Does this seem legitimate?

I don't know if this is the proper forum for my subject. If it isn't, I'd appreciate knowing where I should post this question.
I have been subscribed to Boxee for probably six months, but I haven't used it because something was wrong with it. I still don't find it to be user friendly, but I'm now trying to learn.
Today I noticed that I had received eleven messages. They all use identical language to tell me that my computer might be hosting malware. Maybe they'e just being helpful, but maybe there's something more sinister behind these messages. Here's one of the messages. Does it seem believable?

Hi, Niku -
It's a scam.
Niku: Thanks for the quick reply, Don. Thanks also to Miriam and the intrepid b noir. I'll take your collective advice and resist the temptation to click on their suggested link. I'm also going to try to try to tell Boxee about it. I say try, because I'm still not too good at navigating around their site.
I'm also in the process of dealing with a message that allegedly came from UPS. The problem is that Earthlink said not to open it because it contained a virus. I would ordinarily have ignored such a message, but it is a fact that the package I mailed to myself in December never arrived, and the message UPS sent (I finally did open it) mentioned that it had been sent in December. Therefore, because of the December mailing and because of Mac's strength in dealing with viruses, I took a chance. That enable me to read the message, but I couldn't open the attachment that came with it. Now I waiting to see if UPS answers my message (No, I didn't supply any valuable personal information). If they don 't answer today, I'll call to see if such a person works at UPS.

  • Does This Seem Right?

I'm really dissapointed in my MBP's battery life. I had the PB G4 but due to those lines I returned it. The only problem is that my PB spoiled me for battery life.. I was able to get up to 5 hours.
I'm barely getting 3 on this thing and I have full calibrated it. I have absoluely nothing running except safari, screen is way below middle level lighting etc.
This is my info.....does it seem ok or should I be calling Apple? I've only had it for about 2 days but this is disapointing.
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5413
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1921
    Amperage (mA): -2170
    Voltage (mV): 11032
    Cycle Count: 3

Yes, it is interesting. I tested it again tonight and I still get just a bit more than 5 hours on a full battery. Maybe I am doing something different? When I conditioned the battery I charged it up fully and left it charging for 24 hours. Then, I simply unplugged the charger and ran it off the battery until it went to sleep. Then, I "rested" the battery/computer for 8 hours and charged it again for 24. That is when I ran my test. I got a bit over 5 hours - I think it was 5 hrs and 18 minutes. Tonight, from a full charge, I ran it down again and got just a bit more than 5 hrs. - something like 5hr10min.
Also, I am really not doing much wit the computer while I ran these two tests - I only updated my iPOD (downloaded the Daily Show) and am surfing the web right now. That is it. Most of the stuff I do never gets the drives moving much, so it is all display drivers and not much else except for the tiny trickle charge used to top off my 60 GIG iPOD. Also, maybe the battery will degrade and get worse....rapidly, but I doubt it. I've owned almost nothing but laptops for the past 15 years and this is the best I have seen for battery life.
I like my MBP better evey time I use it...and *detest* those awful cheapo "chicklet" function keys. How can Apple make such a GREAT computer - and I think this is THE BEST notebook ever made - and put those crappy cheap, non-aligned function keys on it? I hope someone from Apple reads these forums and listens. The MBP will down as one of the finest computers of all time if they fix a few minor flaws. And I've decided to do some software development on it and I don't waste my time anything that doesn't look like it's going to be worthwhile.

  • Available space on HD - Does this seem right?

I have the 100gb HD in my MBP. I setup Boot Camp to use 32gb since I have several programs I still need on the Win side until I can upgrade all or most to the Mac side. So of the 60+/- on the Mac side I only have 8gb free space. I have only installed Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1 besides the basics. I looked through the folders on the HD and the Library folder contains 36.42 GB of info. Is that right or is there a problem? I checked the size of all the other folders and they seem reasonable, just not this one. Do I have a problem?
    Thanks in advance.

They chaged my MBP with the new one, they insatlled the Ram module to new MBP after one hour new one gone mad to its just keeping restarting, after that black screen with blue and red stripes going up and down.I took it to Apple stor but i was so ****** of because the installation of the stuff taking an hour or something. In Apple store there is a lady georgeous lady offf
They changed it againg and They said we prefer not to install this ram module. That was my first relationship start with MBP. How nice start, but we learned how to communicate, right know I'm trying to not see the bad thing about it. I thing thats the best way.

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • I had upgraded to FF 4.0.1 a while ago. Last night I got a bubble telling me that FF 4.1.0 was available and I should download and install. This version does not seem to exist. What is this about?

I had installed FF 4.0.1 and have been using it for a while. I am running Win XP Pro, SP2. Last night a messge came up informing me that FF 4.1 was now available and that it would be advisable to download and install it. I did this and everything seemed to work fine but when I look at the 'About Firefox' info under 'Help' it still tells me that I am running 4.0.1. Everything still seems to be functioning well but this disturbs me as it does not seem to have been a FF message. Can you please tell me if such a message was sent out, and if so, why, seeing as the version does not seem to have changed?

To ensure that no malicious software has been installed, try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:

  • HT1923 I am using windows 7 and have upgraded itunes to 11. Now when I open my music library in itunes and click on a song it says "original file could not be found" Over 2000 songs come up this way and locate does not seem to work. Before the upgrade all

With Windows 7 I upgraded itunes to 11. Now in my itunes library, when I click on a song "original file could not be found" comes up. This happens with over 2000 songs, but it seems to be ones I recorded from cd's. Locate does not seem to work. Has anyone else had this problem?

Highlight a song that is supposedly missing, press CTRL+I to Get Info, say no when asked to locate the file, then look at the summary tab. Where does iTunes "think" the file should be? Where is it really? You may need to give a configuration file a minor tweak.

Paypal for Family Sharing - Why can't I use PayPal with Family Sharing? Have a US Visa card but a foreign address, and Apple does not seem to be able to cope with that (even though it is a multinational corporation). So I set up payment with Paypal, and it worked fine. Now I want to take advantage of Family Sharing, but Apple won't allow it. Could we lean on Apple to change this policy?

If you are not in the US then you cannot use the US store, the store's terms say that you have to be in a country to use it - if you are using the US store then you are risking having your account disabled.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
