Does Time Capsule back up everything on my computer? If I inadvertently delete photos from iPhoto can they be retrieved from Time Capsule?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

    Yes.
And will it restore if the hd isn't even there? Like what if it got stolen or destroyed.
    Also yes.
Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Thank you, I was able to figure it out.  I had to go to the advanced section and then go to the back up for the day before I reset the phone.

Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

can i transfer all my playlist from a time machine back up to a new computer?

    Hey joven_photo,
Thanks for the question. Your iTunes playlists are stored within the iTunes Library files. The best option may be to move your entire iTunes Library to a new computer, as outlined in this article:

You access them in the event they are in or under Photos or from an album if they are in an album - simply drag them to the book project in the source pane on the left

I have accidentally deleted my alternate iCloud (email) address. Are there any possibilities to retrieve it back because my iPad is connected to that email address, and now, I can't log out from it on my iPad, because it doesn't exist.
I have alternate icloud email attached to my iPad and I accidentally delete it from appleid.apple.com. And now I can't log out that iCloud account because it doesn't exist and it can't recognize my password.

If you mean that Find My Phone is asking for a password to a different Apple ID to your current Apple IDand that ID is a previous version of your current ID, not an entirely different one.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details and some other circumstances.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device. It may take a short while to remove the account.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

hello i accidentally synced all my photos from Iphoto and they doubled, i removed them all eventually to re-import them again, but i have no camera folder anymore and i have a folder called "From Mac" how can i turn it back to normal?

That is normal for photos synced from a computer to a phone using iTunes. Synced photos were never placed in the Camera Roll. Additionally since iOS 8 there is no Camera Roll: http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/09/19/goodbye-camera-roll-where-to-find-your -photos-in-ios-8

  • Time Machine backing up everything EXCEPT my Desktop

Well i used Time Machine to back up my LaCie 500GB Firewire HD. Never a hassle before, but i'm wondering if there is a glitch possibly with 10.5.7 that isn't allowing it to backup my Desktop.
I went into the Time Machine preferences, into the Options, and there is nothing listed in the "Do Not Backup" pane - except for the External drive itself. I did not physically tell it to exclude anything, and there is nothing else there.
So it appears that everything is being backed up normally, except when i enter Time Machine, there is no Desktop folder, just all the other folders/files, etc. Even going "Back In Time" i was unable to locate a backed up Desktop folder.
So i messed up anyways and did a clean install on my MacBook Pro (knowing that i could use Migration Assistant to get my machine back up and running again). And when i did this, it restored everything except what was on my Desktop.
So now i'm back up and running again with a perfectly normal computer (except what should be on my Desktop now), and i selected my Time Machine backup disk again, and made double sure there was nothing in the "Exclude" window pane - but there is still no desktop folder again after i did a complete backup all over again.
Does anybody have any ideas, or know if there is possibly a glitch with maybe 10.5.7 or something that is not allowing it to backup my Desktop? Thanks!
    Jason

That is truly odd. Not really sure why this would occur, but for a start do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Does this fix the problem after you force another TM backup?

  • Time Machine backs up everything every time

    Hi
I've just had my hard drive replaced (as part of the Apple recall) and I have just had my external 2TB LaCie hard drive replaced as well due to a fault. I plugged the external hard drive in for the first time yesterday - partitioned it into 3 (one specifically for backups) and did a full backup and now Time Machine backs everything up each hour and takes forever - it's only backing up 4.39GB (it's taken 15 minutes to backup up 754kb). Very frustrating. Any advice would be great.
    cheers

You can import directly to an external drive. Just select the external drive from the import from camera screen. The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). You can buy them this way, or you can buy a drive formatted for Windows and reformat it yourself. Let me know if you need instructions.
For existing Events and Projects, you can move them to the external drive following these instructions.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
For videos of my children and the family, my practice is to keep everything. I just buy extra external drives to keep it on. It is very important to keep backups of everything that is irreplacable. What I do is create an archive copy of my camcorder files. I back that up rather than backing up the whole event. I import to the iMovie Event from the Archive copy. Once I know the archive copy is good, I reformat the card in my camera and shoot some more.

  • Can you transfer files using Time Machine back-up to a new computer?

I have an early 2006 iMac and would like to get a new one. Would I be able to copy the files that I want moved to the new computer by using my Time Machine back-up? I would only want to transfer a handful of items including my iTunes and iPhoto libraries as well as my iWork files.

You most certainly can. What you want to do is to go to System Preferences>Time Machine>Advanced> and exclude everything except the files you want to bring over. Then, plug the Time Machine Backup into the new machine and use Setup Assistant; It'll walk you through the rest.

  • I deleted my contacts and can't restore them from time capsule

    Please Help!!
I deleted around 4000 contacts by mistake with a script deleting the annoying duplicates that come with cloud syncs.
I can't restore them from my time capsule, I have read other posts and they suggest to copy the contacts folder in a back up from my time machine, Time Machine volume -> Users ->Yued1 -> Library -> Application Support -> CONTACTS, coping the folder in to my desktop and deleting the one in my computer all with out internet connection so iCloud won't cause problems, export the contacts, connect to the internet and then once connected let iCloud do its thing and then import the exported contacts, it all sounds good but when I mount my time capsule volume I get the folder backups.backupdb>Yued's Macbook Pro>(The backup folder of the date I choose)>Macintosh HD>Users>yued1 but Inside yued1 there is no Library folder, I did the command in terminal to show all files and folders, terminal accepted it relaunched finder but still won't see library, the only folder in my time capsule with library, is inside Macintosh HD but doesn't have a contacts folder inside application support.
    I have OS 10.9.4 processor 2.2 GHz i7 and 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I don't know what time capsule I have except that is a 1TB from 2011
I really appreciate your time helping me out. thank you!

    Thanks for your help,
It takes forever to go from one window to another back in time, once I get to the one I want and click restore It goes back to my desktop as it would when restoring something else but the contacts stay the same...
I do see all the deleted contacts in the snapshots, but can't restore them

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

  • I need recommendations in purchasing an external hard drive, to back up everything in my computer. What brand and Size?

    I have a mid 2010 iMac, version 10.8.2, memory 4GB, 1TB sata disk.
Apple sent me an e-mail last year stating that my imac maybe affected to a recall. They said I have to back up my computer before sending it in to them. So its a great excuse to purchase an external hard drive.
But I am clueless. I would like to know what brand and size of memory is recommened for my imac and my needs. I will be mostly be backing up homevideos and alot of pictures, music, and some documents.
If someone could also explain about time machine? I guess its a whole separte thing from your media. I also would like to keep it affordable. I just purchased an external hard drive from www.macmall.com Seagate Backup Plus 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Drive - Black (STBU1000100).
But I don't know if that was a really great choice because for it to work with time machine I have to reformat certain things, and Im not sure if I would like to have that hassle.
I also wanted to know whats the difference between usb 3.0 and firewire. I read some forums saying that if you are to transfer videos you need to use firewire, and some agreed disagreed. Is that true?
    Please help!?
I definitely would like to know what brands of external hard drives are highly recommended and good at price. The one I purchased is it any good?
    Thank you!
