Does Time Machine replace changed files and delete old files?

I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, but my son is a NEW CONVERT to the Mac; has uses Dells for years. He has a new Macbook Pro with Leopard. I use SuperDuper! with my Tiger Mini Mac.
I don't understand what Time Machine does. Does it continually update files on the target device, and if so how does it handle deleted and renamed files on the source device.
Thanks.

Time Machine takes a snapshot of the drive it is backing up every hour. If a file is new, renamed or modified since its last backup, Time Machine will make a physical copy of that file. To conserve drive space Time Machine will only make hard links back to its previously backed up files for files that exist on its source drive which remain unchanged. Hard links work in a somewhat similar fashion as aliases. If a file has been deleted Time Machine won't make a copy or hard link. You can read about how hard links work in Time Machine in this Ars Technica review.
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
If a file is not on the hard drive for over an hour and is deleted before Time Machine makes its hourly backup that file will not be in any of Time Machine's backups.
Time Machine only retains the first hourly backup of the day as its daily backup. The other hourly backups get deleted in the course of the day. That means that to be retained in the daily backups a file must be on the hard drive for over a day or be physically present on the source drive for the first backup of the day.
After a month, Time Machine retains the daily backup made on the same day of the week as the initial backup as its weekly backup. If a file is on the source drive for less than a week and is not in the daily backup retained as the weekly it will end up being deleted when Time Machine thins its daily backups.
When the Time Machine volume fills up, Time Machine will start deleting its earliest backups to make room for new ones.

  • VBScript to read the content of a .csv file and delete old files mentioned in the .csv

    I have a Windows 2003 file server.
I have generated a report in .csv format, about the files which are older than 1 year.
I need a VBScript to read the .csv file and delete the files which are enlisted there.
Can someone please help me with this?

Look into the "Learn" link above.  There are resources and instructions on how to write VBScript code.  Look into how to use the FileSystemObject.

  • Does Time Machine track changes to disks made by other operating systems?

I run 10.8 Mountain Lion on my main partition but also occassionally boot to a copy of 10.7 Lion on a separate partition in order to run a version of Quickbooks for Mac that isn't supported in 10.8.  Time machine is only turned on in 10.8 and backs up all internal disks and partitions when I'm logged into that operating system.  My question is does time machine in 10.8 notice changes made to any of the internal disks made by me while I was booted into 10.7 Lion?
Occassionally I reboot into 10.7 Lion to run Quickbooks for Mac 2011, do work, make changes to files, ect.  When I log back into 10.8 Mountain Lion and Time Machine does it's normal back up thing, does it recognize changes that were made to internal disks, folders, and files that were made when I was previously booted into 10.7 Lion?  Or does Time Machine in 10.8 Mountain Lion only recognize changes that are made when it's running?
    Thanks Peeps!

    Yes.

  • I want rsync only download new files and keep old files

I install Arch i686 in home and in home I do not have internet connection , so at work I download all packages I need with this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and move them to home and then copy them to
    /var/cache/pacman/arch
    and install packages with pacman
after two days , I run this command
    rsync -avrt --bwlimit=58 rsync://mirror.datacenter.by/arch//extra/os/any/ /home/ddd/i686/
and I see rsync get last packages again and use many Bandwidth
how I tell rsync only download new files and keep old files

    rsync manpage says the following:
-u, --update                skip files that are newer on the receiver
          --inplace               update destination files in-place
--append                append data onto shorter files
--append-verify         --append w/old data in file checksum
I guess you need to add -u flag.
Reading manpages is the highest virtue in GNU/Linux.

  • Why does Time Machine fail to restore and keep the original file after I have provided my Admin password?

I'm attempting to recover a group of lost files from Time Machine. The files are backups from a mobile app within User/LibraryMobile Documents/.
I'm able to find the lost files, but Time Machine failed to restore them after I select 'Keep Both' and then enter my Admin Password. The screen returns to the desktop and the finder window for the file I'm trying to recover, but nothing else happens.
    I hope someone can help.

  • How does Time Machine track changes?

My Leopard upgrade got stuck with a minute to go - I had to hold down the power button to restart my Mac, but to my surprise Leopard launched and everything seemed to work fine. I set up Time Machine and it's been running without problems, backing up to my 2nd internal drive. The only problem I noticed was that a few hidden files weren't hidden - presumably it hadn't finished cleaning up after itself. So, I carried on using Leopard until today when I finally decided it might be a good idea to run the installer again. The installation completed fine, and everything is running nicely.
My question is: will time machine track any changes that have been made from re-running the installer, or does it only track changes that are made while Leopard is running? Should I switch off Time Machine, delete the backups, and start again, or will it handle these changes?

When I log back into 10.8 Mountain Lion and Time Machine does it's normal back up thing, does it recognize changes that were made to internal disks, folders, and files that were made when I was previously booted into 10.7 Lion?
    Yes.

  • Mount time machine, how to open and recover .inprogress file

so this is how i fixed and mounted a time machine capsule ( it was extended journaled Case-sensitive) to MacBook Pro ( non-case sensitive) and recovered files from .inprogress file. for me it worked like a charm and lets see if this can help you too.
Found a way to figure it out! (mount drive). So I went to my gf's laptop and created a new backup file for her ( just the file or a new sparsebundle.  the info.plist , token and info.bckup are the files that we need from here ). If no mac is available, create a new backup in pc but it has to be to the same time capsule  ( the files that we need and create will point and tell the sparse bundle a new path to time capsule ) To het there you go to the sparse bundle Dmg, right click and go to "show contents". So this is how i change it, I open 2 finder windows and got each sparse bundle in it ( old one or damaged and new one), righ click on both > show contents and then  replace these files from the new one to the damaged one (  info.plist , token and info.bckup ). That's it. The time machine at least mounted on my desktop and could see the files. Now for opening the .inprogress file; go to Automator >new workflow > and drag in this order;  get selected finder items, get folder contents and open finder items. While the .inprogress file i selected, press "run" or play button in Automator. That's it. Now you may try to drag to desktop but it will say "the volume has the wrong case sensitive for a backup" but you should have access. Now for copying or move to somewhere; get another hard drive ( external) and format it to the same as time capsule ( extended journaled case sensitive is my case), once it's done, right click and go to info> at the bottom uncheck "ignore ownership" and close it. Now you can copy from .inprogress file to just formatted hard drive and from hard drive to laptop. Here's the annoying part; it will treat it as a special folder ( when you paste it in you desktop it's gonna ask for password, if you wanna move it somewhere else it's going to do it as well. But at least you can recover the file ) . once this process It's done just reformat your time capsule.
    Cheers,

well, after you transfer everything to new hard drive and to avoid the putting a password everytime you move the folders, richt click on drive > get info > check again the "ignore ownership" option and you shouldnt have any problems transfering back folders

  • Time machine did not warn before deleting older files

I am running Snow Leopard and TimeMachine is off meaning I start backup manually whenever I see it fit. I have, however, in the TM settings checked the 'warn before removing old files' (might not be the exact English wording).
I think that when last time I gave the command 'Backup now' there was no confirmation needed but removing started immediately. Can it be so?

    nyberpe1 wrote:
Just one more question: Is the meaning and behaviour of ""Warn when old backups are deleted" still the same at Lion?
    Your welcome.
I don't use TimeMachine or Lion, I consider the two inferior.
Cloning OS X is superior as I can boot and use the computer like before, so I use Carbon Copy Cloner for that.
I'm not too pleased with Lion, all the depressing gray, the UI changes etc, so I'm not using it and likely won't ever, just switch to Mountain Lion when it arrives this summer.
You know a OS X version is bad if Apple releases the next one a year ahead of scheduale.
If your thinking of taking the Lion leap of faith, better check here first. (and clone your 10.6 drive first)

  • Does time machine "restore" change all subsequent versions?

    Hi all,
This evening I some how accidently "restored" a document I had been working on to a version I started about a month ago.  I honestly have no idea how this happened since I hadn't even opened Time Machine when noticed the document was the old version (the program and document had been open on my laptop for days). Anyway, I thought maybe I could just go back to the version from yesterday or a few days ago, but it seems that once today's version is restored to March 28th's version, all subsequent versions are also restored.  Is this right?? Am I missing something here?  If there is any way to find a previous version of this document (that is not the March 28th one!), I would be estactic.
    Thanks!

Your backups never change. Restore again from a snapshot taken just before the unwanted restoration.

  • How does Time Machine Handle separate Boot and User Volumes?

I recently installed an SSD and set it up as my boot drive, and I'm using another hard drive for my Home folder, if I ever run into a scenario that I need to restore my entire system, how will Time Machine handle it?
Will it restore my system back to the drives that they came off of?, in other words will my Boot volume be restored back to the SSD and my Home folder back to the hard drive, or will it restore everything back on the one disk it asks me to select before I click restore?

    Michael Hoover wrote:
Ok, so if I tried to access a backup from booting with the Snow Leopard install disk I won't be able to select which volume I need to restore?
You would restore the OSX volume via the procedure in #14 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
You would restore the data-only volume separately, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in the FAQ.
I guess I would be better off doing incremental backups with Carbon Copy Cloner on 2 partitions on the same volume.
That would also take two separate operations to restore. (It would be a good idea to do such backups +*in addition+* to Time Machine backups, in case there's a problem with either disk drive or backup app, or a user error like erasing the wrong disk.)
Your scenario is actually quite unlikely; you'd rarely need to restore both volumes at once. If the SSD fails, you'd only need to restore it; if the HD fails, you'd only need to restore that.
It would get a bit more complicated if you get a new Mac, especially one with a single volume. That's one of the reasons it's a good idea to keep at least a minimal Admin account on the OSX volume.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • I deleted a specific file folder from my Seagate backup drive, via Time Machine. Instead of only deleting that file, it deleted ALL my files for that date.

    1. Why? I was quite obviously selecting one file folder ONLY.
    2. Is there any way to retrieve the lost items?
    3. How do I avoid this happening in the future?

Never had any issues while deleting specific files/folders from a time machine backup.
However, regarding the original post, what do you mean by "file folder"? Did you select a FILE for deletion, or a FOLDER? These two terms tend to be quite different, you know.
If you selected a FOLDER, then ALL FILES inside the folder have been deleted. If you selected a single FILE, then only that file should have been deleted. "Delete all backups of..." is a completely different story.

  • Time Machine "don't have permission" for old files – do NOT have old computer anymore

So I am trying to retrieve a file from an old time machine backup from my old computer. However, I keep getting a message on all the folders that I do not have permission to view them (they also have the little "do not enter/NO" symbol). I ended up creating a new user when I got my new computer, so I am aware that time machine believes those backups were created by someone else. Problem is, I do not have my old computer anymore.
I have been able to access some of the permissions for the folders via command+i (more information); is there some way I can manipulate this and give my new user access to the files? Or could I use the time machine backups to recreate my old user on my new computer? Or is there some code I can enter into terminal??
PLEASE, someone help me! I really need to access these old files. I've added an image to show my setup and where I am having these issues.

    Thanks SilverSkyRat.
I tried the first suggestion, but no luck. My current user is "Daisy" but I also tried another possible name, but was told there is another user with the same name. When I tried to logout and login to the other user to try it out, I couldn't find it. So no luck with that method.
I tried the second one, but when I go to time machine, only my new "computer" is available ("Isabella's Backups" instead of "Daisy's Backups"). I went to the "Star Wars" screen, is there another way that I can choose a different computer for the backup source?
    Thanks again.
And don't worry, I've backuped my current computer.

  • Accessing All Files in a Folder and Deleting Old Files

My problem is that I have an applet that communicates with a servlet and the servlet stores user designed objects on the server. These objects are piling up and the older ones are no longer useful. What I want to do is have a method in the servlet that periodically scans this folder and deletes files that are over two months old. Any advice on how I could do this is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I think it's Linux, but I'm not sure. This is for a job that was done a while ago and I'm just revisiting to touch up a few things.

    plz send me reply

    Hi Nagalakshmi,
If you want to download a file on to the presentation server from your application then please have a look at the methods listed under the OO class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES from transaction SE24 to perform similar operations as requested by you on files on presentation server.
However if u are considering downloading and then deleting a file on the application server, then u would need commands like OPEN DATASET, TRANSFER and CLOSE and eventually DELETE DATASET.
F1 on the commands should help you along.
    Hope this helps.
