Does the RE1000 create a second wifi network w seperate SSID?

I just bought the Netgear and I don't like it because it creates a second wifi network with a second SSID. I just want to be on the same network and not have to associate all my devices with a second network.
Does the RE1000 create a second SSID network?

By default each wireless device has their own network name. You need to make sure that the RE1000 will have the same wireless settings as your Netgear router that way you will be able to extend the range of your network.

  • Create second wifi network with WRT54GL?

I have DSL with a Comtrend router/wifi (WIFI1).  I would like to connect the WRT54GL to the physical network and have it create a separate wifi network (WIFI2), so my laptop will connect to WIFI2, get passed to the LAN and on to the Internet.
Cant make this work - tried setting up the WRT for DHCP server, DHCP passthrough (to the comtrend), and the best I can do is get connected to WIFI2 and have access to the LAN but not the Internet.
Ultimately I want to put a high gain antenna on the WRT to make it reach another building about 400' away and do away with comtrends horrible WIFI, but I cant get to first base.  Can anyone help?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can set it up this way: comtrend as main router with Wifi1 and DHCP enabled then connect the Linksys wireless router with its DHCP disabled and with Wifi2. Example, if IP Address of the first router is 192.168.1.1, set the Linksys IP Address to 192.168.1.2 and both will be connected via LAN-LAN or Ethernet to Ethernet. Check this link and read the LAN-LAN setup http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...
. I suggest also that before you disable the DHCP server on the Linksys router you set up first its wireless settings.

  • I want to enter the password for a secure WIFI network on several iphones.  If I do this, can the end users somehow extract the ip address and password for the wifi network from the iphone and use it from a pc (at home, for example)?

I want to enter the password for a secured wifi network on several iphones.  If I do this, is it possible for the end users to somehow extract the ip address and password information and use it from a pc/laptop/other mobile device.  For security reasons, I don't want them to be able to to this.
    Please advise,
    Thanks.

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol.  If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it.  Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.

  • Is it possible to create a second Guest network on a Time Capsule?

I have found a few similar posts but they are pretty old and not exactly what i want. In the Time Capsule there is an option for a Guest network. Would it be possible to create a second guest network with the same time capsule? So that it would have internet but would be isolated from the other components on the system?

Not exactly.....as things get tricky.  You could add another Apple router...but it would need to be configured in Bridge Mode to work correctly with the "main" router.
A separate Guest Network feature cannot be enabled when the Apple router is set up to operate in Bridge Mode.
This would apply to the "main" Time Capsule as well. So, you would need to insure that the Time Capsule was connected to a simple modem......not a modem/router combination device that is commonly offered by most Internet Service Providers.
Check with your ISP to make sure that they provide you with a simple modem if you want to be able to use the Guest Network feature on any of the Apple routers.

  • Does the pro works in a windows network environment

I would like to purchase a macbook pro (15") but I'm not sure if it will work in a windows network environment.
please help!! does the pro works in a windows network environment
    My situation:
    I work in a company 2500 employees, 3 locations, 7 sub-locations 1 sever. almost 80% of the locations is/will be wireless connected.
need a reliable fast and tough laptop to support users on all locations.

It would be neat though, to be able to connect
wirelessly on my Dell WinXP laptop over this dial-up
connection at home, the few times I'm going to use
it. So I thought eBaying one of those nice "old"
hockey puck Airport Extremes with built-in 56k
    modem.
    That should work.
From what I understood, the AE doesn't have a
    web-based configuration interface, like most
broadband routers have, but one needs to configure it
    installing a software utility, right?
    Correct
    Being in a
Windows only environment, will I be able to configure
my Airport Extreme-to-be using the Windows software
    on
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75422>
    Yes.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42forwindows.html
? Does anyone of you have any experience with this?
    Yes
If so, could you reassure me that this is actually a
    feasible idea?
    Yes if does work.
Does the AE dial-in automatically whenever you're
generating traffic, by the way, or do you still have
    to establish the connection manually?
You can configure it that way, but it is easier to use Jon Sevy's Java utility.
Jon Sevy has a Java Utility for this purpose.
You will need Java in order to run the utility

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
    Edit the Wireless Network Name
Keep it short.....maximum 10-12 characters or so. No blank spaces or punctuation marks in the name
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save the new setting and wait a full minute for the AirPort to restart

  • Why does the Date Created metadata change when images are exported? How do I stop it from changing?

why does the Date Created metadata change when images are exported?  How do I stop it from changing? I must have a prefernce set up wrong.

I don't know what OS you are using, or what application you are using to view the data about your exported files, but on Windows and using Windows Explorer the "Date Created" field relates only to the date that the exported file was created, i.e. if viewed immediately after export it will show the date created as being the same date. In order to view "Capture Date" in something like Explorer, you first have to ensure you have included the Metadata as Conrad outlined above, then you have to adjust the display properties of Explorer to show the "Date Taken" field. Here is an example, part of a folder I exported back on March 3rd, note the difference between that last two dates:

  • HT4145 Does the new Airport Extreme allow "guest network" setup across all my Airports on my network? I have 1 Airport as a router and 6 others as WAP's (bridged)

Does the new Airport Extreme allow "guest network" setup across all my Airports on my network? I have 1 Airport as a router and 6 others as WAP's (bridged)

I assume that all of your WAPs are hard wired on the network.
If.....all of your WAPs are simultaneous dual band Apple AirPort devices like an AirPort Extreme or new AirPort Express.....and.....you have firmware version 7.6.3 (now 7.6.4) installed on all the AirPorts.....and.....you use AirPort Utility 6.3.1 to configure the devices......in theory.....it should work.
I don't have 6 WAPs, but I do have 3 and the network works perfectly allowing extension of both the "main" and "guest" network.

  • My iphone wifi data from the consolidated file shows more wifi networks than I have been exposed to. Does the iphone also collect location on wifi networks that are within reach of the wifi networks it has access to?

I took out the wifi location data from the consolidated file and plotted into google maps. Clearly, not all those wifi networks are in areas or really close to areas I've been to, yet somewhat close. Does it mean that if I am within a range of a wifi network my iphone will not only collect location data of that particular wifi network but also all others that are within reach of that wifi network and so forth?

  • If I connect a time capsule via ethernet to an existing internet connection and use it to create a private wifi network for my wireless devices, will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?

Like it says in the title basically.
I want to use a time capsule to store my files and backups and access it from my phone and MacBook Air. However I do not want the others in my house who are currently connected to the same wifi/ethernet router to use my connection or my TC hard drives.
I had also been thinking about wirelessly extending the wifi network (a linksys N router) but I guess that will allow everyone to access my Time Capsule?
I hope you guys can help me.
    Regards, Guido

......will other users on the primary network (not the private wifi one) be able to access my files on my TCapsule?
No, if you have not provided them with the Time Capsule device password.
Users will be able to "see" the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading in the Finder on their Macs, but they will not be able to access the drive or the files.

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • Can I create a second wireless network using an Airport Extreme?

Does anybody know if the following is possible?
Cable Modem wired to Airport Extreme 5th gen ->   Wireless Internet via Guest Account ->   Airport Extreme 5th gen->
Create Secondary Private Network ->   Internet distributed Wirelessly to clients on Secondary Network  (Mac Mini, ATV 2)
    Thanks for any thoughts!

Would it be possible instead to link a second Airport Extreme wirelessly to a secure network on the first,
Yes, if you link to the "main" wireless network on the first AirPort Extreme.
then create a secondary private network,
No, but you could "extend" the "main" wireless network to provide more coverage and also enable the Ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
If you connected yet another router to one of the Ethernet ports, you could configure it to create another wireless network with its own password.
But cients on the "main" network would be able to "see" devices on the other "private" network and vice versa.

  • Creating a local wifi network between macbook and iphone

    Hi there
I'm in a hotel and want to move some files to my iphone, but the computer I have isn't my synching machine. I would like to create a wifi network that the iphone and the macbook can both join. I also have an older airport express on hand, and am using Snow Leopard on a newer macbook pro.
I've tried creating a wifi network on the macbook and joining from the iphone, but the iphone can't see the network even when specified manually.
I've also tried making a network with the airport express, but the same thing happens as with the macbook.
I feel like this should be do-able, but I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have been trying this for days now without success! I seem to create a computer to computer network ok (although I dont know if I should use dhcp or dhcp with manual or manual ip setting..??), and my iphone recognises the wifi name I give it.... but shows a different ip address!
and when I try the desired app (iosc), it doesnt seem to be transmitting any iosc data to my max/msp patch. Is there a simple test to check if the iphone is actually connecting ? - even though the ip addresses are different (weird!?)..
    any help very much appreciated...

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off, slow or hanging loads, etc.
I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!
