Does turning off your MacBook by holding the power button hurt your MacBook
Almost whenever I exit out of War Craft 3: The Frozen Throne my Mac Book freezes up, as a result I frequently turn off my Mac Book by holding down the power button- Does this hurt my Mac Book?
There is most definitely a chance that you can cause stability problems (although, it is somewhat less likely that you would cause any harm to the hardware). The likelihood of you causing problems increases directly with how often you shut down this way. You should be seeking a solution to the issue you are having with WC3. As Johathan mentioned, OS X does quite a bit in it's shutdown process. Bypassing that can cause anything from basic data corruption, to stability issues, to a non-bootable system depending on what the machine is in the middle of doing when you force it to shut down. In general, worst case scenario is that you would need to re-install OS X to fix things up. It's really not worth taking a chance on your systems stability for the sake of a game. I would say that you really should try to track down a solution to the problem you are having with the game.

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
Thanks!cterra wrote:

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button -
My IPhone 4 won't turn on , I have tried holding the power button , the home button for 20 secs and it won't work , tried putting it into DFU mode and nothings happened , last night I updated it to 6.0.1 since then it hasn' t turned on , what should I do?
I suggest charging it for several hours, then trying again.

It have tried pulling cord out if the computer and then plugging it back ...it still won't turn on. Pls help...next step
Try using the resetting SMC procedure
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
You may have done something similar already, but do it precisely as described. You should disconnect ALL peripheral devices, except for Apple keyboard and mouse.
Also, when you plug it back in, if the iMac is currently plugged into an old (or overcrowded) power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to a wall outlet by itself. -
Restart your computer by holding the power......
This morning i was fooling around with a /usr/local file, i accidently deleted it and the computer stopped responding, so i held the power button for a few seconds and the computer turned off. Upon pressing it again, the apple logo appeared, followed by a black screen with a black box inside it saying restart your computer by holding the power button for a few seconds... so i did that, and restarted the computer.. Nothing, the same box appeared again, Kept trying and trying..
Please help me identify the problem and solution. ThanksJust recently I tried to upgrade my vuze and install limewire and upon installation I suddenly get a gray tint come down over the screen and a multi language message that says 'you need ot restart your computer. hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button'. the only way out of this screen is to, as it tells me hold down the power button and stress out my computer. can someone help? I have read up on a similar problem that happens to people at start up but this is particular to these two programs only for me so far...

My macbook pro won't sleep - if I select sleep it does so initially, then the disc-drive appears to kick in and it comes back to life. It also won't turn off (again, the disc-drive kicks in) unless you hold the power-button down for a long period. Help?

Macbook stuck on blue screen and cant turn it off even by holding the power button.
Bought a refurbished macbook and it arrived today. was enjoying it for a while then i decided to reboot to get the new OS. I came back to it a minute later and there was a blue screen with the loader on it. Its been in this state for hours now and i cant reboot by holding the power button so i have no idea how to actually do anything. At the moment im leaving it running in its current state hoping it will all be sorted once the battery has run out. ANY help appreciated as i cant find anything whatsoever in forums that has any relation to my problem!!!
More details bud... WHAT MBP version do you have? What movie player are you using....? Is it a AVI MP4 MKV? IS it a DVD???

I pod touch 5th generation was working fine (Not sure what the last ios i downloaded was it should be ios 8 or higher). The battery died so i charged it. Now that it is charged when i hold the power button the screen turns dark blue as if it's powering on and the apple logo is about to appear but it never does nor do any other type of images on the screen. If i hold the home button Siri will say "Siri is not available please connect to internet" but there is still no image on the screen. I've tried holding down the home and power button it restart it but doing this just gave me the same results. How do i fix this problem? What's wrong with my i pod?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

macbook pro 2010 only will turn on if i hold the power button down for atleast 7 seconds.....before i could just press it and it would come right on
I tried those already, did not work.
I did how ever remove the command key and wiped it down and it turns on perfectly!
but now the keyboard keys seem to be out of place or something. For example it makes a "ping" sound when i hit some of them, when i hit function or control it puts the letter Z.
Any input would be great! -
I have no external devices connected to my Mac mini but still everytime I use it after about half hour to an hour in whatever I'm using wether it's the Internet or iPhoto or iTunes the beach ball appears and I cannot get it to stop I always have to press and hold the power button and force it to switch off I then do a safe reboot and it starts up again fine but same thing again after a certain amount of time it will freeze. I have also had on some occasions a bright white screen with a folder and a flashing question mark appear but it's not because of any external devices as they have all been removed please can someone help me as I have no idea why this keeps happening to my computer and I'm worried that there's something seriously wrong it's only about 6 months old and I have no experience in dealing with computers ??

Hello.
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch (mid-2010):
Processor: 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
Running Mac OS X 10.7.2
Yesterday I opened my computer (was sleeping as usual) and the screen just flasehed white and the computer powered off. The magnetic electricity thingy was connected and was green, so it was fully charged, and connected to the electricity.
Since it powered off, I tried turning it on again, and again, one second after starting to boot up, screen flashed white and the computer powered off.
I read somewhere I should hold down the power button longer, so I did, and it booted up. That's why I am able to write this. But every time I turn it off or put it to sleep, it does the same thing when I boot up.
If I don't hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, the computer won't work.
Then today, I did a backup of my entie hard drive, just in case. Later, I started using Excel, and about 1 hour after I was on it, suddenly it got really slow. Like I would click on a program like Safari, and it would take over 30-45 secs to start and be ready. And my computer is usually really fast!
I went on the Internet again, started in safe mode, boot up with option+command+P+R to reset PRAM, and nothing worked. Then suddenly on one turn-off/turn-on (since I can't restart because the computer only starts if I hold the power button for 10 seconds), again it is working at normal speed.
What can this be? Any ideas?
I really appreciate your time and help in advance

I forgot to say I had already tried that as well. Just in case, I just tried it again and there was no change :S
Are you running the Apple-supplied RAM? Have you run Apple Hardware Test? I don't know what else you've tried, but this may be time to do a fresh install of Lion if you have not done so since installing Lion.
