Does the make of Blank Media I use really matter?

Brand-name vs. discount DVD blanks
In its latest issue 14/2005, c't has tested blank DVDs. There was one major finding in the test of 63 brands: the quality of the blanks is not, contrary to common opinion, relative to the purchase price. Good blanks are available at 8x burning speeds starting at 60 cents. For instance, discs from Taiwan and India sometimes offer as much quality as brands from Japan. No wonder: after all, manufacturers from less expensive production sites sometimes supply blanks to Japanese brands and have gained their expertise in the meantime. Anzeige
The biggest problem with supermarket blanks is that customers cannot easily tell from the packaging which manufacturer has made which disks. One package may even contain media from various producers. The indication of the country of origin may help consumers discern the manufacturer. However, you can only be sure if you read out the manufacturer's ID on your PC. But even here, you have to be careful: one manufacturer from the Chinese peninsula of Macao imitates the ID of a Japanese brand without attaining the quality of the original. These very inexpensive imitates produced a much larger number of burning errors.
Blank DVD-Rs had much better quality than blank DVD+Rs. The reason may be the physical differences between the two burning formats. For instance, plus media work with a higher wobble frequency and have much greater radial disturbances in the record tracks than minus blanks.
In a climatic chamber test, c't simulated the ageing of the media and discovered some surprising differences: some disks that revealed very good quality just after burning were hard to read after spending time in the climatic chamber, while others that only had mediocre recording quality withstood the climatic chamber almost without deterioration. If you want to archive your data for many years, you should choose your storage media carefully.
The great risk of burning errors is still due to burning speeds that are too fast. Fortunately, in the meantime a few manufacturers of burners and blanks have managed to produce speeds up to 16x reliably. However, many recorders try to burn 8x blanks, in particular, too fast. In such cases, you should manually slow down the burning process to prevent errors and ensure the durability of the media. c't checked the optimal burning speed for each blank based on six different burner models and gives explicit recommendations for blanks for each model.
For details on the test of blank DVDs, tips on the best combination of blanks and burners, and background information on the technology of writable DVDs, see the specialist website below, "Nomorecoasters"
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/index.htm
Additionally, there is a freeware application you can download called "DVD Identifier". It can be found at http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
All you need to do is load up your blank, and it will tell you exactly who made it.

Your MacBook Pro has enough compute power to do airframe stress analysis modeling or weather forecasting. This is not a computational issue.
Most USB printers do the imaging on the Mac, then send the stream of bits to the printer. The speed of doing this depends on the Printer driver.
Some drivers will image the page in "slices", and then pause to image the next slice after the first one completes. This may also depend on whether you have enough RAM memory available to do the imaging for a whole page at a time.
You have not mentioned what Printer, or whether this is indeed the latest driver for it.

Thanks for the quick response. What you have said makes sense but there is no rhyme or reason to he data used. I reset my cellular data counter to zero so both sent and received read zero. I was connected to wifi and let the phone to go into sleep mode. I waited about ten minutes and sent myself the same email four times, each with a 750 kb attachment. It was sent to my .me address so it was push mail on my phone. Sure enough I checked a minute later while bringing the phone out of sleep mode and checked the data. It showed just 10kb sent but 1mb received which just doesn't tally with the 4 x 750kb mails received. It just isn't making sense.

I thought I had read where the iOS4 (or maybe just the iPhone 4) was supposed to be able to keep wifi connections alive while inactive. If the phone is sitting there on a charger with a wifi connection available, why use the 3G?

  • Does not make sense in evaluating data using isnull(Command.name)

    Hi,
    Environment:
    Os - Windows 7
Crystal report developed in CR2008 - .rpt developed and running successfully here with the same formula.
    VS2010
    CRforVS2010
Does not make sense in evaluating data using isnull(Command.name)  function when the report is integrated into VS2010 using Crystal report for VS2010 (13.0.2).
But the same report is running in crystal report 2008 (12.3.0.601)  report Dev environment when previewed.

Thank you and are you using the MS SQL Native 10 drivers.
And still need to know if you are using ODBC or OLE DB?
Can you copy the SQL in and use the PUBS sample database? Or import the xtreme.mdb and use one those tables. You can get it from our sample reports:

  • Why does the slider disappear every time I use it to move the window (Windows: FF 32.0)?

Why does the slider disappear every time I use it to move the window (Windows: FF 32.0)? How do I get the slider back?

Problem solved: I have been using Walnut for Firefox ver. 2.0.28 theme. For some reason this has been causing the problem. Started FF in Safe Mode, and the slider problem disappeared. Then proceeded to re-enable the Walnut theme: the problem reappeared. Disabled Walnut theme and reenabled all my other add-ons (about 6 of them). Still no problem. So, clearly there is a problem with the use of Walnut theme in FF ver. 32, at least on my Windows 7 installation.
Thanks for all your suggestions and help. Good job, all!

does the ipad2 heat up during prolonged use periods?

I have noticed it, but still cannot tell if it goes warm because the usage time or my 36°C hands holding it all the time. I tried to use it on the road without touching it with my hands, but it was difficult.
My guess, better not use it as a stand to keep ice on, ice may melt and spilling water will void the warranty.

Hi ... How does the clients (iOS devices) to configure/use the caching server to download apps from local caching server instead of App store?

    Hi,
If you want to restore a reomoved app,you need to use
Add-AppxPackage to add a signed app package (.appx) to a user account.
But we cannot extract them from the ISO.
The behavior is by design. And this is a software protection regime.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Does the macbook air get hot from use?

I am considering purchasing a Macbook Air.  I have had problems with notebook PC's in the past getting very hot.
Does the Macbook Air get hot from use?

Yes, well, virtually every computer has a fan in it; many fail their mission.
Now that you mention it, I saw no grill or mesh anywhere when I looked at the MBA at the Apple Store.  Is it where the lid meets the body?  I didn't see speakers, either, although I heard music.

  • Does the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB really make a difference

I just bought 27inch late 2012 imac. 3.4ghz i7 32gb ram NVIDIA 680MX 2gb and Im currious does the 780M 4gb really make a difference. I do not play any games. I do have 2 27 lightening bolt displays. I do alot of video editing and photograph. I have all Adobe Products and Apple software but i cannot find any where that the GTX 780m with 4gb will be any better. All I can find is if you play games then 4gb is good.
    Any advice would be great!
    Thank you in advance,

Certain applications such as Photoshop or Final Cut Pro will benefit from the higher video ram, however the GTX 680M is a very powerful card and the 2GB of ram that it comes with should be more than sufficient for most tasks.
Only extremely large files/projects will truly benefit from having the 4GB or ram that the GTX 780M supplies.
The 2013 iMac offers a performance boost over the 2012 version, however the increases in terms of CPU/GPU power are mostly modest.
The Haswell architecture was designed with mobile use as the primary focus and so areas such as energy usage were the priority.
The Nvidia 7XX graphics cards run on the same Kepler architecture as the 6XX cards, as with the Intel CPU the improvements are there but there is not a huge leap forward.

  • When I turn my ipod on why does the screen stay blank and then turn itself off?

When I turn my ipod on the normal start up screen appears with the apple logo in the middle, but then after a few seconds the screen goes blank and it turns itself off. It was working fine the other day. I even charged it overnight to make sure that it wasnt because it was out of battery. I dont know what to do, it has over 600 songs on it and around 300 photos, I know that the memory isnt full because I checked the other day and it said I had around 1GB left. I cant do anything on at all because the screen just goes blank and then turns itself off. Please help, thank you

Well, I strongly suspect that a gig isn't quite enough "extra" storage to allow operation.
However, first, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • DOES THE STAGED APPL_TOP APPROACH CAN BE USED TO APPLY ATG RUP 6

    All,
We are planning to upgrade technology stack from ATG RUP 2(11.5.10 CU2) to ATG RUP 6
With our complex apps env. with staged APPL_TOP approach the downtime requirement will be reduced to half.
i, Now the issue is that :
    Metalink Note:242480.1 stats that :
" AD level of your Staged and Production Applications system must be identical and The Staged APPL_TOP approach cannot be used to apply AD mini-packs"
    i.e
    Section 2: Prerequisites
    4. Apply prerequisite patch 3285255
This patch provides the adphmigr.pl utility used in Section 5.
    Note
The AD level of your Staged and Production Applications system must be identical. This is
required to successfully export and import patch history information. The Staged APPL_TOP approach
cannot be used to apply AD mini-packs or the new products patch associated with a Maintenance Pack
    (such as 2644311).
Now in prod as we said we don't have ATG RUP6
    13:31:48 CRP01a> select bug_number from ad_bugs
    13:32:25 2 where bug_number in ('4712847' ,'5161676','5161680','4229931','4605654');
    BUG_NUMBER
    4229931 ====> Post AD.I..1 Consolidated 07/27/05
And in dev instance where we followed normal procedure for applying ATG-RUP6 , we have
    SQL> select bug_number from ad_bugs
    2 where bug_number in ('4712847' ,'5161676','5161680','4229931','4605654');
    BUG_NUMBER
    4229931
    4605654
    5161676
    5161680 ==> PATCHSET 11I.AD.I.DELTA.5
As you can see patchset levels are 11i.AD.I before & after ATG RUP6 upgrade.
And in the note when it was mentioned
"The AD level of your Staged and Production Applications system must be identical. "
Finally my the question is that : Do they mean AD PATCHSET level or the consolidated / DELTAS released on top of AD.I ?
    Any help is appricated.
    Thanks,
    Sashi.

Staged APPL_TOP can be used to apply maintenance packs, so ideally you should be able to use it to apply ATG RUP 6. For the AD minipack, you should apply patch (5161676) - 11i.AD.I.5 as a pre-req. patch before you apply ATG RUP 6.

  • Why does the MBP manual warn you from using glass cleaner on your display?

I think the title says it all ...
    Thanks for your answers!
    null

I think the main reason is that there can be a lot of things on the market passing for glass cleaner the world over and Apple has no way of knowing what a user might end up applying, so it's safest for them to say use water, which by the way isn't such a bad idea.
Also to consider, a lot of glass cleaners come in spray bottles. There are risks to using this type of applicator around a computer. One risk for example is the nozzle isn't pointing at the screen, or is partially clogged, and it squirts errantly, like into the keyboard. Another risk is that too large an amount come out of the applicator and a big drip runs down the screen and goes behind the bezel where it can do a lot of harm.
If you do use a glass cleaner, especially from a spray bottle, always apply it to the cloth you are using as a wipe rather than try to apply it to the screen. And if you use a spray bottle, move far enough away from the computer when you spray into the cloth so that a bunch of aerosol droplets don't settle all over the computer.
