Does Time Machine only work with external HDD's and Networks?

I have a Mac Mini that I just replaced the optical drive with a hard drive. This second HDD is formated into two partitions, with one of them being for my Time Machine backups, the other a media scratch drive.
When I try to choose this volume in setting up Time Machine, I get an error message that says, +"Are you sure you want to back up to the same disk your original data is on?"+ The message goes on to explain that +"the volume you have chosen for storing backups is on the same disk as the volume containing your data... you should back up to a volume on a different disk."+
The volume that I have selected IS on a different disk than my start-up system drive and the data to be backed up IS NOT on the same disk as the disk storing the backups. System Profiler defines my startup HDD as "BSD Name: disk0" and my second HDD as "disk1," with the two partitions "disk1s2" and "disk1s3." Mount Point for the start-up HDD is "/" and the two partitions on the second HDD are "/Volumes/Scratch Disk" and /Volumes/Time Machine." These two volumes show up as options when I "Choose Backup Disk" in Time Machine, but not the Mini's startup HDD.
Does Time Machine allow the use of second internal HDD? I have an external HDD, but it has a clone of my start-up drive on it. Thanks for any help.

Chris, excluding the other volume could certainly be the issue since the two options that I'm given for a backup volume are both on the same hard disk. The start-up system HDD is not listed. Maybe the message is referring to this, rather than to the start-up disk.
Not until after I selected "use this volume anyway," did I get to the "Option" screen to exclude items from the backup. When I selected "+" I was surprised to find the other volume, Scratch Disk, listed along with the start-up HDD as being included in the backup routine. So I selected Scratch Disk as one of the items to exclude.
As V.K. mentions, the cautionary message is rather vague as to what exactly it is referring to. Thanks.

I've got a La Cie big ethernet disk that I've been using for my back-ups and finally stumbled across time machine and thought it would work better than the La Cie back-up software, however Time Machine doesn't seem to want to know anything about any other mounted disks unless they're through an airport.
My ethernet disk is connected through a netgear router and mounts just fine on my pwr book.
I am doing something wrong or is this just a nifty system feature to coax folks into buying a time capsule (even if they're on a pc!).

Be extremely careful when using Terminal. It is a direct interface into UNIX, the underpinning of OSX. There are few protections against making a mistake, which can cause untold damage.
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: user-xxxxxx:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name). It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor (unless it's been changed via Terminal > Preferences).
Copy the following, exactly, after the prompt, then press Return:

I'm having trouble with my Time Capsule Airport, I made all the settings according to the manual, but there has been a connection problem with my iMac. When I finish my work I turn off the imac and then again when they return to work and care, it can not connect to Time Capsule Airport, making it impossible to remove the files and make back up by Time Machine only works when I turn off and turn on the Airport Time Capsule , but I think this may end up with the unit. In the airport utility bring up your Time Capsule.

Please also make sure you are set to ipv6 in your wireless or ethernet .. whichever is used.. and do tell which.
This is wifi in your computer.
The following are important..
DO not use long names with spaces and non-alphanumeric names.
Use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TC name. TCgen5
Wireless name TCwifi
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
read apple instructions to help with TM and TC.. they did finally admit it has issues in Mavericks.

I've mistakenly deleted Time Machine backups from my external HDD. How do I fix this?!

I manually deleted several Time Machine backups from my external HDD. Whenever I attempt to empty trash, it states (error code -22) has occurred. How do I fix my predicament?
I understand (now) that I should never do this and ONLY delete from the Time Machine app itself but I did not assume this would be so complex by taking a blind stab at it. How do I either a) place the Time Machine backups where the originated (Put Back is not an option when right-clicked) or b) successfully delete these so I can clear my bin.

iPod touch is Wi-Fi only, yes. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by games from home Mac, but you can purchase game apps in iTunes and sync them to your iPod.

So if more than 4GB RAM, will it do harm to the hardware of T400? Or just only 4GB will be used, and no any harm?

That doc was probably written when there were not 4GB DIMMs available, or at least being commonly used. T400 will work with any combination of 1GB, 2GB and 4GB DIMMs, up to 8GB total. I tried single 8GB DIMM and it didn't work

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive. But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

Time Machine not working with Verbatim USB2TB External HDD

Problem with Time Machine using Verbatim USB2TB (Verbatim # 96865) external hard drive in regular and safe boot. According to the Verbatim website, this external drive is compatiable with MAC OS 10+ and can be formatted to the specific Mac filesystems.
The following list of events below happen irregardless of running in regular or safe boot, so I noted my last attempt at a backup while in Safe Boot.
Before this last attempt, I successfully zeroed out the data on the drive in regular boot.
As you will see below, the drive works just fine until Time Machine gets it grimy digits on it and kills it like South Park kills Kenny.

The external drive is malfunctioning, or the data cable is bad, or you have another malfunctioning device on the bus, or there's an internal hardware fault.

Does time machine need a dedicated external hard drive or can I partition it?

I am trying to figure out the best way to back up my husband's computer. He has too much data so I need to get about 80 GB off his computer on to an external drive and then need to back that up as well. Right now I have two external drives one dedicated to time machine and one that backs up as a carbon copy bootable backup. I think both external drives are 500GB, but he is on the computer and I don't want to fuss with having him get off right now. I ordered an additional external drive so I have some where for his 80 GB of his data. I can take one of the external drives currently used for time machine and partition it (mac OS journaled) and use one of the parts for time machine and the other for the 80 GB of data. Will this affect our ability to get data off of time machine in the event his 5 year old hard drive dies? The 80 GB of data includes important photos, so I would like them in two places. I would consider cloud, but he is running Leopard and I know that iCloud only works with Lion.

Before asking this question, I browsed the internet and some people advised that a hard drive needed to be dedicated. It seems now that if I partition the external drive and have a big enough drive that I should be ok.

Does ws adapter only work with asynchronous web service?

Hi all,
can you please confirm whether or not ws adapter (PI 7.1) only works with asynchronous web service?
I have created an async. outbound service interface in PI 7.1, generated the client proxy in ECC, created an web service based on the proxy, wrote a test program to call the web service (PI scenario uses ws adapter in the sender CC). Everything works fine.
Then I did the same thing with sync. outbound service interface. I got exception while calling the web service in ECC.
I've heard that ws adapter is designed for async. communication. Does it mean that it won't work with sync. web service?
I haven't seen any official SAP document saying taht ws adapter only works for async. web service. If you have any, can you please share it?

Thank you all for your information.
The error I got when calling the proxy with logical port (web service) is:
SOAP:1,007 SRT: Unsupported xstream found: ("HTTP Code 404 : Not Found")
I will debug it to see what exactly happens. And will keep you guys updated.
Just debugged, the error is because the http header's content type is text/html while it should be test/xml. However this type is set by the ws runtime, not by the application. Anybody has an idea about this?
