or so into it, I find that not only does the internet connection slow, but in order to recover connectivity, even if I cancel the movie transfer, I have to unplug and reset the router.
Anyone have any ideas what might be happening here? I've got the router flashed to the latest firmware, I believe.
    Any suggestions?

For whatever reason you may be overloading your main router, which is also controlling your internet connection. You may want to try adding another switch or router upstream of the main connection router. Then make sure the Apple TV and you computer are connected to the downstream router/switch. This will allow the syncing traffic to stay off the main router.

  • App Store does not load & kills the internet connection

    Hello I'm currently using MBP 13' 2011 v. 10.7.2.
App Store window pops up after opening, but nothing actually shows up. It shows as if it is trying to load the App Store with the spinning indicator, but the app remains empty. Not only it does not load, it also kills whatever internet connection I've attempted on Safari. YouTube videos stop loading once App Store opens, for example.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
