Does the digital optical input recognise Dolby Digital?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if you could help clarify something for me. I have an Astro Gaming A30 Audio System that I use when playing my PS3. It's a gaming headset with pinpoint-accurate 7.1 Dolby and Dolby Headphone surround sound. Now, at the moment I have the PS3 connected directly to the A30 Audio System with a digital optical cable. In the PS3 settings, I have it set to output Dolby Digital 5.1 as this is the format that the A30 Audio System uses. This setting is important because it's what gives me the surround sound in my headphones. Ok, we're almost at my question...
Recently, I've been thinking of buying a capture card so I can record my game plays and upload them to YouTube. The capture card that I'm thinking of getting is the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro. Here's a link to the web page - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/.
My question is - since there is no output on the A30 Audio System, and therefore no way to route the sound into my Mac from it, I need to first send the sound from the PS3 into the Mac (for recording) and then re-send the sound from the Mac into the Astro A30s (for listening). If I do this, will I lose the Dolby Digital format that was originally output from the PS3? I don't mind recording the audio in stereo, but it's essential that the Dolby Digital sound goes to the Astro A30s. Otherwise I won't have proper surround sound. And if you went to the website, you would have noticed that they're pretty expensive. So playing in surround sound is very important to me, as I paid top dollar for them.
Anyway, if you can clarify that for me it would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Sure there's a difference it depends completely on the original sample rate of the audio recorded otherwise the best built in audio can do is 48/24, so trying to go out at 96 will force resampling[without a capable app running]. But in terms of resampling, if you use the card then you should be able to use 96/32.
Have you properly adjusted AMS settings; so that the card is in Properties at 96? Still the only governing factor there is whatever software governs the PCI card. I don't get the problem you're having here, what is the connection to the machine, optical?

I don't know anything about Newsstand but I doubt that any Adobe software is required. Apple would probably prefer that you use iBooks Author. Does the digital voice editor for ICD-SX57 work with windows 8?

I have recorded a few files on the ICD-SX57. I have installed the DVE software version 3.0
When youplug in the ICD-SX57, you get an error message.
It says "the ICD-SX57 recorder is not accessible. The IC recorder or drive is not ready."
I cannot transfer the files from the ICD-SX57 to my computer. Any ideas? Thanks.

When following the procedure to drag and drop files from the Integrated Chip (IC) recorder to your computer, if the DVE software generates an error message or the software does not react to the transfer request, your software will need to be updated to the current version.

Does the digital app version of iLife come with iDVD?

The box version is off the shelves and I have a DVD to make since my brand new computer won't do it.

Looks like only individual iLife components on the App store and no iDVD among them.
Some people have reported success in getting iDVD on a new Mac by calling Apple support and complainng or using this feedback form:

The Max order to analyze control on the Color Map tab specifies the maximum order for which you want an accurate measurement of intensity. The Color Map displays more orders than you select because it uses the additional orders for internal calculations. You can look at the Developer Zone article Performing Order Analysis with the LabVIEW Order Analysis Toolkit for more information.

HT2646 Is it possible to plug apple tv into my stereo sound system which does not have digital optical input

I have recently bought Apple tv. It works fine but I would like to run it through my sound system which is an older stereo system and does not have an optical digital input. Is there any other way of running apple tv through these older sound systems which do not have an optical input?

The easiest way is to connect your television's analog audio output to your stereo; since the television is now doing the digital-to-analog audio conversion, audio/video synchronization is preserved. Note that you may have to enable the analog audio output somewhere in your televsion's setup menus; this varies by TV model.

Digital Audio Optical Input S/PDIF on Mac Mini 10.9.2

For years prior, with my MMP 15", etc. and since the fall the Mac Mini (fall '13), the setup worked flawlessly ... until recently -- since around the time updating to 10.9.2 I have had intermittant issues with the digital I/O with my Apogee Rosetta 200 until it stopped all together last week.
I have replaced or swapped out the cables first off, to no improvement -- I called Apogee and we were able to prove the input to Apogee with an Eventide Esclipse's S/PDIF output.
I called Apple and the tech and I rebooted in safemode and saw the Audio Devices pane of Audio Midi Setup and Sound neither showed the digital input/output as being active. I sent the unit in and the logic board was replaced in view of the circumstances.
I just setup the repaired unit and now the S/PDIF out (from the Mini to the Rosetta) works -- the Sound pane shows that shows the functioning digital input however, and conspicuosly, the Audio/Midi does not (and used to).
Further, the S/PDIF in (from the Apogee to the Mac) is neither functioning nor the two panes, Audio devices and Sound, register the digial input.
Is there an issue with 10.9.2 or is it possible the one of the 1/8" analog/light pipe inputs of the Mac Mini is also not working and not determined/checked duri -- other ideas?

The optical digital audio input is a good way to get basic digital audio data into the Mac - assuming you have the audio in that format. Most vinyl digitizing folks do not.
The most common hardware configuration is to use your old vinyl turntable, connected to the proper phono input of a stereo (most modern stereos do not have this and you have to buy an outboard phono preamp). Then the recording (tape) output of the stereo goes to an audio interface that connects to the Mac with Firewire or USB, and not using the Mac optical input at all. There are dozens of famous makers of interfaces from a hundred dollars to thousands. For the casual user, I'd say $250 is a nice spot. You can get a stereo interface that takes analog input from your stereo, digitizes it, and send it to the Mac. It will also accept microphones, should you want. You'll need software to record and edit the audio (Audacity is free and works) and you can use iTunes to make CDs (although cumbersome).
There are interfaces that do have optical outputs that you could connect to the Mac. But since optical interfaces are rare on computers, and have many limitations, this isn't so common.
There are many tutorials on the net about digitizing LPs on computers.

I have a 2010 iMac. I am beginning to research a project for my mom that involves converting old recordings a group my dad was in years ago to digital from vinyl. I have a couple of input options available but I'm seeing reference to optical input on the iMacs. It appears that this would give me the best audio quality. So, my question is this: To go from a pre-amp output, what cables, converters, et cetera would I need to in order to make use of the optical input for audio? I have looked through the forums and see some mention of the subject, but nothing that seems directly to address the specifics of this.

Does the Optical audio out converts signals to 2CH PCM?

I have connected the Optical output of my Macbook pro to my AVreceiver and when playing movies with DD 5.1 or DTS, the receivers tells me that it's receiving only 2CH PCM.
is that normal? is there any config possibilty that I'm missing?

OK it works now.
in fact I was wrong, the solution was within VLC. you just have to tell it that you are using the digital optical output and the Mac does the passthrough of DTS or Dolby Digital.
just go to pref pane within VLC, then audio then check the box "use s/pdif if available"
in fact I first tried what was here

but as it still did not worked, I kept on searching and then found the solution. Then I undid the Terminal comandes in the link above and found out that it still worked.
i don't know how to do it with Quick time but I don't use it to tell you the truth. VLC is my default.

There is a setting for audio and video allowing DD output to be set for Auto (on/off if connected HDMI device can decode DD), On or Off.

I would like to connect my Apple TV to my receiver using an HDMI cable and pass thru dolby digital. I do not have optical inputs on my receiver.

This should allow me to pass thru high definition video and simultaneously decode Dolby Digital material with an HDMI connection from my receiver to my TV without the use of an optical cable (my receiver does not have an optical input). I am unable to decode 5.1 material and don't understand why this is not working. In the audio setting I have Dolby Digital output turned on.

Yes it does... but you'll need to purchase a separate Digital I/O module for Digital In (visit creative's site for more details).
Note:
If you make use of the Digital I/O module you'll lose your mic/line-in jack
