Does this hanging quotation mark look dumb?

I designed a fundraising brochure for a client that includes a quote on the bottom of the front cover (attached). Text is flush right for the moment. I did it two ways: flush right as is (left sample) and flush right with the closing quotation mark hanging out a bit (right sample). Does it look okay or am I overthinking this? I wouldn't obsess so much if it wasn't the cover.

Never hurts to show that sort of client both options. I think the originals both look like "centered" alignment that is badly spaced, and you can use that as a jumping-off point to introduce the left-aligned option. With differnt line breaks I think right-aligned would be fine, but this particular quote would look odd, I think, if you tried to break it differently.

  • Quotation marks look like " " in one InDesign document

    At my job I am updating an old InDesign file in CS5 with new content. Whenever I press the " or ' I get >> or > (not exactly, but it's a symbol that looks very similar to  >> or >). I have never had this problem and can't understand why it is doing this. There is nothing else in the document that makes the wrong symbol when the key is pressed.
    I am using a Mac and none of that stereotypical IT advice helps (reset the computer, open and close the program, etc.)
    I also already went into preferences & selected typographer's quotes, then changed the quote settings in Preferences > Dictionary to be the correct typographer's quotes, but it makes no difference. I feel like this should have been the solution to the problem.
    Any ideas? I'm getting tired of making the proper quote mark in another document and copy-pasting it whenever I want to use one (the only thing that works).

    Never mind, I googled it based on M Blackburn's response and found the solution myself. I will now explain the solution in case anyone else who was wondering stumbles across this.
    The correct solution is:
    1. Select the text and go to the Character panel.
    2. In the Character panel at the bottom there is a drop down that is marked Language. If you have selected the text and the current selection of the dropdown is blank, it means there are multiple languages being used (in my case, somewhere in the document the original author of the document accidentally used French, I guess).
    3. Change the drop down to "English: USA".
    I had already changed the language and both the quote options in the Preferences > Dictionary section, and this didn't change anything. The French apparently overrides it.
    M Blackburn was right about it being French, but Bob Levine of course that's the solution... I wanted to know how to do it, and Jeffrey_Smith I said earlier that I already tried that. Please double-check your answers to make sure they are worthwhile!

  • What is the difference between https: and http: at the beginning of the web address? Does this effect security when looking onto bank accounts?

    New to foxfire, and not very computer savvy. When enter search for bank account noticed the the web address came up with a http: rather than an https: as it normally does when I search from safari on MAC, or even at my PC at work. Not sure what the difference is but if it is a security thing than foxfire is no good for my use.

    In Firefox 4 and later you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.<br />
    The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server.<br />
    So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL.<br />
    The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the [[Site Identity Button]] on the left end of the location bar.<br />

  • Quotation Marks and Validation

    I'm working with an XHTML transitional document.
    I read on another forum that it is not necessary to use &quot; for quotation marks in regular html, and that it will validate without them. So I pasted text from am MS Word document with several quotation marks in it in a web page and it validated fine.
    However, when I type in text with quotation marks in the design area of the Web page, Dreamweaver inserts the &quot; in the code, as if it is needed.
    What is strange is that in this same document, I typed in some quotation marks in the code, so Dreamweaver wouldn't automatically add the  &quot;. Then I ran the validation check, and this time I got warnings that I should be using the &quot; because the quotation marks are between tags--in this case just paragraph tags. And it only gave me the warning on the quotation marks I typed in in the code
    So what is the reason for this inconsistency?  And do I need to use the &quot;.
    I would appreciate any assistance with this.

    Typing quotation marks in the code is not the same as in the design.  In the code quotations are used in HTML and server-side languages such as PHP and ASP differently.  In these cases quotes are needed as quotes and not as an HTML &quot;.
    Examples:
    HTML - &quot;Hello World&quot;
    Prints to screen -> "Hello World"
    PHP - <?php echo "Hello World"; ?>
    Prints to screen -> Hello World
    HTML - <div style="border:1px solid #000">Hello World</div>
    Prints to screen -> Hello World [Box surrounds text with 1px solid black border]
    HTML - <div style=&quot;border:1px solid #000&quot;>Hello World</div>
    Prints to screen -> [I'm not exactly sure what this does but it's not right and could look different in every browser]
    Hopefully this makes some sense as to why DW does what it does.  If you still have questions feel free to post back.

    It means that the sender thinks the message is urgent.

    That's a country code. Are you sending it to someone outside of the US or who is using a foreign carrier? Their carrier is prefixing the phone number with the country code for your phone number.

  • Quotation marks appearing as left or right arrows, does anyone know what is causing this?

    Hi there we are using Indesign 2014, I am not sure if that has anything to do with this or not, but certain paragraphs in a document have a bug, where by when you type in a quotation mark (') a left or right arrow appears. We have found that if we clear the paragraph styling this disappears and the quotation marks work fine again. It is worth noting that these paragraphs did not have any paragraph styles applied to them, but they were pasted in from MS Word. Has anyone else experienced this issue and do you know where it comes from?

    Ok thanks for enlightening me. We checked all the language settings on our workstations and they seem to be all set up as English UK and smart quotes are set to be used. I am not sure how to check the language assigned to a paragraph, as I say, there is not paragraph style applied to this text… Can you please let me know how to check this?
    The more I think about it, the more I think it is some sort of styling that has come in from MS Word. I thought InDesign was pretty good at stripping out anything like this.

  • Why does Pages not support French quotation marks?

    Hello,
    I've got the following problem:
    I like using Pages to write my texts. But unfortunately *Pages doesn't support French quotation marks, e.g. « Example. »* what Microsoft Office supports since years. Pages does know the other quotation marks „Example.“.
    An other particularity of French quotation marks is, that there is a special space between the quotation marks and the word required; those are called "espaces insécables" (indivisible spaces?) which word inserts automatically.
    The same problem exists with other special marks (i.e. "?", "!", ";" and ":"), which require an "espace insécable".
    This is just a killer-problem, when writing a paper, which is important. So I can't really use Pages and do have to use Word...
    Can anyone help me?
    I hope this will be fixed in the next version of iWork!
    Thanks a lot.

    I found a reference to the non-breaking space being alt+(space). I think it should work, but I'm surprised that it does when documents are imported from Word.
    I've looked for that on the swiss-french keyboard layout. In fact, it is shift + alt + space. But, as I already remarqued, this doesn't really help, because Pages obviously doesn't know how to treat those spaces, that is to say that there won't be any difference if you do a non-breaking space or a normal space...
    Henrik Holmegaard wrote:
    There are two models for supporting this, either you do it in the application (Microsoft) or you do it in the font file (Apple). There are further implications depending on whether you change the content of the character stream or the content of the glyph stream.
    The principle of is to preserve plain text as plain as at all possible. The more one manipulates plain text, the less possible it becomes to search plain text since search systems have to include private synonyms that ignore this or presuppose that.
    Apple's original idea was to do as much as possible in 'glyph space' / 'data space' in order to leave 'character space' / 'code space' in the font file as plain as possible. Finite state machines in Apple TrueType 2 are able to do the type of thing you are asking for, but at this point there is no TrueType 2 font file with these features.
    You may be right, I don't really know it. There must be another solution.
    Nevertheless, this problem has to be fixed by our little friends in Cupertino... I would like Page to work how I expect it to do that...
    Well, thanks a lot for all.

  • I can't log in to my computer- when it turns on it has a white/gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark in it.  What does this mean and how can I get it to stop to log in?

    Hi
    I dropped my macbook yesterday and it turned itself off. When I tried to turn it back on all I got was a white/gray screen with a flash folder with a ? in the middle of it?  What does this mean and how do I get it to stop so I can log onto my laptop?

    Deev
    Normally the question mark on the gray screen means it can't find the operating system. Have you tried booting up from the installation DVD? Do that, and when you come to the screen where it wants to begin a system installation you'll notice in the menubar where it say's utilites. Click on that and choose disk utility. from there choose your disk and try to verify and repair the disk. If you can you may want to also try and new install of the system. I don't know how much critical data you have, but reinstalling is an option. did you purcahse you from an Apple store? If you did you may want them to look at it. Hope this helps.

  • SSMS 2012:XQuery-doing "Retriving Job Candidates with the query Method" in AdventuresWorks 2012. Unclosed quotation mark after string '//*:Name.First?

    Hi all,
    From Page 354 of the the Book "Pro T-SQL 2008 Programmer's Guide" written by Michael Coles (published by apress), I copied the following code (Listing 12-9 Retrieving Job Candidates with the query Method):

    I am not able to figure out why I got the error messages.  Please kindly help and advise me how to correct this set of sql codes.
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott Chang

    Hi Scott,
    I don't have that book at hand, but your problem is the "Unclosed quotationmark after the character string",as the error message shows. You have to enclose the 'XQUERY' string quotation in the
    query().
    SELECT jobcandidateid, Resume.query
    N'//*:resume,
    //*:Name.Middle,
    //*:Name.Last,
    //*:Edu.Level' --enclose the quotation here
    FROM HumanResources.JobCandidate;
    For XQUERY learning, here is a good
    link.
    If you have any question, feel free to let me know.

  • Getting Quotation Marks to look like they were mirrored. In GREP or Regular find and change

    Hello,
    Is there anyway to make quotation marks come out like this image below.
    Right now I have 2 text boxes to make it work, as I cannot get the first double quote to look like a mirrored version of the right double quote ;-(
    This is what it needs to look like.
    Thanks,

    Little bits do not count for as much as great big bits, and it is rule-worship to assume that they do. There is no proportionality in grouping very different sorts of violation together as if they were all in the same league of criminality. Picking up a dime someone has dropped in the street is completely different from breaking into someone's house and stealing a large quantity of money.
    You'd have a fit if you found out I was using a logo you designed, without permission, and was making money from publishing it. Suppose I hacked into your system and copied your last completed job and handed it to your client before you could deliver and bill them? Would you be upset if they went ahead and used your work and didn't bother to pay you because, after all, there was no 'property' involved and they have what they need without cost?
    Yes, I would regard that as a serious legal offense, and would follow it up with the full rigors of the law. But it is not "theft" in the proper sense of the word, in my opinion, because an idea (design, logo, etc.) is a type rather than a physical token. Its authorship must be protected, its origination acknowledged, monetarily rewarded, and all that, but the idea that it has an "owner" is the product of philosophical and logical confusion.
    Human tend to over-extend the concept of ownership to all sorts of things that cannot legitimately be owned, such as other people. Even nowadays, following the abolition of slavery, many people consider themselves the owners of their spouses, children, employees, pets, etc..

    PS: Forgot to add that I have paid for Sgt. Pepper four times already -- in mono vinyl, stereo vinyl, tape cassette, and CD. Don't you think it's time we all deserved an "upgrade"?

    I want to ask for more information. Do these files look ok in Firefox/Lotus/and another word processor? Where do you download them from and to?
    If you have a problem with display of fonts in Firefox, you can try to change font setting in Tools menu, Options window, Content panel, fonts section.

    it means your HD and the software can't find each other, the following article tells how to troubleshoot this issue:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
    hopefully you have backup of your data since sometimes this means the HD is crashing.
    if the article doesn't resolve the issue i would take the mac to apple store or service provider and have it looked at, the following link tells how to find one close to you:
