Does time capsule accept network share?
I want to be able to use my 2TB Time capsule (4th gen) to store H.264 or MJPEG video that is generated by network camera's. Is that possible?
Search here on apple discussions is appalling.. really I have posted this daily for a year..
SMB is provided by the Apple TC.. but the apple names are not SMB compatible..
Open whatever version of the airport utility you have.. hopefully you have a PC .. load airport utility for windows.. or up to Lion you can load 5.6 utility.. I have no idea how to use version 6 utility because it is a toy and I refuse to upgrade to toy versions.
Click on manual setup.. in a real airport utility.
On the menu items go to airport as the top selection.. and wireless in the sub selection.
Now you change the name from that Apple horror story to something like above. Short .. no space.. no strange characters that windows cannot understand like apostrophe.. Set WPA2 Personal the above shot is wrong on that.. put in wireless password.. no spaces of course.. pure alphanumeric of course.. 8-12 characters.
On the main airport page also give the airport an SMB compatible name.. instead of apple timecapule 876657
TC for example would do very nicely.
Go to the disk file sharing page.. as above. turn on the guest to read and write.
Change the workgroup name to the actual WORKGROUP name .. by default although not always WORKGROUP.. sometimes Microsoft used MSHOME..
Don't worry about wins server.. they are dead long long ago.

JoelIt's generally not a good idea to back up a backup. Any problem on the original will be copied to (and perhaps magnified on) the copy.
It's usually much better to make a separate backup, with a different app. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some suggestions. -

As it happens, a connection to the Time Capsule is established usually, anyway. On occasion it doesn't.
I have a Volume, Data, on the capsule, which similarly, usually mounts, but occassionally doesn't, with access permissions denied.
Any suggestions on how begin to work out how to achieve networking seamlesness?First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back. -

I woudl suggest doing a Factory reset....

If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule. -
Using Time Capsule as Network Backup only no wireless
Hi all,
I already have a wireless network, but I have a couple of C level users who "forget" to store documents on the server and then proceed to throw them away, and I have a 1TB time capsule, that I was using for testing, but that project is now over and it is available. I was hoping to put the TC on the network, but not use wireless with it and simply share it as an additional backup device.
I believe that I need to turn off the Wireless, assign a IP address on my subnet, then everything should be fine? Right?

When I setup Time Capsule with a fixed LAN IP, switch off the wireless mode, Time Capsule accepts the settings but as soon as it is hooked up to the LAN and reboots, it kicks away its settings, gives an error message and switches back "on" its wireless mode.
Ok, I understand that it switches back its wireless mode, to be able to talk to the MAC, but... why is it not taking the fixed LAN IP? It is a regular 192.168.0.x address that is free on the network, I am not sure what to do...
Before that I tried to install it as a client on the existing wireless network, provided by a Zyxel Wireles/LAN Firewall/Switch, that worked for about 2 hours, since then Time Capsule has never again accepted to enter the wireless network.
I am stuck here... the Time Capsule is new, belongs to a friend of mine who has exactly the same 24'' I-MAC as I have (except for a different brand hard drive), he is not computer savy, so this is why I am trying to help him out here.
He needs the Time Capsule to be on the LAN only, as he also has a Vista Notebook and as he mainly runs his MAC in Vista, as he needs some software which does not exist for OS X.
Anyone, any idea, how to force Time Capsule into the LAN mode, without its wireless... or is there a way to clear all old configuration settings... because, every time I try to clear the old settings, the Time Capsule does its very best to recover these...

Otherwise, my guess is that this Time Capsule is faulty and that my friend needs to send it in for replacement. -

If your real question is to ask whether you can store other data on the Time Capsule drive....you can. -
My MBP doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep
My MBP (OS 10.5.8) doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep. Thus, every time my MBP wakes from sleep, I need to select the Airport icon in the upper menu bar, select "Join other network", enter SSID and password. This is very cumbersome. And, I never had this problem when I was using the ISP's provided wireless router/gateway/DSL modem. Adding the Time Capsule and using it to generate the wireless network has introduced this problem.
It appears that this problem has to do with the hidden SSID. I don't need the lecture on how hidden SSID provides no serious security benefit. That's why I have the WPA2 encryption. I'm interested in a solution that will allow the Time Capsule to generate the wireless network, maintain a hidden SSID, continue to use WPA2 encryption, but have my MBP recognzie and autoconnect to this network.
Solutions I've alread tried:
1. Open Network Preferences
2. Select Airport from left hand column (and ensure Airport is at top of that list)
3. Select Advanced
4. Delete all Preferred Networks.
5. Apply settings.
6. Restart computer
7. Return to Network Preferences and from Advanced page, manually add my network with hidden SSID and WPA2 password
This solution works fine as long as I don't take my computer elsewhere and connect to another network. As soon as my preferred networks list gets another network, my MBP stops finding my TC network. Since I take my laptop to a lot of places (it's a laptop, after all...) this is a problem.
As I say, prior to adding the TC on my network (and using it to generate the wireless network), my MBP had no problem keeping 50+ preferred network names/passwords in the Preferred Network list, but always automatically finding/connecting to my home network without the need to "Join other network." Thus, I assume the problem lies with the Time Capsule.
Any ideas?LaPastenague, thanks for weighing in. Didn't know that the hidden SSID capability was not IEEE standardized, and thus different devices will handle hidden SSID differently. With my admittedly limited knowledge of how SSID/hidden SSID works, I'm still a little confused as to why my MBP would remember the generic router/gateway's hidden network, but struggle with the TC's hidden network.
To my knowledge, when an SSID is broadcast by a base station (Airport, wireless gateway, etc.), a connecting device (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) detects this broadcast--this would be a passive reception of this SSID signal.
When an SSID is hidden, the base station does not broadcast its identification. Rather, a connecting device must transmit the name, and when the base station recognizes the broadcast, the connection is made. That's what you do when you select "Join another network" and manually enter the SSID.
The idea with OS X's Network Preferences is that these steps, whether for hidden networks or broadcast SSIDs, become automated.
Where is the potential for a different chipset between the TC and the previously used wireless router/gateway to alter this functionality? Shouldn't the selection of an SSID by the MBP to broadcast to seek for a base station be a function solely on the MBP? And once broadcast by the MBP, the TC should detect and reply?
Basically, the MBP can connect to the hidden TC manually just fine. The MBP can connect to the old setup automatically just fine. The MBP cannot connect to the TC automatically. Aren't these automatic connection functions solely on the MBP?
I'll try un-hiding the network and re-verifying that the problem is exclusively with the hidden network.

It's not clear just what you mean.
If you're backing-up your Mac, via the Time Machine software, to a Time Capsule or external HD, then yes, by default, Time Machine will copy everything the first time. Subsequent backups will copy only what's new or changed.
If you mean, can you back up other data on a Time Capsule, no, not with Time Machine. It can only back up TO a network location, not FROM one. -
IPhone will not find Time Capsule Wifi network?
recently updated my phone to the latest and greatest, but now it will not find my Time Capsule wifi network... even when standing right next to the capsule itself.
this does not seem to be a problem with an old base station... just the time capsule has disappeared off of the phone's network list. my macbook pro and apple tv continue to function normally... only the phone that is acting up.
anyone have any ideas?No immediate thoughts other than when I synced my iPhone with my Mac, which was set up to connect to the TC, the iPhone seems to be configured with all the right settings as if they had migrated across.

How does Time Capsule treat data other than disk images?

I have a 3TB TC to use primarily as a wireless backup, as intended by Apple.
However, I wish to temporarily transfer a couple of GBs of data to it for transferring across to another machine.
I seem able to do the above, but my question is: how does the TC treat the two different types of data?
- Is it a better idea to partition the drive first?
- Is the TC likely to automatically delete the original data, like it does with old disk images, when the disk gets full?
- Can the TC handle the disk images and the original data side-by-side?
Just need some help understanding the 'Apple Magic' with this one!
I do realise that having the original data on the TC won't help me if it fails, but like I said, this is a temporary measure. Please don't post about this, as you won't win yourself any points - you'll just look like a smart-*** and annoy everyone.

2. It isn't possible to partition the Time Capsule. Network drives can only be partitioned by software specifically designed to work with that drive.

Why does time capsule go missing from the network. The green light is lit at all times. I am unable to use the software the only thing I can do is power cycle time capsule, by unplugging and plugging the mains back in.
My time capsule is only a few weeks old, any ideas?

ThanksAn external drive is much more reliable.. the issue has to do with network connection and loss of something.. although I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly what. The computer is still connected, still works on internet but has actually lost the hard disk.. lost and cannot find it without a restart.
If you want to try a few changes it can help.
1. If you are connected by ethernet make sure wireless is off in the imac.. having only one network connection is better than two.
2. Redo the TC setup with all short names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple has these long names with spaces and characters like apostrophe by default but they are not a help.
3. If the TC is the main router then reduce the dhcp lease time.. make it 20min.. that keeps everything refreshed and up to date.
None of those fix it but they may help stretch out the interval. -
Is there a way to see and have control over who connects to your time capsule wifi network?
Ok, have this question. Have a time capsule wifi network. Have the latest mountain lion on my mac pro. I know if you go into airport utility, and you click on the picture of my timecapsule it shows what clients are connected to my time capsule aka using my internet etc.
What I want to know, is there somewhere I can go on the mac where I can view who is connected to my time capsule wifi in more detail, see amounts of data they are using, and maybe even boot them off, or ban there computer from the network for a while if need be? Trying to assess what family members are using up all our data, and want to ban the appropriate offenders
Even if Mac doesnt have anythink, if you know any third parties from the app store that have an app that is like a "tap" on the top of your Mac that shows networking details, that would be great too!

In fact you will find it hard to find a wireless router on the market that mets your specs.. but there is a great 3rd party firmware.. called gargoyle.. this can be loaded like an official firmware in a NETGEAR WNDR3800 which is a fairly cheap very good solid wireless router.. bridge your TC behind this router running gargoyle and you can set quota for all your family members (kids I imagine). Quota can be set for daily, weekly even hourly.. and you can apply throttles or qos.. none of these controls even exist in the TC. -

Solution for Windows 7 can not connect to Time Capsule Guest network
Problem: Sony Vaio running Windows 7 (64bit) will not connect to my Time Capsule Guest network
For added security, I set up a guest network at home. My friend brought over a Vaio and was unable to get an internet connection via my Guest network. The Vaio connected to the Time Capsule with no problem, with full bars, but was not able to get on the internet.
After way too many hours going through useless online suggestions and even calling Apple tech support to see if there might be a known compatibility issue (where I was told they had no idea and I should call Mr Softy) I discovered that the Vaio had somehow set itself to use the DNS Server address of the Time Capsule, main network, not the guest network. (ie Main network uses 10.1...., Guest uses 172.1....) so once I set the Vaio to Obtain DNS server address automatically it fixed the problem and connected to the internet via the Guest network.
Detailed solution:
Configure Time Capsule Guest as follows:
Network Name: fill in the blank
Allow Guest Network to communicate: left unchecked
Guest Network Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
Password: fill in the blank
Configure Vaio:
Set up new connection from the Network and Sharing center using the name given to Guest network
(for password chose WPA2-Personal>AES>then your Guest Password)
Select Manage wireless networks from left column in main Network and Sharing center window
Select Adapter Properties
Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it, and Select Properties
Make sure both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected then OK & go back to Network and Sharing center
Connection is active.
