Does Time Capsule need to be plugged into anything other than power to work

Sorry if this is a real newbie question. I don't own a Time Capsule yet, but am thinking of buying one. What I am wondering is, can I just hide the Time Capsule somewhere in the house (away from burglars) and just have it plugged into a power outlet - i.e. no ethernet/DSL modem - and still have my Mac talk to it? (I already own an Airport Extreme and that's connected to my DSL modem.) I am not sure about this because the online manual talks about plugging it into a DSL modem as well.

One of the configuration options for the Time Capsule is to set it up to "join a wireless network". In this type of configuration, backups occur only over wireless.
As long as the Time Capsule is located where it can receive a good wireless signal, backups will occur correctly. A cabinet may not be a very good location for the Time Capsule for several reasons...one, the Time Capsule needs plenty of free airspace to run without overheating and two, the wireless signal may not be strong enough to be reliable in the cabinet location, especially if this happens to be a metal cabinet.
Backups will occur much faster if you can connect the Time Capsule to the AirPort Extreme using an ethernet cable. Or, if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable to the desired location of the Time Capsule, you might want to take a look a a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same goal by using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.

Hello - I'm looking to buy a time capsule. I don't want to use it as a router though. I want it hidden away (from potential burglary) so I can back up my imac and by laptop pc wirelessly. My question can I do this or do I need to have it plugged into my router? If so is it the best product to do this?

Not sure if that is possible as I don't see an option for Time Capsule to Join an existing network as a client. However, if your existing wireless router is also an Apple product, it may be possible via a WDS or extending the network. Maybe a network guru can chime in. The other option is for TC to create another network, but then your Macs would need to be manually switched from the existing wireless network to the TC network for Time Machine backups.

You have to do it on the Apple TV itself while it's plugged into a TV so that you can see its screen.

I just bought a time capsule to use with TM (annoyingly my aiport express is 802.11g so I cannot use the exclusive 802.11n connection, but i digress)... I first tried a back up using WiFi connection and this was going to take from 24-48hrs. My computer half way through was turned off and the backup cancelled thus I took the opportunity to connect via ethernet and this took about 12 hrs, faster but...
I have already used TM with an external hard drive connected via firewire 800 and this was seemless, quick and efficient and I have bough two new macs and have booted from TM using the firewire connection in about 1:30 hrs.
Should not the TC have a firewire connection to at least enable us to do the first back up and if we ever need to reload the old data to not wait overnight to get it done?
any thoughts on how initial back ups and reinstalls can be done faster, or are the mac geniuses in cupertino already at work on this?

My time machine is set to back up my mac using time capsule.. It has stopped backing up. When I check the icon, says "skip this back up". Before that it said it could not back up. Not sure what changed.

You can't use Find My Phone unless you activated it on the phone before you lost it.

Does Time Capsule need hard drive?

I recently reassembled my old 07 Time Capsule to use as a wireless N router as I dont want to spend money on a dedicated router. I dont use the capsule to backup anything and was wondering if the capsule would still function as a router if i took the drive out to use as a backup drive?
(I cant use it as is because i use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my data and it doesnt seem to like the time capsule disk)

CCC should be able to backup to a network drive.. try an erase and reset of the TC.. use names that are SMB compatible.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.. I would be surprised if it didn't work.. unless the disk is faulty.
But yes, you can remove the drive and just use the TC as a router.. and use a USB hard disk box for the drive direct to the computer.

SL is snow leopard.. If you are on 10.6.8 you are on SL. Your initial post says 10.5.6 but I assumed you had upgraded to Lion or worse Mountain Lion.
Don't whatever you do update.. that is out of the frying pan into the fire.
You might need to give more network info..
What is the TC plugged into for broadband.. are you on cable, adsl, other.. is the TC in router mode.
I find with SL, the later versions of TC firmware much worse than earlier ones.. So I do recommend you check your TC and if you are on 7.6.1 then downgrade to 7.5.2 .. you do this by holding the option key when you select update firmware.. it will show you downgrade options as well as upgrade.. only this is not possible with newest Gen 4 TC which are stuck on 7.6.x firmware.
How do you connect to the TC is the other question.. and with what?? Is this issue computer only or iphone ipad etc. ie is your network wireless or ethernet (or both) does the issue affect both?

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

Does time capsule back-up files which I am currently working on in a program?

If I am working on a file in a program, does time capsule back this file up? So if the program(third party) crashes after half an hour for example, can I still get the file back or would it be incomplete because it was open during back-up?

Most apps don't work with the actual file on disk; they copy it into memory and make the changes there.
Like most backup apps, Time Machine doesn't (can't) back up anything in memory, only things on disk.
When you Save a file you're working on, or done with, it goes to disk and will be included on the next backup.
Similarly, if the app has an "autosave" facitity, that will copy the "working" version to disk. Many apps do that to a separate file (often named the same as the original, but with something like "autosaved" appended). Lion apps that support Lion's AutoSave facility save it to the original file.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

HT3728 Why does time capsule every day or so stop backing up? Wifi still seems to work. Time capsule is only a few weeks old and is connected via Ethernet to the router and iMac.

Why does time capsule go missing from the network. The green light is lit at all times. I am unable to use the software the only thing I can do is power cycle time capsule, by unplugging and plugging the mains back in.

An external drive is much more reliable.. the issue has to do with network connection and loss of something.. although I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly what. The computer is still connected, still works on internet but has actually lost the hard disk.. lost and cannot find it without a restart.
If you want to try a few changes it can help.
1. If you are connected by ethernet make sure wireless is off in the imac.. having only one network connection is better than two.
2. Redo the TC setup with all short names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple has these long names with spaces and characters like apostrophe by default but they are not a help.
3. If the TC is the main router then reduce the dhcp lease time.. make it 20min.. that keeps everything refreshed and up to date.
None of those fix it but they may help stretch out the interval.

TM does the whole computer.. it is designed for home setup.. where people not that worried about security.
It is always possible for any user to access any other users account.. given enough time and skill. TM backups make it easier in a way.. I have tested it myself and I can recover TM backups from unknown user in a Time Capsule with an unknown password. It was tricky but anyone with brains can read the net.
There are solutions.. as I said.. if you are worried you should be using Encryption. Never depend on passwords in a shared computer to prevent access.
If your files are encrypted then even if a person recovers them they cannot read them without the key.
It may need for your files to be on a separate partition.

Of course for a person to hack in.. they have to want to do it.. in most people's home situation that is not a hassle.
For a business setup you would be using superior security.. proper active directory server etc.

An external drive connects to your Mac using either the USB or FireWire ports.
If your real question is to ask whether you can store other data on the Time Capsule drive....you can.

I maintain a Time Capsule for a small group of coworkers with Macs. It works fine. We bought a Mac Mini a week ago with 10.7.1 on it. When I set up Time Machine to use our common Time Capsule NAS I ran into a host of problems: frozen TM backup, corrupted OS, corrupted disk. I had to rebuild the disk and reinstall the OS. This happened twice, so I gave up on Time Machine backups on this Mini until Apple resolves the issue.
