Does the Base Station HAVE to be connected to a computer?

Due to some new wiring in my house, the room where my computer now is is a few rooms away from a phone outlet. I have an Apple Extreme Base Station, and this is my previous my wireless set-up:
DSL phone line goes into router/modem, which is then plugged into the Airport Extreme Base Station. The Base Station is then plugged into the Ethernet port of my G4 (which also has a wireless card).
My question is whether my computer has to be plugged into the Base Station at all, considering that it already has a wireless card? Since the Base Station is already configured, can my computer just get DSL access across the wireless net from a few rooms away via it's wireless card? Or does the Base Station have to be hardwired to a computer in order to properly operate?
Thanks in advance.

Nope, hard wiring your computer(s) to the ABS isn't required. In my case, I run a PowerMac, Mac mini and two laptops off one ABS with a cable modem input (range extended with three AirPort Express modules). None of the computers are hardwired to the ABS...all connect wirelessly.

  • How can I change the base station my airport express connects to?

I just added a new AirportExpress to my wireless network and am using it to extend the range of the network and for AirPlay. When setting it up I selected the main base station that provides the wireless network when asked to select a device for it to connect to. However, now when I view it in Airport Utility, it's the only device on the network that has only Good signal strength rather than Excellent. There is another AirportExpress conencted which has Excellent signal strength that is the closest access point to this new AirportExpress.
How can I change the setup using Airport Utility so that that's the device that it's using to connect to the network?

With a Mac using the Airport Utility.
With a PC using the Airport Utility you can install on your PC with the install disc included.

  • IPod nano: How does the display looks like during first connection with a computer?

    Hallo everybody,
Today I got my brand new iPod nano. I connected it to my computer approx. 30 minutes ago.
The window in iTunes opened and I could chouse all the details. So far, so good.
But what about the display? I can only see a black and white display with the word "iPod" in the middle of the first line and a symbol of a battery on the right.
In the middle you can see a picture of part of the cable connection and beyond the Message "Connected. Eject before disconnecting".
So, when will I see the home screen or the buttons? Does anyone know? Have I done somthing wrong? Or do I have to wait until the batterie is full for the first time?
Thank you very much an greetings from Germany,
    Petra

    Hello thetwy,
Try the reset while the ipod is plugged into the computer. Steps here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
If that does not work, use a different usb port on your computer, and/or, try the reset on a different computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't read the base station configuration

I just set up my AirPort Express using the Airport Utility, connected to Comcast high-speed Internet service. for some strange reason, the base station still has the "amber light blinking," while I seem to have no trouble with Internet connection (I'm on right now). but when I opened the utility again to set up Airtunes, I get the message, "reading base station configuration" then it fails. clearly, the base station is plugged in, connected to the Ethernet, and the signal's working... so what is going on? can somebody help?

Perhaps you configured your Airport Express into "bridge mode" by disabling its ability to distribute IP addresses. That would explain most of the symptoms you describe.
    I suggest:
    1. do a hard reset of the Airport Express by following the instructions found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
    2. with the Airport Express cabled to the cable modem, pull power to both devices. Wait at least five minutes - longer if you are patient. Then plug power into the modem and wait a minute. Then plug the Airport Express into power and wait for it to restart. Unless your Airport Express gets a solid green status light at this point, you really cannot proceed further - so try this step over again but waiting longer than you did previously before plugging the cable modem back into power.

  • Can you run a wired router from the base station?

I have a Airport Extreme base station, I bought it about 6 months ago so it's not too old. My question is can you plug a wired switch, hub or router into it? I was told no at the apple store but I don't see why you could not. All I want to do is run a 8 port switch from the base station so I can connect my other wired comps to the net. Thanks!

My question is can you plug a wired switch, hub or router into it?
Yes, just connect it to the LAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
I was told no at the apple store...
    They gave you incorrect information.

  • My TP-LINK TD-W8970 router cannot connect with my iMac even though my iPhone 5, iPad 3, W7 laptop and LG smart TV can. I get the message "No configured AirPort base stations have been found". Any ideas please?

My iMac cannot connect to my TP-LINK TD-W8970 router even though all other computers can. I get the message "No configured AirPort base stations have been found" and "No PPPoE configurations were found". Any ideas please?

Open the Network pane in System Preferences. If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner, click it and enter your administrator login password when prompted.
At the bottom of the service list on the left is a popup menu with a gear icon. From that menu, select
              Set Service Order...
A sheet will drop down showing all listed services. Drag the one that you want to use to connect to the Internet to the top of the list. Click OK to close the sheet, then close the preference pane and confirm when prompted to save the change.

  • I just had Uverse installed.  The iMac which was my base station is now connected via my household electric ground connection.  Another computer is now the base station.  I have connected my Time Capsule to my computer by USB cable, but can't set it up

I just had Uverse installed.  My iMac desktop has been the base station for my wi fi, but we had to connect it via ground wire of my electrical system and use another desktop as the base station [with windows op system].  We have connected my Time Capsule to the computer via USB cable.  I believe that will require setting up the Capsule to use Ethernet, but the instructiions on the install disc only talk about using Airport.  How can I find instructions for setting up using USB cable and Ethernet?
    Thanks!

All the manuals are listed at the head of the thread.

The TC cannot connect to the computer by USB.. it is network device.. it only connects by ethernet or wireless.. usb is for external drive or printer.

  • No configured Airport Base Stations Have Been found-but we are connected?

    Okay,
Here is an odd one...actiontec DSL Modem/Router with Airport Extreme. I applied the update, and was having problems with my external hard drive being recognized, so I reset everything-modem and airport. Now that I have, when I launch the Airport Utility, I get a message that no configured airport base stations have been found. Weird thing is I am connected, transfering files, etc. I just cant access my airport to set up my printer and time machine capsule...any suggestions?

My Mac was working perfectly fine till about a week ago.It would not connect to the internet or anything.I  swapped my computer out clean and still nothing so i gave up since I am new to the Mac. The next morning i turned it on and it worked perfectly fine. That night it started disconnecting me from the web every 5-10 mins but the funny thing was it kept saying i was connected to the internet. I have to keep turning off and back on my Wi-fi for it to work right & even doing that does not solve the problem. I went to my time machine to try to system restore my computer to an earlier date and it does not work. The airport utility comes up and says no configured airport base stations have been found.Airport utility will continue searching. I have no clue what Airport Utility even is when i got my computer furnished threw the college I was going threw at the time everything was already set up on it. The Wi-fi connected instantly. I have a MacBook Pro (OSX) with this software OS Lion. I don't have the money to get it professionally fixed so trying fix this issue on my own. Would a factory reset solve the problem?.

  • "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.
AirPort Utility 6.3.1 for Mac - Support - Apple
Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message.

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Internet connection works but I can't see the base station

My internet connection is OK (I'm able to surf and get e-mail) but I can't see my base station on just one of my computers. It shows up in the others, so I don't think it's a problem with the AEBS. I've tried re-installing the Airport Utility software, repairing permissions, etc. but it just keeps saying it can find a base station. Any ideas?

    OK, thanks for the clarification.
If you haven't already tried this, connecting an ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN ports on the base station will usually allow AirPort Utility to "see" the device.
You may need to restart the Extreme and your computer as part of the sequence.
And sometimes, the device will just "appear" after 10-15 minutes or so after a restart. I have no idea why this is.

  • Is WDS connection to the relay or the base station?

I have an Airport Extreme that I use as a WDS network base station. I also have an Airport Express that I have configured as a WDS relay that is associated with the Airport Extreme base station. How do I tell if a computer using the network is connected to the base station or the relay? I have both PCs and Macs as wireless computers that use the WDS network.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Extreme on the left. On the right, you'll see some info about the device. Jot down the AirPort ID number.
Do the same for the AirPort Express.
On your Mac, move it close to the AirPort Express
Hold down the option key while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen
Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device that the Mac is currently connected to. If you see the AirPort ID of the AirPort Express, then the WDS setup is working correctly.
You can do the same thing testing near the AirPort Extreme.
Not sure how to get this info on the PC. If you click on the current wireless connection icon and look for Properties or similar, you might see the ID number of the device that the PC is currently connected to.

  • Why is my laptop only connecting to the base station at home and not other wireless networks?

I can't connect to public wireless networks. I connect to my work wireless through 802.1X connection, but in other places my wifi just looks for the base station, and doesn't pickup available public guest networks. Any assistance is appreciated!

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
