  • Will MacBook Pros sold in July come with OS X Lion Pre-installed?

I want to get a MacBook Pro for my 16th Birthday this summer in July, and I was wondering if OS X Lion will come pre-installed for free with any Mac sold after the official release date of Lion? I would rather not have to spend money or wait to buy a Mac until it becomes free, but if I need to I will. Just wondering.

I bought a Mac air on July 9th, just a few days ago, and Lion was not installed by default, of course, not available yet. But I was told by the Apple representative that I will be able to download Lion for free, later.
Now looking back, I think I got lucky. This is my 1st Mac but I'm a long time Linux and Windows users. I would like to see how smooth the upgrades are before jumping into Lion. If Os X works like Ubuntu, some in-place upgrades tend to break existing applications. I know hardware/software integration is better on Mac, but still is a scary step to me.
I also installed couple of applications on Snow Leopard, including Office 2011 for Mac and not so sure if that will work or not under Lion.

  • I want to know when the new iMacs will come with OS X Lion pre-installed.

Or if you have to purchase and download Lion from the App store at home. Lion seems to only be pre-installed on the mac minis and macbook air. Let me know if I am wrong!

http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ until then. Be glad while you still have a chance to purchase Macs with Snow Leopard preinstalled.    You may need it to migrate to Lion compatible applications, as there are many changes between Snow Leopard and Lion, especially the elimination of Rosetta.  See my FAQ*:

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • Does the new MacBook Pro have an optical drive?

Quick, easy question - does the new MacBook Pro come with an optical drive? Or does one have to purchase an external optical drive if one wants one?

Depends on which one you buy. The Retina models do not and if you need one, have to purchase the external SuperDrive for an additional cost. The other non-Retina models, 13" and 15", do come with an internal slot-loading SuperDrive. There are, as yet, no more 17" models and no announcement whether they will be released later.

  • Why does the new MacBook Pro 13 no longer come with a graphics card?

Why does the new MacBook Pro no longer come with a graphics card?  Or at least make it so you can opt for one.

I know how you feel. Your MacBook Pro has integrated graphics 384 MB or 512 MB. If you are a gamer, creative professional or just want more VRAM get a 15 inch MacBook Pro with up to 1 gig of VRAM or a windows gaming laptop with up to 16 gigs of VRAM (a ridiculous amount!). If you get a windows pc, you can always install virtual box. There is no point in buying a 13 inch MacBook Pro unless you need a lightweight laptop with all of the extra "goodies". There is also no possible way to change the graphics unless you know how to "unhook" the card from the processor and install a new one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Does the new MacBook pro 13" has asymmetrical fans (that the 15" with Retina) has?

The new MacBook Pro with retina display has more silent fans due to asymmetrical  fans. My question is, if this change has been applied to MacBook Pro 13" & 15" versions.
    Thanks.

    No it does not.....
The only Mac with the assymetrical blades is the 15" retina MBP.
And they are pretty darn effective(I can never hear the fans unless I open p something extremely power consuming and still they aern't as loud as my old Windows PC).
Mind you the MacBook can get a little uncomfortable if you keep the base in contact with your skin. Otherwise the fans are excellent..

  • Does the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013) supports 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport?

I understand that the new Macbook Pro 15" (late 2013 with Nvidia) supports 4K screen resolutions via HDMI at low hertz. But does it support 4K via Thunderbolt/Displayport? I read on Intel's web that the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB memory in theory can support it. Would be important as a range of new 4K 32" monitors will come out over the next year. Would be great for photo, video editing etc.

I also am very confused by this because per apple's support page it only supports 4K via HDMI at 30Hz but SHOULD support 60Hz via a mini display port 1.2 specification built into thunderbolt 2.
However, I think it does include 60Hz support (although not mentioned on apple's website).  My evidence of this is that on the ifixit teardown they found a an Intel DSL 5520 Thunderbolt 2 controller which according to Intel's and Wikipedia's website is falcon ridge which means it should support Display port 1.2 natively.  Plus, on apple's thunderbolt page they specifically mention connecting a 4K display to a macbook pro through the thunderbolt port (not which is suggested by the support page listed above):
"Now with Thunderbolt 2 built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect the latest 4K desktop displays and get double the bandwidth for your peripherals. And the two generations of Thunderbolt technology are compatible with each other."
Also, the Apple mini displayport support page has not been updated since 2012 but I believe it is just showing old information
The BIG piece of evidence against the new macbook pro's supporting 4K through the thunderbolt port is that on apple's tech specs page they specifically mention 4K under the HDMI section but make no mention of it under the thunderbolt 2 section.

  • Does the new Macbook Pro 13 2011 work with the Intel SSD?

I've been trying to upgrade my macbook pro to an ssd (using stock original 5400 rpm 320 gb HDD) but so far I've been reading for like 2-3 hrs and came to a conclusion. Intel is the most reliable and most highly recommended. However, Intel SSD doesn't work with the new Macbook Pro 13" & 17" because of some cabling SATA III issues. Does the issue still remain or has it been fixed? If it hasn't been fixed, what is the current most highly recommended and reliable and best in terms of speed, reliability, and just...best SSD available that works best with the 2011 MBP? Can anyone help me out? Ive been reading that OCZ and others are faster than Intel but less reliable (higher failure rates) and MBP can't take advantage of faster 6/Gbps RAID III or something. help me!!! Should I just wait?

If you search the web, you will predominately read about problems, not good experiences.
I don't believe Intel is any less subject to issues, than the Sandforce SSD drives.
Buy from a reliable source with a good return policy and warranty.
    OWC is well regarded.

  • Does the 13" MacBook Pro **NO** Retina, come with Mountain Lion??

Ordered mine from Best Buy last week, according to their website, as well as Apple's website it should have Mountain Lion OS on it. It only has Lion 10.7.5 on it.
Is that how it should be?

If your Macbook Pro comes with Lion then it's not the latest revision. The last Macbook Pro to ship with Lion has the Model identifier 9.2 released in June 2012. The lasted revision has the Model identifier 10.2 released in Oct 2012 and ships with Mountain Lion
