Does the airport express require an AirPort Extreme?

Can it run its own wifi network? Can it extend my current system? Does it only work with a higher grade network?

The AirPort Express is a router, so it just needs a modem to get the Internet connection (the WAN port of the AirPort Express is used to connect it to the modem), not another AirPort Extreme or router.
It creates its own network, but you can configure it to extend an existing network. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145

Is there a list of AE/bonjour supported printers?

Bonjour is a transport protocol. It also provides a means of advertising a printer on a network.
Any list that shows printers that support Bonjour is generally an indication that the printer itself supports this protocol, meaning that when it is connected to the network, you can see it in your default Add Printer browser. In the case of the Airport, it also supports the Bonjour protocol and will advertise any printer that is connected to its USB port. The printer itself does not have to support Bonjour. The Airport performs this function. And like many lists, they are not kept up to date because each vendor releases several new models every quarter or half year.
There are definitely printers that don't work when connected to the USB port of the Airport. And this is more that the printer driver does not support this type of connection, mainly due to the port not supporting bidirectional communications which some printer drivers require. The Canon UFR2 and CAPT drivers are a good example of this limitation. But this is only the Mac drivers. The Windows equivalent drivers work fine when the printer is connected to the USB port.
So with you having an issue with the Windows drivers then I don't think it is a case of them not supporting Bonjour but more to do with some other component not functioning when the printer is shared by the Airport. The error message appears to have more to do with local user rights which is probably driver related. I've seen some printers that you cannot use the Windows Add Printer wizard to add them. Instead you have to use the vendors utility because of some proprietary protocol being used. Maybe this is one of those?
Now that you seen how it should work based on when you used the C3188, if you still get that error message at point 6 of adding the C1025 then it would suggest a driver compatibility issue with the Airport - which is not necessarily a Bonjour compatibility issue. So unless there was another model of HP printer driver that you could use to this C1025 and that was also compatible with the USB port of the Airport Extreme, then I would suggest your best action is to replace the printer with a model that does work. Maybe even one that has builtin wireless so you don't have to use the USB port of the Airport.

No. You may be able to retrieve that information from your ISP.

  • Does the Airport Extreme work w/Time Capsule (as prior info. said?)

Seems to me that any person contemplating the purchase of a new Airport Extreme should at least be able to see both what it is and is not capable of doing... Time Machine does not support a properly mounted Airport Extreme disk. Period. Unless this is the darker side of the product-- or lest this technical incompatibility is found to be "inappropriate" subject matter, I see no reason why this is not a valid technical question to be answered by Apple.
Why does the AE not fully support the feature-set of Leopard? Time Machine incompatibility is a serious and costly issue for all of us who bought AE's just weeks prior to Leopard's release...
Apple did indeed state (prior to release), that Leopard and Time Machine would fully support the Airport Extreme's disk-mounting feature. This is no longer the case, however, and it seems that Apple simply does not want this subject to be brought to light... This is a technical problem that can (and should) be solved via new software for the AE, or within Leopard itself.
I have been told to "call Customer Relations about this instead"-- however, no phone number was provided. In my experience, that department has proven to be incredibly difficult to connect with via Tech. Support. Why can't this issue be addressed here? Technical. Software. Hardware. Leopard.

This is a technical incompatibility, and as such, has a valid place in this forum.
Not really. Its a missing feature, not an incompatibility. Incompatibilities are things that a product should be able to do but can not due to conflicts. The AEBS was never compatible with the retail version of Time Machine, nor was it every said to be compatible with the retail version so its is a missing feature.

  • Does the airport extreme replace current wifi router?

I'm not much of a techie so please forgive my ignorance! I have just had BT internet installed with the Home Hub 4. It seems to work with my macbook, iphone, work's windows laptop etc. However, it will not connect to my wifi blu-ray player as apparently the hub does not have DLNA support (I don't know what that is but I think it's relevant). So could someone tell me if the airport extreme would solve this problem? Also, would I plug the airport straight into the phoneline or does it connect to the current hub? Finally, my main phoneline (and apparently the only one I can use for phone/internet) is in the main bedroom which means there is not full signal in the lounge, so would the airport provide better strength?
    Sorry for all the questions!

So could someone tell me if the airport extreme would solve this problem?
    No, it won't.
Finally, my main phoneline (and apparently the only one I can use for phone/internet) is in the main bedroom which means there is not full signal in the lounge, so would the airport provide better strength?
Only if you locate the AirPort in the lounge and connect it to the Home Hub 4 using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.

  • Does the Airport Extreme support Port Fowarding?

I'm trying to get the remote access for my HP Media Server running through my airport extreme.

of course it does. Read the help documents for more information.
open the airport utility application that should have been installed from the disc that came with the device. Then click the help menu item and pull down to airport help.

  • Does the Airport Extreme manage its own DNS tables??

Ok so from my experience with my new Airport Extreme it does not manage its own DNS. Am I wrong in thinking that? I have my modem setup in bridge mode so my Airport will get my external IP via DHCP. Now I am only able to ping other workstations in my local network via IP and client ID if I manually force my Airport to use a DNS service like OpenDNS. If I leave the Airport as is and let it acquire its own DNS settings it will try and use my modems IP. So when that happens I cant access any of my workstations. What am I doing wrong here???

Using AirPort Utility, the setup and configuration application for the AirPort routers, it is easy to change DNS settings to another value of your choice...which all network devices will use.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the picture of the AirPort, then click Edit
Click the Internet tab at the top of the window
Position the cursor at the beginning of the first DNS entry and type over the existing value
Do the same for the second DNS field
Click Update and alllow a full minute for the AirPort to restart

  • HT3546 Does the Airport Extreme Base Station not work with the OS X Lion?

Ever since updated to OSX Lion can't get our airport station to work.  Is it too old and won't work with this upgrade so do we need a newer airport?

Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion which should work with your older AirPort Extreme.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 6.1 and 5.6 on your Mac and use the one that you want or need at the time.

  • Can I use the AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender to my Time Capsule ?

Can I use AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender ? I own a Time Capsule and want to extend my wireless network using the AirPort Extreme just because both have wifi AC. Also, does the AirPort Extreme need to be hook up via Ethernet if I extend

The problem with extending using a wireless connection between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme is this.......
The extender can only "extend" the speed of signal that it receives. The signal starts to lose speed as soon as it leaves the Time Capsule, and the signal will lose quite a bit of speed as it passes through the ceiling due to the thick construction. The ceiling presents what is known as "interference" to the wireless signal.
So, the signal has slowed somewhat by the time that it reaches an AirPort Extreme that would be installed on the main floor.  That AirPort Extreme acting as an extender can make the signal that it receives go further, but it cannot make it go faster.  A better term than "extender" really might be "repeater".
If you install an AirPort Extreme on the main floor, the signal upstairs will be stronger than it is now, and depending on how many obstructions there are between the AirPort Extreme and the upstairs area, the signal may be noticeably faster upstairs than it is now as well.
With wireless connections between devices, there are always so many compromises and variables involved that it is just not possible to predict what the actual performance might be in your home until you try things out in your home. For that reason, it is always a good idea to understand the store's return policy in advance in case a new item does not deliver the performance that you are hoping to achieve.
Now, let's say that you are able to pull an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule to the main floor, and the AirPort Extreme is connected there in a nice, central location. Then, you could expect to receive about the same performance on the main floor that you receive in the basement, since the AirPort Extreme is receiving a full speed signal over the Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule. You can run an Ethernet cable about 330 feet, or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss.
The performance upstairs will improve as well, since the AirPort Extreme has a full speed signal to broadcast....not the slower speed signal that would receive from the Time Capsule if it connects using wireless.
If you want to achieve the same type of performance upstairs that you have in the basement and main floor, then you will need to pull an additional Ethernet cable up to the upstairs floor and add another AirPort there.
That would probably be the "best" wireless network system that you could install if you are looking at all the options. Few of us are lucky enough to be able to install the "best" network, but those that are receive remarkable wireless performance in return for their investment.

  • I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

I told my wireless network to forget two airport expresses 1 1st gen, 1 2nd gen so that I could rename them.  Now the network does not see them even when plugged in about 10 feet away from the airport extreme base station.  The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.  Does "forget" mean forever?  How to reset?

The network does recognize a totally new 2nd gen express.
Then, it sounds like you have already reset the 2nd Gen Express, and now you need to set it up again, like you did the first time. Only, this time, assign the device name that you want to the AirPort Express.
Do NOT use the name that Apple suggests.....which will be something goofy like........Sueswimsf's Red Apple AirPort Express
    Assign a simple name.....something like     2ndGenExpress

  • Does firmware update 7.1 break the Airport Extreme Base Station?

Does firmware update 7.1 break the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    See Digg

Do NOT install AirPort 802.11n Firmware 7.1
This Firmware 7.1 update for AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n should definitely NOT be installed.
    Here was my problem:
I used AirPort Utility 5.1 to install the update. It is automatic - launch the utility and it asks if you want to install the update. I said yes because I had problems getting two AirPort n base stations networking together to extend my range (I gave up finally and just used an AirPort Express to extend the range).
After the firmware update, some sites would not load at all (www.nytimes.com) and others took forever to load. And worse, I could not send any email from any of my IMAP accounts. It seemed to be a DNS problem.
I have two 802.11n AirPorts, so I finally went back to the other one (7.0) and everything worked fine. The Apple tech support guy offered to replace my broken (7.1) AirPort.
Foolishly, I wanted to make sure the problem was actually with the 7.1 update and not the AirPort itself. So I updated my second 802.11n base station with 7.1. And it casued the exact same problem (some sites not loading, no outgoing email).
The Apple tech (at this point I was speaking with a wireless specialist) put me on hold to test a few of his AirPorts to see if he could revert back to firmware 7.0 or (ii) install a clean version of 7.1 (in case the version on my drive was corrupted).
Unfotunately neither option was possible, which is a design flaw in AirPort Utility.
Apple is sending me two new AirPorts in 1-2 days, which is great service, but I will not be installing firmware update 7.1 again. Fool me once...

    AirPort Extreme Base Station

Turns out that the firmware 7.1 does not render the AEBS useless.
My problem was resolved when I turned off my DSL modem, the AEBS and the computer. Then restarted in same order going to the next one after the first is compeletly up and running. I had no problems whatsoever after that.
Seems that the firmware update makes the IPs 'stick' somehow. I would think that even a reset of AEBS might have done it but I never got to that stage.
All my computers came alive in no time.
I suggest Smith tries this. Simply reset the whole network. Ah yes, my cable modem has an internal battery, I needed to disconnect this too. Only then did the modem go into the 'acquiring' or 'distribution' mode.

  • What is the difference between the airport extreme and the airport express?

What's the real difference between the airport extreme and the airport express except for the price and the size? Does one transmit with more range?

Range is about the same, maybe a bit better on the Extreme, which has better antennas.
The AirPort Exreme has Gigabit (1,000 Mpbs) Ethernet ports and the USB port will support a hard drive.
The Express has 10/100 (up to 100 Mpbs) Ethernet ports, and will not support a hard drive at the USB port.
The Express has audio capability for AirTunes while the Extreme does not.
If you don't need to connect a hard drive and don't need the faster Ethernet ports, the Express is a good value.

Thank you so much.  Any specifics I should know about prior to connecting? This is the rear of your modem/router:
Connect a Cat5e or Cat6 cable from any of the 4 Ethernet Lan ports to the (single) socket on the Express, then go to Airport Utility (Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility) and select create a new network.
You will need to turn the wireless transmiter in the Netgear off, here is a link to the Netgear Manual in case you need to refer to it.
