Does the power-on password fully protect user data?

Hi,
I am a T61 user.
First question
Does the power-on password fully protect user data, or could someone just boot from the optical drive or another source?
Second question
If I were to use full disc encryption, could I easily unecrypt it in the future?
Thanks in advance!

As mostly with everything in life, there are pros and cons related to all sort of data protection schemes. At least in therory, everything that can be encripted may also be decripted in some way, be it via reverse engineering or some other technique. - But of course some sort of protection is always better than no protection at all, especially if you deal with lets say sensible data.
The power-on password is not a full data protection at all, to get an idea of the different password protection schemes  take a look at the following short descriptions here...
--> http://www.tech-faq.com/ibm-thinkpad-bios-password.shtml
...there are some ways to reset a power-on password and informations how to do so can be found on the net. Further it doesn't help much if somebody takes out the whole harddrive of your Thinkpad.
Performing a full HDD encription, via an embedded ATM hardware chip inside the Thinkpad, or even using some OS related encription mechanism would be more secure for sensible data, as long as you don't get hardware or software trouble with those parts, which are responsible for the build-in encription/decription scheme. So it's always also a good idea to also perform additional periodically backups of your sensible data, so if some worst case scenario might appear, that you are still be able to restore your valuable data.
Hope this gives you at least a little idea about the pros and cons of both of these security schemes.

  • Does the power cord offer surge protection?

I have a MacBook Pro and was wondering if the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter protects against power surges without being plugged into an additional surge protector?

    Nope.

Restore the device to factory settings with iTunes.
Then launch the App Store app on the iPad and sign in with your Apple iD and password:

  • Type the name and password of a user in the "(null)" group to allow this.

To connect to wifi while in the recovery partition, I'm asked to authenticate the wlan's certificate, and in order to do that I'm asked for "the name and password of a user in the "(null)" group" to make changes to the Certificate Trust Settings. Anyone know what or which user may this be?
I'm not able to pass from the initial apple screen when I boot, so I wanted to repair or reinstall Lion, but in order to do that I need to connet to the WLAN to download it.

Hi, I called Apple Support this day, and the answer is that enterprise WPA wireless is NOT supported by Lion Internet Recovery.
You can find the supported configurations and protocols on Apple site:

  • What specific type of RAM does the Power Mac 8600/200 take?

What specific type of RAM (Memory) does the Power Macintosh 8600/200 take? If known, where could I get a hard drive for that Power Mac? eBay???? Any help would be gladly appreciated!!
    Thanks,

    Sean,
Craig refered to MacGurus. Here is their website:
    http://www.macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppc8600.php
You will find valuable information there.
Just a word of caution. If you have G3 memory chips and chips for the 8600/9600 etc. side by side, they will look almost identical but the registration notch is 1/16 of an inch off. Do not force one into the other machine. The real easy way to distinquish the 8600 memory chip is the two odd silicon chips in the middle that are not the same as the other standard RAM chips lined up on either side. They are parity checking chips, if my memory serves me correctly. The G3 memory modules will have identical chips all the way accross.
Be sure and follow the other links like:
    http://www.macgurus.com/products/ram/edodimm.php
for a complete run down on EDO chips.
    Ji˜m
This page shows the G3, PC 100 compliant RAM chip:
    http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/showpubnews.asp?title=Isyour+Memory+Module+PC-100+Compliant%3F&num=28
The chips for the 8600 will have more space in the middle and will have two non-conforming or mismatched chips in the center.

  • Does Azure Python API create_virtual_machine_deployment allow passing user data/script to a Linux VM?

Does Azure Python API create_virtual_machine_deployment allow passing user data/script to a Linux VM?
AWS EC2 python API allows me to pass user proprietary data or script when I try to create a EC2 linux based VM, e.g.
       ec2_conn.run_instances(image_id, key_name=vpc_name, instance_type=vpc_size, subnet_id=subnet_id, security_group_ids=[sec_group.id], private_ip_address=from_private_ip, disable_api_termination=True, user_data=my_user_data)
For Azure python API create_virtual_machine_deployment, does it have the similar thing?
I noticed that there is --custom-data in the CLI, but is there such an option using Python API?
If yes, could someone provide an example code?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi,
In Azure, this feature is called
custom data. Currently, you can inject custom data into an Azure VM by using the
    Windows Azure command-line tools (--custom-data).
I assume that it is not supported in Python API. You can use “custom_data=xxx”
within “create_virtual_machine_deployment” to check if it works.
If it is not yet available, please submit your requirement in Azure feedback below:

  • Does the power cord have a surge protector built in?

Does the "brick" at the end of the power cord have a surge protector built in? I'm wondering whether it's ok to keep my Macbook plugged in and charging during a thunderstorm or not.

    markrox7 wrote:
So I shouldn't leave my Macbook to charge during a thunderstorm if I don't have a surge strip/adapter?
    That is correct.
Get a surge protector for everyday use.
Unplug the charger during thunderstorms.  Surge protectors do not protect against the damage that a lightning strike causes - they just protect against electrical surges.

  • Why does the power button intermittently fault -- Not work to wake up the phone?

Iphone 4 occassionally won't respond to the power/sleep button.  Isn't stuck -- works normally much of the time, but occassionally acts as though the battery is dead.  Have to plug into a power source to activate phone.  Battery will show same charge it had before it went into sleep mode.  Can be near fully charged and proceed working for the rest of the day just fine.
Button does not stick or seem faulty in any way.  But, when you least need it to not work - such as in travel - or for emergences and have not power source to get to -- is bad.  An unreliable phone for a doctor is not good.  I have presented the problem to a few repair shops who are either not familiar with this behavior or suggest that is may be software rather than hardware.  Something miss reading the battery to the phone indicating that the battery is dead when in fact it is not.  Had the phone restored at the Apple store and this did not solve the problem.
It seems I did run across a blog that this occurred with some IOS update?
    Would be grateful for advice.
    Thanks

    Hi
I found this tip on the net.
Plug phone cable in (powered), press and hold button until voice control is activated, release, unplug.

I have not tryed it my self but it may work..
There are a simular trick to get the home button to work, here it is.
Open a default iOS application, such as Stocks, Calculator, or Weather
Press and hold down the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” dialog appears, then release
Now press and hold the Home button until the “Slide to Power Off” screen disappears, quitting the application.

  • Can I use my mac book pro with 120 volt and 240 volt power supplies?  Does the power converter automatically switch, so I just need a different adapter plug?

I got my mac book pro in the U.S., but I will be travelling to where there is 240 volt power.  Does the mag safe power adapter switch automatically, so I just need a converter plug, or do I need a transformer to convert from 240 to 120 volts?  Thanks.

    Hi,
I too bought my Macbook Pro in the US and I live in the UK (its so much cheaper in the US! No 20% VAT!)
The power adapter does work on UK 230v power. You can also get a three pin extension lead (like the 2 pin US one that came with the MBP) for about £3 with free delivery from Amazon UK.
Another tip, whne you are back in the UK, and you are switching from a PC to a Mac, get in touch with your local Apple Shop who run one to one free courses on how to use your MBP.
    Hope This Helps!!

  • How to know the system generated password when reseting users password?

    Dear All,
I have reset password using "genarated new password" in the portal from User admin, but dont want to send a e-mail notification  to end users, instead of that i want to know the system generated password.
But system doses't shows it.How can I tell what the password is and give it to the user?
I have a All super admin rols.
    Pleas guide.
    Thanks in advance.

Basically you can't! If you tell it to generate one, then that's only sent to the user. Why not enter your own random password or let the user pick their own through some sort of self service function?

  • How does the power of the iPhone compare to the PSP?

In terms of possible graphics and processing power. I have no idea of the specs of the iPhone but was curious if we would see games with graphics up to par with the PSP. Thanks

One of the more interesting aspects of third party programming that the SDK docs revealed is:
When a phone call comes in (or you go check your mail or anything else), third party apps are expected to save their state and exit.
    No background multitasking is allowed.
If/when you go back to whatever you were doing, the app is restarted from scratch, and it's up to the developer whether they want to start anew or to support a restart with saved data.

  • Does the NI-DAQ DLL support multi user usage?

I am currently developping several applications that will acces the card at the same time. Is it possible and does the DLL s have support for multi users.

The answer is yes and no. If the different programs are accessing different functionality (ie, AI, AO, CTR), then yes. If they are both trying to access AI lines for example, even if they are different AI lines, then no. If you have a specific setup you are curious about, post here again.
