Does the After Effects Camera perform View Frustum Culling?

I've looked all over for a post about this and I can't find any answer. I am curious as to whether the camera in After Effects culls layers outside of it's view frustum, like this: http://www.lighthouse3d.com/tutorials/view-frustum-culling/. I ask because if it does do view frustum culling then it is pointless going through my project and trimming my layers to be the exact length that they are within the camera's field of view to speed up performance and render time. I am currently working on a project where my camera pans slowly across many photographs and I spend my time trimming the layers when they are not visible by the camera which I believe saves time on rendering and processing, however, it takes me a long time to do manually. I know that every game engine does this to save resources, it would be a shame if after effects didnt do it. But does anyone actually know?
Cheers,
Felix

There is nothing to cull because AE's layers are not geometry-based. They are buffers that are transformed and mangled with effects, which is, for the most part, a completely different thing. AE is smart enough to not load layers outside the comp window into memory and it can also detect layers with 0% opacity and not load them just as it respects of course the layer visibility, but there is no further optimization like slicing layers into tiles and hiding the invisible ones or whatever.

  • After Effects CS4 Performance (BRUTAL)

Despite the comments on this board (from Adobe themselves) claiming improved After Effects CS4 performance over its predecessor, my experience is the exact opposite. This version seems half baked to me.
AE CS4 isn't just SLOW, and by slow I really mean dreadfully unusable, It's unstable as well. Even running the same template files that came with CS3 and 4, there's a huge difference in render time, ram previews etc. When you can't even rotate a simple cube without crashing, there's some real problems, and this is just the beginning. The previous version had no show stopping issues, it performed like a trooper. This latest however, I can't see how I could use it day to day for anything..
    There is no other software on this machine other than, CS4, Firefox, and Lightwave 9.5, which by the way, handles textured objects with hundreds of thousands of polys, not 6. I first get an error message that reads as followed;
After effect error: crash occurred while invoking effect plug-in "Live Photoshop 3D"
followed by, After Effects can't continue: sorry, After Effects has crashed. See... blah blah blah..
By the way this occurs with or without OpenGl enabled.
    Systems specs
    8GB Ram
    Q6600
Hard Drive space 4TB, install drive, 156 GB free
    Vista Business 64
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS (driver 178.13)
This is the same machine that ran CS3 very well, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with this rig..

    Fausto,
I have no problem importing or animating your PSD - no crashes, at least. The resolution is very high. I got better results by cutting the resolution of your PSD in half, which may or may not be an option for you. I improved responsiveness a little by setting the PS 3D layer to "Use Photoshop Transform" in AE.
But ultimately, the responsiveness of the 3D layer in AE is impossible to work with, except with Live Update disabled. It seems like a RAM issue to me. What size are the texture layers on each side of the cube? If they're all 3000x2000-ish like your document, and you're working at full res, consider that AE has to hold all six images in RAM, plus manipulate them in 3D.
My own sense is that the whole 3D layer thing simply isn't ready for that kind of resolution in AE yet. And probably wont be until true 64bit code allows the storage of all those textures in RAM more easily.
As a side note, don't know if it's my location or your server, but your 74Mb image took me almost 2 hours to download.

  • After Effects Camera tools sticking

While using hotkey 'C' to cycle through camera tools in Ae CC, the tool icon 'sticks' or gets stuck on a specific tool when the tool itself has actually changed to something else. e.g., while hitting 'C' enough times to pull up the zoom tool, the cursor will actually show the orbit tool.

  • Does adobe after effects require OpenGL?

Hello, I'm purchasing a new laptop, and I'm trying to find one with a graphics card that has openGL, but I'm having a hard time doing so, but, does adobe after effects require openGL? and if so, could anyone recommend a laptop in the $400-$600 range?

    > Open GL is not mendatory but for one effect which is the cartoon
effect. And i think that pixel bender plugins needs open gl too, but
    i'm not dead certain.
No, OpenGL is not required for Pixel Bender plug-ins or for the Cartoon effect (which is written using the same underlying technology as Pixel Bender plug-ins). The Cartoon effect is certainly much faster when you have a graphics card; if you just run it on the CPU, it's quite slow.
In all cases, things that can run on the GPU (the chip on the graphics card that OpenGL is making use of) can also fall back to running on the CPU.
Personally---as Sebastien suggested---the Cartoon effect is the only thing other than interactive previews that makes me glad to have an OpenGL-capable GPU.

  • How to import original clips edited in After Effects into Adobe Premiere, without the After Effects

What is the quickest and easiest way to bring clips that were edited within after effects into adobe premiere? I just want the original clip as it is cut, without any of the after effects manipulation. I am trying to gather the cuts of a green screen project together that was compiled and edited within Adobe After Effects, so they can be rekeyed. I want to detach all effects work, and just have a straight green screen cut of the original files. Each cut though, is its own compilation. Simply importing to a new sequence doesn't seem to be the answer because I first have to uncheck many effects to find the original clip buried beneath layers of mattes and various effects. I have probably 400 different cuts, and currently my workflow is super slow just searching for the original clip in after effects, looking for the time code, then matching the original clip and timecode into Premiere. Is there a faster an easier workflow?
    Thank you

I just want the original clip as it is cut, without any of the after effects manipulation.
Then you need the original clip.
my workflow is super slow just searching for the original clip in after effects
It's what you may need to do, though. Unless you know exactly where the clips are on the hard drive.

  • Has anyone solved or worked around the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch?

I can't find any mention on any forums of the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch later than Feb. 2014. I just installed 12.2 (which was my first CC version) on my macpro and started getting the red flash frames randomly, but with increasing frequency, in my projects. I have never had this problem before on any previous computer or version for AE. The forums I've read have referenced ProRes source footage, outputs to ProRes, and lens blur. My project uses all of these things.
If there is a universally accepted solution/work around, I haven't seen it definitively. Do I not use ProRes source footage? Do I not render to ProRes 4444? Do I not use the lens blur effect? Do I give up and go back to CS6?

    Hi Keith,
I have the "same" issue with the red frames in AFX CC
I have seen them first, as I resized a prores4444 HD to a smaller format and saw the redframes in the preview window.
Setup in AFX: I created a comp from the HD Prores4444 footage and put this comp in a comp with resolution of 960x540.
The output format was again prores4444.
I shuttled through the clips in the small comp and I saw the red frames too.
When I switched to the HD comp at the same position everything was fine.
I "solved" the problem by flushing the cache, twice. Because after the first purge I was only able to render the first clip. The second one had the red frame problematic again.
Maybe It has something to do with hardware accelerated layers.
    I'm using a MacPro running OSX 10.8.5 with a Nvidia GTX680.
    Cheers
    Michael

  • I NEED A SOLUTION ON HOW TO UNLOCK THE AFTER EFFECT "Action Trailer.aep"

I NEED A SOLUTION ON HOW TO UNLOCK THE AFTER EFFECT File, "Action Trailer.aep"

We seriously don't have enough information to help you.
What do you mean by "unlock"?
My wild, shot-in-the-dark guess is that you've got some sort of template that, when you try to save, says that it's locked. If that's the case, try using "Save As" instead. If that's not your problem, refer to Todd's link and provide more info.

  • How's the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update working?

Have you installed the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update? If not, why not? If so, let us know how it's going for you.
Let us know what problems are fixed by this update for you. See this page for a long list of fixed items, added capabilities, and known issues.
Please continue to report bugs and use the crash reporter to let us know of problems that persist (or new ones).

My user experience with 10.0.1 is no different than 10.0.0:
-My #1 recurring crasher is "blitpipe disengaged".
    -Multiprocessing is still broken: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/668541 & hhttp://forums.adobe.com/thread/721486

  • How is the After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update working for you?

The After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update is available. It fixes a lot of crashes, errors, and other problems, and it adds some capabilities for RED (R3D) footage and the Apply Color LUT effect.
After you've installed the update, let us know how it's working for you.

    Todd,
I installed it over the weekend after seeing it mentioned in my RSS feed and have been using it heavily for a few days. The updater launched from within AE did not find the update. I had to go to the download page that was linked to in the feed. Installed from that download with no problem on Windows 7.
AE 10.0.1. has crashed on me twice over the weekend. Both times I was scrubbing through a composition that uses a pretty intense plug-in (Video Gogh). I would submit a bug report to Adobe or the plug-in developer, but the problem has not been repeatable. Also, an AE composition dynamically linked to PPro may have made PPro crash. I wish I could give more details on that but I was, as usual, trying to do too many things at one time.
Other than that, everything went smoothly during many hours of compositing in AE.

    Todd,
Thanks a ton. I've done searches from search engines, and I've looked at this page many times, but I had not seen this link.
I really apprreciate your help--though you probably think it was a dumb question.

  • Premier Pro Plug In Using the After Effects API

    Hello,
According to the SDK you say the After Effects API should be used in order to create Effects type of Plug In's for Adobe Premier.
We developed several AE plug in's (Effects) based on the CS6 SDK of AE and yet they don't show up / work on Premier Pro CS6.
Where can we find guidelines on how to create plug in's which work both on AE and Premier?
Is there a code sample for such Plug In?
    Thank You.

    Hi Royi,
Yes there are code samples.  If you look at the Sample Project Descriptions in chp 1 of the SDK Guide (on page 35 in the CS6 SDK Guide), the ones that are Premiere Pro-compatible are marked as such in the description.  More recent versions of the SDK will have a greater number of sample projects that are compatible with both hosts.
Also, you can refer to chp 10 of the SDK Guide on Premiere Pro, to read some general remarks on compatibility.
