Does the PowerBook run better on Tiger or Leopard?

I have been running my PowerBook on Leopard. I've been noticing it getting slower doing Internet, iWeb, iWork and other programs. I'm wondering if I should switch it to Tiger. Or is there a double boot I can run so I can run both Tiger and Leopard?
Thanks

Hi,
Depends.. I have the last model PowerBook G4 1.67 W/ the hi-res display. It has DDR2 memory and one modification I just completed was added a PATA Legacy SSD drive and this thing flies!! Bear this in mind that the only reason I have a PowerBook G4 is because I have no use for an intel laptop, as I have a 2010 mac pro 6-core and a Gateway P-6860fx + a G4 Pismo(well, upgraded G3).
I was just in the Apple store tonight and took a look at the new macbook pros. My only hope is that Thunderbolt will be a PCIe drop in for current and past mac pros(2010.2009.2008).
I am typing this on a G4 PowerBook as we speak
If you have 150.00, get a 120GB or smaller SSD - You will be glad you did,. Leopard runs very well on this laptop. Again, I can't speak for your laptop, but for the last models of the G4 powerbooks - mine runs Leopard very nicely!
And yes, through HTML5 and quicktime codecs, I can play HD 720 and barely 1080p on this and thats without flash! HTML5 is breathing new life into the PowerPC.
I love both platforms.. I am not an intel fanboi.

  • Why does the mouse 'run' to the lower right side of desktop and freeze when a SmartBoard is plugged into the USB port.  Running 10.8.5.   Sometimes the pointer has a cloud under it but it always freezes.

I run SmartBoards connected to iMacs running 10.7 and 10.8 throughout my school.  On one of these computers the mouse has recently started freezing the minute a SmartBoard is plugged in to the USB port.  The mouse 'runs' to the bottom right side of the screen, a cloud often is under the pointer, and it is not longer interactive.  You can move the mouse upward a bit with the cloud following some of the time but it does not work.  Once the SmartBoard is unplugged the mouse works normally.  This particular computer worked fine with the SmartBoard until recenlty.  Any solutions or ideas?

  • Why does the ProTranscoderTool_sb run amok?

Every time I open iMovie, when iMovie loads, after a few seconds the fan comes on, and I know something is not right. With the Activity monitor I discovered that the ProTranscoderTool_sb uses up anywhere from 110 to 166 % (!!!) of the CPU capacity.
    My questions are:
    1. What does the ProTranscoderTool_sb do?
    2. Why is it in overdrive all the time?
    3. How can I stop it from doing this?

It is creating ProRes versions of your clips in the background.  If you have recently imported a lot of clips or updated a lot of projects from iMovie 9 there will be a large backlog of transcoding to do.  Best to let it run while you are away from your computer for a few hours.

  • Does the ipad run faster/slower with verizon 4g or 4g wifi without the verizon 4g option

I'm looking at purchasing my first iPad and I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra money to get the wifi and wireless or would it be just as fast to get the wifi version and use my 4g mifi card from Verizon?

What will you use the 4g for? Do you travel often for work, go to very remote places? Why do you have mifi? Do you use your mifi with your phone on a regular basis? Can you use it for your phone and ipad? And don't you pay for mifi on a monthly basis even if you rarely use it? With 4g, you pay on a monthly basis so you might only need to do that a few times a year during the months you use it. I would call Verizon and find out. And I'm sure you're aware that they're always trying to sell you on spending more money so be careful how you word your questions.
I quickly googled the mifi question and saw this article. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/why-i-ordered-a-wi-fi-only-ipad/12470. Please read the comments to the article, too. Some agreed with the writer, while others had very different opinions. If you google your question, you'll get many opinions from professional tech people, users, and former users of 3g and 4g. This might help you make a decision.
We got our first ipad, (64gb ipad 2 wi-fi only) for my husband in June and one of my sons got the same today. Both are refurbs from the Apple online store. They come with brand new outer shell, brand new battery, and full one year warranty (other places that sell refurbs probably do not refresh their refurbs as Apple does, so if you go refurb, use the Apple online store. They're great! We saved a lot of money, even with the 64gb. (I know people love their new ipads, but this way we didn't have to deal with the possible overheating, yellow hue on screens, etc. We did not get 3g because if we are somewhere and need 3g, we all have phones that we can use. And though we won't get Siri on ipad 2 when it comes out, we don't care about it - just enjoying the freedom of 64gb, etc.
So, I suggest you evaluate your needs, check with Verizon, and google your questions. I'm sure you'll make the decision that is best for you!
At any rate, enjoy your first ipad! We think you'll love it!

Forgot to tell you -- to answer your question - I have no idea if the ipad runs faster or slower with or without 4g! (Verizon would probably tell you faster because they'll make more money, so I suggest you also google that.)
    Hope this helps!

  • Can my powerbook run os x 10.5 leopard

I have a 12" powerbook g4 867MHz 640 Mb ram and a 40GB hard drive and it is running tiger 10.4.11 flawlessly. Can it run Mac os x leopard 10.5.6?

This may be a case of whether you "can" or whether you "should." 867 mHz is the minimum processor speed for OS 10.5 Leopard. With modern RAM modules, you can increase RAM to 1.15G but the problem may lie in your video hardware, which is not upgradeable.
I have a G4 tower with a 1.25Ghz processor and 1.75G of RAM. Its video card is, although much more powerful than what's in your PowerBook model, does not support one of Apple's newer video technology that Leopard likes. The computer is not as snappy under Leopard as it is under Tiger (I have both OS versions still installed so it;s pretty easy to compare).
So it may be better to post why you need to upgrade. Some considerations:
If the upgrade is to get better web video performance, forget it. Most web video is no longer optimized for the G4 processor. Can't fix with RAM, a new OS or anything else.
If you have an iDevice and need to use the PB with it, you have no choice. You have to upgrade to 10.5 and simply suffer the sluggish performance. You may be out of luck here if the iDevice requires a USB 2.0 connection--the PB12 has USB 1.1 and no expansion slots to allow the use of a secondary USB 2.0 adapter.
If you need a newer browser version, post why and we may be able to find some workabouts that let you stay at 10.4.

  • Does the Apple Hardware test come with Snow Leopard?

Does the Apple Hardware test come with my iMac 27" i7?
If so, how is this activated and is it used as a periodic test or only when a problem develops?
    Thanks

The Hardware Test will be on the Install DVD(s) that comes with your iMac. With the correct DVD inserted, (re)start the iMac while pressing & holding the "D" key to start into the HT. Run it anytime you want to check the hardware.

  • Does the new version of Mail.app for Leopard have this DELAY feature?

Can you delay sending an email until XXXX date and XXXX time, like you can in Eudora?
I know mail.app currently has some scripts that allow for this functionality, but I'd really like to see it built right into mail.app. Can the new version of mail.app for Leopard do this?
    Thanks.

    Not to my knowledge.

  • Does the Powerbook really work with Leapard? Ever since I installed...

my fan is running NON STOP. And the computer is hot. I looked at the activity monitor and nothing seems out of whack (I am using firefox and word). I just ran into a friend who described the same problem after she upgraded. Should I be re-installing Tiger?
    Thanks!

Leopard is more demanding of hardware resources than any earlier OS version. You should expect your machine to run hotter and/or the fan to run more and faster. If you can't stand the fan noise and the heat, you may indeed want to go back to Tiger. It's a better match for your machine than Leopard is, certainly.
Note, however, that if you have just installed Leopard, Spotlight may still be indexing your hard drive: a highly CPU- and disk-intensive process that generates a lot of heat. If that's going on now, wait until it finishes to get a better indication of what temps and fan operation will be like in normal usage.

  • MD01 - in what order does the MRP run pick its materials to plan

    Hello,
I would like to know how the MRP global run (MD01or inthe background)  picks  the sequence of its materials?
Is it by order of material number? first number first run? or is there anyother logic?
    Thanks for any reply
    Aart

    Dear Aart,
As well said by Dogboy49,the system plans the materials according to the low level code sequence.
Materials may appear in several products and in several production levels of a product. The low-level code represents the
lowest level of usage of a material within all product structures.
It determines the sequence in which the materials are planned. The system plans materials with the low-level code 0 first and
then those with 1 and so on. The lower the low-level code is, the higher the number assigned to the level.

  • Does the fan run in sleep mode

hi guys do you know if the fan still runs in sleep mode?

If the power light is steady, rather than slowly pulsing, only your display is asleep. If you put your Mac to sleep (slowly pulsing power light) and the fans continued to run, the display and hard drive went to sleep when your Mac entered the "doze" mode of sleep, but the power supply and fans were still on and the processor was either running or idling. Once "full" sleep occurs, the main power supply is shut down, but there is a trickle supply that gives the computer the ability to restart without rebooting.
