Does time capsule replace my existing router?

I currently have a Linksys 8.11n router. Will the Time Capsule replace this router, or should I continue to network via the Linksys?

If the linksys is merely a router and plugged into your modem then you can replace it..
If it has the modem inside it,, then no you cannot replace it.

I want to set up my time capsule using my existing router.

The set up guide gives me instructions to open AirPort Utility, select Time Capsule and click continue. When I do it tells me that this requires switching networks, which is exactly what I don't think I want to do. Where am I going wrong?

plug the ethernet cable into your existing router, the other end into the WAN port on the TC. Set your router to be the DHCP server on the network.
Go to TC settings and manually configure it into BRIDGE mode. Make sure the DHCP server is turned off and it should work fine. I have a Netgear router as my ADSL router, this is connected to the internal house GB LAN. The TC is in my home office and as plugged into one of the GB ports in the office which then goes back to the office GB switch and the back to the main house GB switch and on to the Netgear router. My TC is then configured as described. I also have 4 Airport express base stations configured in the same way and all hardwired to the GB backbone. All of the Airports including the Netgear are set to the same network ID and this gives me single wireless roaming around the whole house for macbook, iPhone etc. As an aside my Xbox also works wirelessly on the same wireless network when I move it from den as does my Wii. The rest of the time it is hard wired.

Time Capsule added to existing router - Can this slowdown my whole network?

I recently added a Time Capsule (latest 1TB version) to my exisiting network. It looks like this:
Cable Modem -> DLink 1GB Gaming Router -> Time Capsule (Via CAT6)
The Time Capsule has 2 computers wired to it. All other devises on my network are wired to the Dlink.
I added the Time Capsule with the default settings as an addition to my existing network.
Around the same time, I have noticed that my Internet performance on all my devices had been spotty. I am getting lag on my Xbox Live games, with my voice chat breaking up (although I can hear other people fine.) My downloads are noticably slower on all PCs, Xboxs, and my AppleTV.
I went to DSL Reports and ran a test. It was in the 2000's for both up and download.
I have had trouble in the past with my Cable Internet. I suspect it is Comcast with some problem outside my house. I do not get their TV and know they put filters on the line. I put in a support call with them and they warned me that if they do any work inside the house, there will be a fee...
Does it sound like adding the Time Capsule could have caused a general slow down accessing the Internet from all my devices, even ones not connected to the Time Capsule? (I only have 2 PCs wired to it.) (And I am not using wireless on anything. It is all Cat5 and Cat6 connections)
What should I be getting from DSL Reports on my speeds?
Is there a utiltiy that can show me if the speeds/connections in my house are OK?

Is that the exact wording of the option you chose? In AirPort Utility I see options of "Create a wireless network", "Join a wireless network", and "Extend a wireless network". (Perhaps the difference is due to language usage.) The option to "Join a Wireless Network" is only useful for sharing disks and printers. It doesn't support Ethernet ports.

With some options there's a checkbox to "Allow Ethernet Clients". If you see that, try it.

How to use the time capsule with my existing router?

Here is my situation. I have Alltel PCD UM185 USB modem for their mobile broadband internet. I have a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router which I plug the usb modem into to share the internet through a wireless network which has WPA security on it. I want to use my 1TB time capsule to backup the computers in my house wirelessly and not as a router. What connection do I need to make and how to do I setup the time capsule this way? I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help in advance. If you need more information just ask.

Steven's solution will work just fine if you want to connect the Time Capsule using ethernet.
You might also consider configuring the the Time Capsule to "Join" the wireless network. In this type of configuration, backups would occur only over wireless and you could locate the Time Capsule virtually anywhere it can receive a good, strong wireless connection. Important Note...the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled in this type of configuration, so you will not be able to connect using ethernet.
Open AirPort Utility and click Continue

Time Capsule with an existing router

Hi,
As a recently converted Windows user, I now have a Macbook Pro & iMAC all running OS X 10.5.3. Also as a hardened computer user, I fully understand the need to do regular backups, so the thought of using Time Machine with a Time Capsule, with the added benefit of upgrading my Wireless G network to N, this certainly looks like a great idea.
However, my ISP won't let me connect to them with a router other than their own. So my question is, are there any conflicts with adding the Time Capsule to my network, and using it like my current Netgear Access Point and linking it to my switch, so that I can use the wireless features, but not the built in router functionality.
Or, is there a viable alternative, that will allow me to backup both my Laptop & Desktop using Time Machine.
I also have to be able to link my Wii, psp & a PC laptop to the wireless access point, so this has to be part of the equation.

There's a very easy solution to your dilemma. The Time Capsule is capable of being run in bridge mode, which effectively turns off the router capabilities of the TC and lets it act as a wireless access point. All you need to do is to go into your AirPort Utility, select Manual Setup, and under Internet select Off (Bridge Mode) for Internet Connection. Then you simply attach the Time Capsule to one of your router's LAN ports and you should be set. Furthermore, you can also choose to set your Time Capsule to broadcast 802.11n only (5 GHz) or 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) (whichever one suits your needs) and have an N-only access point. Just be sure to give your TC an unique SSID.

I bought the TC a few months back, got home, went through the setup and was off and running. Well, about three weeks later it just sporadically began disconnecting from the network and losing wireless transmission so I unplugged it and went back to using my wireless DSL router as primary with a separate external as my backup disk. I finally have time to set the TC back up, but I have a silly question: Does the internet from my wall, plug directly into my TC rendering it my wireless router therefore allowing me to ditch the DSL router that came with my service? Or does the internet still plug into the router and then into my TC? Thanks!

Check in the airport utility.. does it have an error of double NAT.. if not it has automatically bridged the TC..
Bridge means the router part is bypassed. You need only one router in the network.. since your modem has wireless and probably multiple ethernet ports it is a router.. the TC must be in bridge..
Unfortunately the change in airport means I cannot show you what bridge looks like in version 6...
So if you run Lion or ML.. there is a strong likelihood that the TC is bridged as that is automatic process ..
If not there will be a double NAT error.

1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

It depends on what the sky router exactly is..
If it is a modem, then you definitely have to keep it.. is it satellite or some sort of wireless internet??
If it is a router that plugs into an existing modem then in all likelihood the TC can replace it.
If the sky router can be bridged then the sky router can be kept but the TC work as the router.
And finally even if the sky router is locked and you cannot do anything.. the TC can still work as a bridged device to provide backup and wireless connection within your network.
So however the situation it is possible to use your TC.

It's not clear just what you mean.
If you're backing-up your Mac, via the Time Machine software, to a Time Capsule or external HD, then yes, by default, Time Machine will copy everything the first time. Subsequent backups will copy only what's new or changed.
If you mean, can you back up other data on a Time Capsule, no, not with Time Machine. It can only back up TO a network location, not FROM one.

HT3728 Why does time capsule every day or so stop backing up? Wifi still seems to work. Time capsule is only a few weeks old and is connected via Ethernet to the router and iMac.

Why does time capsule go missing from the network. The green light is lit at all times. I am unable to use the software the only thing I can do is power cycle time capsule, by unplugging and plugging the mains back in.

An external drive is much more reliable.. the issue has to do with network connection and loss of something.. although I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly what. The computer is still connected, still works on internet but has actually lost the hard disk.. lost and cannot find it without a restart.
If you want to try a few changes it can help.
1. If you are connected by ethernet make sure wireless is off in the imac.. having only one network connection is better than two.
2. Redo the TC setup with all short names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple has these long names with spaces and characters like apostrophe by default but they are not a help.
3. If the TC is the main router then reduce the dhcp lease time.. make it 20min.. that keeps everything refreshed and up to date.
None of those fix it but they may help stretch out the interval.

I would like to know if time capsule can replace my router? I have a couple of reasons for possibly getting a TC. One reason is to hopefully stream my movies to my Apple TV2, without the need for powering up my iMac, the other is to use the Airport Express card to extend the reach of my WIFI. I just hoped that my modem wouldn't be required as well.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule and then use the setup "wizard" on your Mac to configure the Time Capsule.
It will suggest that you set up the Time Capsule to create a new wireless network. If you don't want or need another wireless network, you can turn off the wireless function of the Time Capsule and use it as wired hard drive only.
Leave the Ethernet cable connected at all times. If you need to locate the Time Capsule in a different area, you can put it anywhere that the Ethernet cable will reach up to about 330 feet or 100 meters.
The only exception to using an Ethernet cable would be if your existing wireless network is provided by another Apple router. TC is much better than it was.. make sure you keep it cool.. place it up from the bench on a couple of pencils.. that stuff about conductive rubber.. ignore it.. rubber in all its forms is an insulator and holds in heat. If it does start running really hot.. it has a fault and you should take it back.. Same with hard disk.. they occasionally go bad.. so backup to it.. fine.. storing files on it.. no don't do it.
Remember it is covered under your computer applecare.. so if you have any computer with extended applecare it will cover TC with certain conditions.. but that gives the TC effectively 3years warranty.. after that.. dispose of it and buy a new one.. the TC is not going to be reliable as the hard disk has been starting and stopping multiple times every day for 3years.. just don't trust them.
Wireless is ok.. I don't think it is particularly good range wise. Although Apple said how much better it was than previous Generations.. I have had all 4 now.. and performance in my experience was line ball between all of them. Apple design their routers to work very well with AEBS or AEx so if you want to extend wireless it is simple.. just it doesn't work with any other brand.. apple now reflecting a rather dark empire tendency.. they used to critize in others.
Clarification question...how do I backup my current files on the Lacie to the TC? Would that simply be connecting the two devices via USB and copying over?
Backing up TM files?? Not a good idea.. TM works differently on local disks and network disks.. and TC is best left to do its own stuff. If you mean moving actual file storage.. don't. The TC is not a file store.. it is a backup target.. TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive .. so you would have to buy 3rd party software anyway.
Also USB on the TC is purely for printer and USB connected disk.. but you cannot directly copy from one to the other.. it would have to copy over network to the computer and then back to the TC.. it will be 2x to 4x faster if you do want to copy files to use Lacie plugged into the computer.. and copy to the TC. At least files are only going one way.
