It is absolutely possible to install and use a SSD with your ThinkPad. You need a SSD in a 2.5" SATA form factor.
Lenovo support center told you that it's not possible because they cannot do this upgrade. They can only replace damaged components with those that were in the original configuration.

  • Best method to clone HDD to new SSD

I am about to upgrade the 256 Gb HDD on my Late 2008 Aluminium Macbook (running 10.9.4) to a 512 Gb SSD.
What is the best practice for cloning the existing drive to the new one?  My goal is to just have a seamless transition where I can swap one disk for the other, boot up from the new SSD drive and have the computer function just like it did when running from the original HDD, with all my existing apps and data.
I have a USB to SATA cable if needed, and maintain regular Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule.
I've read several different approaches, like using Carbon Cloner or OS X Disk Utility or restoring from a Time Machine backup, and would like to know if there is a stated best practice way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any help - it will be much appreciated!

Get an external enclosure - OWC sells them in a variety of flavors. Or use your SATA->USB cable.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner (if only for the free trial time) and plug in the SSD, inside the enclosure, use Disk Utility to format the SSD and then use CCC to clone your old drive to your new SSD.
Everything should go off without a hitch...

  • Restoring iMessages from old HDD to new SSD Mavericks 10.9.5

    Hi everyone
I recently upgraded my late 2011 MBP with an SSD and did a clean install of Mavericks. Took the old HDD out and put in a USB caddy for external usage and to restore my files.
One thing I'm having trouble with though is iMessage. I don't seem to be able to restore the messages from my old HDD to my new SSD.
Just wondering if this can be done and if so how?
    Thanks

    No.
The Attachment folder that has an Alias in the other.
This is a Pic of the First folder over the second.
I have the Path Bar Showing across the bottom (any Finder window > View Menu > Show Path Bar)
Sorry it is so big but I need the width to show the names of folders in the Path Bar.
There is no way to "Merge" the Chat.db items
However you could keep you new Archive Folder and move the Contents of that from the Old folder (all the Dated Folders of old Chats) so that the Archive is a combo of old and new.
The Alias need to be recreated as it points to the "top" folder.  If you Move the Folder then the Alias will "Follow" and be pointing to the External Disk.

  • T410S clone old HDD to new SSD failed at the last moment, any suggestion

I just purchased a samsung 840 250GB SSD and want to replace my current 250GB Toshiba HDD in my T410s.
I used the Samsung Data Migration Software to clone the old disk to the SSD. However, everytime it came to 99% completion, it pop out the message "The target disk disconnected -0001 [0xffffffff]" and then the cloning failed. It seems all the docs in C: was copied so I tried to boot from the SSD but it said "missing boost mgr". So does any one know what happend? How can I clone my old disk to the SSD and use the SSD to boost the system? I don't want to reinstall anything.
    Many thanks!

Is the Recovery Partition a problem or the System_Drv Partition cause the problem?

  • Proper way to migrate OS to new SSD with mSSD cache Intel RST installed ?

    Hi everyone,
    I have a laptop hp envy dv6 7300 CTO.
it has  750 GB SATA  with 32 GB  mSSD for Intel RST cache now.
Right now,  I am purchasing 500 GB SSD to upgrade my HDD so I guess I do not need intel RST to work with my new SSD.
I am not sure about how to disable intel RST cache properly (without damaging OS)
    I think
    1.  Backup my important data
    2.  Disable Intel RST in laptop BIOS  , just change from <enable> to <disable>  and hope system will resolve everything.
    3.  make sure system run in AHCI mode, check boot order
    4.  Boot to windows , make sure everything work fine (should see new 32 GB drive)   uninstall intel RST driver stuff.
    5.  Clone HDD to new SSD
    6.  install SSD to laptop   , set boot order
Am I correct about process ?

  • Do I have all the parts to replace my HDD with a new SSD on my Macbook (late 2008)?

Hey everyone, I am trying to figure out if have all the parts to replace my hdd with a new ssd on my macbook (late 2008 aluminum).
I just bought a crucial mx100 SSD and plan on replacing my mac HDD. I have the appropriate screwdrivers, and a bootable OSX on a usb drive. I also purchased a sabrent usb 2.0 to sata/ide hard drive adapter.
How do I replace and install OSX on my new SSD?
From what I read here are the steps I'm planning on taking.
    1) Detach the old HDD
    2) Attach new SSD.
    3) Turn on computer and use the bootable usb drive to install OS X.
Does that work, I think I read somewhere about maybe formatting the SSD before I can use the bootable usb. Any input or help would be awesome. Thanks.
I'd prefer to do a clean install of yosemite and not carbon copy my old HDD

  • How do I restore new SSD on pavilion DV7 from 2nd HDD restore partition?

My DV7 came with two drives, an SSD and an IDE with the recovery on a partition of the large HDD. The SSD died. I've got a new drive and put it in, but when I hit F11 to do a restore, I get a  "no bootable device" message. I sort of thot F11 would send it to the restore partition and it w/b bootable. I don't have disks. What am I doing wrong? (Other than not to make disks in the first place.)
I can't get the bios to cough up the system's installed hard drive information. I'm running a startup test now and it shows a primary hard disk self test and SMART test passed and is now working on that secondary hard disk self test which, from the length of time it's taking, must be the much larger HDD.  So I'm assuming it's found the new SSD.

I've always made the rescue disks before (I'm old...My partner and I have had several laptops over the last 20 years! ) but I've looked all over and can't find them for this machine.    And I honestly didn't remember this machine asking me to do it. Likely it did.  Likely I made them and put them somewhere safe...which of course means I'll never find them!
I didn't know much about SSDs when I got the machine, except they were fast. I was seduced by the speedy side of the force when I was talking to the HP salesperson. My understanding was, because SSDs were still unknown quantities and more likely to demise catastrophically than HDDs, HP put the restore on the secondary drive. From what you say, this was obviously not the case. Also, the SSD is so small, you kinda need all the room you can get!
I've made DVDs from iso files before, but sadly, I can't read the windows key on the bottom of the machine. Again...I have a belarc printout...somewhere...with all the registry info on it. Probably in that safe place with the rescue disks. *facepalm*
I DID find my original receipt and turns out it had home premium, not pro (I got pro for my desktop and for my previous laptop and assumed I had for this one.) However, it also turns out I've got an extended warrantee and it's still covered (barely). I'm going to send the whole machine in for a complete overhaul. Yipppeeee!
So...I think we can mark this solved, even if somewhat unorthodoxically. Thanks very much for you help. I learned some important details about the machine, which is always a very good thing.

  • Ssd vs hdd for new pro

i ordered a new macbook a week and a half ago and today i spoke with an apple rep who happily helped me exchange it for a new MBP 13". i originally ordered my computer with the 128GB SSD. i love the speed of the SSD and the fact that it barely heats up and since i use it on my lap more often than not. so...when i was talking to the apple rep, he said it was faster and easier for him to arrange the exchange and give me the standard 250 GB HDD. he said that it can be swapped for a third party drive if i want when i get it. my concern is this...how easily is this done, where do i get the 3rd party SSD and how can i get the OS and everything installed. i'm not the biggest computer nerd in the world, but i've done a fair bit of stuff with my old PC. sine i'm new to Mac-world i'm scared that i may screw it up or have problems with installing the SSD and i'll be stuck with a traditional HDD. i ordered the SSD for a reason and now i don't know if i should call apple back and delay delivery of my computer (and pay add'l $315) to have them put the SSD in for me or if i should just do it myself. any suggestions are appreciated. thank you.

It appears that you have misharacterized my earlier post. As I mentioned earlier, we are not talking about the installation of an HDD, but rather an SSD. I have been operating under the assumption that you were aware of the difference between the two, but perhaps that has been in error on my part.
So that we are on the same page: An SSD is a "solid state drive" that emulates an HDD by using flash memory. It has no moving parts, and typically has far superior read times then an HDD (that will vary by manufacturer). Benefits usually include, much less power consumption, speed, durability (no moving parts) and weight (lighter).
Because these drives are still in the "early adopter" stages, they are not considered standard yet, and they have been notoriously difficult to configure in the MBs as you can see by posts on the forum. In fact, only a few brands have had any success with the drives running Bootcamp, and they have been limited to high end Drives like the Intel X-25M (160 GB retails for $660).
I don't think it's appropriate for someone to imply a process is straightforward when one only needs to look at the forum to see how much difficulty users of all expertise levels have had installing an SSD. At no point do I argue that installation of a standard HDD is not relatively straightforward. I recommend you use the search option with the following search terms "SSD install" if you doubt my claims.
Again, for someone invested in the process, as I mentioned in my first post, all the hurdles that people have experienced can be eventually overcome - but my point was Elisabeth may not want to invest the time and energy that she may require to get the SSD configured properly and working given her specific situation, being a busy student.
As for my anxiety, as you called it, regarding my own computer and my issues regarding SATA configurations, there are numerous threads on this forum and others with countless posts of people who are anxious.
There is a thread, for exmaple on another popular mac forum documenting my concerns that has about 1,392 posts and counting and well over 100,000 views since the Macbook was released.

  • HDD problem after installing new SSD

i bought a Kingstone SSD 60GB, and procced to a clean installation in my HP DV7-1020us laptop wich i love. All nice and good... i got out the HDD, install SSD in previously used HDD slot, install windows 7 on SSD partition, put the HDD in second hard drive bay that was it.
The problem is... after couples shuts down of my laptop (still working good), one time when i started, my laptop spent like 10-15 mins trying to start up the windows , ( i could hear my old HDD working hard) and after that i wanted to reach my HDD but i couldnt... i double click on the partition i want to open and my HDD starts working hard hard and in the end it says that i need to format it so i can acces it.  My hdd haves 3 partitions... i runned disk checks and repairs and still doing the same. I finally formated all of it... all of my HDD partitions including the Recovery partition. My HDD works fine until i shut down my laptop for the first time after formating, then another 10-15 mins to start up and shut down the windows. Also if i connect my hdd via USB everything is fine ( if i previously format the HDD and connect it via USB).  But if i move it back into my laptop in my sata slot things goes bad again. Also if i wait 10 mins at start up, get the hdd out and connect it via usb it still runs very ver very slow, and one partition asks me for formating. So i'm thinking that my second sata slot connection does something bad to my hdd.
I'm thinking that my second sata slot haves some problems... what should i do? I dont like my HDD working on my USB, it's a laptop, everything has to be integrated.
Oh and if i move my ssd from first sata slot to my second one, it says  "please insert bootable device...."
Thank you, if u need more information please ask me

    Hi mykey651,
Thank you for your query, I will do my utmost to assist you.
I grasp you have installed a SSD drive as the main drive and the original drive as a secondary. All works well until you reboot and then it is unable to locate the SSD.
Here is a link to HP Notebook Hard Drives & Solid State Drives Identifying, Preventing, Diagnosing and Recovering from...
If that has not helped, I suggest you go out to the bios and restore the defaults.  This will reset the system and make it scan for  installed hardware.  This should help it to find the new SSD as the boot drive.
Here are two more documents that may be of help.

  • Best method to assign old itunes library on old hdd to new computer with new itunes software on ssd.

    Hi everyone,
    I put an old windows xp desktop to rest that had all my itunes software and files on it. I pulled the 3.5 internall hdd with the xp os and all the itunes program software and itunes music files from this old computer. I just added into my new computer via sata cables and its showing and i have access to it. I have an ssd as my main drive on my main new computer. This is where windows 7 pro is sitting. Ive never had itunes on this computer. Im wondering if it is as easy as the below;
    1. install itunes on the ssd c: drive
    2. hold down shift while opening itunes for the first time
    3. point to the library.itl file on the old 3.5 internall hdd
    Will itunes then always see and link to this itl file on my old hdd and work fine? My concerns are;
    1. does it matter that this old hdd has a windows os on it along with the itunes program and all its associated files/ folder
    2. i dont want itunes to start copying all those music files from the old hdd to my ssd. this would crash my ssd, as its not very large.
    3. if the above works fine will my ipod when first mounted sync up fine?
    4. are i do the hold down shift thing, what settings should i change in itunes? i know ill have to auth the computer. but how about organization settings?
And final question. I plan on using this old hdd just to store itunes music. I plan on deleting all the other folders, program files etc. Everything but the itunes folder. Is this safe? Should i leave certain windows os files on the hdd as to not disturb necessary processes?
    Thanks!

Still no luck on this. Would it be easier to migrate the iTunes across using migration assistant? Is it possible to migrate it across while making it save the migrated library to the second eHDD (I would erase the copy of the library on that drive before doing so)
The PB is a G4 867 with firewire 400 (but only UBS1) and running 10.3.9 (not sure what version iTunes) - I can daisy chain it to the mini's FW800 with couple of external drives I have.
I have held off using migration assistant as all the files and stuff I want is on the eHDD and I don't want any unnecessary legacy items from the PB getting onto the mini.

  • I got a new SSD and I cannot put anything onto my iPhone 4S through the SSD, but I can on my old HDD. How can I fix this issue?

So recently I purchased a 250g SSD for my new build, while still keeping my old 1TB HDD. Whenver I try to use iTunes (the latest), I cannot transfer ANYTHING onto my iPhone 4S. There is no "Add to" button, nor can I drag and drop. However, I can do both on my old HDD. I also own an iPad 4, which I can easily use on both drives. This is quite annoying because I have to restart my computer just to add music or videos, etc. I do not want to sync because I will lose all of my music, or whatever else it takes, and I do not want that.
So how can I enable file transferring on my new SSD?

Move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, or drives in this case.
iDevices are designed to only sync to one library (computer).  Attempts to sync with a new library will require removing all media from the device and replacing with media from the new library.

  • Should I put the new SSD drive in main HDD bay or the Superdrive/Optical bay for a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro?

    Hello All,
I'm considering getting a new SSD drive to add on to my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro (13 inches, unibody), and wondering which one of the following two options I should really adapt:
    (1) Replace the original OEM hard drive in the main bay with the new SSD drive, and then remove the Superdrive (or the optical CD drive) and to be fitted into an external enclosure for using it externally in the future, and then relocate the original OEM hard drive into the Superdrive position, so both the new SSD (preferably for running the OS and system files) and the old OEM hard drive (for storing media and documents for example) could be used; and
    (2) Keep the original OEM hard drive in place in the main drive, and buy a superdrive/optical drive caddy to goes with the new SSD drive, and together place the new SSD drive fitted inside the caddy into the position of the Superdrive/Optical CD drive, and configure the boot preference to be booting from the Superdrive/Optical Drive (which is now the SSD drive with OS and system files);
I've done some researches and some suggested that option (2) is better approach for at least two reason: (a) the MBP main drive come with some sort of shock proof sensor, so placing the original optical hard drive in the main is better than placing it in the super/optical drive where there is NO shock sensing feature provided, and placing SSD in the super/optical drive, one doesn't really have to worry so much about shocks; and (b) as during the process of shutting down the MBP, for optical hard drive, some power will sometimes needed to finally spin down the drive, but if such optical hard drive is place in the superdrive, the power maybe cut off right away when MBP shut down, which may cause issue to the optical hard drive in a long run as it never properly spin it down.
Then the main concern is that, if I adapt option (2) above, placing SSD in the super/optical drive bay and install and running the OS from there, will it decrease the performance (i.e. speed, latency, and etc.) as if i was to put the new SSD in the main drive?
Also, any suggestions with respect to Samsung 840 EVO vs. Samsung 850 EVO (250GB)? any well-rated HD caddy aside from OWC for moving the main HDD to optical CD bay? and perhaps an external enclosure for the Superdrive?  Thanks in advance for any comment and/or suggestion.
    - Jack

Could you provide some rationale(s) behind it?  As far as I know, the mid 2010 Macbook Pro, the HDD is running via the SATA interface at running at 3.0 Gb/s, which is SATA II, and the Super-drive and/or the Optical drive, which is also running via SATA II interface, so I would assume the performance (i.e. primarily in speed) would be similar if not the same by placing the SSD drive in either one of the two places.
Also, wouldn't it be better by placing the SSD in the optical so the OEM HDD could be kept in the original main bay since it has the shock-sensing feature there?
