Does Time Machine work well with a portable drive?

As the drive is not always going to be connected to my Macbook Pro. If, say, I connect it once a week to back up Time Machine will that be a result or should I use another backup system? Thanks for any advice.

Will the Pro often be in range of your network, and the iMac shown in your signature (or another desktop Mac)?
If so, there's an alternative; the Pro can back up via your network to a "shared" drive connected to the iMac. Once set up, that will happen hourly, as long as the Pro is awake and in range. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
If not, Time Machine will send a warning after 10 days without a backup. After several days, depending on the volume of changes, the next backup may be somewhat longer.

  • Does Time Machine work even with two user accounts?

For reasons of corrupted Preferences (i.e. plists) I had to create a new User Account (where I had to "recreate" all personal settings/preferences) and transfer my data to this new account. Until I have verified all data and settings over the next few days I don't want to delete the "old" User Account, as you will understand.
Before creating the new user account, I have used Time Machine to backup my data (to a 2GB external HD). My question is: since TimeMachine backs up a Computer and not a User, can I now continue to use TimeMachine and be able to switch between users when in TimeMachine?
I think that the answer will be Yes, but I just want to be a 100% sure that I am not overwriting anything on the 'old' user account.

Correct. All user accounts, permissions, etc., are backed-up separately.
Just as on your internal HD, one user, even an Admin user, won't normally have permission to see or restore a different user's files.

  • Does Time Machine work with Networked drives yet...?

Yes, I did search, and nothing recent came up.
I have a 500 GB lacie hard drive that is attached to my router, and it works great.
Without using any of those hacks, should Time Machine work properly with a networked drive?

No. At present on drives attached to a Time Capsule seem to work.
My AEBS has a 500GB USB drive attached - and Time Machine won't use it.
My Time Capsule has both the internal 1TB disk and a 1TB external Western Digital drive attached - and the Time Capsule drive and all of the partitions on the USB drive are available for use by Time Machine.
Time Capsule comes with a new version of the Airport Utility (5.3) - I don't see that this is available as a separate download right now.
Perhaps Airports will support Time Machine in the future - but that is by no means guaranteed. I don't think many people know what the hardware differences between an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule really are.

  • External disk attached to APE - does Time Machine work with it?

    Hi everyone,
I'm interested in getting the AirPort Extreme (802.11n) for a few reasons, but notably to attach an external disk and use it with Time Machine.
I've heard mixed results, however, about whether this is possible or not. After some Google-ing I've discovered this feature was initially not available for the official release of Leopard, but was re-introduced in 2008 sometime as a software update. But after reviewing the product page, it makes no mention to Time Machine and it's ability to backup to external AirPort disks. Only the Time Capsule product page gets this kind of treatment.
So the question is... does Time Machine play nicely with AirPort disks or not? I was hoping you guys would be able to debunk the myths so I can get a straight-forward answer so I can make a decision on if I'll purchase it or not.
And while on the topic... can multiple people use the external AirPort disk at the same time? For example, I currently have a DIR-628 router (which I'll be taking back if Time Machine plays nicely with AirPort disks) and with the silly proprietary software from D-Link, it only lets one computer use it at one time, having each user remember to connect and disconnect each time they want to use it to share files or backup using Time Machine. Not a biggie, but kind of annoying.
Thanks for any help I receive, I really appreciate it!

As I said above, Apple does not officially support this operation. So if you have any problems or questions about using the disk with Time Machine, Apple will not provide support.
True and correct. This is likely because of their misguided SOX interpretation, which they seem to think precludes the addition of features not available at sale time through firmware updates.
Sort of like putting a diesel engine in a Toyota Prius. You may be able to do it but it is not officially supported.
It’s really nothing like that at all.
To answer the OP, yes, you can. I’ve been backing up my machine to a disk attached to my AEBS since the day the firmware supported it, and it works great for me.

  • Does time machine work with the trash folder?

Does time machine work with the trash folder? So if I have the entire aperture library backed up to the time machine. Is it safe to empty the trash folder in aperture? I am able to recover files from time machine later?

So make a top-level Project called "_Circular File".  Put Images in there that you what to have out of your way but not discarded.
It really is good and proper to treat the Trash as trash.  I instruct everyone to _empty_ the Aperture Trash at the end of _every_ session.  The reason is this: it is the only time you will remember whether it is safe to delete the items in there.  If you wait, you will then waste time trying to answer "Did I really mean to throw that out?" or, periodically, you'll give up trying to remember, and will empty the Trash without reviewing it.  At the end of every session, examine the Trash, confirm that the items there are trash, and empty it.
Shocking, perhaps, but you should also empty your system trash every day.  The real-life equivalents are good guides here.  No-one in an office hoards their trash.  If you mean to throw something out, throw it out.  If you don't mean to throw it out, do not put it in the trash.
I don't know how TM handles the Aperture Trash.  I do know, however, that I would not expect this behavior to remain consistent, and would absolutely recommend against a workflow based on it.

Does Time Machine work with a network attached storage drive?
    Thanks!
    John

the only supported NAS for TM backups is Time Capsule. it also works with drives connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station. al other NASes are unsupported. there are hacks to make TM work with them but you are on your own if you use them

How does time machine work when backing up a mac pro?
Considering the fact that the mac pro can hold 8TB and a external (non NAS) hard drive can hold only 2TB does time machine only backup the OS disk.

Time Machine will backup everything by default, on every disk in your Mac.
Choose System Preferences > Options to exclude items. You could exclude everything except your OS...but I'd think it is your data that's more important to you, if you have to make choices.
    See...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018
While it's true you can store almost 8TB, how much do you think you'll actually store? If you have 1TB of data you want to store then a 2TB drive can do it. Also when your TM drive begins to get full it will begin deleting the oldest backups to make room.
You could also get a Drobo with 8 bays...

  • Time machine working well but I can't find backed up files fast enough?

Time machine working well but I can't find backed up files fast enough. When I look in Time machine backups I'm looking in a folder and I can't remember what it was, but I go back in time and the finder goes from 98 files to 100 files, how do I find which 2 files were the ones deleted? Going back and forth from past to present is a pain! I need to figure out which file it was faster? Have any ideas?
With the new "Find" feature it actually highlights what you are looking for such as in Safari. Does Time Machine have a feature to highlight the files/folders that were deleted really from the present?

It sounds like you aren't looking for any file in particular, but notice a change in number of files and would like to know what changed rather than knowing that a specific file is now missing.
that's a good point, and it appears that TM is not setup to describe the changes over time. If I recall correctly, it has a plug-in ability, so maybe somebody will fill in that void.

Realize that people that aren't having problems tend not to "brag" that they're doing fine.  Those that are having problems are usually very vocal.  So a lot of the "bad reviews" may just be those that had a problem, not necessarily the real experience of the millions of people that are doing just fine.
...and I'm afraid to download it and my computer is 2009, yours runs smoothly?
I'm running Lion fine on my 2008 MBP (4,1. 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB) and late 2009 Mini (2.0GHz C2D, 8GB.)  Minimum RAM for Lion is 2GB, but IMHO you really want 4GB.  If you have a lot of apps open (or have demanding apps like Photoshop,) then get more RAM if you machine can handle it.
Also, make sure the rest of your apps or drivers are up to date before upgrading.  Incompatible drivers for things like printers and such are what I've found to cause a lot of stability problems.

Does Time Capsule works as a External Hard Drive?

The Time Capsule works as a network drive.
An external drive connects to your Mac using either the USB or FireWire ports.
If your real question is to ask whether you can store other data on the Time Capsule drive....you can.

  • HT1284 Does time machine work with Mountain Lion?

I had time machine set-up on my old iMac and had everything copied over to my new iMac.  Time machine isn't working.  I can't get it to recongize my external hard drive to back it up.  Does time machine not work with mountain lion?

Have you plugged the external drive to a different USB port?  Also, I would suggest you reset the PRAM.  If you still have the issue after you have done all this, it may be an issue with your external drive.  Try testing it on another computer.

  • Does Time Machines works with WD My Cloud 2TB ???

    Hi,
Does anyone has gotten Time Machine on Yosemite to work with Western Digital´s My Cloud 2TB on a network???
WD products says it can but that is apple´s support who should help because is Time Machine how is giving me the trouble...
    Can anyone help???
I got the WD My cloud as a present and I cannot return it...
    Thanks,
    I.

You shouldn't use Time Machine on any network drive besides Time Capsule. despite hard drive manufacturer claims, Time Machine is not supported on those drives. Even if you get it to work, it will eventually fail, most likely when you need to restore.

  • Does Canon XF100 work well with Final Cut Pro

Does the Canon XF 100 work well with Final Cut Pro 7.03

I have read the information about this camera and I have looked at several discussion groups.  Apparently you cannot edit in native format with this camera. This has been confirmed to me by a Canon rep.  You have to bring in footage thru log and transfer which means it takes more time as it converts.  I have never had to do this before.  Because I have always imported thru log and capture.  So because I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me if they are using the camera and if it works well inspite of it.  Or anyone has a better camera recommendation but in the price range of the XF100.
    Thanks,

  • Is it true that Thunderbird does no longer works well with POP mail servers and only works well with IMAP servers?

Our email host is telling us that our outdated POP mail server doesn't work well with Thunderbird and it the reason we're having sporadic difficulty sending out emails with attachments when using Thunderbird (no problems when sending emails directly from the email host's web portal and bypassing Thunderbird). We'll often get notification when using Thunderbird and trying to attach PDF'd documents to an email that "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server timed out." The email host company is advising that this problem will be solved if we upgrade from the free POP email to the not free IMAP email. True? Or are they just using this Thunderbird problem as an excuse to sign us up for unnecessary services?

I think they are using this as an excuse.
Messages are sent via SMTP. Both, POP and IMAP are protocols to receive mail.
In any case, it would be '''their''' 'outdated POP mail server', not yours.
Check this article for troubleshooting the problem.
