Does TC Automatically Mount?

I'm currently using an Airport Extreme Base Station as my wireless router, and I've also attached a hard drive to it, which is where I've got the bulk of what is a very large iTunes library. The only problem I have with this set up is that I frequently have to manually mount the drive attached to the AEBS, and it will frequently (but not always) unmount when I close my MacBook. It's a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nevertheless.
Would I have this issue with a TC? Does that drive stay mounted, or at least automatically mount when I connect to my wireless network?
Thanks!

I can't tell from this information whether or not you have your drive set to mount automatically when you start up your computer. If not, you might want to give that a try.

You would want to use a TC primarily for Time Machine backups. If you do this, the TC drive mounts automatically when a backup begins and dismounts when the backup is completed. You really would not want to use the TC for day to day use with iTunes, as it is not designed to function as a media server.

  • Why does Tiger always mount Time Capsule disks automatically?

I have a Time Capsule (early 2009) with wireless connections to an iMac running OS 10.5.7 Leopard and a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11 Tiger. The G4 always automatically mounts on the desktop the TC Data disk (i.e., backup volume disk) and any disks physically connected to the iMac. Even if I unmount them, they will come back to the G4 desktop. The iMac requires manual mounting of disks except for the Data disk which mounts automatically during a backup. How do I stop the G4 from automatically mounting disks?

I had looked in the G4 (OS 10.4.11) System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and found an item called Airport Base Station Agent listed as an application. This also appears in the Login Items on the iMac (OS 10.5.7). So I didn't see that as the culprit. I didn't see the Time Capsule listed in the Login items on either computer. Maybe this application or some preference file is corrupted on the G4. I don't know how Airport Base Station Agent got installed so I am reluctant to remove it and later find out that wireless no longer works. Maybe when Airport Utility is installed? I was unable to locate it using Find File. The G4 remounts the Time Capsule disk on a Restart so it must have something to do with the Login. But I don't know what.

  • How do I get an encrypted dmg on a network share to automatically mount at login?

I need to mount an encrypted dmg that is stored on an SMB share to automatically mount at login.  I've got the SMB share to mount at login as a "Login Item," but I can't get the encrypted dmg to mount.
    A related question:
I've got a shell script that mounts my encrypted image, copies data using rsync, and then unmounts the encrypted image.  I tried automating this using a cronjob, but cronjobs are nut run as $USER.  Since the cronjob isn't run as $USER, the cronjob does not have access to the $USER's keychain and cannot authenticate to the encrypted dmg.  Any tips on getting either of these to work?

I don't use SMB so I'm not sure whether this will work, but try it. Open a TextEdit window and type something like this:
    smb://user:password@server/path-to-file
Make the obvious substitutions in the text, then select it and drag it to the Desktop. You should get a bookmark file. Double-click it to test. If it works, you can rename the file and put it anywhere you like. Add it to your login items.
If the above doesn't work, try again with "cifs" in place of "smb".
The "user:password@" part may not be necessary if the password is in your keychain.

  • Automatically mount USB 3.0 WD External HDD with iMac 24-inch mid-2007

I am using a 2TB Western Digital (WD) My Book Essential external Hard Disk Drive for my iMac 24-inch mid-2007 to use it as a Time Machine backup disk. This HDD only comes with a USB 3.0 connection.
Function-wise, it works with the iMac and Time machine uses it for backup without any issues.
However, the following problem occurs at every restart: the HDD does not mount automatically. And Time Machine stops backuping. To make it work again, I have to either unplug/replug the power cable of the HDD or unplug/plug the USB cable of the HDD so it mounts again and can be used by Time Machine. When unmounted, I tried to see if the disk was at least visible in Disk Utility so I could mount it from there but it does not appear in Disk Utility until I physically unplug/plug it back again.
For troubleshooting purposes, I have tried to use this HDD with my MacBook Pro Retina 2013 and I don't have the same problem as the HDD mounts itself automatically when I restart.
So I assume the problem reside in the way the iMac mid-2007 handle USB 3.0 as it was probably manufactured before the USB 3.0 standard was developped.
Would anyone know a possible workaround for this issue? I don't have too many hopes but one never knows...

    I am using Mavericks 10.9.1.
The problem was also occuring when I was running Mountain Lion.
It looks backward compatible to me except when it comes to automatically mount itself after a restart.

  • [solved] External drive automatically mounted as read-only

    Hi folks,
I have a strange issue with an external drive automatically mounted as read-only whenever I plug it to my laptop :
    [sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount
    /dev/sdb1 on /run/media/sclarckone/dd type ntfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1,uhelper=udisks2)
    And I can't remount it as read-write :
    [sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdb1
    mount: cannot remount /dev/sdb1 read-write, is write-protected
But of course, I'm able to mount it as read-write on other operating systems.
I have udisks and udisks2 installed on my system. I also belong to the storage group so I thought I could mount a filesystem as a normal user but I can't :
    [sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount /dev/sdb1 dd/
mount: only root can do that
I don't know whether it is relevant to this problem, but I have systemd and polkit installed as well... Does anybody has an idea of where the problem could come from ?
    Thanks for your help !

    Check out following file :
    /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy
Look for mount a device and It should have configuration like :
    <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount">
    <description>Mount a device</description>

  • Automatically mount drives on network

We are currently set up with an ethernet network, where all 3 computers can log in and see each others files.
However, rather than having to go to network, find the drive I want to mount, and log in each time, is there way to have it so they automatically mount when the drive is accessible?
Our main central computer is always on and accessible, but when you turn off the secondary computer accessing it, you have to log back in again when you start it up.

    Hi
If I've understood you correctly there are a number of ways of doing this.
Connect to Server > IP Address of Server. Provide the user name and password and ask Keychain Manager to remember the details. Now that it's mounted on the desktop select System Preferences from the Apple Menu > Accounts > Admin Account or account you're interested in > Login Items. Add the mounted share into the Window by either dragging it from the Desktop or clicking on the '+' icon.
Provided the server is switched on and accessible to the network and it has the same IP address you used to connect to it initially it should present itself on the desktop when you power on and login with your computer.
If in an OD environment you can map shares to mount at login time using Managed Preferences in WorkGroup Manager.
    Tony.

  • Disk Image won't automatically mount for Share iPhoto Library

    Hey All,
I've just got a new mac and am sharing an iPhoto library between two users. I moved the iPhoto Library Folder to a DMG set it to ignore permissions.
In each account I did the following: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
The problem is that the DMG won't mount automatically mount. I set it up under both user accounts to mount at start up but it won't do it.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using fast user switching or logging out and then back in to the second account? It may be that fast user switching doesn't trigger a "startup" scenario in the second account which is necessary for the disk image to mount.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Trying to automatically mount two disk images from NAS

I am trying to get two mac os x journaled sparse disk images to automatically mount upon login. I have tried to add the following items to my login items under System Prefs/Accounts and none of them have worked:
    1. Browse to the file and choose it
    2. Create an alias and choose the alias
    3. Mount the disk, and then browse to the mounted disk and choose it
    4. Create a symbolic link and then choose it
Maybe I am doing something wrong, and maybe there is a different way to do it. Any ideas?

    V.K. wrote:
I don't know what's going on here. as i said it works for me.
try doing it using a terminal command.
make a new workflow consisting of a single action "run shell script".
inside the shell script put the following
    hdiutil attach /path/to/diskimage
to get the path to the image drag it to the action window. enclose the path in quotation marks. it should look something like this:
    hdiutil attach "/volumes/dlinkroot/Volume_1/media/photos/iPhoto/imagename.sparseimage"
If you want the image to mount a bit faster add -noverify to the command like this:
    hdiutil attach "/volumes/dlinkroot/Volume_1/media/photos/iPhoto/imagename.sparseimage" -noverify
see if it mounts this way.
    Thanks for the quick feedback.
That shell script option almost works. What I noticed was that /Volumes/Volume_1 which is the volume created on the dlink NAS needs to be mounted in order for the sparse images on the NAS to be mounted. Maybe the other way also I had the same issue (login items as well as automator app). It's just that I noticed it only now.
So is there a way to ensure Volume_1 is always mounted? Adding hdiutil attach /Volumes/Volume_1 does not mount it

  • Bridge Does Not Automatically Bring Up Photoshop When the Photo is Double-Clicked

I have just purchased CS4 with Bridge for my new MacIntosh.  In Bridge for the PC, when I double click a photo it automatically brings up Photoshop.  On the Mac version, it gives me an error message saying that part of the application is not loaded.  I completely uninstalled the program, and reloaded the application and still get the same message.  So in Bridge on the Mac, to get around this, I right click the picture and go to "Open With" and there are two entries:  "Open with CS4 (default)" and "Open with CS4."  This works if I pick either option.  My Windows version only has "Open with CS4 (default)" as the option.
I called Adobe support (in India?) with no solution.
I really like the double click option rather that using the pop-out menu choice.  What is wrong with the Mac install, and how can I fix this issue?

Thank you for your help.  I updated the software and it "healed" itself.

  • When I click on a picture, Photoshop Elements 12 does not automatically open.

When I click on a picture, Photoshop Elements 12 does not automatically open (as it did when I used previous versions Photoshop Elements 4 and 9).  I can't even right-click (Windows) on the picture and choose Open With and specifiy Photoshop Elements 12.  I have called Adobe several times (Case No. 185140584) and they keep saying it has been sent up to senior management and they will call me back with a solution - but to no avail!  No return calls and I still can't really use the Product I paid for and downloaded.  The only way I can open up a picture to edit it is to open Photoshop Elements 12 and then then click "Open" and then search for the picture on my hard drive (which takes a lot more time!  I did not experience this difficulty at all with versions 4 or 9!

    Hi,
You failed to say which Windows system you have - I can get the "Open With" to work on my Windows 7 64bit system.
When you try to set up the "Open With", are you setting the correct target program?
It's the green one (not the red one) in the above image.
Once you have selected that program, make sure you set it as default so that a double click will open the photo in the editor.
    Good luck
