Does the midi mixer in the environment internally or externally with Logic?

Does the midi mixer in the environment internally or externally with Logic Pro 9?  I notice that when I create midi files in Logic, I have to change the parameters (banks, volume, pragram changes etc.) in the event list window, which take a good amount of time to do.  Just wondering if that was normal operation, if it could be done from the midi mixer as opposed to the regular mixer.

I have to change the parameters (banks, volume, pragram changes etc.)
There is a special Logic keycommand "Insert Instrument Midi settings as Events". Assign some keys to it, select the midi region you want to insert to (instrument settings like "Bank", "Prg", "Vol", "Pan" etc) and hit that key command which will insert the track settings into the midi region.
BTW. After the operation you can open the Event List for that mid region and check if this works...

    HP G62-154P/WINDOWS 7

    Hi Jeff
    Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, I tried burning to different burners and got the same results.
I've played it back on different DVD players as well as the DVD player in Windows and same thing.
    I've used DVD+R and DVD-R.
I've reburnt older projects and they all came out fine.  It's just this particular project.  I've even removed the Preference file ...  I've even redid the project from scratch.
Strange .....  All the audio works fine for the clips and the motion menu in the chapters menu.  The same motion menu and audio is used in the man menu and that's where the audio is not heard.
I think it's Encore doing the burning that's the problem?
I'm trying one more thing and that is to create a DVD image (VOBs) and then using a different burning software (Nero) to burn the DVD.
I'll even try to create 2 empty menus with just the same motion menu and audio playng.  There is something funky going on here ...

  • Not too hot about the jazz the Apple drum loops, does anyone know of a good drum software to interface with logic? Or, a loops source to get quality brush samples.

Logic has no decent jazz brushes in there drum loops!! What to do???

Hi j232..for interfacing drum i would suggest Superior drummer 2.0. It has all the loops u want plus it keeps getting the expansion packs (i mean u have to buy it )which are genre based so as of now it has everything from vintage kits to new age. Also it says on the site(toontrack.com) that its tested with logic.
I used it in mixcraft on my PC. and it was very easy, real and satisfying for me. Ordered it now for my new mac to interface with logic pro.
    hope that helps

    =====================
    Repairing the mysteriously muted Mac
The background on the issue is that there’s a small sensor switch inside the headphone port. When you insert a headphone jack, the sensor understands what's what and changes the sound output setting to Headphones. If you insert a jack for digital audio output, the device changes to Digital Out. When you remove the jack completely, it should read Internal Speakers.
The spirits tell me that there’s a very good chance that you recently had something jacked into this port—a set of headphones or a cable leading to powered speakers, for example. When you removed the jack, something in the port prevented the sensor from tripping correctly. That’s why you see Digital Out instead of internal Speakers.
The solution is to force the sensor to do its job. The safest way to do that is to simply run a jack in and out of the port a few times. Much of the time, this takes care of the problem by correctly tripping the sensor. If that doesn’t work, there may be gunk in the port. Before turning to more invasive techniques, get a can of compressed air, attach the small tube that fits the nozzle, and blast a few shots of air into the port. With any luck, that should dislodge the gunk and the port will operate as it should.
If that doesn’t work, find a foam-tipped swab that fits (electronics shops generally carry them), dip it in rubbing alcohol, and gently insert it into the headphone port in an attempt to wipe away any stubborn gunk. I recommend foam rather than cotton swabs because the cotton variety might leave threads behind. (This same technique works well with misbehaving headphone ports on devices such as iOS devices.)
It's possible that gunk has nothing to do with it. Rather, it may be that the switch just needs a subtle nudge. If a jack or swab doesn't work, I've heard of people successfully resetting it with a deft poke of a toothpick.

  • Im looking for the cheapest and smallest transport control surface to use with logic 9(and X when i upgrade my lappy). usb.

Ive seen the presonus faderport but there looks to be lots of problems? is this still the case or has it been fixed?
Or have you any info on godens...if there even is?
    cheers.x

If I could make a suggestion. I too have the Axiom49 and love it. I would not get rid of it. But for control of Logic, I use the Presonus FaderPort. It works flawlessly. Plug it into a USB port, add the Mackie HUI controller in the preferences, set the input and output (of that control surface) to the FaderPort, and your done. Motorized fader, limitless pan knob, etc. You may want to look into this little gem. It will be less expensive than a new MIDI controller, that's for sure.

  • Alterations in the Environment window don't do anything to the midi

The midi signals for Yamaha DTXplorer are off from GM. The snare (G0) and bass drum (A0) output notes do not trigger snare (D1) and bass drum (C1). I hear all the other drums. The snare and bass drum do record (but not on channels that make any sound).
I am a novice to both MAC and Logic Pro.
I have the midi out of the drumset going USB right into my MAC.
    I've gotten as far as...
    1. Environment window>clicks and Ports
    2. Verifying the channels that DTX triggers for snare and bass drum.
    3. Changing the output notes to D1 & C1.
    Nothing changes with the sound.
In fact, I can change the output notes for drums that are set up correctly and they don't change either.
None of the alterations I do in the Environment window seem to do anything to the midi signals!
Do I need to activate or save the changes? If so, how (precisely)?
    Thanks in advance.

    1) You don't want to create an external MIDI - that would be for logic to play an external device. You want a software instrument.
    B) It sounds as if you have created a 'mapped instrument' in the environment. Maybe you are using a template that has one built in. I can't help you with that because it crashes Logic for me when I use that.
So I do it like this:
Very straightforward to set up. The thing called "Alesis mapping" is a transformer, which is open. If you click initialize at the bottom you get a 1 to 1 ramp (notice that the 3rd button in the second row is set to "use map"). The numbers in the bottom right correspond to note numbers in this case. 0-127 (C-2 is 0, C#-2 is 1, etc.). I forgot to put it on one where you could see the number differences, but you can see it in the graphic map. In my case I needed to reassign 4 notes. So if the number in the bottom right says 25, the number in the next box says 56. You can see that as the column spike. Now when I grab the choke on the cymbal it sends out note #25, which this transformer turns into note #56. The hardest part of my method is converting note names (D2) into the proper number (0-127) that is what the monitor is there for - confirmation.
Under status where it has an = and then "note" is there so you don't accidentally remapped the hi-hat CC# (probably CC4). My kit sends a note for cymbal choke, but yours may send an aftertouch message, which will pass through unaltered.
    Save this as a template.

  • Which is the best MIDI interface to use with Logic 7 ?

    Hi folks :o)
Firstly, thanks all for any advice you can give. I'm a pro user, but right in the middle of a major upgrade (G4/OS9/CubaseVST32 >> G5/OSX/CubaseSX3/Logic7) & feel a huge learning curve coming on!
    The situation is this:
I have a Steinberg Midex 8 midi interface, plus a MOTU MTPav in the cupboard. The Midex took place of the MTPav because it had much better midi timing under OS9 with Cubase... The Midex8 drivers for OSX, however, are still beta & a pile of rubbish. (It keeps losing communication with the G5.) I'm fed up with how bad Steinberg have been sorting (not!) these problems out (not to mention the fact that Cubase SX3 can't recognise my 'studio' created in Audio Midi Setup either.. arghh!), so I'm considering jumping ship & going entirely to Logic in one hit, plus whichever is the best midi-interface for this software & OSX.
As food for thought, I'm currently thinking of tracking down a 'Unitor 8', having made the (perhaps wrong) assumption that it'd work 'best' with Logic seeing as it was made by Emagic. BUT, despite a lengthy search in Logic 7's manuals & this forum, I can't find any mention of Emagic's 'Active Midi Transmission' protocol & whether or not Logic 7 supports it; AMT is the only reason I'd buy the Unitor. (I've got all the other bases covered with the MTPav.) I'm also concerned about the long-term support issues regarding drivers for the Unitor 8 & OSX; ****, I'm having enough problems with Steinberg & their Midex 8 (which is still a current product in theory!) without throwing Emagic & a midi interface that's no longer manufactured into the pot...
So..... What do you folks feel is the best midi interface to use with Logic 7 as regards tight midi timing & system reliability? Can anyone out there with a big midi setup categorically say "I've got one (or more) of these MIDI interfaces, it works beautifully under OSX & Logic 7, & the MIDI timing is rock-solid, even when put under heavy midi 'duress' " ??
Many thanks again in advance for any feedback!
Your new Logic Pro virgin ;o)
    Jason

Thanks for your reply folks. It's good to hear a number of you are having good results with your MTPav - I guess I'll pull mine out of the cupboard in that case!
As an aside, it's been interesting to note how difficult it's been to get a clear answer from companies (be it shops or Apple) as to whether or not Logic 7 supports 'Active Midi Transmission' on the old Unitor 8 MkII..... (The reference manual has one mention of it in the index, yet points to a page that doesn't say anything about AMT at all!)
If anyone here DOES have a clear answer about AMT with Logic 7, I'd be very interested to hear about it... thanks.
    Kind regards,
    JC

  • Connecting kurzweil sp88 to GB I want to connect my Kurzweil sp88 to GB. The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. It also has the old style MIDI plug ins. I've got the MIDI out connected to my MacBook Pro via USB adapter.

I have my Kurzweil connected to my MacBook Pro via an adapter (old style MIDI from Kurzweil to USB adapter connecting to Mac). The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. Can anyone please tell me which of the channels I should use? Also, should I leave the MIDI In cable out of the Kurzweil? Thanks for as detailed an answer as possible. If you like you can respond directly to me at [email protected]

First of all I do not own this keyboard. But a quick look at the manual (found on the internet) says that when first powered up the SP88 is in Internal Sounds mode. Meaning you hear the sounds selected when playing the keyboard. It also stated that the default Midi Transmit Channel is Midi Channel #1.
Looks like you would need to go to the SP88 Keyboard's MIDI SETUP and simply select LOCAL OFF. Now the keyboard should be ready to transmit Midi Out only and no internal sounds should be heard.
Next you may or may not need to do this but you might need to go into the Utilities Folder found in your Applications Folder on your Mac and double click AUDIO MIDI SETUP the keyboard Icon. Figure #1 below.
Next you need to make a physical connection from the Midi Out of the SP88 to the Midi In on your Midi Interface. Figure #3 below. You may need to Click on Add Device first. Figure #2 below.
In the examples shown below I have a Yamaha Electronic Drum Kit that is Midi Out only... not USB out. I had to plug a Midi cable from the Midi Out Port on the back of my Drum Module to the Midi In Port on the back of my Motu 828 Audio Inferface which is connected to my Mac. Next I created the Audio Interface and Drum Module "Devices" as mentioned above.
I then double clicked on the Drum Module and made my Midi Out Selections. Figure #4 Below. And once it was setup and the icons closed I used my mouse to draw a virtual cable connection from the Drum Module Out to the Audio Interface In. Figure #3 below. This is how I got my Midi Devices to talk to one another.
Once you have made your setup as I have outlined create a MIDI Instrument Track in Garageband, select an instrument for example a Piano then Record Enable that track in Garageband and see if you now hear what you are playing. In this example the SP88 is a Midi Controller only and you will only hear sounds selected in Garageband which is what you want.
Keep in midi your setup may be different than mine. You can keep your SP88 Keyboard on the default Midi Channel #1. That would be a good place to start. Garageband receives Midi on all channels.

  • Has anyone figured out how to make the Yamaha 01V96i mixer work with Logic 9.1.8

Has anyone figured out how to make the Yamaha 01V96i mixer work with Logic 9.1.8 as a control surface ?

    In YAMAHA01v96i:
Go to DIO/SETUP select Generic DAW. Go to MIDI settings page and set the desired port (personally I use Number 1), Select the same audio frequency you use in your DAW (I use 44.1KhZ)...at this point You should save a scene in you 01V96i to avoid to repeat all the procedure again.
Open studio manager, go to patch and set the input port from 17 to 32 respectively to USB1-USB16 (this will give you the return from you DAW to the 01v96i
Save again the scene overwriting the old one.
    in LOGIC
Click on preferences, select Audio then select 01v96i, then click on control surface and select Mackie design Baby HUI and in the midi session set the same port that you've been setting on the Yamaha 01V96i (Port 1 if you follow this example).
    That's more or less it.
    It worked for me...so far

  • The MID-7604 puts out a lot of noise, where can I get isolated cables for it?

I'm using a MID-7604 stepper motor driver. I'd like to reduce the ground loop noise in the system that I am measuring on my PXI-5152 (through a series of transducers, etc.) by using an optical or transformer isolator for the 68 pin VHDCI cable that connects the motor driver to the computer. Does such a thing exist or are there other methods to mitigate the noise? I'd prefer to have the MID-7604 and the computer connected to the same circuit/I don't really want to buy a gigantic isolation transformer/surge protector just to plug in the MID-7604.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    OlliesCamel,
The devices I'm using are PXI-5152 for signal acquisition, TEGAM 4040B for amplification, MID-7604 to drive stepper motors (which have specifications shown here http://www.sherline.com/stepspec2.pdf) to turn a Sherline rotational stage. The transducers are both Harisonic I30508T 5 MHz 3.5" focus transducers.
I have scanned in a drawing I made up of how everything is physically connected entitled Electrical connections.PDF. Also, the noise I am referring to is the noise that is shown in picture noiseMID7604.jpg. (It is labeled)
For the initial laser noise I'm getting an optically isolated RS232 which should fix that problem. On the MID-7604/7602 stepper power motor drive user guide and specifications it shows on page 13 that a wire should go from the 3 position to the case for grounding. It also shows that it seems to be attached to the shield of the shielded wire. Is this necessary as long as I have the ground connected to the case of the motor or? The way I have it now I just have a separate wire in the bundled/shielded cable that is going to the case but it isn't connected to the shielding itself.
The settings for the amplifier and the PXI are for 1 M ohm impedance.
As you can see, my signals don't have a very large SNR, so any sort of motor noise is problematic, particularly since the noise I've shown doesn't stay in the same place during the test. It tends to move around/be on top of my signals at random times even though it doesn't show that in this particular picture. It is problematic since I'm taking many measurements (20,480 acoustic signals per scan, etc.).
I've tried averaging (256 times) and filtering (10 MHz low pass filter is the lowest I can go), however, the noise still persists a bit since it happens to somewhat fall under the same frequencies, etc. The averaging does help, but I'd like to run the test faster and so eliminating that noise would help me in that regard.

  • How do you change the midi channels of a region?

Lets say i have a region recorded on midi channel 1, how do I change the notes to be midi channel 2? Thanks

    Depends.
First of all, are you talking about a MIDI region or an Audio region (Audio regions can "be on a MIDI channel", so to speak, if they contain controllers, i.e., volume, pan, etc.).
So let's say you're talking about MIDI regions for now.
The first order of business is to recognize that the actual channel of the MIDI events contained in the region is determined primarily by the MIDI channel that your controller is sending on. For simplicity sake, let's say your controller sends on channel 1, and the track you're recording on is set to play MySynth on channel 1.
If you're wanting to change the channel from 1 to 2, chances are you want to do this to assign this part to play a different sound on a multi-timbral synth. Let's say that the MySynth object -- as seen in the Environment -- is indeed a multi-timbral synth. If the synth selected for that track is currently assigned to play MySynth 1 (i.e., channel 1), just change it to MySynth 2 (from the track's menu).
Now, if you opened the Event Editor, you'd see that the channel of the MIDI data is still on channel 1! This is normal. Logic is able to "channelize" the data when you select a destination instrument that is on a different MIDI channel from the one that the data was recorded on. So if your track is now set to play MySynth 2, you can go into the Event Editor all day and change the MIDI channel of the data, but it will still be channelized to channel 2 because that track is assigned to play MySynth on channel 2.
There are many many reasons why you might still want to change the MIDI channel of the data in the Event Editor despite the channelizing that goes on. But without going into a whole shpiel about these kinds of applications, just know that the primary way to change the MIDI channel is to select an instrument on the desired MIDI channel.

  • Where are the MIDI Apple Loop files stored?

Am I the only one that wonders where the MIDI files are stored for GarageBand? The ones installed by iLife, the Jam Pack additions and any custom MIDI loops I create are nowhere to be found. Spotlight doesn't show any MIDI loop name I search and I have spent an entire day scrounging through just about every folder on my Mac looking for these puppies! Does ANYONE know where these files are stored?!!?

    Alright, then...
You appear to be correct, in as much as the developer specification for the Core Audio Format has provisions for a "MidiChunk". Thank you so much for at least pointing me in the right direction. I still couldn't find any explanation for this issue on the website you referred me to (and had previously visited), but I did find a small explanation in an obscure Apple Tech Document.
What I would still like to know is:
    1. How do you access the MIDI data within the .caf files? I haven't found any application that will extract or access that data.
    2. When I create custom MIDI sequences within GarageBand and save them to the Loop Library (e.g. a piano track named "hoity-toity-supercilious-wankersequencedeluxe"), they show up in the Loop Browser but I still can't locate the actual file anywhere on my Mac. I know I can just open up a GarageBand file in Logic and then export the MIDI file out from there. But, I would REALLY like to just be able to find the file to begin with and skip that extra stage.
If I could just find the answers to these burning questions. Oh, and (singing) if I only had a brain!
Thanks again for getting me this far!

  • Is the Audio Mixer Working?

    Is the Audio Mixer Working?
I am following step by step in Steve Grisetti’s book to learn how to use the Audio Mixer on the Action Bar, in the Tools section.
As I read the information, when playing a video project (with audio), opening the Audio Mixer should
    (1) allow volume adjustment, and
    (2) reveal operating audio-level meters (which are like VU meters in old analogue equipment).
HOWEVER, I find that opening the Tools function immediately STOPS the video from playing, of course then also stopping anything related to the Audio Mixer.
So, how does one open/activate the Audio Mixer (or anything under the Tools function) while the video (including audio) is playing?
    Thank you,
    Howard
P.S.  I'm editing this post to add the following:
In my continuing practice with this new-to-me program, I just discovered the "Adjustment" function of the upper menu bar.  Similar to the operation of the Tools function, as soon as I click on the function, my playing video/audio project STOPS.  I cannot edit the engage the volume adjustment while the project is running.
While it's generally unreasonable for such a beginner as myself to state that I know how this program is supposed to operate, I have read both in Steve's book and in this user forum that audio should be adjustable WHILE the project is running.

Yes, I located Adobe’s so-called "Help", but it seems to offer only thematic tutorials, not a traditional help function in the form of an Alphabetical Reference Index.
With the traditional Alphabetical Index, one need only provide a word or two -- such as "Snap To" or "Sharpen" -- and the Help function takes the user DIRECTLY to a definition or explanation of that particular function or concept, not unlike a very comprehensive Index at the back of a well-written manual.
I also own the FULL version of Photoshop CS5. The Help function has gradually moved to referencing Adobe’s Internet support, but there is still the traditional indexed "how to" and other help explanations, though they are more difficult to access than in the older versions of the program.
I am a new user who (1) is trying with considerable time and effort to learn PE-11 and (2) has purchased Steve’s book.  However, because I have not found an Index-type source of help associated with PE-11, I have come this User Form far more often than would be necessary if Adobe had spent the time and money to include an Alphabetical Reference Index as part of the program, and not merely some general "how to" categories on their website.
If blame is to apply, it is on Adobe.  I have no idea how any truly new user (defined as never before having used ANY video editing software) could get by without the two of you (Steve and Hunt) on this User Forum.  I assume you are both paid consultants or contractors for Adobe, and I hope they’re paying each of you a Caterpillar-Front-Loader full of cash for what you do.  But really, a lot of small items posted to this User Forum would be unnecessary if Adobe had incorporated with PE-11 the type of Alphabetical Reference Index suggested above.
    My two cents.

  • How do i Model the MID 7654

I am trying to produce a simulink model in Matlab of my force control system ( A servo motor , connected to the MID 7654, which is connected to the NI 7344 flex motion board, A force sensor connected to ADC-1 closes the loop). In order to complete the system transfer function i need to know what output voltage is being applied across the servo motor as it is this (if my understanding is correct) , which determines the current through the motor, the growth rate of which is goverend by the motor inductance. I know the NI 7344 outputs a signal between +/-10V, how is this acted upon by the MID7645??, the only onfo given in the manual is a current output, surely there must be an accompanying gain applied to the voltage which is then applied to the mot
or which then detemines the current running through the sytem. Any help which could help me better understand the system and produce a model would be much appreciated !.

There is no "characteristic" transfer function for our MID motor controller. That transfer function is going to be the result of the MID in combination with the motor that you are using. The output of the MID is going to be in current. That current is going to be related the current that you select with the MID's jumpers, and the voltage input that the MID receives from the Motion Control Board. This output is characterized by two charts that you can find in the MID's user manual.
    MID's user manual
That current output plus the characteristics of your motor should allow you to calculate the relevant transfer function.

  • "The MIDI Server can't be opened" Mountain Lion

Hello all, so I'm encountering this issue when I try to open up the Midi Window in audio midi preferences. I have tried emptying the Midi Drivers folders, restarting repairing permissions of the hard disk, both from recovery mode and with the system running. I have also used Onyx to do a full automation on my disk, and disk warrior to service the disk as well. I'm still having this issue.
it's making Ableton Live 9 hang on startup for 5 minutes, and upon opening will not let me select the midi controllers that I have plugged in. I don't think this error is caused by any recent midi driver installations, as I haven't really installed anything recently, and had all my controllers working just days ago
For reference sake, this issue exists on my iMac (mid 2011), and not my MBP (mid 2010). I'm using the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and the most recent version of ableton and all of my other midi controllers, and software are totally up to date. The Midi controllers I have are my Maschine MKII, M-Audio Oxygen 25 3rd Gen, and my NI Komplete Audio 6 Interface. As I said, they were working perfectly just earlier this week, and only recently began to act up and give me this error message.
I'm at a a total loss here, as anything I do doesn't remedy the situation, and I still cannot access the midi preferences, or use any of my controllers.
I sincerely hope somebody can help me rectify this, as it's becoming absolutely detrimental to my production, and it's a complete waste of my time, over something that I don't think should be causing this big of a deal.
Thanks in advance, I hope to hear back real soon from you folks.
    Cheers
    Chris

Just noticed you are using 2  M-Audio MIDI devices, the MIDISport Uno and the MIDI portion of the 410.
Let me clarify... the M-Audio 410 Core MIDI driver is not compatible.
The Uno is probably a system compliant device that doesn't use a driver, I'm betting the 410 installs a MIDI driver with the installation package.
