Does the mini-DVI work via bootcamp in windows XP?

Hello everyone!
I got a Macbook and sometimes I run Windows XP on it. I been trying to get the mini-DVI working with an external display, but I got no luck with it. I cannot find any way to get it working.
I plug it in and my display on my MacBook flash once like it usualy does when in OS X and I plug something in. But after that nothing happens, I tried opening the graphic properties but it can not find any other display. I tried all I can think of but it cannot work.
Is it even supposed to work? I heard something about the mini-DVI not working in windows. And if it supposed to work, how can I fix it?

I solved it, I updated my intel drivers. Then I plugged my monitor in, then I went in display properties and put the second monitor on extend and use as primary. Restarted and it started working, then I went into intel settings and chose primary Hope I can help others!

I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port, but just wanted to check to make sure. My main goal is to get surround sound out of my powerbook. To do this by simply adding a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter would be GREAT!

Yup, no audio, unfortunately. The audio will have to transmitted separately via the analog audio output.

I Purchased Photoshop Elements 12 it came with a Windows and a Mac Disc. My Son just got a Mac. I was wondering if I can install Elements on his Computer using the serial number I received from the Redemption code that I used for my Windows Laptop?

No. You need to buy a separate license or do a cross-platform change via Adobe.

I cannot use any external monitor, it appear like the port doesn't work , i'm using the mini-dvi port with a VGA adaptor ,

I've always used the port normally with different monitor but by a couple of weeks it appear like no signal come out.
Does Anyone knows what can i do ? i.e. How to check or reset the Mini-dvi port ? or if there's any key on the keyboard that can habilitate it or not ?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You don't have to do anything to make the port work. Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, try with another monitor to see if it works or another cable. If you haven't got another display, take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller, so Apple will test the port and see if it works correctly

Since you say that the same connectors work on your other TV is suggests that the fault is not in the connectors but your Vizio TV. I would check the settings on the Vizio TV. Verify that is is set to receive HDMI input. Perhaps you or some one else has inadvertently changed them. Pressing the wrong buttons on a remote control device can do that. (I am assuming no changes were made in SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS)

Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

It's a VGA adapter. Nothing special about that. If your Samsung monitor supports VGA then it will work.
But why not go completely digital and use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to skip the analog conversion? It also supports passing audio over HDMI.

Using the mini DVI - DVI cable with HDMI LCD screen?

Hi,
I bought the apple mini DVI - DVI connector to connect my imac to the back of my plasma. I have a 3 meter DVI cable to extend the mini DVI - DVI connector.
It worked fine but the plasma is not so good for my purposes as i am using the set up to display images.
I have just bought an LG LCD TV for a very good price.
However the LG LCD does not have DVI socket! It has HDMI.
Is there a cable available that is DVI (female) - HDMI?
And will this work in theory?
Any advise is much appreciated...

IMac G5 (no iSight) TV-OUT stuck, even after unplugging the mini DVI adapto

Hello.
I have an iMac G5 (2.0Ghz, no iSight) for some time now and everything has worked great. I also have the mini DVI adaptor, which connects the iMac to an analog TV. This connection has also worked fine over the course of about a year now. Last night, after watching a movie on the TV through the iMac, I unplugged the adaptor, expecting the iMac to detect the unplugging, and revert to the original resolution, however that has no worked. After selecting "Detect Displays" from the menu, nothing happened. Restarting also hasn't worked. When I tried to plug in the adaptor back, the output to the TV also worked great, but unplugging changed nothing.
I tried to fix permissions on the drive, and though there had been permissions to be fixed, after doing so, nothing changed.
I tried booting from the installation CD, that also didn't work.
I tried booting from my iPod, on which another operating system is installed, that also didn't work.

Abaut the mini DVI

I already purchased the cable for the mini DVI port, the DVI to video and s-video cable.
It works well, but i was wondering what can exacty do with this cable, i already connected it to a tv and duplicate the image so i can see everything i do on a tv proyector etc, but what other advantages do i have?, can i send images from the tv to the computer, capture video from the tv or something and record it on my macbook?
Cause i havent figure how to do it if its possible.
Or what other functions do i have with this cable?

the only thing that that particular cable does it to show the computer screen on the tv screen. if you want to capture tv digitally, you would need something like one of the elgato systems(elgato.com). hope this helps.

Is the Mini-Dvi adapter suppose to click into the back on the Mac mini? It does on my mac book but not on the Mac mini. I sort of have to just jam it in there, no nice clicking sound, and it does not feel very secure.

If after 'jamming it in there' it actually works, then at least you know it's the correct type of adapter. However, if it doesn't work, you are definitely not inserting it correctly or into the correct location. In either case, you may have a damaged port - all the connections on the rear when applied correctly with anything like a decent quality standard type connector should work smoothly. You should never have to 'jam' anything into the back of your mini.

Can you have the mini dvi, or any output video source, on all time?

I work for a University in a department that supports classroom technology and other various A/V type things. We recently set up a "collaborative cluster" computer lab. On each table there is 5 iMac's that can be used to work on project or class assignment independently, but there is also a LCD mounted on the wall at the each table so that at the press of a button that particular iMac's image can be displayed for the group to see. My question is, is there a way to always keep the mini dvi port on, because once you switch to another iMac or the teachers station it doesn't recognize that a second display is there anymore. If there is such a thing, would it also stay there after a restart.

First verify that the problem is in the display's cable, not the computer's Mini DisplayPort. Can you try a different display with your computer, or a different computer with your display? If not, try holding the plug firmly in the computer while wiggling the cable near the plug. If that doesn't cause problems, but moving the plug does, then the problem may be the port on the computer.
If it is the display's cable, it can be replaced, but it does require some work

Does anyone know if the mini-DVI connector is patented by Apple?

I long been puzzled with Apple's fascination with wierd video connectors. It goes all the way back to Mac IIX machines with 13 pin D connectors when everything else in the civilized world had EGA or VGA D-sub connectors. Then came a slew of 7100s and Powerbooks with odd square connectors, etc.; meanwhile the rest of the world trudged on with VGA d-sub connectors.
I can see Apple was trying to capture market back when Apple-badged Monitors were a bigger piece of Apple's business. Their old moniors had captive cords that could plug directly into their strange connectors. That's not true with the annoying mini-DVI connector - MacBooks need the adapter no matter who makes the monitor. Now it looks like there's yet another new micro-DVI connector on MacBook Air machines.
There doesn't seem to be an engineering reason for the MacBook to have the mini-DVI. There is plenty of room availavle to put in a full size connector.
I think we may be looking at patent issues. Not so much Apple trying to get greedy with their own proprietary connector, but perhaps, Apple not wanting to pay the other other peoples' royalties for the more recognizable connectors.
Itwould impact sales to have no video out connector. Apple can use its own non-royaly connector, and offload the cost of the licensed connector to only people that really need it, in the form of a dongle.
We're paying premium prices for Apple products anyway, so I don't think it would be that much extra burden for us to cough up a few more dollars to have a more compatible connector.
Anybody that's worked for an A/V department has long grumbled about Apple laptops' weird video connectors. A lost video dongle for an Apple costs at least $20, whereas a standard male/male two meter VGA cord is about $4.
I rececently bought some mini-DVI to VGA dongles at a computer retailer. The Apple brand and the house brand were both $25. The house brand cable was a little longer, but not as well made as the Apple branded dongle. I bought the Apple branded dongles, suspecting they'll be a little more durable and make more reliable contact with the mini-DVI socket after repeated uses.

Portege R500: cannot connect the remote DVI monitor via Dynadock

Hello,
I just connected Dynadock (DVI) with my Portege R500. The notebook would be supported -- according to Toshiba -- but my experiment confirms that Dynadock is not able to access DVI port. This implies, that Dynadock is nothing more than USB HUB.
My setup: Vista 32b Business (CZE edition), latest fixes, Toshiba R500.
Software: latest dynadock software 2.3c.
Symptom: I cannot connect to the remote DVI monitor via the dynadock, only two external panels with 800x600 are available, but Vista does not allow me to choose them.
More info: Dynadock Software requires to run without Microsoft Defender, else it blocks service:DisplayLinkService; file:C:\Program Files\DisplayLink Core Software\DisplayLinkService.exe
If you disable MSDef, the message "error 2738" appears when you connect the dynadock and when Vista tries to install a missing drivers for you.
Yes, I do know the VBS issue, and the problem is not caused by VisualBasic -- VBS "Hello World" runs.
If you still believe, that Toshiba Dynadock is compatible with Toshiba R500, then press Fn-F5 and peek at your logs and you must find something like:
In English: igfxext.exe throws an exception 0xc000000d, offset 0x0000f9f8.
I welcome any comments, hints etc. If you are able to pass this bug report to a responsible engineer, do so please.

I still believe you are wrong. Toshiba Dynadock is not designed for Toshiba products only. It is universal product and can be used on every notebook. To be honest I believe it is better to use it with new, more powerful, notebooks.
When you sat your notebook model is listed as compatible I believe you. Why not? Toshiba can list all newer notebooks. No problem at all. To be honest I am also interested to buy Dynadock but after reading your posting I wanted to see how it works exactly.
I have contacted my friend because he works in one big electronic store and I was lucky because he had Portege M500 too.
He was very nice and offered me to test Portege M500 SSD model with Dynadck PA3542EY1PRP. I hope you have the same model. It is DVI model. So I have done follow:
- Portege was preinstalled with clean Vista OS (factory settings started for the first time)
- I have installed latest Dynadock Utilitiy for Vista 2.3c
- Installing this software you must pay attention about installations steps and the installations procedure should not be interrupted
at one step there is window Installation Complete but it is not complete and must be continued with
Display Link Core Software installation
Video Dock installation
at this point the Dynadock must be connected to favorite USB port NOT FROM THE BEGINNING
- At the end I have restarted notebook
The installation was finished properly and I have connected 20 Toshiba Tekbright LCD display (DVI cable). The native resolution is 1680x1050. in Display properties there are shown three displays. Display number 3 belongs to display connected to the Dynadock.
Resolution 1680x1050 was there and display shows perfect picture. I have tested it as extended desktop and it works without problems. I didnt test it playing some movies.
I have also tested it with FN+F5 key combination. It does not work as it should be but there is definitely no error message. I know that FN+F5 key combination is not designed for external graphic card and I know that it can not work well.
At the end I can sat that Dynadock works well with Portege M500 SSD and there is definitely no error message. It works with Vista very well. I have tested it with screen saver and with few restarts. Nothing changes. Everything was OK.
So after this test I can say that you have done some mistake. If you want to use it again I recommend you to install Vista again using recovery image. After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS. Install software but please follow the menu on the screen and be sure all three components are installed properly. If I am remembering well when you see message about USB audio device installation you must connect Dynadock and continue installation.
PLEASE FOE DYNADOCK USE ALWAYS THE SAME USB PORT!!!
Sorry for this long story but I can say for sure IT WORKS PROPERLY!!!
