Does the 15" non-retina MBP accept 16 gigs of ram?

most of people who i asked told me that you can, but i read on one of the apple support articles that 8 is the maximum.

2011 Macbook Pro = 16GB DDR3 1333MHz 204 PIN SODIMM
2012 Macbook Pro = 16GB DDR3 1600MHz 204 PIN SODIMM
2010 Macbook PRO = 8GB DDR3 1066MHz 204 PIN SODIMM - unless it's a 13 Inch 2010 Macbook PRO - then you can upgrade to 16GB DDR3 1066MHz 204 PIN SODIMM.
use Apple Certified/Tested RAM to avoid complications/issues when you install them.

Does the macbook pro retina 15 inch comes with cd/dvd drive?
    thanks

The MacBook Pro with Retina display doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive. Instead, you have to buy the Apple USB SuperDrive or any external optical drive, or you can use Remote Disc if you have another Mac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287

  • Is 8gb worth it for the new 13" Retina MBP? or should i stay at 4gb?

So im planning on buying the new retina MBP. Really not sure if 8gb is worth it or if i should stay at 4gb. I plan on using this as my main computer for School and Home.

    Get the 8gb.
Back when it was possible to add memory yourself starting out with the minimum and adding more memory if you needed it was the way to go but now you're stuck with what you buy and if you undersize the memory you will not be happy with the system.

  • Does the iMac with Retina 5K Display have "user accessible" SO-DIMM slots or not?

The Apple Site "http://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/" for the iMac with Retina 5K Display states for memory that it has "four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible".  What does that really mean?  Contact with Apple support indicates that the newest iMac is sealed, therefore I MUST order it with all of the memory I need, or I would have to break the seal (tear it apart) to upgrade the memory later to get to the memory slots...there is no access door as there was in earlier iMacs.  Is the memory in slots or soldered in?  How can that be interpreted as "user accessible"?  This seems very misleading, or Apple support has it wrong.
Sorry if this seems like a rant, but it sort of is.  Does anyone know the facts on this?

The previous 27 inch iMacs had the same statement. It means that the user can access the memory slots and add or change ram. There is an access panel on the iMac. On 21 inch iMacs there is no door and the ram is not user accessible.

  • What sort of spywear/virus protection does the macbook pro retina have

what sort of spy wear/virus protection does a macbook pro retina have

The system has built-in malware protection that Apple updates as required as long as you keep you system properly updated.
There is no spyware protection. Only you can prevent spyware.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Should I buy the 13' non retina MacBook Pro or the RMbP

I am looking forward to buying a new MacBook Pro this year, but I am having a hard time choosing between the newer retina base model of the MacBook Pro or the older (2012) non retina MacBook Pro. I would use the laptop for non heavy gaming, web browsing, and creating documents for school. What would be better in the long run? I know that the newer retina is non upgradable but would the 128ssd and the 4gb of ram would still be good for a couple more years?

Personally, I would spend the extra $$ and get the 13" with 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash Storage. I bought my daughter an early 13" Retina with 8GB of RAM and 128GB Flash Storage of which she only has ~27GB left. She'll be needing an upgraded Flash Storage (OWC) soon if she doesn't offload some files to an external drive. Her rMBP is not the PCIe flash storage.

  • How many HD 1080p Videos should the New MacBookPro Retina Display (2.6GHz i7, 8GB Ram, Flash Memory) should run Flowlessly/Smoothly??

    Dears at Mac Support,
I am a Visual Artist, and I use my MacBook Pro for live Visual/Video Mixing and effects. Since I moved to this new club, i need to run all my Videos on HD 1080p Format. I already had the Latest MacBook Pro (2.3GHz i7, 8GB RAM) with the Stock HDD (5,700 RPM), and it performs beautifully, The only issue was Running more than 1 HD 1080p Videos, where you can feel the slowing down of the Videos. The Solution is moving to SSD Drive where I can run 2 or more HD 1080p Videos Simultaneously (Over Layered).
Instead of investing in an SSD, i preferred buying the new MacBook Pro Retina Display (2.6GHz i7,8GB Ram, 512GB Flash memory). Everything about the new MacBook Pro should support my work and give me a better Performance. Unfortunately, I am not able to run ONLY 2 HD 1080 Videos to gather! The result is being Breakdance style video, like it's cutting and continuing the videos. Compared to my Old MacBook Pro (2.3GHz i7, 8GB RAM), on the old one the Video slows Down but does not Leg or Cut
Is there a Solution for this issue? Or i simply did the Most useless investment of my life?
PS: Both Running on OSX 10.7.4, and both are running on the Video Codecs and Visual Performance Software (Modul8 2.6.4)
More Details: Video format is .MOV (Photo JPEG)
If there is any more details you would need, please do let me know.

A faster hard drive connection is available through your Thunderbolt port.  See what you can connect via Sonnet's adapter:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpresscard34thunderbolt.html
An eSATA or Thunderbolt hard drive would probably be at least faster than the internal drive, and an external SSD may be cheaper than an internal for your notebook, and even faster.

  • Why does the CS6 Master Collection Suite take up so much RAM on a computer??

so, if, i brought the CS6 Master Collection Suite i would need more RAM on my computer right?
because, my apple computer only has 4GB of memory and that program needs 4GB of RAM.
I would need to add more memory to my apple computer say upgrade it to maybe 8GB of RAM??
But, i don't understand why does that suite need so much memory or RAM on a computer??
could i just only download the programs i really need onto my apple laptop and maybe that
would free up some memory or RAM so that the program wouldn't  end up using all of the memory
on my computer could i just do that??

Mzpretty3 you can find the system requirements for CS6 Master Collection at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-system-requirements.html#CS6_Master_ Collection_system_requirements.  For Mac OS we recommend a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and if you are going to do heavy photo or video editing then you will want to have at least 8 GB of RAM available.
Please also be aware that the installation will require at least 15.5 GB of hard drive space.  This is separate from the amount of RAM which you have installed.

  • Upgrading my MBP to 16 gigs of RAM - 1.35 volt vs. 1.5 volt?

    Hey all,
There does not seem to be a diffinitive answer to this question.  The picture below is of the existing ram in my Apple MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 (15-inch DDR3) Early-2011.  When I look this RAM up to find out the voltage, it appears to be 1.5v but I have not been able to verfiy that from a reliable source.  Any ideas?  Will it be labeled somewhere on the chip?
    Crucial suggests a 1.35v chip
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=0EA3E8DAA5CA7304
    OWC suggests a 1.5v chip
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S16P/
A suggestion was made to me by apple (who could not confirm the voltage of the factory installed RAM) to match the voltage of the existing RAM.
Long story short...how can I verfiy the voltage of the chip below, and, does anyone have any other guidance on why I should use 1.35v (less power, extends the battery life?) or the 1.5v?

Yes any App that is RAM hungry will benefit from having more RAM, up to a point. Once you have enough installed that the normal apps you run do not use all of it then the extra is just left doing nothing. If those memory hungry apps aren't running all the memory is just sitting there doing nothing.
More RAM is much better then not enough RAM. But as I stated above "Adding more RAM will not make your system run any faster". It will just be able to run at its normal speed when you have a lot of Apps open at once or are using RAM hungry apps.

I do a decent amount of video editing on imovie, and only had 4mb of RAM installed.  I was told imovie would run much faster with the extra RAM installed?  not the case?

  • Does the 17" non-glare screen option come with silver or black border?

I've read that the new 17" non-glare (aka matte) screen option comes with the now-standard black border and I've also read that it comes with the old silver border as on current-gen MBPs and old PBs. The Apple MBP 17" section doesn't seem to answer the question or have any photos of the non-glare 17".
As asked in the title, does anyone know which border color is standard for the non-glare 17"? Thanks very much.

What I've been trying to figure out is it the new LED backlit, larger color gamut, higher res new screen with an anti-glare film in the old frame? Or is it the same old technology 17" screen on a new unibody base?
If it's the old technology screen on a new computer, I may have to go glossy with mine. If it's the new technology screen and the only downside is a silver frame versus a black one, that's pretty minor and will convince me to go anti-glare.
I can't understand why Apple hasn't cleared this up?

  • Why does the left side of mbp 4.1 get abnormally hot? What's is the problem?

    Hello Everyone:
The bottom of my 2008, 15" 4.1 mbp has always gotten very hot.  lately however, it gets extremely hot. The other night, I fell asleep with it open, on my lap and it literally burned me and left a nice blister on my lap.  I think the fans are working because in a recent update, I've forgotten which one, the fans did go on and I heard them.  Is this kind of heat normal? What, if anything, should I be doing to ensure it's not going to burn itself out?  Obviously I'm not going to put it on my lap again but it's never done that in the past.  Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks in advance for your help.  I can't do much internal work since I've recently suffered a small stroke-like issue that's paralyzed my arms and taken fine motot movement out of my hands.  If it's easy work htough, I may be able to get one of my kids to give me a hand.
    Help please?!??

Ok Austin.  I've downloaded iStat.  I can barely see the writing but the app is totally interesting.  If there's a way to enlarge it without having to use the 'control' function to zoom in on it, that would be great.  Aside from that, it looks like it may well tell me what's happening to my system's temps.  As for the overheating, what you said is very interesting.  I may very well be blocking one of the fans.  We shall see!  Thanks and hopefully blocking one of the fans!
Talk to you tomorrow.  Hopefully I'll have had a chance to review the stats by then.  Take care!
