Does turn by turn use your data

does turn by turn use your data

Then why do I get dual notifications for Facebook messenger and emails on my phone and iPad Air when I haven't been using them for a while?
I rarely ever have to reconnect to the Wi-Fi via the lease time thing on my LG G3 or iPad Air.
My laptop and desktop happens whenever I turn them on. Then I have to renew my lease but as long as they are on and the Wi-Fi isn't freaking out, I can keep it going forever.

Thanks for the quick response. What you have said makes sense but there is no rhyme or reason to he data used. I reset my cellular data counter to zero so both sent and received read zero. I was connected to wifi and let the phone to go into sleep mode. I waited about ten minutes and sent myself the same email four times, each with a 750 kb attachment. It was sent to my .me address so it was push mail on my phone. Sure enough I checked a minute later while bringing the phone out of sleep mode and checked the data. It showed just 10kb sent but 1mb received which just doesn't tally with the 4 x 750kb mails received. It just isn't making sense.

I thought I had read where the iOS4 (or maybe just the iPhone 4) was supposed to be able to keep wifi connections alive while inactive. If the phone is sitting there on a charger with a wifi connection available, why use the 3G?

  • Does Pushed e-mail use 3G data?

If an iPad is set to push email, does it use 3G data when screen is off and iPad is idle? Or does it only use the 3G data when I am actually using it?

Agree with "A macuser" but... mail will get pushed to your ipad even in idle mode. If you happen to be on a 3g network the traffic will be on your 3g account. If you're on WiFi, then it doesn't go on your account, as AMACUSER said. I've had my ipad for 3 weeks now and I'll probably get a larger 3g data plan. For now, I put mine in airplane mode to avoid 3g traffic when I don't need it.

  • Does it cost to use mobile data

I was wondering whether it costs money to use mobile data because many people say it does but I hav been using it nd it hasn't taken any money off
So I just wanted to know if mobile data actually costs money

Your cellular carrier charges for using mobile data. Depending on the plan you have you buy a certain amount of data, and when you use it up you pay for more. I can't be more specific, because there are several hundred cellular carriers that support the iPhone, and each of them has different plans. So the best thing for you to do is to call your carrier and ask, or log in to your carrier's web site and review your account.

  • Does turning off your MacBook by holding the power button hurt your MacBook

Almost whenever I exit out of War Craft 3: The Frozen Throne my Mac Book freezes up, as a result I frequently turn off my Mac Book by holding down the power button- Does this hurt my Mac Book?

There is most definitely a chance that you can cause stability problems (although, it is somewhat less likely that you would cause any harm to the hardware). The likelihood of you causing problems increases directly with how often you shut down this way. You should be seeking a solution to the issue you are having with WC3. As Johathan mentioned, OS X does quite a bit in it's shutdown process. Bypassing that can cause anything from basic data corruption, to stability issues, to a non-bootable system depending on what the machine is in the middle of doing when you force it to shut down. In general, worst case scenario is that you would need to re-install OS X to fix things up. It's really not worth taking a chance on your systems stability for the sake of a game. I would say that you really should try to track down a solution to the problem you are having with the game.

  • If you use imessage while on WiFi does it still use your data plan or does it only use the data plan if you're on 3G?

I just got the new iPhone4s (my first time off of a flip phone!) with the imessaging but I'm not sure if that is going to use up my data plan if I use it instead of texts.  If I'm at home on my wifi will that still take away from my data plan if I use imessage? I know that FaceTime works off of wifi as opposed to the data plan but wasn't sure if it was the same for imessage.  I'm on the Verizon data plan if that matters.
    Thanks!

This weekend, the AT&T tower near our home failed.  We had no AT&T cell service whatsoever.  During this time, our home WiFi was always running at 100%.  No iMessage would go through, nor could any iMessage be received.  Both my and my wife's iPhone 4S were connected to the home WiFi and were used with it.  Two things did not work: cell service and iMessage.
I think that iMessage seems to rely on the phone data plan, or at least the cell service must be in range to use it.

  • Does Time Machine Backup Use Internet Data?

Quite simply, If I have a external hard drive plugged into an airport extreme and am connecting to it wirelessley, do back ups use up my internet data?

No.  It is a local subnet connection between your Mac and the Airport Extreme.  You Mac finds the Airport Extreme using the Bonjour protocol that will not cross a subnet boundary, so the only way your Mac can find the Airport Extreme attached storage is if it is in the same subnet as your Mac.
The exception is if you are using Back-to-My-Mac to tunnel Bonjour across the internet to a remote Airport Extreme/TimeCapsule.  But you would know if you were doing that.
Or if you were using a VPN package to make 2 subnets separated by the internet look like the same subnet.  Again you would know if you had setup a VPN between subnets across the internet.

What exact 'radio widget' are you speaking of?
I know my Thunderbolt has an FM app. When you plug in earbuds, you can use the app to listen to stations nearby that the antenna can pickup.
If any other app, Pandora, Tune-In, IHeartRadio, etc all use data.

  • This isn't a question but rather a warning to anyone using the new OS for iphone 4.  The imessage uses up your data plan like crazy.  I called Apple about it and they said no it's not doing it.  I called AT

The new OS is burning through my data plan like crazy and here's why.  Imessage uses your data plan and not your texting plan.  So every time you send a text message to someone with an iphone it uses imessage and it uses your data, not your text plan.  I couldn't figure out why I was burning through so much of my data plan so quickly.  I called Apple and they said, no it's not the data plan doing it.  I called AT&T and they said, yes, the imessage uses data instead of your texting plan if you are texting to another iphone.  Also, the new OS runs your apps all the time, even when you aren't using them.  So if you are not near wifi your apps are running and burning your data plan.  The AT&T guy took me through the steps to turn off the apps.  You can still use them but they won't be running constantly.  Seriously Apple, you should let people know this.  It does say it in the fine print on the website "data rates may apply" under imessage but most people will never read this.  So my data plan started on October 10th and it's already at 175 megabytes and I only have a 200 megabyte plan.  I've never used more than 50 to 75 megabytes in a month.  Apple get it together and be honest with people and tell them.  Quit denying the problem.  Most people have probably not even discovered this yet.  Wait till you get your bill.

It's not really common knowledge because I've talked to several people today and none of them knew about it.  Also, when I called Apple they said no the new OS is not using data.  Totally wrong answer.  You'd think they'd know about it and at least tell people.  The people who are going to be hit by this are people like me with the 200mb plans.  I just think it's best to spread the word so people can know what's happening.  I still don't know how I went through so much data in such a short period of time.  It's not happening anymore though, not since I fixed everything up last night.
If you are using a free wifi connection, there are no data charges with iMessage.  But in an area where you did NOT have a wifi connection, of course it used 3G and of course you got charged for it (or had it count against your plan limits).
I'll ask again - without a wifi connection, just what did you think was happening?  How did you think your iPhone was able to magically send a message WITHOUT using any data connection?  A little bit of rational thought would have made you realize that there was no way, over a 3G connection (which is a service provided by your cellular service provider, NOT Apple), that you can send or receive ANYTHING without your service provider's plan picking it up.
Nothing abut iMessage has ever hinted that it can, in any way, bypass your service provider when NOT using a wifi connection.

  • HT201299 Apps in Green in 'use cellular data for..' cannot be turned off?

Why does an app in 'use cellular data for..' keeps on going to Green eventhough I already swiped it off? It keeps coming back.

First thing and easiest thing to try is a device reset:
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • Is it possible to just listening to music without using up data time off a plan?

I`m not quite sure on how to disable the phone setting id I am on wi-fi so that my data plan is not needlessly used up. I already have wireless in my home.
Also, if I just want to listen to music, there has to be a way the the phone/data usage does not tally up?
    Iphone4s= yes....it is my first cell...OK OK

Sure thing. You can turn off your data under settings. And if you're just listening to your music app than it won't use data. If you're using an app like Pandora, than it would be using data. But your iPhone is smart enough to turn off data, only when there is a known wi-fi connection around. In the top left, it should show three waves for wi-fi, and a 3g when you're using 3g data.
    Grats on your 4S purchase!

  • Want to use NO data, but Wifi?

Hi, new owner of the Curve 9300/3G, running OS 6.
I am currently on a voice/text plan, but have Data available (although I will get charged ridiculously on it).
So I want to use NO data, by all means. But I want to use Wifi when I'm at home.
I've read online that Wifi won't work if Data Services are off. Okay, so if I turn Data services ON, I can successfully use Wifi (facebook, email, youtube, etc.). Good. But now, when I take my phone outside, is it going to update my facebook, youtube, email, other apps, etc. by Data/3G? --> This is what I don't want, and what I am afraid of. This is why I haven't even begun using Wifi yet, because of the fear of the Data kicking in to update my apps while I am not on Wifi.
So, is there any way to keep data/3G off for good, and have no data charges? Is the only solution to not use wifi at all, and strictly use the phone for calling/texting?
    Thanks!!

    OnlySkillz wrote:
Ok so I think I found the solution..tell me if this is correct:
When I want to use WIFI, I just enable Data services, and use my WIFI.
When I'm outside without WIFI, I just have to set Data services to OFF before I leave, so that it doesn't update any apps for me while I'm on the go.
    Is this correct? Thanks.
Yes this is correct, you'll have to turn off your data services before leaving the house or your facebook, email, msn ect will still update.
