The retina MBP will be faster than the conventional one on boot and shutoffs as well as very demanding CPU/GPU intensive applications.  As far as web browsing , text editing and other non-CPU intensive applications there will be little if any difference between the two.
If you install A SSD in the conventional MBP, it will be faster than the retina due to the faster CPU.  Note also that the conventional MBP can have up to 16 GB RAM installed. The retina is restricted to a maximum of 8 GB.
You will have to weigh the differences in the display, speed, form (weight) and flexibility as to how they suit your needs.  All I can do is to and highlight the differences.
Ciao.

Why the 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, featuring 8MB L3 cache and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.60GHz.

The question is, is it worth the extra cost on the MacBookPro.  Is the performance tht much better??

  • What does the 2.5 Quad-core Intel Core i7 get me and is it worth $250?

2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7.  Planning on buying a MacBook Pro tomorrow but debating the 2.5 Quad-core Intel core. Is it worth the extra money?

your's is better then mine. how much ram do you have? I would actually wait as their has been a rumor going around that they will be coming out with a whole new looking new acting line of MBP!
so if you got a wad of cash burning a hole in your pocket, I would suggest updating the hardware to your computer. This would update the performance greatly.
Try maxing out your ram to whatever computer model (year, model identifier, size of screen) you have. different ones hold different ram and officially and unofficially max out at different sizes.
and updating your hard drive to be SSD will give you a reliable fast hard drive. You will feel like you have a new computer and would have spent a small fraction of what you were going to.
And then when the new ones come out (rumors saying soon), you will be able to use the SSD you just bought and put it in your old one, (assuming the new ones take 2.5" hdd's)
But if you don't want to rely on rumours as they are very unreliable and take the plunge, really any of the two models would work. They are ridiculously fast computer that have the potential to edit films with Final Cut Pro on them which is a very heavy task for any length of video as you may or may not know.
Lastly apple supplies both of these things for you to get (SSD and RAM, except for the unsupported RAM)

  • Does the core install media include wireless drivers?

I was originally planning on doing a net install but that would require me to hook up to a wired connection, does the core install media include wireless drivers so I can connect via wireless? I use an intel wireless card that was supported out of the box on my previous arch install, no ndiswrapper or anything like that needed. Thanks in advance.

Firmware for all cards are not available though due to silly licensing.

  • I have 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute?

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • RAM Update to 8 or even 16GB on MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012?

    Hey folks,
i heard and read rumours, that it is possible to update the ram of the MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012/no retina) to a double 8GB RAM, making it 16GB.
    Which would be great, right?
Apple says on the support website that all the MacBooks 13" are only able to hold two 4GB making it 8.
Currently I only have the standard two times two 4GB.
So i was wondering, since I found this Crucial PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz 8GB SODIMM on the Internet if that's a fit for the rumours.
    It says on the site:
    "Guaranteed compatible with:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012
Now, has any one experience with this one?
Maybe this memory will plug both slots and that's why it says compatible?
you find the website here: http://www.macdimms.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-DDR3-1600MHz-8GB-SODIMM_p_123.html
    appreciate the help.

It won't plug both spots. To get 16 GB you will have to buy 2 sticks, one for each slot.
Apple only recommends and will suport 8 and recommends installing in pairs - so 2 slots of 4 GB each. You can always try the 2 slots of 8 and see if they will work. I would recommend ordering from crucial direct. They are one of the better memory companies around and have a website at crucial.com.
You shouldn't have any issues as the maximum non-Apple supported config is 16 GB.
    Good luck.

  • Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on: 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.  2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7? Is it worth the extra $250?

Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on:
    2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.
    2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Is it worth the extra $250?
    What's the big difference? Thanks.

Upgrade RAM yourself through macsales.com for $60.  Use the remaining $140 of Apple's mmeory price and upgrade for $150 to hi-res (1680x1050) and anti-glare.  I never regretted that upgrade on mine.
    My humble opinion.
Sorry ... I just did the math and that puts you $10 out of pocket ...

My question is, "Does the A300/M00 have room for Intel Turbo Memory and if so is there a tutorial to placing the module in".

I dont think it does. Intel dropped the Robson cards earlier this year due to the lack of performance benefits.

What does the core crypto kernel module in IOS comprise off? Basically trying to figure out if the new iphone & ipads are FIPS 140-2 compliant. (iphone 5 or 6 & ipad 3rd gen and above). Apple and NIST state that the Apple IOS core crypto kernel module v4.0 is validated FIPS 104-2 BUT what we don't know is that whether the core crypto kernel module covers the complete device or just some pieces and modules of the device ?

Doubtful anyone here would know that as we don't work for Apple and know nothing more than what Apple has made public in their FIPS documentation.,

  • Does the X1 Carbon have Intel Wireless Display? (Wi-Di, widi)

I need to purchase several 2nd Gen X1 Carbon units, (4th Gen Intel Haswell Core i7 models - I'm thinking of the 20A7002WUS model)
I cannot find anywhere that says that this model has Wi-Di.  (Intel Wireless Display)
The wireless card in the model I'm looking at is the Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260AC and the specs of that card lists Wi-Di as being included. See here:  ark.intel.com/products/75439/Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-7260
I do find it strange that Lenovo doesn't list Wi-Di anywhere in the specs or product details for the X1 series.  I also know that OEMs customise wireless cards all the time, often disabling certain features.  I've found other forum posts here that suggest that Lenovo has disabled Wi-Di on the Intel wireless card.  I've also found other articles and reviews in various places that suggest that Wi-Di does work but I haven't seen anything conclusive.
So - in short - does the X1 Carbon Core i7 20A7 series have Intel Wireless Display?

The X1 Carbon 20A7 supports WiDi! Although haven't had a chance to try it on mine.
