You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

  • I have a 2006 iMac.  I am trying to hook up a LG external DVD writer.  It doesn't appear on the desktop when I hook it up.  Any suggestions?

I have replaced the internal DVD/CD drive twice in the last 1 1/2 years.  Now when I insert a DVD or CD, it does not appear on the desk top or anywhere else.  I can't eject it.  I tried everything possible that I could think of.  After a few weeks, the CD decided to eject when I started up my computer.  I put another DVD in and this time it showed up on the desk top, so I tried to burn something to it and the computer told me there wasn't any device available to do such.  Then I could not get it to eject.  I tried shutting down the computer and starting it up, and the DVD disappeared off the desk top again.  This time I was able to get it to eject sooner.  I haven't put anything new in there since!  I purchased a third party external DVD writer.  When I hooked it up to the computer, nothing appeared on the desk top.  I put the software disc in (which is windows, but I wanted to see what it did).  It showed up on the desk top and let me open it up.  I was able to eject it from the desk top.  I then put in a blank CD to record music to.  Since there wasn't anything on my computer for the new drive, I tried dragging and dropping the songs onto the CD and it appeared to be burning the CD, but when I put the CD into my stereo, it showed error.  Many years ago I had a LaCie external drive because my computer didn't have one and it used Toast which was on my desk top.  I thought this one was supposed to just work with iTunes, but I am not sure what I am supposed to do with it.  Should the device appear on my desk top when I plug it in?  Is there some kind of software that I am supposed to have?  I am running version 10.6.8.  Thanks!

The external DVD/CD Writer will Not appear on your desktop when you attach it to your iMac.  It will appear in "Finder", which is in your Dock.
    Hope this helps

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

  • Do third party external optical drives work with retina powerbook?

do third party external optical drives work (read and write) with the retina powerbook?

Sure - any number of them. For best results, however, I'd shop OWC or MacMall to ensure Mac compatibility.

  • URGeN-External DVD writer compatability

I'm looking into buying an external DVD writer for my iBook G4 and I've found it hard to find one that says that it's MAC compatible. I've only found one and it was well out of my price range. However, I see tons of other USB 2.0 and Firewire writers out there that are within my price range. They speak of only windows and usually come with Nero software.
Does anyone know if those are capable of working with my MAC's OSX?
I just figure this is worth asking since most of the time the OS can pick up peripherals through the firewire and usb ports.

Look, at Lacie, Maxtor, IOmega, all 3 of these offer top of the line CD/DVD External Firewire Burners.
If by chance you find one that offers Toast 7 or Popcorn these will be for Mac OSX. Nero Software is PC Based. Don

  • What external DVD writer would work with Toshiba LX830?

Trying to connect an external DVD writer to Toshiba LX830 via USB.
Nothing will work - tried 3 writers and different software.
Does it matter that all the writers are USB 2.0 and the 830 is USB 3.0?
The best I've got is to 3%, then it just sits there.
Can anyone recommend an external writer that WILL work with the 830?

    Hi
Did you try to connect this external CD/DVD drive to all available USB ports?
As far as I know the Toshiba LX830 All in one computer supports 6 USB ports and two of these USB ports support ultra-fast USB 3.0 standard.
So even if the external USB ODD (optical disk drive) would not support USB 3.0, it should work in connection with the other 4 USB 2.0 ports

  • How do i connect an external DVD writer to my macair book ?

The wonderful present i received recently, namely my new Mac Air book has one major downfall, I love using I Movie to make movies, but how do i burn a DVD, i have purchased an external DVD writer, but I am pulling my hair out trying to get it to work, any ideas ???

Before buying any external DVD player/writer, you should make sure it is compatible with a Mac. If it is, it should be plug and go. If you are not willing to research, (like me), then just buy the $79.00 external Superdrive that Apple sells.
The difference between the least expensive usable unit an the Apple Superdrive is like $30.00. Not a big difference, IMO.

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • Installing software from an external DVD writer?

I have a MacBook Pro Summer 2012 so I needed an external DVD writer (Samsung SE-208) to install reFXs plug-in Nexus 2. I have connected the writer and I can hear it's running and it shows up in Finder. The problem is that no DVD is showing up. The writer supposedly works out of the box on Mac. What can I do? Is it even possible to install software from a DVD writer?

Could be the DVD is for a Windows system and not Mac OS X. Try any music CD in the drive. I personally have never had any problem with any brand external DVD drive that connect by USB port on my Mac. I have even used a Desktop style/size DVD drive that is supposed to be installed inside a desktop case and as long as I supply the proper power to it and connect it to my Mac with a SATA/IDE to USB adapter the drive works just fine.

  • What are third party compatible DVD burners?

I can't seem to find a clear answer to this question: What is a "third party compatible" DVD burner that I can use with iMovie/iDVD?
I don't have an internal DVD burner, so I'm thinking of picking up an external one. Problem is, I don't know which ones will work. Is there a list somewhere?
Do I need a firewire burner or can I use USB 2.0?
    Thanks.

LaCie Firewire External DVD burners are good and they include Toast software.

  • LG external dvd writer stopped working

Hi, I have an LG GSA-E40N external dvd writer connected to my eMac via usb2.
It was working fine from new at the beginning of June until the other day when I upgraded from 10.4.3 to 10.4.10. Now, my eMac won't recognise the LG drive at all in either the powered usb2 hub it was connected to originally or when connected direct to the computer - shows nothing connected to that port when it's plugged into the computer.
I took it back to the shop where, unsurprisingly, it worked straight away with a Windows system so it's not a leads problem.
So the obvious answer seems to be the upgrade to 10.4.10 broke support for the writer somehow but the question is, is there a way to get my eMac to work with this LG writer again under 10.4.10?

    thewiccaman,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There have been a number of reports of people having problems with USB or Firewire access to external drives after updating to 10.4.10 (balanced against reports of previously unusable drives that now work, not that that's of any consolation to you). It appears that some of the 'minor' tweaks Apple included in 10.4.10 to more closely match the published USB and Firewire standards cause problems with manufacturer's devices that are themselves slightly off the standards.
Although external DVDs should be recognized in 10.4 without any additional software, you can try checking the LG website for any mention of firmware or driver updates for your particular model drive.
You may want to resort to dropping down to 10.4.9 (while waiting to see if Apple releases a 10.4.11). Kappy describes how to downgrade the OS in this post. Ypu'll want this link as well: OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC)

  • How can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

Hello everyone, how can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

    OK. Start with:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select one of the two partitions, preferably the first one, change the Format type: to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • How do I configure a Pioneer DVR-XD10 external dvd writer to my macbook pro laptop?

How do I configure a Pioneer DVR-XD10 external dvd writer to my macbook pro laptop?
I read online that you could use an external dvd writer on a macbook pro when the internal dvd writer died.
    Please help?
It shows power running through the external dvd writer when I plug in the two usb ends into the respective ports, but it doesn't recognize it when I try to write media to a DVD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

  • How to hide url of third party external/partner application

I have a third party external oracle application arcims by the esri corporation that I have on a test portal.
It has it's own password authentication. In order to have sso work i have to turn off its password request.
The problem is that the URL address shows in the portal. Anyone could simply type in the URL and access the application directly and bypass the portal login. Can One hide or wrap the URL in portal? If so HOW is that done?

Since you'va already made Java non-portable by using Runtime, you're probably bbest off using the OS's capabilities to find the program's path.
If the 3rd party program was always contained in Java's classpath list, you could use Class.getResource().
